Michael Pollan on Consciousness (NPR)

Michael Pollan’s journey to understand consciousness through Zen and science

Author, explorer Michael Pollan
Science journalist [Buddhist meditator, and American Zen practitioner under Roshi Joan Halifax* at Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico] Michael Pollan has written extensively about the therapeutic benefits of mind-altering psychedelics (lit., "mind-making" substances, which may also be entheogens, hallucinogens, and psychoactive drugs).

His new book, A World Appears: A Journey into Consciousness, asks the central question: What is consciousness?
  • Joan Halifax ( with now toxic Dalai
Lama cropped out except for arm)
*Joan Halifax collaborated on LSD research projects with her ex-husband Stanislav Grof in the 1970s, in addition to other collaborative efforts with Joseph Campbell and Alan Lomax. She is founder of the Ojai Foundation in California, which she led from 1979 to 1989. As a socially engaged Buddhist, Halifax has done extensive work (palliative care) with the dying through her Project on Being with Dying, which she founded. She is on the board of directors of the Mind and Life Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the relationship of science and Buddhism.
“Consciousness has kind of become the secular substitute for the soul [Ancient Greek psyche as in psychology and psyche-delic],” Pollan tells interviewer Terry Gross.

Pollan also talks about current studies on consciousness and whether other animals, plants, bacteria, algae, and programmed hardware/software combinations known as "artificial intelligence" have or can eventually have consciousness. More + AUDIO
NEW BOOK: A World Appears: A Journey into Consciousness

A World Appears: A Journey Into Consciousness
Buddhist author Michael Pollan has a Number 1 best seller in Consciousness & Thought Philosophy. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Change Your Mind, a panoptic exploration of consciousness—what it is, who/what has it, and why—and a meditation on the essence of our humanity.

When it comes to the phenomenon that is consciousness, there is one point on which scientists, philosophers, and artists all agree: It feels [not thinks] like something to be us. Yet the fact that we have subjective experience (sentience) of the world remains one of nature’s greatest mysteries.

How is it that our mental operations are accompanied by [perceptions,] feelings, thoughts, and a sense of "self"?

American Joan Halifax
What would a scientific investigation of our inner life look like, when we have as little distance and perspective on it as fish do of water in the sea?

In A World Appears, Michael Pollan traces the unmapped continent that is consciousness, bringing radically different perspectives—scientific, philosophical, literary, spiritual and psychedelic—to see what each can teach us about this central fact of life.

When neuroscientists began studying consciousness in the early 1990s, they sought to explain how and why three pounds of spongy [tofu like] gray matter could generate a subjective point of view—assuming that the brain is the source of our perceived reality.

Pollan takes readers to the cutting edge of the field, where neuroscientists are entertaining more radical (and less materialist) theories of consciousness.

Plants are conscious, sentient
He introduces us to “plant neurobiologists” searching for the first flicker of consciousness in plants, scientists striving to engineer feelings into AI, and psychologists and novelists seeking to capture the felt experience of this slippery stream of consciousness.

In Pollan’s dazzling exploration of consciousness, he discovers a world far deeper and stranger than this everyday reality.

Eye-opening and mind-expanding, A World Appears takes us into the laboratories of our own brains and minds, hearts and feelings, ultimately showing us how we might make better use of the gift of awareness to more meaningfully connect with the world and what we assume to be our deepest selves. Adam 'n Eve? AI decodes Sumerian tablets

(Origins Explained) AI decoded ancient Sumerian texts and stone tablets (Latin being closer to Akkadian than English). Humans were NOT the first on Earth. There were "gods" (intelligent space beings) here before that. What is this Sumerian language writing system? The mythological story of "Adam and Eve" is older than the Christian and Jewish Bibles. Grok, more naked pictures! (Elon Musk)

If AI created "spicy" Scottish pornography - Let AI do your work for you, okay?

(CNN) Mother [Ashley St. Clair] of Elon Musk's son reacts to his threat for full custody [over threat to fully transition him to a female like Musk's other boy who became a girl] with Erin Moran, talking about Grok's "spicy" mode

This'll be our Epstein secret, right Elon?
If the gay version of Trump, who fellated 'Bubba,' according to Jeffrey Epstein, and the bisexual version of Elon Musk, who desperately wants to fit in with 'tech bros' like Peter 'Petey' Thiel, had a kid, would it be transsexual then transgender then as embarrassing to them as legendary Republican Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter? Let's ask Musk's son-turned-daughter Vivian Wilson.

BRISTOL (CNA): [There are] killer robots, slaughterbots, or Terminators -- official name LAWs or "lethal autonomous weapons" -- from films and books. And the idea of super-intelligent weapons running rampant is still [considered] science fiction. But as artificial intelligence (AI) weapons become increasingly sophisticated, public concern is growing over fears about lack of accountability and the risk of technical failure. [They have already been tested in Venezuela, according to a release by Press Sec'y Karoline Leavitt.] Already we have seen how so-called "neutral" AI have made sexist algorithms and inept content moderation systems, largely because their creators did not understand the technology. But in war, these kinds of misunderstandings could kill civilians or wreck negotiations. For example, a target recognition algorithm could be trained to identify tanks from satellite imagery, but what if all of the images used to train the system featured soldiers in formation around the tank? It might mistake a civilian vehicle passing through a military blockade for a target. More: channelnewsasia.com

Grok undresses women and children

Grok’s ‘Spicy’ Feature lets you Generate Sexually Explicit Images - Sify
Evil spirit "Grok" haunts the artificial app
An update to Elon Musk’s [Frankenstinian] free AI assistant, "Grok," in December 2025 made it easier for people to digitally remove people’s clothes [and show them nude, naked, or partially undressed].

Grok AI (artificial intelligence) is still being used to digitally undress women and children despite suspension pledge Degrading pictures being posted on Elon Musk’s site despite the platform pledging to suspend people who generate them.

Baby mama "Miss Elon Musk" (aka Grimes) in 2012

Grimes and Elon Musk change their daughter's name again, share rare photo: no number names
It's illegal to draw me in undies without consent?
Degrading images of children and women with their clothes digitally removed by Grok AI continue to be shared on Elon Musk’s X, despite the platform’s commitment to suspend users who generate them.

After days of concern over use of the chatbot to alter photographs to create sexualized pictures of real women and children stripped to their underwear without their consent, the UK’s communication’s watchdog, Ofcom, said on Monday that it had made “urgent contact with X and xAI to understand what steps they have taken to comply with their legal duties to protect users in the UK.”
  • [We have to get consent to draw someone? - Not with pencil but with an A.I. helper.]
The Porn Wars (Kelsy Burke)
Ofcom added that it would assess whether an investigation is necessary based on the company’s response.

Meanwhile, politicians and women’s rights campaigners accused the UK government of “dragging its heels” by failing to enact legislation that was passed six months ago making the creation of such intimate images illegal.

Mexican DNA: Who were the Aztecs?

(Beyond Explorer) DNA just revealed who the Indigenous "Aztec" (formerly "Mexica") Native Americans really were with an Austral-Asian signature from 15,000 years BP and a large mixing ground with waves of migration. Who were the Olmecs with their giant heads? Africans who came by boat or dark-skinned Indigenous tribes from the region?

Science contacts intelligent species

(Galaxy Vault) Marine scientists using AI (artificial intelligence) finally decode whale "language" -- and what they've been saying is a surprise. Whale vocalizations? These earthling giants of the ocean have a real language with many dialects and great sophistication? We can now communicate with them? Project CETI (CEtation Translation Initiative), following the model of the SETI program, leads the way.

.
Little mammals on land kill us with pollution
According to current scientific theories, whales (which are mammals not "fish") evolved from land-living mammals.

They must regularly surface to breathe air, although they can remain underwater for long periods of time. Some species, such as the sperm whale, can stay underwater for up to 90 minutes [2]. They have blowholes (modified nostrils) located on top of their heads, through which fresh air is taken in and expelled.

Not just whales, corvids, too!

They are warm-blooded and have a thick layer of fat, called blubber, under their skin. With streamlined fusiform bodies and two limbs that are modified into flippers, whales can travel at speeds of up to 20 knots, though they are not as flexible or agile as seals. Whales produce a great variety of vocalizations, notably the extended songs of the humpback whale.

All killer whales are dolphins.
Although whales are widespread, most species prefer the colder waters of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and migrate to the equator to give birth. Species such as humpbacks and blue whales are capable of travelling thousands of miles without feeding.

Males typically mate with multiple females every year, but females only mate every two to three years. Calves are typically born in the spring and summer; females bear all the responsibility for raising them. Mothers in some species fast and nurse their young for one to two years. More

Science: AI decodes CROW language

(Galaxy Vault) Is a Crow a surprisingly intelligent "avian ape" smaller than a Raven?

Mahakala
Ven. Thanissaro (trans) edited by Wisdom Quarterly (Thag 2.16 PTS: Thag 151-152)

A swarthy woman,
[preparing a corpse for cremation]
crow-like and enormous,
breaking one thigh then the other,
breaking one arm then the other,
cracking open the head
like a claypot of curds,
sits with them heaped up beside her.

Whoever, unknowing,
makes acquisitions,
that fool
returns over and over
to disappointment and suffering.
Discerning,
making no acquisitions,
may I never again lie
with my head cracked open.

Sankicca
Ven. Thanissaro (trans) edited by Wisdom Quarterly (Thag 11.1 PTS: Thag 597-607)
What do you want in the woods, my boy?
You're like a bird [1] exposed to the rain.
Monsoons refresh you.
Seclusion is for those in meditative absorption (jhana).
As monsoon winds drive the clouds during the rainy season,
so thoughts concerning seclusion impel me.

A black crow, making its home in a charnel ground
[of corpses], inspires within me mindfulness
— rooted in dispassion for — the body [2].

One whom others guard not, who do not guard others,
such a monastic who lies down in ease, unconcerned
with sensual passions.

With clear waters and massive boulders,
frequented by monkeys and deer,
covered with moss and water weeds,
such rocky crags refresh me.

I have lived in wildernesses, canyons, and caves,
isolated dwellings frequented by predator and prey,
but never have I known an ignoble, aversive resolve:
"May these beings be destroyed, be slaughtered, fall into pain."
The Teacher has been served by me;
The Awakened One's bidding I have done;
This heavy load I have laid down;
The guide to becoming [3] uprooted.
And the goal for which I set forth from the home life into the left-home life
I have reached: the end of all fetters.
I delight not in death, delight not in living.
I await my time like a worker his wages.
I delight not in death, delight not in living.
I await my time mindful, alert.

NOTES
  • 1. Ujjuhaana. The Commentary offers two interpretations for this word. The first is that it is a hill covered with jungle and many streams that tend to overflow during the rainy season. The other is that it is the name of a bird that can stay comfortable even when exposed to cold, wind, and rain. The second alternative has been chosen here. K.R. Norman speculates that the term could be written ujjahaana, in which case it would be the present participle for a verb meaning "abandoned or cast off." However, none of the manuscripts support this speculation.
  • 2. In other words, the sight of the crow taking up residence in skulls and other body parts provided a chastening perspective on how the mind takes up residence in the body [for each rebirth in the sensual sphere].
  • 3. The guide to becoming [rebirth, relinking, rearising, reappearing, being reborn] is craving.
