California has only ONE native palm tree

Los Angeles is famous for its palm tree imports
California has only one "native" palm, yet many outsiders and locals believe that California is "The Land of Palms."

The non-native palms are everywhere — along the coast, along the boulevards, in the movies, in front yards — but most are brought in from somewhere else [like Hawaii] to give California a distinctive look, even if it’s a look that belongs to some other place.

Non-native palms are high-maintenance trees, which are hard to keep small and pruned. Next to eucalyptus trees (also non-native), deaths by tree-pruners are high with palms.

Regardless of species, palms can be hazardous though they have many valuable traits.

Let’s look at some of the value of the native palm, particularly to Indigenous peoples (Kizh, Tongva, Chumash, Tataviam, etc.) of the past.

Ever heard of Palm Springs, home of the gay and curious, players and gamblers, rich and famous?

Palms Springs got its name from the many native palms that grow in and around that area, particularly at Native village sites, such as Palm Canyon.

Is this the Los Angeles Palm? No.
Palms often grow where there is water, in desert oases, which is why there often came to be village sites at such locations.

Most people may think bright dates when they think of palms [no, we think of precious coconuts]. There are plenty of commercial date palms grown in the California desert, all originating from the Middle East.

But the fruit of the native palm is a small and black like a marble. Ripe fruit can be picked up on the ground to consume.

Chew the flesh off the hard stone (seed). The flesh is mildly sweet. Native people had several ways to eat these black fruits, and many still do so today.

One method is to grind the entire fruit — seed and flesh — into a flour and use that flour to make bread, biscuits, or pudding. The fruits can also be gently ground so that only the flesh comes off. That flesh is then used as a sweetening agent for other foods.

Another method is to boil the entire fruit, which yields a mildly sweet water. That water can be used as a beverage or used to sweeten other foods.

Botany
Pre-Los Angeles map of Tongva villages (Tongaavar)
Worldwide there are about 3,000 species of palm trees. They are very conspicuous trees throughout California, widely planted as a street and park tree.

Typically, they have a large trunk, fat or thin, rising as tall as a five-story building. The fronds are either palmately or pinnately lobed.

The palmate leaves are formed on a stem, the fan palms. The leaves can also form as pinnately lobed leaves or feather fronds.

The fruits are usually drupes and are generally called dates. The common date palm has sweet fruit and two-lobed seeds. The fruit of the native is black and round-to-ovate, which comes from the native California palm (Washingoni filifera).

The "native" California palm was very useful but is now rarely seen, whereas the Golden State’s most iconic palms are from somewhere else. More

New Year's Eve WISDOM

Beauty is truth: What we do New Year's...
An Asian girlfriend once said a very striking thing: Whatever one does on New Year's Day one will be doing the whole year. Then when others said it, well, how can one doubt something that gets repeated?

Is it true? Truth is beauty, beauty is truth. Who knows? So we asked around, and we were amazed at how many Eastern cultures share a belief in this truism:

Seeing is believing (YATL)
Of course, it's self-evident, it's Ancient Chinese Wisdom (which says "It's gaay, i.e., "things not to be done, bad luck, superstitious, inauspicious").

It's the Knowledge of the Ages (like the many strictures and pieces of Old Wives Tales from the Indus Valley Civilization, Egypt, India, Greece, Sumeria, Rome, Angkor, Mesoamerica...).

It's what nearly everyone in Asia thinks and/or takes for granted. Some might go so far as to call it "common sense," more superstition or custom than controlled empirical research like we pretend forms the basis of all our beliefs.

We asked Sri Lankan monks. Ask your Italian grandmother; she probably thinks so, too.

Dharma Wheel.svgSomehow we lose sight of things in the West or argue that reality must somehow accord with our theories. The data is the data, theory the theory. It is always the job of the theory to accommodate the data, never the other way around.

Well, we massaged the data for one thing.
If we start shifting the data -- the observations, the bare facts -- we'll distort things.

And we'll end up with a beautiful, internally-consistent theory that is just too gorgeous and elegant not to cling to.

But it won't be true. There's the rub. Reality is messy, fuzzy, so much bigger than we normally imagine.

A map is just a map, an outline. It can't be very detailed or it would have to be as big as the land and area it represents, in which case it would be no use lugging it around.

The finger points at the Moon. The finger is not the Moon. The sight of the Moon is not the Moon. The Moon is the Moon. Let's remember that as we meditate the new year in this year. Party by night, but visit a Buddhist temple or quiet spot for meditation in the morning of the first day of the year, Friday.

Happy New Year's from Wisdom Quarterly!

Basic points unifying Theravāda and Mahāyāna is a very important Buddhist ecumenical statement

It was created in 1967 during the First Congress of the World Buddhist Sangha Council (WBSC).

Its founder, Secretary-General Ven. Pandita Pimbure Sorata Thera, requested that Ven. Walpola Rahula present a concise formula for the unification of all the different Buddhist traditions.

This text was then unanimously approved by the Council (Norm Phelps, 2004, The Great Compassion: Buddhism and Animal Rights, Lantern Books. p. 45).

Why are more women drinking? (video)

Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly; Elizabeth Aguilera (KPCC Health Reporter), host Larry Mantle, AirTalk (scpr.org); Seth Macfarlane (Family Guy, American Dad)
Drain bramage, schmrain damage, if a man can get a DUI, I want one, too! (cracked.com)
Drunk without a real-friend's protection (see sutra below). Oh, alcohol! (cracked.com)

Women are drinking more despite the risks
Yum, it's liquid ignorance.
Women in the U.S. are consuming more alcohol than they have in decades past, and they face greater health risks for doing so.

For one, a woman's body has fewer enzymes for breaking down alcohol [a poison from the fermentation (i.e., decomposition) process] and less water weight to diffuse its effects. This means women are at greater risk for liver damage and disease.

(Quagmire/Family Guy) "OMG, but you know you love it," your friends will say. And you have to wonder why you keep "dating" the same types of guys. No one has sympathy for a lush.

Researchers also say drinking increases a woman's chances of getting breast cancer, as studies have shown that alcohol can raise estrogen levels. They also say that the way women are drinking today -- binge drinking, foregoing meals -- is cause for medical concern.

Experts say the rise in "risky drinking" is due to increased social acceptability [from shows like "Sex and the City"], gender "equality" [or the illusion of striving for it], culture and even a preference for hard liquor over beer.

WARNING: Potential trigger as Carrie & Co. do another "Ladies' Night"!

Women are also being arrested [and being sent to prison which, after all, is "equality," too] at an increasing rate for driving under the influence.

A recent report by KPCC analyzing 20 years of California DMV records shows a significant increase in the number of women being arrested for driving under the influence.

The DMV reports that women made up about 24 percent of DUI arrests statewide in 2011, the last year statistics are available. That's an increase over the 11 percent of DUI arrests in 1989.

WARNING: Sexually suggestive with cartoonish alcohol consumption!

Anything Goes!
What's behind this increase in alcohol consumption among women? Should more be done to educate women [who are already highly educated and at some level well aware of the hazards and pitfalls] about the dangers of alcohol?

I didn't mean for that to happen. - Another drink?
[Or, like other successful campaigns, do emotions have to be brought into play with emotional appeals, better behavioral models and ideas of what's "cool" and acceptable. Are you a mom, do you drink and drive? Are you single, do you have sex with people you would not have otherwise? Are you a student, do you see a future vomiting in a toilet? Yum! Party on!] LISTEN (16:37)
SUTRA: Drinking Buddies: With "friends" like that...
Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly
Health is wealth, and here's how to lose both.
In the Advice to Householders Discourse (Sigalovada Sutra, DN 31), the Buddha explains the "Six Channels for Dissipating Wealth."

These include drinking alcohol (indulging in intoxicants which occasion heedlessness), roaming the streets at all hours, bad diversions, gambling, associating with the foolish, and idleness.

The Buddha goes further to explain why these lead to ruin. Each has six miserable consequences. Alcohol leads to: (1) loss of wealth, (2) increase in quarrels, (3) susceptibility to disease, (4) loss of reputation, (5) indecent exposure, and (6) weakened intellect.

When roaming the streets at all hours (usually due to drinking), we are: unprotected and unguarded, as is our family and property, and we are suspected of crimes, subject to false rumors, and we encounter many troubles.

What's wrong with "unsavory shows"? We remain restless and agitated, wondering: Where is there dancing, singing, music, recitals, and this and that distraction? We never find inner peace or enlightenment -- even though that's what we say we're searching for. (Entertainment is not wrong in and of itself, only that it takes us away from our quest and leads to financial ruin).

Let's go underage drink! If it's good enough for adults...
What's wrong with gambling? Isn't it just a pleasant pastime to help Las Vegas' economy? The Buddha explains in detail, but here is the biggest one: associating with "the foolish." Any gambler, any wastrel, any drunkard, any cheater, any swindler, any violent person -- in brief,, any "fool" (bala) -- is one's associate and comp. And with friends like that, who needs enemies?

"Idle hands are the devil's helper," grandma says: Addiction to laying around (with the hangover blues) means we are not inclined to put forth effort to get anything done, instead making excuses: "It’s too cold! It’s too hot! It’s too late! It’s too early! I’m too hungry! I’m too full!" Living like this, we leave many (karmically) profitable things left undone. Wealth is left unacquired, and savings dwindle away.

These are just some of the ways of losing money and losing our health the Buddha explained and warned about 25 centuries ago. More

How to get your Zombie to kill

    Making Manchurian Candidates?
Phil Stewart (Reuters, "Drug Turns Crime Victims Into Zombies"); Wisdom Quarterly
What does a Manchurian Candidate look like? (indybay.org)

There's nothing to fear but fear (and zombies).
Halloween and the Day of the Dead are coming soon, so here's a true-life scary story.

BOGOTA, Colombia - The last thing Andrea Fernandez recalls before being drugged is holding her newborn baby on a Bogota city bus.

Police found her three days later, muttering to herself and wandering topless along the median strip of a busy highway. Her face was badly beaten and her son was gone.

Fernandez is just one of hundreds of victims every month who, according to Colombian hospitals, are temporarily turned into zombies by a home-grown drug called scopolamine,  which has been embraced by thieves and rapists.

[Expect to see scop' on the dance floor as soon as pushers manage to get ayahuasca, iboga, and the dreaded GLINT into tablet form.]

"When I woke up in the hospital, I asked for my baby and nobody said anything. They just looked at me," Fernandez said, weeping. Police believe her son Diego was taken by a gang which traffics in infants.

WATCH: To be cool in school Jerri Blank had to stoop to glint (Strangers With Candy)

Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, scopolamine is slipped into drinks and sprinkled onto food. Victims become so docile that they have been known to help thieves rob their homes and empty their bank accounts. Women have been drugged repeatedly over days and gang-raped or rented out as prostitutes.

In the case of Fernandez, the mother of three was rendered submissive enough to surrender her youngest child.

Most troubling for police is the way the drug acts on the brain. Since scopolamine completely blocks the formation of memories, unlike most date-rape drugs used in the United States and elsewhere, it is usually impossible for victims to ever identify their aggressors.

"When a patient (of U.S. date-rape drugs) is under hypnosis, he or she usually recalls what happened.

But with scopolamine, this isn't possible because the memory was never recorded," said Dr. Camilo Uribe, the world's leading expert on the drug. Scopolamine has a long, dark history in Colombia dating back to before the Spanish conquest.

Legend has it that Colombian Indian tribes used the drug to bury alive the wives and slaves of fallen chiefs so that they would quietly accompany their masters into the afterworld.

Nazi "Angel of Death" Joseph Mengele experimented on scopolamine as an interrogation drug. And scopolamine's sedative and amnesia-producing qualities were used by mothers in the early 20th century to help them through childbirth.

Finding the drug in Colombia these days is not hard.

How to react to fear of secret-zombie agents and operatives? Buy a kit? (Examiner).

The tree which naturally produces scopolamine grows wild around the capital and is so famous in the countryside that mothers warn their children not to fall asleep below its yellow and white flowers.

The tree is popularly known as the "borrachero," or "get-you-drunk," and the pollen alone is said to conjure up strange dreams.

"We probably should put some sort of fence up," jokes biologist Gustavo Morales at Bogota's botanical gardens, eyeing children playing with borrachero seeds everywhere. "If you ate a few of those, it would kill you."

Although scopolamine can be easily extracted from the seeds, experienced criminals hardly ever bother with them, police say.

Pure, cheap scopolamine is brought across the border from neighboring Ecuador, where the borrachero tree is harvested for medical purposes, Uribe said. The alkaloid is used legally in medicines across the world to treat everything from motion sickness to the tremors of Parkinson's disease.

The use of scopolamine by criminals appears to be confined to Colombia, at least for now, and it's not clear why the drug is such a rampant problem in Colombia. Some analysts blame it on a culture of crime in the Andean nation, home to the world's largest cocaine and kidnapping industries, not to mention Latin America's longest-running [CIA-sponsored] guerrilla war.

There are so many scopolamine cases that they usually don't make the news unless particularly bizarre. One such incident involved three young Bogota women who preyed on men by smearing the drug on their breasts and luring their victims to take a lick.

Losing all willpower, the men readily gave up their bank access codes. The breast-temptress thieves then held them hostage for days while draining their accounts.

The U.S. Embassy in Bogota takes scopolamine very seriously and offers staff tips on how avoid being drugged. One piece of advice may seem obvious: Don't let your drinks out of your sight when at a Bogota bar or nightclub.

Still, at least three visiting U.S. government employees here have been drugged and robbed over the past two years. Other American victims from time to time appear at the embassy seeking help, still shaking off a scopolamine hangover.

"I remember one case; an American reported being drugged," an embassy official said. "He says to his doorman, 'Why did you let them walk out with my stuff.' The doorman says, 'Because you told me to.'"

    First Date Deal-Breakers

Western Buddhists mingling on the beaches of Thailand

Whether you're fifteen or fifty, there's nothing quite like a first date. The excitement. The jitters. The potential for romance... And the potential for some big mistakes. If you're hoping date #1 might lead to date #2, here are a few things Foxy thinks you should avoid...

Fakin' It... Why invite a guy to a ball game if you hate it? Or ask a girl to a Bergman festival, when you love bad brutes and big guns? It's great to try new things, but it's most important to be yourself. Faking it can backfire by making you seem false, flighty, or even desperate -- and no one wants to date that.

Your Junk-Ridden Chariot Awaits... Unless she's a diva extraordinaire, your date won't expect a limo or sports car to pick her up. But she also may not dig your car's "lived-in" interior, filled with old soda cans, banana peels, sweaty gym clothes, and matted newspapers. Clean out your car, make it presentable, and get gas -- otherwise your date may end up running on empty.

Some Like It Loud... Screamin', smashin' rock concerts have their own charm, but not for a first date. You'll spend the evening nodding nervously at one another and trying to keep good rhythm, while the deafening music rages on. The same goes for loud bars or restaurants -- who wants to shout all night long while you're trying to get to know each other?

Primpin' Like the Prom... Getting dolled up in a stiff suit-and-tie or frilly dress isn't the way to go on a first date. It's likely to make your date feel like they're seventeen again and headed to the gymnasium for some pink punch and slow-dancing. There are plenty of ways to look nice without looking overdone. Guys, opt for a crisp pair of khakis or cords and a button-down shirt. Gals, slip on some wide-leg slacks and a feminine blouse... or a casual skirt and sweater. No corsage required!

Friends ‘n' Family... There is much to be said for the power of pairs. In the beginning, it's best to keep it to the two of you. Bringing over-zealous friends and over-protective relatives into the mix is a lot to hit a person with on the first date. Start slow and get to know one another first.

Five-Star Fancy or Carelessly Casual... Avoid either. Fancy first dates can be a huge mistake. Pricey restaurants often feel fussy and put undue pressure on your wallet and your evening. If your date does treat you to dinner at a pricier place, don't order the most expensive thing on the menu -- that lobster with truffle champagne sauce is definitely a deal-breaker! If you end up going low-key, you should still steer clear of cheap chain restaurants and other overly casual joints. Be thoughtful! Try a fun picnic in the park or even an evening of bowling? Good, cheap fun is oh so romantic!

Bed-Lam... If you both like each other, there will be plenty of time for canoodling, caressing, and luxurious mornings lounging in bed. Don't rush it. Let the first date be informal and comfortable, by setting aside the stress of, you know... (S-E-X).

Getting Snippy... A first date isn't the time to give your locks a major snip, change your hair color, or do anything else drastic (like try out a pair of ultra high heels you can't walk in). You want to feel your most relaxed and comfortable, so save the experimentation for another time.

Now, Back to Me... Info-swapping is one of the centerpieces of your date. What music you like, how much you hate eggplant, whether you're a cat or dog person, and so on. But if you spend the whole time blabbing about yourself without giving your date equal talking time, you're nothing but a buzzkill.

Smells Like Desperation... People can smell a desperate singleton a mile away, so avoid punctuating dinner with not-so-subtle comments like, "My mother would love you!" Or ending the evening with, "So, do you want to go out again? Maybe on Wednesday? At six?"

Return to Sender... Texting, whether you love it or hate it, don't do it! Even if your date is in the restroom. Even if you think you can sneak it under the table where no one will notice. Your date will not LOL, so put that thing away -- G2G!

Contingency Plans... There's no telling how a first date will go. Sometimes, smooth sailing. Sometimes, painful from beginning to end. Which is why humans invented emergency "outs." The problem is, contingency plans are way too obvious and offensive to your date. If you're concerned about how the date will go, don't have your "friend" call you with an "emergency" halfway through dinner, stick with something quick like coffee, snacks, or ice cream.

And Now for the Big Goodbye... If all goes well on a first date, you may end the outing with a little kiss. If you find yourself freaking out about it way before the date is even over, know that a hearty hug can send the same message. If you do go for the lips, make sure your mouth is minty fresh.
