SoCal ratings numbers: LA radio stations

"The Morning Mess" ratings losers got fired as KNOU switched format to KNX News Radio.

KOST (103.5 FM) completely dominated the Nielsen Radio Rating, or so-called Holiday Rating period, in Los Angeles in December.

The holiday rating KOST was 13.9, almost three times the rating of the second-placed KRTH (101.1 FM), which gained a 5.0 share. This is an even larger spread than in the previous period and may have a high KOST rating.

The holidays were also good for KFI (640 AM), finishing third with 4.7, followed by KTWV The Wave (94.7 FM) with 3.9 and KBIG (104.3 FM) with 3.8. Adding a stream of KTWV that gained 0.1 share on its own, The Wave's total was 4.0.

The holiday period was not very kind to KLOS (95.5 FM). It only intensified on holidays the decline that started in the previous period for some reason. This probably means it bounces, but we’ll see. There has been a drop in full points since the summer.

KROQ (106.7 FM) rose a little. This was good news for the station, which hit a low of 1.5 in October. Competitor KYSR (Alt 98.7) was 2.7 in November, so it has been flat for a month and the two alternative rock stations are again in close proximity to each other. But this is important. Both stations reflect the problems that the alternative rock format has in attracting a large audience across the country. Both stations are less popular than in the past.

And what happened to Power 106? The rating of stations that once knocked out KIIS-FM from the top in the 1980s dropped to 1.5. This is even lower than it was a few years ago when it fell into the Top 40 when it was known as K-WEST. The station played adult contemporary music as Magic 106. Can you expect the revival of K-West? Is Chuck Martin willing to program it again? You can expect … Power’s direct competition KRRL (Real 92.3) was 2.1.

Stevie Wonder’s KJLH (102.3 FM) — which is still approved by the City of Compton — maintains a tremendous increase that began in November 1.6. Just a month ago it was 1.2. It is stable at 1.6 in three evaluation periods. Go Country 105, which dropped the country during the holidays to play holiday music, dropped 1.5 points vs. half of 2.0 points from the “December” period. In November, Go Country was 2.4.

KABC (790 AM) was a tough month with a year-to-year high of 1.4, down 0.3 from December and 0.7 from November to 0.8. AM Classic — KMZT (1260 AM) was lower than its previous incarnation as LA Oldies, but never got off the map with a full 0.1 share. It may not sound impressive, but the station started from scratch. And it’s the first time the station has won a reputation for playing classical music in AM for decades.

In total, iHeart has a total of 31.5 shares of station group viewers. Entercom earned a total of 19.1. Let that sink in for a moment. One company controls almost one-third of listening in town, and two companies together control more than 50%. Can the FCC dismantle this essential monopoly before dragging all stations in town into the income toilets? In my dream…

Each rating is an estimate of the average percentage of listeners over the age of 6 listening to the station between 6:00 am and midnight. Source
