Vesak moon 2021 is super and eclipsed! |
The maximal eclipse is at 4:19 am TONIGHT (technically Wednesday in the wee hours of 5/26/21). It starts at 1:47 am and continues four about four hours. But fans around the world have crashed the Griffith Park Observatory in mountain lion territory over Hollywood, California in the megalopolis of Los Angeles. In fact, the best place to see it tonight is in Hawaii, which has the tallest mountain in the world (with most of that height under the Pacific Ocean so that the mountain, called Mauna Kea, is the tallest but not the highest, an honor that K2 probably deserves though Nepal/Tibet's Sagarmāthā, aka "Mt. Everest," gets all the credit).

It's a super Super Moon for Buddhists
This is spectacular -- because it marks the night 26 centuries ago that the wandering ascetic Siddhartha Gautama sat unmoving under a bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) and awakened.
He was born, awoke, and passed this night. |
It was proto-India, in Enlightenment Grove (present-day Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India), where he experienced a "great awakening" or maha bodhi that made him the "Enlightened One," which is the meaning of the Buddha, and famous to billions and billions of beings.
So Wednesday will be celebrated as a kind of "Buddhist Christmas" all over the world. It is regarded as a thrice-blessed day of Vesak because it was under the same moon in the ancient month of Vesakha that Siddhartha was born, awakened to the utmost, and passed into final nirvana.
The day is celebrated by visiting a temple or monastic complex (vihara) to practice the Eight Precepts, listen to the Dharma, and meditate.
Why would anyone celebrate the Buddha's passing away? No one would except that an enlightened being (and most of them are not supreme buddhas) do not die. They touch the unconditioned element, the deathless, nirvana. Death implies rebirth. When there is no more rebirth, that is peace, that is the end of all suffering, that is the incomprehensible nirvana and nirodha.
