Los Angeles, World's Music Capital (webcast)

Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Seven, Pat Macpherson, Dev, Wisdom Quarterly; KROQ.com
Acoustic X-mas weekend, FREE WEBCAST, Dec. 7-8, 2013 beginning at 5:00 pm PST

Lost City of Angels rocks! (Occupy LA)
Living in Tinsel Town has its advantages. Among them is the variety of music concentrated into a smoggy basin girded by a mountain sign, golden coastline, and a smoggy desert expanse mostly covered by asphalt.

The intermittent heat makes artists half baked. As previously noted, America is like a box of cereal with its seams split, shaking out on both ends, littering coasts east and west with flakes, fruits, and nuts. Los Angeles has more than its share of nuts. And many of them occupy positions of influence in the music industry.

Miley Cyrus in L.A. twerked for the holidays
The monopolistic corporate media powers that be have assembled numerous mega-concerts for the holiday season: (CBS, Inc.) KROQ's alternative "Acoustic X-mas," KPWR (Power 106)'s hip hop/gangsta rap "Cali Christmas" (to be live streamed Dec. 14, 2013), Ryan Seacrest's pop/rap KISS FM's giant Jingle Ball. Who's playing? Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Robin Thicke, Selena Gomez... went on last night in an enormous downtown concert stadium.

But tonight and tomorrow, all for charity, KROQ will be live webcasting a more spectacular alt-rock-pop show featuring Lorde, Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Grouplove, The Neighbourhood, Queens of the Stone Age, AFI (A Fire Inside), Kings of Leon, New Politics, Fitz and the Tantrums, Portugal. Coachella 2013: Watch it live! (FREE)

Wisdom Quarterly; Ben Bergman, Alex Cohen, A. Martinez, "Take Two" (SCPR.org)
WATCH IT HERE LIVE FOR FREE

"Cultural juggernaut and cash cow" (the most profitable music festival in the world), punk-promoter Goldenvoice's COACHELLA starts Friday, April 12th for its 2013 two weekend run. Our fave rapper 2 Chainz will be on stage (without PSY) causing tens of thousands to bounce in unison along with more hipster vibes than the unaided consciousness can handle.

Not alone, not together: group meditation
When concert promoter Goldenvoice started the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 14 years ago, the event hemorrhaged money -- and Goldenvoice teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. At the same time, Coachella's hometown of Indio was prospering as the housing boom began to take off. But during the past few years, the fortunes of Indio and Coachella have gone in opposite directions -- and now Indio city leaders are tired of chopping budgets and are eager to capitalize on the music festival’s success. How to best do that has been the source of considerable debate. More

Buddhist Radio: Thursdays With Rory

Wisdom Quarterly supports "free speech radio" at Pacifica's KPFK.org
Tuesdays with Maury have now been replaced by midnight rendezvous with Roy "Rory" Tuckman, aka "Roy of Hollywood." This remarkable radio pioneer has kept British Zen Master Alan Watts' ordinary Dharma and everyday Zen alive for decades.

But that's not all his show, "Something's Happening," has done. He features hours of big name American Buddhist authors, teachers, and monastics. Pema Chodron, Shinzen Young, Sharon Salzberg, Robert Thurman, B. Alan Wallace, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, and lots of titles from the "Sounds True" catalogue. The show is not limited to American Buddhists, of course.

D.T. Suzuki, the Dalai Lama, Matthieu Ricard, and others appear. It is all heard overnight Thursday into Friday and a brief Sunday morning shot of Alan Watts at 8:30 am in Los Angeles 90.7 FM). Other nights (12:00 to 5:00 am) feature alternative health authority Dr. Gary Null and others. And it is all simulcast worldwide over the Web at KPFK.org and archived for free download or free listening for 90 days following airing at Archive.KPFK.org.

Why I love Cinco de Mayo
I love Cinco de Mayo. It is a quintessential American holiday. And by "American" I don’t mean that broader use standing for all of us who occupy the two continents bearing the name; I mean United Statesian. Yes, it is observed in parts of Mexico, but like with St Patrick’s Day it is more our holiday...

Cinco de BuHo
Wesleying.org "Cinco de BuHo"
John Ryan '14 writes in to keep your eardrums happy this Cinco de Mayo. This Saturday afternoon [May 5, 2012], Buddhist House is hosting a concert/BBQ backyard bash featuring bands that will certainly make the celebrations celebration-worthy. Not only is this a great way to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the French...
  • Cinco de Mayo in Boston
  • New York's Cinco de Mayo
  • Though not much celebrated in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that commemorates an 1862 victory of Mexico over France at the Battle of Puebla. In New York City, the recently hyped holiday commemorates the importation of inexpensive tequila to the United States....

The Buddhist Channel (TV, Web)

Chief: The Life and Work of K Sri Dhammnanda -- Buddhist Channel original film on Malaysia's most famous [Sri Lankan] monk, which premiered at WIFF.
Now Showing: Part 1. download; Part 2. download Part 3. download

Premasara Epasinghe, Pvt. Sec'y to the Minister of Education
(WQ, Daily News of Sri Lanka)

(Buddhist Channel TV) Television is powerful and popular. It was only introduced to Sri Lanka in 1979. Why is it powerful and popular? It communicates directly and simultaneously to every home. Television captures the entire family at the same time. So its impact is enormous.

Peaceful co-existence through Dharma
Television's audio-visual contents can be used for the betterment or detriment of society. Most TV channels in the world are interested in arousing the five senses.

There are many reports published in the West about social research on TV and violence. It is detrimental to society. Some Sri Lankan TV is not suitable for young minds.

Our TV Channels should give priority to presenting programs of aesthetic value, elevating artistic appreciation, showing what is good for the entire family and society at large. It should be educational.

Propagating Dharma
The Buddhist Channel is comprised of programs on the teachings of the Buddha. These educational programs are based on moral-virtue, calm-concentration, and mindful-wisdom (sila, samadhi, and prajna respectively).

The idea is to teach individually moral, publicly ethical, and timelessly spiritual values. The Channel's thinking and philosophy are to build an exemplary Buddhist society in Sri Lanka. It is also to create an excellent international image for the country. With this good intention in mind, the Buddhist Channel was started as the world’s first and only global Buddhist satellite television broadcasting network.

The Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, inaugurated it a year ago, stating: “One Poson Day more than 2,000 years ago, Arhat Mahinda Thera, son of the Great Indian Emperor Asoka, brought the message of the Buddha and Dharma to our island. Today using modern technology, we can send the Buddha’s message to the entire world.”

As the president stated, it is the "Gift of Dharma" that Sri Lanka is eminently qualified to send out to the world. The Buddha and Dharma illuminate the way. Humankind is thus able to cross from dark, hateful, deluded conflict and suffering into a new world of light filled with loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, and the peace and happiness that come from that.

This is to be achieved within the next few decades, making the Channel a catalyst for a "new world order" of righteousness.

A pious Hindu, the Tamil gentleman Muhundan Kanage, was the owner of CBN SAT TV Channel (Pvt) Ltd. When his company was acquired by Dialog Television (Pvt) Ltd, he insisted on having a Sri Lankan Buddhist Channel. He made arrangements with the new owners to allocate a Buddhist Channel in their package and donated the TV equipment he owned to Sambodhi Viharaya on Gregory’s Road in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

The Origin
Today, it is part of the religious programming of the Dialog Sat TV, which is a DTH service given to its subscribers free of charge like the other religious channels-Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. At the same time, the SLT Vision Com is also transmitting these Buddhist programs. The Buddhist channel is still in its infancy. It has not yet fully established in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans can view The Buddhist channel programs on TNL for a couple of hours commencing from 3:00 PM daily....

The mission has already been undertaken by the Ven. Shastrapathi Pandita Daranagama Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera with the help of a dynamic committee for the Sri Sambodhi Viharaya. Everything is already in motion to make the Buddhist Channel a terrestrial telecasting service.

Fascinating Full Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse is seen in Jiuquan, in China's western Gansu province Friday Aug. 1, 2008. Millions of Chinese along the ancient Silk Road gathered Friday to gaze at a total solar eclipse, an event traditionally fraught with superstitious meaning coming one week before the start of the Beijing Olympics (AP Photo).

Totality: solar eclipse, which the Chinese word for is "Rishi" meaning "eaten sun," can be seen above the Jiayuguan Fort on the Great Wall of China in the town of Jiayuguan, Gansu Province August 1, 2008 (David Gray/Reuters).

Solar Eclipse Friday to Fascinate Millions
Robert Roy Britt (SPACE.com) July 31, 2008

A total eclipse of the sun Friday should fascinate millions of lucky skywatchers in Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia and China, but be available to everyone through NASA, in partnership with the Exploratorium and the University of California, Berkeley, which will transmit live images on NASA TV.

If the weather cooperates, people along a narrow path who venture out and look up will see stars during the day as the sun is gradually devoured and ultimately blotted out by the moon. Unlike ancient times, when eclipses were viewed as bad omens in many cultures, fewer people should be expecting doom this time around. Still, myths persist, especially in remote regions, so it's likely there will be some banging on pots and other creative tactics employed to drive the "evil spirits" away.

Map showing path of solar eclipse which will cross China one week before the start of the Olympic Games (AFP/Graphic).

Billions of people along the path, including most of Europe and Asia, have a chance to see an interesting but much less foreboding partial eclipse. The northern half of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces will be graced with a partial eclipse at sunrise.

Myth and mystery Solar eclipses occur when the moon moves in front of the sun. This can happen only at the time of a new moon, when the moon is between Earth and the sun. When the three objects align perfectly an eclipse occurs. Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive. Many cultures thought a demon [asura] or dragon [naga] was devouring the sun.
.

In ancient China, "any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor," according to Sten Odenwald of the department of physics at Catholic University. An eclipse occurred in 2134 B.C., but was not predicted by Hsi and Ho, who were believed to have been two astrologers who served the Emperor Chung K'ang.

"By some accounts, the two astrologers were negligent in their duties and did not foretell the event for the Emperor," Odenwald writes in a historical article published by NASA. "They were summarily beheaded for their negligence of duty." The ancient Chinese banged pots and drums to shoo the frightful sun-eating character away, according to the Exploratorium Science Center in San Francisco. In India, people would immerse themselves in water to help the sun fight the dragon [naga-raja]. Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse.

Prior to a total solar eclipse in 2006, one Indian paper advised pregnant women not to go outside during the eclipse to avoid having a blind baby or one with a cleft lip. Food cooked before the eclipse was to be thrown out afterward because it would be impure and those who are holding a knife or ax during the eclipse would cut themselves, the Hindustan Times added.

In Togo, authorities prior to the 2006 solar eclipse called on villagers to stay home. "Please, do not go out and keep your children indoors on solar eclipse day,'' Togo's minister for health said in a message broadcast on state television.

Risk of eye injury
Eclipses can indeed be dangerous. Despite myths and rumors, a total solar eclipse is safe to watch during the darkness of totality, when no rays of the sun are passing to your eyes. The corona, or atmosphere of the sun, is often partly visible when the moon blocks out the main disk of the sun. Viewing the corona during totality also is safe.

However, looking directly at the sun, even during a partial eclipse, will damage your eyes unless you wear proper eye protection. It is extremely dangerous to eyesight to look directly at an eclipse at any stage expect during totality.

Glasses designed specifically for eclipse viewing are recommended, or a handful of indirect viewing methods can be used: With masking tape, cover all but a 1/2-inch square of a small mirror. Project the sun onto a shaded wall. Or with a pencil, poke a small hole in a piece of paper. Let sunlight fall trough the hole onto a second sheet of white paper about a foot below.

Webcast planned
For those not fortunate enough to be in the eclipse's narrow path, a live webcast is planned. The coverage, originating in China and reliant on good weather, runs from 6 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. ET. The period of total eclipse, or totality, will occur from 7:08 a.m. to 7:10 a.m. ET.
