Why is she driving him crazy? It's because my Patron's friend is convinced that there is ONLY ONE true religion, one way or path, and she thinks anyone who doesn't follow it -- that is, anyone who doesn't go "full Yazoo" -- is on AC/DC's Highway to Hell.

Is there ONLY ONE TRUE WAY? My Patron wants to know. Yes, is my answer. There IS just one true way.

Unfortunately, it's different for absolutely everyone! Let's touch on a lot of the basics that make Zen [and other forms of Buddhism] different from "religions."

For one thing, in Zen there is nothing to "believe" in [except maybe Taoism]. There is a practice, and there are principles, and the practitioner puts those principles into practice. That's kind of it.

What is Catholicism? It's Universalism

The main practice is zazen ("sitting meditation"), often defined as shikantaza ("just sitting"). Through this practice, attention is cultivated. But even this is saying too much.

Speaking of not speaking, we could say that Zen is the practice of not filling silences. To wit, there is the Great Silence from which we all come and to which we all go. Religion kinda sorta sometimes puts a great big Jesus statue right in the center of that silence, or a great big Buddha statue right there in the middle of serene silence.

It tries to fill the void, the peace of silence, as if it could improve on it, gilding the lily, giving the snake legs, papering over the gaps and blanks, pretending that we can fill the not-knowing with some kind of knowing.

Jesus had a foreskin?

One can't reason with blind faith, so what talking?

But in the end, the job of a spiritual practice is not to remove uncertainty. Rather, in my experience at least, a practice humbles us before that uncertainty. There's a big difference. Every time I think I finally found the One True Way, something changes -- me, the world around me, the situation, life -- and I have to change along with it, grow, go with the flow, and keep going, keep living, keep not knowing. No fake certainty!

First tattooed man in America was Irish

James F. O’Connell, the “Tattooed Man,” arrived in New York City in 1835, causing much consternation. If a lady so much as glanced at him, her future children would be born just as hideously inked as he was — covered in thick, patterned black bands that curved down and around their hands, arms, legs, and backs. Or so the churchmen told their flocks.

O’Connell, an Irish sailor, acquired his full-body tattoo during a stint as a castaway in the South Pacific’s Caroline Islands during the late 1820s and early 1830s.

After their ship sunk, Irishman O’Connell and his shipmate, George Keenan, were taken in by inhabitants of the island of Pohnpei — who were not cannibals, O’Connell emphatically states in his memoir.

Within a few days, the two were bustled off to an isolated hut, where five or six women, “savage printers” armed with ink and thorns, set about providing the newcomers with the markings that would smooth their way into the community.

The resulting tattoo, called pelipel, made O’Connell “fully human” in the world of the South Pacific, writes Juniper Ellis in her book Tattooing the World (Columbia University Press, 2008), for which the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) provided research support. More: neh.gov

There's something about the Irish, going from a tiny island under the thumb of a neighboring island, pushed out into the world as a diaspora that saw the sidhe, Tuatha de Danan, the wee people, the spirits, and creatures of the Emerald Isle spread out into all corners of the world and the public imagination. The neighboring island forced itself on everyone, like the last militant vestige of the Roman Empire (the remaining force in Rome slipping on a sheep's disguise in an exhibition of soft power that conquered the planet or plane more deeply than British weapons and forces.

How did the Irish win their way into the hearts of all, particularly with so many redheads? One of the most prominent and important of the Irish was named O'Connell (Laurence), who became the first Westerner to ordain as a Theravada Buddhist monk, Ven. U Dhammaloka (pronounced \ooh-dah-mah-low-kuh\), the "U" being an Burmese honorific.

He traveled by boat to California then by ship to Asia, where he made a name for himself as a freethinker and Buddhist, opposing Christian missionaries, ended up all the way in Mandalay, Burma, in a Buddhist monastery.

Another O'Connell (James F.), not JFO, also made a splash in the Pacific among the people of Pohnpei among the Caroline Islands. He was a sailor on a boat that wrecked, landing him in Micronesia and this adventure.

The acronym WWJD can mean many things. In Berkeley, it stands for, "What would Jello do?" Jello is Jello Biafra, the brilliant if slightly preachy former lead singer of the patriotic punk rock band the Dead Kennedys and founder of Alternative Tentacles Records.

(It is more patriotic to critique and try to improve one's country than to mindlessly go along with anything it says or does in the name of capitalism, assassinating presidents, hegemony, imperialism, racism, sexism, war-profiteering, and other misdeeds).

If we call to mind our best example of a human person or spiritual being, then that can help guide our own decision-making when it comes to sorting out tough dilemmas or forks in the road of life.

Some think Jesus is best, so to be able to stay on his team, they imagine he would be very "woke." Other followers hate this idea. As with most things, Christians are divided. It's like that scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. The Messiah figure runs because so many followers need something from Him.

He takes off so quickly that he drops a sandal and his water gourd. Followers pick up these items, reasoning that the sacred object must have been left behind by the Savior as a guide symbolic of his presence.

Is the gourd the water of life, or is the sandal expressive of the path we must follow? Gourd, sandal? Sandal, gourd? And then they begin killing each other for the crime of worshiping the wrong symbol.

Study shows threefold rise in bisexual behavior among Americans

A study published in The Journal of Sex Research

 uncovered a significant rise in the number of Americans identifying as bisexual or reporting bisexual behaviors, especially in recent years.

I'm not lesbian. I'm but call myself abrosexual.

The findings shed light on the evolving landscape of sexual orientation in the United States.

While acceptance of same-sex sex sexuality and marriage has notably increased, bisexuality has remained somewhat in the shadows, with less clarity around its trends and behaviors.

This gap prompted researchers to delve into nationally representative samples to map out the landscape of bisexuality.

For their study, the researchers utilized the wealth of data provided by the General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS, a cornerstone of social science research, has been gathering data on the attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics of the American public since 1972.

The research team analyzed responses from a substantial sample of 32,238 respondents who completed the GSS between 1989 and 2018, along with an additional 2,313 respondents from the 2021 wave.

The End of Gender will mean the end of gay?

This approach allowed them to maintain a focus on a nationally representative sample, ensuring that their findings could speak to broader societal trends.

The study employed four measures based on sexual behavior and one measure based on identity.

Starting in 1989, the GSS included questions about the number of male and female partners respondents had since turning 18, which the researchers used to categorize respondents into groups based on the sex of their sexual partners.

Additionally, from 2008 onwards, the GSS began asking respondents to identify their sexual orientation, offering options like “gay, lesbian, or homosexual,” “bisexual,” and “heterosexual or straight.”

These indicators allowed the researchers to track changes in how people report their sexual orientation and behaviors over time.

The researchers found that the proportion of respondents reporting partners of both sexes since age 18 experienced a notable increase over time.

Specifically, the study documents a threefold rise in such reports, moving from 3.1% in the 1989–1994 waves to 9.3% in the 2012–2018 waves.

This trend was further corroborated by the increase in respondents identifying as bisexual, which more than doubled from the 2008–2010 waves to the 2012–2018 waves.

Interestingly, the proportion of individuals identifying as bisexual surpassed those identifying as gay or lesbian in the more recent cohorts, underscoring the growing visibility and acknowledgment of bisexuality as a legitimate sexual orientation.

The research also highlighted the complexity of bisexual identity and behavior. For instance, while there was an increase in the number of individuals identifying as bisexual, this did not always align with the patterns of sexual behavior reported.

Some individuals who had sexual partners of both sexes did not necessarily identify as bisexual [though we would objectively categorize them as such regardless of their subjective claims], which points to the nuanced ways in which sexual orientation is experienced and understood.

“There are several likely explanations for this,” the researchers wrote. “First, sexual behavior can be exploratory, taking place before a person has clarified their own sexual orientation identity, a process that continues throughout young adulthood. Our measure likely captures gay and lesbian persons who had partners of a different sex before they came out or clarified their sexual orientations, which can occur later in life.”

“Second, sexual orientation can be fluid [like when you're just act out gay impulses on weekends or when drinking or intoxicated?], with some people changing their sexual behavior and/or their sexual orientation identities over time. In both of these cases, using the sex of sexual partners since age 18 measure means that we may be capturing sexual experiences that have taken place many years ago, especially for older respondents.

“Finally, even persons who have more recently had partners of both sexes may not consider themselves bisexual [because of the embarrassment that would cause to be lumped into the LGBTQIA+ cohort, where Q does not mean "queer" but "questioning" or even "quasi" by society], and the term may not fit their understandings of themselves and their sexual behavior [or at least not that they would want to admit it].”

The study also shed light on demographic variations in the reporting of sexual orientation and behavior.

Younger individuals and women were more likely than their older and male counterparts to report partners of both sexes and to identify as bisexual.

This finding is indicative of the generational shift in attitudes towards sexuality, where younger cohorts exhibit greater openness and fluidity in their sexual orientation and behaviors.

There were no significant differences in the reporting of bisexuality among different racial and ethnic groups, suggesting that the increase in bisexuality may be a widespread phenomenon across diverse communities in the United States.

“The proportion of persons identifying as bisexual and the proportion of persons who report engaging in sex with partners of both sexes in the U.S. have increased markedly since 1989,” the researchers concluded.

Ryan Seacrest doesn't like labels.

“Future research on sexual orientation can better recognize that the terms with which we identify ourselves are social and that there is some degree of choice about how to identify our sexual orientation, particularly among individuals with histories of both male and female partners.

The study, “The Rise of Bisexuality: U.S. Representative Data Show an Increase Over Time in Bisexual Identity and Persons Reporting Sex with Both Women and Men,” was authored by Martin A. Monto and Sophia Neuweiler.
