Guns N' Roses back from oblivion (video)

Axl N' Slash's Guns N' Roses, 2023; Crazy Singing, 5/10/22; JoBlo Originals, 7/15/22 (WTF Happened to This Celebrity); Seth Auberon, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
The rockstar celebrity who was once an angel-face criminal ET alien is now a fat ginger.

We just came out with "The General"
Now Lehra H. can rest in peace. The likelihood of GN'R producing another hit were, we said years ago, about as likely as Chinese Democracy, the name of their album, ever coming to fruition. Pres. Xi won't stand for it! Axl Rose (who now looks like a young, thin Benny Hill) is a pale skeleton in a wig held on with a big bandana, ala Sebastian Bach. Long in the tooth, they're older than the Stones -- but much better players thanks to Slash lending the band his magic. Somehow Rose's throat healed and he can scream and hold notes. It's amazing. We thought this had to be an unreleased gem from back in the Use Your Illusion days, but it's new.

Perhaps, the new Guns n' Roses album
LYRICS: Perhaps I was wrong/ When I didn’t see you, hey, hey/ Perhaps I was wrong, hey/ When I don’t believe you/ But how would I know how it feels/ Or what it takes to be you/ I’ve been so upset/ Harboring this hate for days/ Hey, my sense of rejection/ Hey, hey/ Is no excuse for my behavior, hey/ You pulled the gun, hey, hey/ That shot and crucified my savior/ Now he is no more and I am without you/ Just like I was before/ The way I used to be, hey/ What a weight upon your shoulders that you don’t need/ My heart bleeds for me//

I can pull off uniforms and odd hats.
CHORUS: Got a lot more than I bargained for/ You’re all alone now/ You forgot about the others you were fighting for/ You’re all alone/ Ooh, sold out to the ones that you once ignored/ You’re all alone now/ You used to be a little crazy now there’s so much more/ You’re all alone//

Perhaps I was wrong, hey, hey/ When I didn’t see you, hey, hey/ Perhaps I was wrong, hey/ When I don’t believe you/ But how would I know how it feels/ Or what it takes to be you/ I’ve been so upset/ Harboring this hate for days/ Oh-oh, what a weight upon your shoulders that you don’t need/ My heart bleeds for me/

Ooh, got a lot more than I bargained for/ You’re all alone now/ You forgot about the others you were fighting for/ You’re all alone/ Ooh, sold out to the ones that you once ignored/ You’re all alone now/ You used to be a little crazy now there’s so much more/ You’re all alone

Review: Not well received in parts of Europe

WTF Happened to Axl Rose?
(JoBlo Originals) July 15, 2022: As far as rockstars go, they don’t get much bigger than Axl Rose. As the frontman of Guns N’ Roses, he became an instant legend when the band's debut album, Appetite for Destruction, was released in 1987. Spawning hits that are still iconic 25 years later (with the soundtrack for Thor: Love and Thunder featuring them prominently), including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and “Sweet Child of Mine,” the album broke out from the hard rock/heavy metal genre to become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, they were one of the biggest bands in the world, with Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 also major sellers. Axl Rose was everywhere, especially when the band started doing ballads like “Don’t Cry” and “November Rain.” Yet, after the release of their covers album, The Spaghetti Incident, Guns N’ Roses started to fall apart, with iconic guitarist Slash and pokey bassist Duff McKagan leaving acrimoniously. Rose would spend most of the next decade working on a follow-up album, Chinese Democracy, with an ever-revolving lineup of members, with the album in question a critical and commercial disappointment. In the meantime, rumors about Rose’s behavior and sobriety ran rampant.

This episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity tries to separate fact from fiction and celebrate the fact that Rose has since reunited much of the original band and that they still sell out stadiums worldwide.

Wonder Women: Latin Raquel Welch (video)

Editor Crystal Quintero, Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly; Raquel Welch, Lynda Carter, Cher

Raquel Welch and Cher "I'm a Woman"
Cher's DVD, Closer to the Truth: The Whole Story, a two-disc set celebrating her 50th anniversary as an entertainer. Here she and the inimitable Raquel Welch perform "I'm a Woman" live on The Cher Show (1975).

Helen Reddy performs the iconic "I Am Woman," an anthem for the ages with lyrics included

Latin Wonder Woman Lynda Carter
I always confuse American sex symbol Raquel Welch with Lynda Carter, so much that they've been one person in my mind. Maybe it's because they're both Latinas! "Raquel Welch" was born Jo Raquel Tejada, and Lynda Carter was once Linda Córdova. Imagine that, the most beautiful women in the US actually being Latin but nearly no one knows it. There was One Million Years B.C. with Carter, no, Welch. Then there was Wonder Woman with Welch, no, Carter. Who could forget her in the cult classic Bedazzled, beautiful and a sense of humor. Comedy is rare. Then there was that tragic marriage to singer-politician Sonny Bono... Oh, wait, that Cher, the pre-Lady Gaga, preternatural ageless diva.

POEM: "Until I Come to Rest"

Poet Joseph Nicks Liberato edited by Dhr. Seven and Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly

UNTIL I COME TO REST
with time left to labor
happily hammering away
at this amorphous mound
of long-unfinished work

until i come to rest i wonder how much of this
matters to anyone but me

some of the time left i wander
from highway to hilltop
from shadows to shore
just trying to take it all in

until i come to rest i wonder how so much
of it still escapes me

some of the time left i slumber
at least until my conscience intervenes
and drags me from my dreamlessness
back up to the day's unrest

until i come to rest i wonder why
i even sleep at all

some of the time left i sit here
on the edge of the night and bed
with the same old silence seeping through
the numbness of all this new improved noise

until i come to rest i wonder where it is
everyone's gotten off to...

Falling in love with "Wonder Woman" (video)

The only way to fight WW I is with divine intervention via the Devi Diana (Wonder Woman)

The real origin story of the first big-time female superhero is a sordid tale of a polyamorous U.S. psychiatrist Dr. Marston and his bisexual female lovers, who helped him develop her.
.
Gal Gadot as live action Wonder Woman
The demigoddess Gal Gadot-Varsano, 32, the Brigitte Bardot (the beauty who committed to compassion for animals in the Buddhist capital of Bodh Gaya) of our day.

She is a superheroine and easy to love. Why?

The real Wonder? (S.T.)
She is the best of a modern female and is traditionally feminine as well, gaining one without losing the other.

We want females to be strong, smart, courageous, beautiful, tender, and compassionate. Gadot is it.

She's just a role model, something denied to the cartoon version of the character by the United Nations, an actor, a reader of scripted words in fantasy sequences. Maybe.

Or maybe she's a prototype for anyone wishing to embody the divine feminine. Either will do in this day of PR firm impression management and flimsy social media personas. When even our president is functionally illiterate, it's nice that Hollywood can find well educated Thespians with charisma, charm, and chops.

Is this Wonder Woman a feminist icon? If Latina Lynda Cordova Carter didn't make "Diana Prince" one in the campy 1970's television version, Gadot has done it with her fine action-movie acting.

A Guide to Void-Gazing Meditation

Editors, Wisdom Quarterly; (voices.yahoo.com)
The boundless sky or akasha includes space (bbc.co.uk)

Deep in meditation (wiki)
This is a variation on a Tibetan meditation known as "Sky-Gazing." It is named this because the practice involves gazing in a relaxed way at the sky as one meditates. This meditation is essentially the same and can be used indoors or wherever even if the sky is not immediately visible.

Begin by taking a seat with back erect, hands resting on lap. Alternatively, lie down comfortably, but not so comfortably that sleep comes on. Close the eyes, and take a few calming breaths as eyes settle gently behind the eyelids, gazing gently ahead. To relax even further, repeat silently the seed mantra, Emaho (ay-mah-ho). It is Tibetan for "wondrous!" and is the core-teaching of Tibetan meditation. Experience the wonder of being alive, sitting there in immersed in our original Buddha nature.

Gazing at Occupy LA (WQ)
Imagine staring out into a vast emptiness, a deep dark void where nothing exists. When this can be imagined easily, begin to breathe in and out as deeply as possible while remaining relaxed. The focus should be on the out-breath, imagining that with each exhalation one is breathing essence out into that void, becoming one with its spacious luminosity. No ego exists here. Feel yourself expanding beyond any corporeal confines, filling that void. More

New Hippies through the Decades (video)

Amber Dorrian, Seven, Macpherson, Pauper Poet (Wisdom Quarterly)
1960s: "Wonderwall" with George Harrison

Imagine a world where we all got along. Nothing divides us but our arbitrary categories and allegiances. We say we're this, not that. Imagine converting to all religions, clinging to none. Imagine accepting everyone, rejecting none. Imagine not judging, and without judgment, acceptance and compassion.

1970s: "In every dream home a heartache. And every step I take takes me further from heaven."Is there a heaven? I'd like to think so. Standards of living, they're rising daily. But home, O sweet home, it's only a saying..." (Roxy Music).

The Buddha's Dharma is universal and leads to light. There is no reason to reject anything or anyone. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain seemed to be onto something. But even before that, the Beatles understood, and Led Zeppelin imagining themselves traveling through Kashmir. Then Rave Culture caught on in the very next decade, first in the UK then the US. And there may be no better example of techno than Makai's remix of "Five Elements Ninja."
  • "Instead of money and power, rave called for empathy, intimacy, spirituality, and the joy of losing yourself in the crowd."
1980s: Rave culture is born

Of course many think the 90s were a dark period of materialism, blind ambition, and chemical drugs. But there was crunchiness and a longing for days gone by, as funny as it may seem that three decades on, the Sixties were still the only example of "peace, love, and happiness" many Americans had, that and Grateful Dead shows followed by Phish. This was followed in the aughts (00s) by endless free festivals that continue to this day.

Rainbow Spirit

1990s: Festivals, festivals, and more plans for festivals

Then the music industry fell into a dormant period, at least rock music did, until one Buddhism inspired some depressive Seattle slackers to wish for a "final end of suffering." The singer named his new band "Nirvana" as he tried to walk the path and cross over from the muddy banks of the Wishkah. It has smelled like Teen Spirit deodorant ever since. And in 1999, it culminated in a post-punk MTV orgy of violence and greed.
  • Kurt Cobain: "At this point I have a request for our fans. If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color, or women, please do this one favor for us... leave us the ***K alone! Don't come to our shows, and don't buy our records."

2000s: Y2K began in 1999 with MTV's version of Woodstock

The Fenians, Irish Republic Proclamation: "All men are born with equal rights, and in associating together to protect one another and share public burdens, justice demands that such associations should rest upon a basis which maintains equality instead of destroying it. We therefore declare that, unable longer to endure the curse of monarchical government, we aim at founding a republic, based on universal suffrage, which shall secure to all the intrinsic value of their labour" (The Irish People to the World 1867).

Suburban angst builds before Los Angeles rises

2010s:
"And now The End is near. And so I face the final curtain. Ha, ha, ha. You can't, I'm not a queer. I'll state my case, of which I'm certain. I've lived a life that's full. I traveled each and every highway. And more, much more than this, I did it my way" (Sid Vicious).

Eighth Wonder of the World

Maitreya Project's old plan; below, new conception (skyscrapercity.com)

Significance of the Maitreya Project By Seven Jaini

Creating the "eighth wonder of the world" in Kushinagar, India (ancient Kusinara, where the Buddha chose -- contrary to the protests of his contemporaries) to pass into final nirvana. Shakyamuni Buddha chose this site quite purposely because, as he explained, in ancient times, this had been the center of a famed and prosperous kingdom and one known to previous buddhas.

20. "'Here the Tathagata passed away into the state of Nirvana in which no element of clinging remains!' This, Ananda, is a place that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.

21. "These, Ananda, are the four places that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence. And truly there will come to these places, Ananda, pious bhikkhus and bhikkhunis, laymen and laywomen, reflecting: 'Here the Tathagata was born! Here the Tathagata became fully enlightened in unsurpassed, supreme Enlightenment! Here the Tathagata set rolling the unexcelled Wheel of the Dhamma! Here the Tathagata passed away into the state of Nibbana in which no element of clinging remains!'

22. "And whoever, Ananda, should die on such a pilgrimage with his heart established in faith, at the breaking up of the body, after death, will be reborn in a realm of heavenly happiness."

Ananda, on discerning what the Buddha was intending to do in Kusinara, cried:

Ananda's Grief
32. Then the Venerable Ananda went into the vihara [monastic residence] and leaned against the doorpost and wept: "I am still but a learner [i.e., unenlightened], and still have to strive for my own perfection. But, alas, my Master, who was so compassionate towards me, is about to pass away!"

33. And the Blessed One spoke to the monastics, saying: "Bhikkhus, where is Ananda?" "The Venerable Ananda, Lord, has gone into the vihara and there stands leaning against the door post and weeping: 'I am still but a learner, and still have to strive for my own perfection. But, alas, my Master, who was so compassionate towards me, is about to pass away!'"

34. Then the Blessed One asked a certain recluse to bring the Venerable Ananda...And the Venerable Ananda went to the Blessed One, bowed down to him, and sat down on one side.

35. Then the Blessed One spoke to the Venerable Ananda, saying: "Enough, Ananda! Do not grieve, do not lament! For have I not taught from the very beginning that with all that is dear and beloved there must be change, separation, and severance? Of that which is born, come into being, compounded, and subject to decay, how can one say: 'May it not come to dissolution!'? There can be no such state of things. Now for a long time, Ananda, you have served the Tathagata with loving-kindness in deed, word, and thought, graciously, pleasantly, with a whole heart and beyond measure. Great good have you gathered, Ananda! Now you should put forth energy, and soon you too will be free from the taints" [i.e., enlightened].

Ananda then protested that Kusinara was not sufficiently famous for such a great thing to happen there:

The Past Glory of Kusinara
41. When this had been said, the Venerable Ananda spoke to the Blessed One, saying: "Let it not be, Lord, that the Blessed One should pass away in this mean place, this uncivilized township in the midst of the jungle, a mere outpost of the province. There are great cities, Lord, such as Campa, Rajagaha, Savatthi, Saketa, Kosambi, and Benares — let the Blessed One have his final passing away in one of those. For in those cities dwell many wealthy nobles and brahmins and householders who are devotees of the Tathagata [Buddha], and they will render due honor to the remains of the Tathagata."

42. "Do not say that, Ananda! Do not say: 'This mean place, this uncivilized township in the midst of the jungle, a mere outpost of the province.' In times long past, Ananda, there was a king by the name of Maha Sudassana, who was a universal monarch, a king of righteousness, a conqueror of the four quarters of the earth, whose realm was established in security, and who was endowed with the seven jewels. And that King Maha Sudassana, Ananda, had his royal residence here at Kusinara, which was then called Kusavati, and it extended twelve yojanas [84 miles] from east to west, and seven [49 miles] from north to south.

43. "And mighty, Ananda, was Kusavati, the capital, prosperous and well populated, much frequented by people, and abundantly provided with food. Just as the royal residence of the deities, Alakamanda, is mighty, prosperous, and well populated, much frequented by deities and abundantly provided with food, so was the royal capital of Kusavati.

44. "Kusavati, Ananda, resounded unceasingly day and night with ten sounds — the trumpeting of elephants, the neighing of horses, the rattling of chariots, the beating of drums and tabours, music and song, cheers, the clapping of hands, and cries of 'Eat, drink, and be merry!'

This is the site chosen by the Tibetan Maitreya Project. Maitreya ("friend" Pali, Metteyya) is the "buddha to come." The historical Buddha mentioned that the next fully-enlightened one was already residing in the Tusita deva world awaiting rebirth on earth to strive toward full enlightenment and re-establish the true Dharma for the benefit of devas and humans.

This has sometimes become a basis for laxity, as some Buddhists mistakenly await a messianic figure -- perennially claimed to have already arrived in the form of a self-aggrandizing person. This claim is mistaken because in the distant past, humans lived far longer. So too in the distant future, by slow increments, they will live far longer lives than they do now. (The time between buddhas is better measured in geologic than historical terms). Imagine a time when the average human lifespan is 200 or 1,000 or 10, 000 or 20,000 years. That will happen much sooner than the arrival of the Maitreya the historical Buddha was talking about. The Buddha gave a clear indication of WHEN Maitreya would be arriving by saying:

"And in that time of the people with an eighty-thousand-year lifespan, there will arise in the world a Blessed Lord, an arahant fully enlightened Buddha named Metteyya, endowed with wisdom and conduct, a Well-farer, Knower of the worlds, incomparable Trainer of [persons] to be tamed, Teacher of [devas] and humans, enlightened and blessed, just as I am now."
— DN26 The Long Discourses of the Buddha (formerly Thus Have I Heard), Maurice Walshe (trans.), Boston: Wisdom Publications, 1987, p. 403f.

Until such time as Maitreya arrives to again turn the Wheel of the Dharma, which will have by then completely disappeared, a wonderfully tall statue of him will sit facing Nepal and Tibet in Kushinagar, India. The Maitreya Project and the Relics Tour are committed to funding a structure so massive that it will be the "eighth wonder of the world."
