Scientists discover Maya city-state in jungle

Lindsey Charleston (MSN 2/23); Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Xochitl (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Mexico scores another archeological wonder with discovery of Maya site 650 sq. miles across.
Nearby, in what is now Guatemala, are pyramids Buddhist missionaries would've visited.

Archeologists discover an ancient Mayan city [and state] in the [jungle] that’s been hidden for [way more than] 2,000 years
Where in Mexico were the Maya?
Archaeologists uncovered the remains of an ancient Mayan settlement spanning 650 square miles across the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin region, near the Mexico border [as it meets Guatemala, a famous place where the earliest Buddhist missionaries made a great impression].

History of Buddhism in America
[Guatemala borders Mexico and takes its name from the historical Buddha Gautama, according to American researcher Rick Fields (How the Swans Came to the Lake: A Narrative History of Buddhism in America3rd rev. and updated edition). The Maya may take their name from the Buddha's biological mother, Queen Maya, whose last name was Gautama, sister of the world's first Buddhist nun, Maha Pajapati Gotami, the Buddha's adoptive mother.]

[See also the mindboggling work of American Edward P. Vining, who in 1895 proved how Buddhist missionaries from Afghanistan and China arrived in the Americas centuries before Christopher Columbus touched the Caribbean:

Buddhist Monks Discovered America
The site, which is believed to have once consisted of nearly 1,000 settlements connected by 100 miles of causeways, includes the remnants of platforms, pyramids, reservoirs, and canals.

This remarkable discovery allows us to explore and appreciate the wonders of a long-lost Mayan city. More

Unveiling a hidden city: LiDAR technology discovers lost remains
Mesoamerica is separated from Central America
Scientists have discovered the remains of a lost city using a form of laser technology known as LiDAR, or "Light Detection and Ranging."

This remote sensing method sends pulses of laser light from an airplane, which reflects back to form an image of the landscape beneath.

The Maya of Mexico were in "Mesoamerica."
By using this technology, the scientists have managed to cut through the foliage and cloud formations to gain a clear view of the site, uncovering the previously hidden city. This remarkable discovery has been made possible with the aid of LiDAR technology. More

"The Long Discourses of the Buddha" (book)

Maurice Walshe, Dīgha Nikāya translation; Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
The Long Discourses of the Buddha is a complete Dīgha Nikaya translation.

These are the lengthy discourses of the Buddha, one of the big collections of texts in the Pali language canon, the authorized scriptures of Theravada Buddhism.

This collection -- among the oldest records of the historical Buddha’s original teachings, given in India 2,600 years ago -- consists of 34 longer-length suttas or sutras, “discourses,” distinguished as such from the middle-length and shorter sutras of the other canonical collections.

These sutras reveal the gentleness, compassion, power, and penetrating wisdom of the Buddha. Included are teachings on:
  • mindfulness (Mahā-Satipaį¹į¹hāna Sutra);
  • cultivating virtue, serene concentration (mental coherence), wisdom (Subha Sutra);
  • Dependent Origination (Mahānidrāna Sutra);
  • the roots and causes of wrong views (Brahmajāla Sutra);
  • and a long description of the Buddha’s last days and final passing into nirvana (Mahāparinibbāna Sutra);
  • along with a wealth of practical advice and insight for all those traveling along the spiritual path.
Ven. Sumedho Thera writes in his foreword: “[These sutras] are NOT meant to be ‘sacred scriptures’ that tell us what to believe. One should read them, listen to them, think about them, contemplate them, and investigate the present reality, the present experience, with them. Then, and only then, can one insightfully know the truth beyond words.”

Introduced with a vivid account of the Buddha’s life and times and a short survey of his teachings, The Long Discourses of the Buddha brings us closer in every way to the wise and compassionate presence of Shakyamuni (the “Sage of the Shakyas”), Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha and his path of truth.

Why is the Buddha big, fat, and happy?

Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly
It is thought that the future Buddha Maitreya will come as a Central Asian (Scythian) king.
Just as not all swastikas are the same, neither are all "Buddhas." Here the true historical Buddha Gautama or Shakyamuni (left) is contrasted with the popular Mahayana Fat Happy Bodhisattva Budai or Hotei (blavatskytheosophy.com).
.
Fat Budai is not "the Buddha."
The Buddha is NOT fat, big and happy perhaps, but not fat. The fat guy is Budai, also known as Hotei.

He's a bodhisattva, a being aspiring for buddhahood and Maitreya/Messiah status as a kind of Mahayana martyr figure who will save all living beings when he's on the verge of enlightenment but will not enter enlightenment as a buddha but rather as a supremely enlightened (samma-sam-buddha arhat who then establishes the Dharma (teaching that leads to liberation) and waits for all living beings to gain insight and cross over this flood of suffering known as samsara, the "Wheel of Life and Death."

The historical Buddha Shakyamuni
It will be a long wait, of course, but Mahayana Buddhists comfort themselves with selfless vows and slogans like "samsara is nirvana." It's a lot like Catholicism, if one thinks about it. Indeed, there are many, many similarities between the later Mahayana ("Great Vehicle") school that departed and extrapolated or interpreted the historical Buddha's teaching to create a more Brahminical/Hindu version for the masses of followers who prefer faith to compassion to wisdom and compassion.

The "Virg Yin" Kwan Yin Bodhisattva
Like Catholicism, Mahayana Buddhism is far more concerned with the Virg Yin (Kwan Yin) than the central teaching figure. When the teacher is mentioned, it is usually not the historical Buddha who is meant but a more cosmic God-like being known as Amitabha. Everyone goes around greeting each other saying Amitofu, as in "all hail the great leader" or "God bless you."

The Western God, all-powerful white man
Great ceremonies and fanfare promote faith, emotions, piety, and devotion rather than meditation, dispassion, mindfulness, or insight. That kind of stuff is left to the monastics, who do not usually practice much either given that they have become priests and priestesses, officiants at social functions such as funerals and "blessing" ceremonies, so many blessin ceremonies. Like Brahmins of the Buddha's time and later Hindu priests, they are the officials who know the secret mantras (prayer-like magic formulae), the way to "God" and "GOD" (Brahma and Brahman), the ones who as God's representatives on Earth can forgive, modify, or even expunge karma for the rich (with a little "indulgence" selling in the old European style).

Veneration of good luck Budai is widespread
Populist Mahayana Buddhism in China is so in line with Roman Catholicism that the official communist government asked the Vatican and Catholic Church to come in and proselytize to have social control the former Confucian-Taoist-Buddhist triumvirate used to exert for social control. Most Mahayana Buddhists do not realize any of this, so it may come as a shock to research and find it out. Religion is a very deeply seated thing most of us are born into, never question, and get no answers for even if we do question.

Future Buddha Maitreya
So we must all respect the fact that 90% of Buddhists follow this school and its Tibetan branch, which is different enough in appearance to call itself Vajrayana while still very much considering itself a form of Mahayana (just ask the 14th Dalai Lama, enemy of the Chinese government, savior of the Tibetan people and quite a few Westerners). For the love of Kwan Yin and Mother Mary, we can all be Catholic and join in the Universalism religion most humans are forced to follow at this time (which is the form followed on another neighboring planet, it is said, where the population has given up freedom for social cohesion, which seems to be the Chinese way, though not at all the American way).

The Buddha is still the Buddha, who spoke of 28 or so buddhas who had preceded him over the aeons, when the world was not so much different than it is now, save for the fact that in the past the devas (angels, gods, space aliens) were visible and no one doubted whether they existed or what they were capable of doing as superhumans who could shapeshift and appear as average humans.

So who's the FAT one?
Budai or Pu-Tai (Chinese and Japanese åøƒč¢‹, BùdĆ i, Hotei, Vietnamese Bố ĐẔi) is a Chinese folkloric deity whose name means "Cloth Sack." The name comes from the Santa Claus like bag he is conventionally depicted as carrying.

Budai is usually identified with or seen as a pre-incarnation of Maitreya, the "messiah," the Future Buddha, so much so that the Budai image is one of the main forms in which Maitreya is depicted in Mahayana Buddhist China.

The "messiah" Maitreya
He is almost always shown as fat, jolly, and smiling or laughing. Hence his nickname in Chinese, the Laughing Buddha (Chinese 笑佛, pinyin XiĆ o Fó). It is no wonder that in the West, potheads (like Cypress Hill) frequently mistake the image of Budai for the historical Gautama Buddha (Shakyamuni, the "Sage of the Shakya/Scythian Clan). Sitting cross legged he is usually called the Fat Buddha (Chinese čƒ–ä½›, pinyin PĆ ng Fó). More

The Hidden History of the Buddha

WARNING: Historical evidence and theories presented here are controversial and do not serve the vested interests of Nepal, India, or Iran. Truth eventually prevails.

Photo of the Buddha, Sage of the Sakyas, whose appears far more Aryan (i.e., Iranian) than east Indian. He was from a "neighboring land," referred to himself as descended from the "Solar race" with blue eyes and "golden" skin (Wisdom Quarterly).

Zarathustra and Gautama in a Non-Jonesian Framework
Pre-edited text by [renegade historian] Dr. Ranajit Pal

The blunder of Palibothra by Sir William Jones [the Jones in Jonesian] and the forgery of Lumbini by Dr. A. Fuhrer[1] have not only wrecked Indology but also [distorted] world history... Jones’ false theory has inundated even the history of Jesus Christ [St. Issa], whose link with Seistan remains unnoticed.

Another casualty was Zoroaster [Zarathustra]... W. B. Henning writes: "…there is scarcely a point on which there is unanimity; Zoroaster’s time and place, the religion he inherited from his forefathers, the message he brought, his aim, his community, the development of his church, the history of the Avesta -- each scholar will dissent from his fellows on one point or another."[2]

Long before Henning, the great Orientalist M. Rostovtzeff of Yale, wrote in 1922, “We know but little of the history and archaeology of Central Asia and of the Iranian world.”[3]

The actual shape of the Indian empire is unknown. It was in constant flux with influence as far west as the Near East and as far east as the South China Sea (WQ).

And even after 80 years, this remains essentially true with regard to history, if not archaeology.

R. N. Frye candidly admits failure[4]: "Zarathustra, or Zoroaster as the Greeks called him, presents many problems, and it is discouraging that after so many years of research we do not know when or where he lived or even precisely his teachings."

However, the learned Harvard scholar is unaware that a British forgery lies at the root of the malady. Sanity cannot be brought back to Iranian history without noting that India and Iran were once interlinked geographically. A similar reform is needed in Indology[5].

The Buddha was fair ("golden") in contrast to many of his followers in Magadha (WQ).

D. Chakrabarti of Cambridge has written about some failings of colonial Indology[6]. But he is unaware that the most damaging legacy from the colonial era, which affects the histories of both India and Iran, is Sir William Jones’ false identification of Palibothra.

A study of the Iranian and Indian texts including the Buddhist Jataka Tales in a non-Jonesian framework merges the histories of Zoroaster and Gotama [Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha] and points at the existence of an ancient holy land in Seistan.

Ancient "India" (Bharat in the Mahabharata) was a vast, loosely aligned amalgamation of clans, kingdoms, and territories linked by trade and cultural exchanges (WQ).

An India within Iran
Vedic scholars like Hillerbrandt and Brunnhofer realized that in regard to the ancient era, the term Indo-Iranian is often preferable to "Indian" or "Iranian." But a similar awareness is lacking vis-Ć -vis the Avesta [Zoroastrian scriptures, avesta.org].

Iranian researchers have justly rejoiced over the stunning archaeological finds at Jiroft[7]. But they seem to be unaware that Alexander the Great had found Indians in this area and defeated them.

The common heritage of the Indians and Iranians goes back to their nomadic past[8]. Yet it is important to note that even in the 4th century BC, during Alexander's expedition southeast, Iran was called India.

This India within Iran was known to Herodotus, who wrote that there were Indians in the Gedrosia area. Eminent scholars like Arnold Toynbee and Sir Charles Eliot were also aware of the geographical overlap.

Eliot wrote[9], "Our geographical and political phraseology about India and Persia obscures the fact that in many periods the frontier between the two countries was uncertain or not drawn as now."

Toynbee was a historian of the world and noted the shifting nature of India’s boundary: "...and we can already see the beginnings of this progressive extension of the name ‘Indian’ in Herodotus’ usage."

That Gedrosia and Carmania were within greater India was stressed by Vincent Smith. Eliot clearly saw a role of Iran in early Buddhism.

He boldly suggested that the Buddhist paradise Sukhavati may be linked to the Avestan land of Saukavastan.

G. Gnoli reckons that the oldest areas known to the Iranians were Afghanistan and areas to its east[10], which can only be partly true in view of the great antiquity of Jiroft. Like Frye, Gnoli misses that India and Iran were once interlinked.

A corollary of Gnoli’s claim is that the Avesta is related not only to the RigVeda but also to Buddhist texts.

G. Azarpay of Berkeley has described a Sasanian silver plate depicting a Buddhist Jataka Tale. The Jatakas are a common cultural heritage of both the Indian and Iranians [called Aryans in ancient times].

Dr. D. B. Spooner’s statement that Gotama and Chandragupta were from Iran[11] created a sensation in 1915. But this was rejected by uninformed Jonesian writers.

In this context it is crucial to note that the linking of Gotama with Eastern India was a forgery with no archaeological basis.

Once Gotama, whose title was Sakya, is de-linked from the East, he turns out to be the same as Gaumata[12] of Sakyavati (Sikayavatish) mentioned in the Behistun record.

Even with detailed descriptions of Kapilavastu, the Buddha's far off Sakyan birthplace, its location remains uncertain: Nepal wants to be on the Buddhist tourist circuit, whereas Muslims prefer infidels not come to Kuh-i Khwaja in Seistan (WQ).

Fuhrer's Fraud: Epigraphy and Archaeology of India and Nepal
In any sober history it is crucial to eliminate falsification by ancient authors, misjudgment by historians, loss of artifacts due to earthquakes and floods, and most importantly, archaeological fraud.

Prof. Kyle McCarter, an eminent paleographer at Johns Hopkins University, warns of a “forgery hysteria” that has gripped archaeology circles in Israel[13]. But the problem is far more serious in Indian and Nepalese archaeology[14].

Here even artifacts "unearthed" in professional excavations a century ago need scrutiny [15].

Alarmingly Fuhrer, an editor for Epigraphia Indica, went on rampage with numerous archaeological frauds that have destroyed the very basis of Indian archaeology.

Recently, the British scholar T. A. Phelps[16] has boldly exposed Fuhrer's crimes linked to his so-called discovery of Lumbini [the Buddha's alleged birthplace in Eastern India, modern Nepal].

In his official Progress Report as Archaeological Surveyor that year, Fuhrer copied large slabs of text from a report by Buhler on Sanchi inscriptions, transposing both text and inscriptions, almost verbatim, into the report on his own excavations at a completely different site.

Astonishingly, this wholesale and extensive plagiarism appears to have passed completely unnoticed during this period (including, apparently, by Buhler himself, with whom Fuhrer was soon afterwards in correspondence).

He also -- and more ominously, perhaps, in the light of later events -- fraudulently incised a Brahmi inscription on to a stone statue in the Lucknow Museum at this time, an event which also passed unnoticed.

Phelps rightly suspects that Fuhrer's crimes were exploited by the British Imperialists for subverting history. More>>

Journey to Bamiyan, Land of the Buddha

A Journey to the Bamiyan valley, Afghanistan, to see remarkable Buddhist landmarks (link).

According to non-Jonesian historical and archaeological finds, Gautama Buddha was likely not born in present day Nepal, as is widely believed, but in a defunct Indian-Hellenistic-Persian empire. And he is likely to have been born much earlier than currently placed by some historians. This would explain a number of anomalies. (Details at http://www.ranajitpal.com/ from the 2003 book Non-Jonesian Indology and Alexander by Ranajit Pal). One anomaly is the profusion of Buddhist archaeological sites -- such as Bamiyan with the largest Buddha images in the world -- in modern Afghanistan.

It also accords with the Buddha's own repeated claim to be an Aryan rather than a brahmin or someone from the area. "Aryan" to this day is literally understood to mean "Iranian"; figuratively, it is a "noble" (an epitaph for "enlightened") or a warrior. "Aryan invaders," in ancient Indian history and even older mythology, are believed to have overrun the Indus Valley cultures bringing Sanskrit civilization to the Dravidian people along with phenomenal technological and spiritual advances.

No one disputes that the Buddha came from a kingdom in the north, only how far north, or that he had blue eyes and golden skin and strikingly different features than most of his ass. It also better explains the Dharma's wide influence on Hellenistic Greece even as subsequent religious campaigns (Persian Zoroastrianism, Middle Eastern Islam, indigenous Hinduism, British Christianity, and European Catholicism) overran it in India.

This also helps explain the Sri Lankan insistence and its embroidered histories (Mahavamsa, Buddhavamsa, etc.) link it to Aryan-Indian ancestry rather than Southern Indian (Tamil) or aboriginal (Yakkha) stock. Its flag and lion insignia are essentially that of Iran, and its mythology is recounted in the Ramayana, the story of Rama. The new non-Jonesian view posits that:

"Rama may have been the ruler of the Indus cities, Iran and Sumer. He was also seen to be an ancestor of Gotama Buddha and the Achaemenian kings. I. M. Diakonoff and D. McAlpin have pointed to a link of Elamite with Dravidian, but the links between Elamite and Indian civilization also extend to history. Although Rama is usually thought to be an Aryan, he was called Elamite and in Indian art he is usually painted in blue, whereas his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita are shown as light-skinned." More>>
