As Buddhism does not require any formal "conversion," American Buddhists can easily incorporate Dharma practice into their normal routines and traditions. The result is that American Buddhists come from every ethnicity, nationality, and religious tradition.

The Beat Poets were early American Buddhists
In 2012, The San Diego Union-Tribune estimated there were 1.2 million U.S. practitioners, of whom 40% are living in Southern California.

In terms of percentage, with its large Asian and particularly Japanese American community, Hawaii has the most Buddhists at 8% of the population.

The term "American Buddhism" can be used to describe all Buddhist groups within the United States, including Asian American Buddhists born into the tradition, who comprise the largest percentage of Buddhists in the country.
