PRACTICING THE DHAMMA: From Bondage to Liberation
a Four-Day Hybrid Retreat with Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi
Beginning Sept. 4th and running through Sept. 7th a retreat will study the groups of mental factors that hold us in bondage to samsara, the cycle of repetitive birth and death, and the opposing factors that lead to liberation.
This retreat is based on the Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma, Chapter II, Sections 4–8, and Chapter VII, Sections 3–14 and 24–40.
The retreat includes Dhamma talks, discussion periods, and five sessions of meditation each day. It also provides the opportunity for those who haven’t yet “gone for guidance” (ti-sarana) to go for guidance to the Three Jewels, the first decisive step to formally becoming a follower of the Buddha-Dharma.
This retreat is conducted in hybrid mode, meaning it is both onsite in New York and online worldwide. Those who cannot attend in person can practice at home, participating online over Zoom or YouTube.
Those who wish to join in-person can come to BAUS/Chuang Yen Monastery and stay from Friday evening until Monday afternoon.
The monastery can accept only 50 onsite practitioners. If someone applies after the 50 spaces have been filled, that person will be put on a waiting list and accepted if prior applicants drop out.
Remember, anyone who can’t join in person can join from home via Zoom or YouTube.

Seclusion is for those in meditative absorption (jhana).
As monsoon winds drive the clouds during the rainy season,
so thoughts concerning seclusion
impel me.
A black crow, making its home in a charnel ground
[of corpses], inspires within me
mindfulness

rooted in dispassion for —
the body [2].
One whom others guard not,
who do not guard others,
such a monastic who lies down in ease,
unconcerned
with sensual passions.
With clear waters and massive boulders,
frequented by monkeys and deer,
covered with moss and water weeds,
such rocky crags
refresh me.
I have lived in wildernesses,
canyons, and caves,
isolated dwellings
frequented by predator and prey,
but never have I known
an ignoble, aversive resolve:
"May these beings
be destroyed,
be slaughtered,
fall into pain."
The Teacher has been served by me;
The Awakened One's bidding I have done;
This heavy load I have laid down;
The guide to becoming [3] uprooted.
And the goal for which I set forth
from the home life into the left-home life
I have reached:
the end
of all fetters.
I delight not in death, delight not in living.
I await my time
like a worker his wages.

Ujjuhaana. The Commentary offers two interpretations for this word. The first is that it is a hill covered with jungle and many streams that tend to overflow during the rainy season. The other is that it is the name of a bird that can stay comfortable even when exposed to cold, wind, and rain. The second alternative has been chosen here. K.R. Norman speculates that the term could be written ujjahaana, in which case it would be the present participle for a verb meaning "abandoned or cast off." However, none of the manuscripts support this speculation.

Today in 1850, California became a state. When Mexico ceded the land in the Treaty of Hidalgo, no one told them gold had been found and would lead to the world's greatest gold rush to the island (because California is an island or was for a long time as European cartographers documented many times) with many of the 49ers being Irish in search of riches. The state has since become the most powerful economic and cultural force in the country and in much of the world. Much of California still belongs to Mexico and is divided into two states south of the border, Baja (Lower) California and Sur de (South of) California, a peninsular land that certainly looks like a great island and, when sea levels were higher, may well have been. California started as a free state, avoiding slavery but not for the abolitionist principles for which others fought. The Natives were wiped out and nearly erased, the grizzlies were all killed or driven out (only remaining on Catalina Island, a part of Los Angeles County). Is it time to break away from the rest of the country?

Everyone now knows that Mr. Thomas Matthew Crooks (with short hair because the longhaired gentleman was a misidentification that has yet to be widely corrected by the mainstream media) was a bad shot, so bad he was not allowed into a shooting club.
Yet, we are expected to believe he was marksman enough to get all those shots in. And now we are told that the shot that conveniently murdered him so that he would never have to face questioning or trial was a "one in a million" shot by a marksman on a faraway roof?
Everyone, even Kyle Gass, knows something fishy is going on here, and the smell is only getting fishier.
The number of gunshots does not add up. Professionals say it was a miracle Crooks could have gotten off more than one shot, but we are to believe he fired at least seven times?

We here shot then more different-sounding volley of shots, which we assumed were retaliatory fire. But the Secret Service brags that it fired once for a miraculous kill shot. What was all the other firing? It is clearly from different guns at different distances with different echoes.
