A powerful storm system is forecast to unleash heavy rain, large hail, strong winds, and thunderstorms capable of spinning up tornadoes this week across much of the south-central United States.

This area was battered just last week by deadly storms. The low-pressure system invigorated by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico began a slow, multi-day journey from Texas to the Great Lakes region on Eclipse Monday (4/8/24).

As it headed east, severe weather was expected to hit the Gulf Coast, the mid-Atlantic, and the Midwest regions, the National Weather Service said.

The threatening forecast led organizers of The Texas Eclipse Festival to end the celebration early Monday and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to activate emergency response resources.

More than 30 million Americans from eastern Texas to Mississippi were at risk of severe weather Tuesday, when heavy rain, wind, "large hail," and several tornadoes were expected to lash the region, the storm prediction center said.

The highest risk of flooding was in the Texas Panhandle Tuesday night and the mid-South on Wednesday, the weather service said. More: More

A jaw-dropping video from Arkansas shows the moment a woman wound up being sucked out of a building while filming a tornado that swept directly over her while she was at the dentist's office [getting fake teeth or just a cleaning that stripped off all the enamel?].

The incredible footage was reportedly captured by Kimberly Shaw last Friday afternoon as she was visiting a dental office in the city of Little Rock, where Billy Clinton and his Bonnie used to ride roughshod.

Mesmerized by the sight of a powerful EF-3 tornado that had formed in the distance, she called her husband, Jimmy, into the building from the parking lot and began filming the unsettling scene with her cell phone.

Declaring "Oh, I'm gettin' this," a determined Shaw stood at the door of the dental office as the violent storm barreled towards her.

To Shaw's horror, when the twister reached the building, she noticed that its incredibly strong vacuum was opening the door of the office glass that was protecting her.

"The windows behind us blew out, and when it did, it sucked me out," she recalled, telling another local news outlet that "there was debris hitting me. It was flying over my head. That's all I could see was debris everywhere." Shaw credited her husband for saving her life as Jimmy "grabbed a hold of me and he pulled me back inside" in the building. More

(WQ) Montebello (Spanish, Italian, and/or some derivative of Latin for "Beautiful Mountain") is a semi-industrialized suburb in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, east of the main city center, just a few miles from DTLA and its world-famous skyline. Who would have imagined an Arctic blast, a Pineapple Express, relentless rains and floods, mudslides, hail, and record snow as spring begins in this dusty Mediterranean climate region which is not a desert? Los Angeles is a basin full of surprises, alpine regions and beaches, hills and meadows, and more asphalt and concrete than the mind can comfortably imagine. Now tornadoes, too? Angelenos have always had "rain spouts" out by the Santa Monica Bay that don't quite touch down but leave Venice Beach tourists in awe. Now with the great white sharks swimming under surfers in search of sea mammals, it's getting too dangerous to live in these parts. This tornado was the leading story on weather.com on the days it happened, as there seem to have been two that touched down.
