Elections in Afghanistan take place this Saturday (April 5, 2014), with violence spiking strongly. On Friday, two journalists with the Associated Press were shot. One of them, the Pulitzer Prize-winning German photographer Anja Niedringhaus, was killed. The other is Kathy Gannon, author of the book I Is For Infidel, who is reportedly in stable condition.

[JSOC and the American military-industrial complex have left this ancient nation -- where Buddhism simultaneously began as the gateway between Asia and Europe -- safe and secure, bringing peace and freedom and now fair and transparent democratic elections, but somehow...]

Dozens of attacks in the past weeks throughout the country have created a tense atmosphere. On Wednesday a [brainwashed] suicide bomber killed six Afghan police officers in the capital Kabul, and a day before that a candidate running for election and nine of his supporters and staff were killed in a northern province. Among the candidates for president are a number of “warlords,” such as Abdul Rashid Dostum and Abdullah Abdullah. Afghan [Puppet-] President Hamid Karzai, who has presided over the country for nearly the entire time of the US occupation, has reached the limits of his tenure. Last December Karzai refused to sign an accord with the US over the status of US forces in Afghanistan, saying it would be more appropriate for his replacement to make the decision.

Nirvana as Living Experience

Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly; Prof. Lily de Silva, Nibbana As Living Experience, Buddhist Publication Society (Wheel No. 407/408); news inserts by CC Liu
Monastic robe, Songkhla, Thailand (Homam Alojail/flickr/Bird_beckham77/500px.com)

Prof. Lily de Silva approaches the age-old question "What is nirvana?" from a fresh angle: “What does the attainment mean in terms of the living experience of one who has reached the ultimate goal?” She discovers in the Pali texts four outstanding attributes of this experience. It is spiritual freedom to be experience here and now. In a second essay she examines the two types of individuals who have realized the ultimate goal, the Buddha and arhat disciples, distinguished by the breadth of knowledge but experiencing the same nirvana and liberation. She is Professor Emeritus of Pali and Buddhism at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and a frequent contributor to scholarly and popular journals as well as the editor of the Pali Text Society's "Long Discourses of the Buddha" (Digha Nikaya).

Nirvana is freedom for those who practice
Nirvana (Pali nibbana) is the culmination of the Buddhist quest for perfection and happiness.

In order to understand the meaning of this term it is useful to refer to the verse attributed to Kisa Gotami when she saw Prince Siddhartha returning to the palace from the park on the eve of his great renunciation.

She declared: Nibbuta nuna sa mata, nibbuto nuna so pita, Nibbuta nuna sa nari, yassayam Idiso pati [Note 1]. “Happy (contented/peaceful), indeed, is the mother (who has such a son); happy, indeed, is the father (who has such a son); happy, indeed, is the woman who has such a one as her husband.”

LA: Can adults learn to ride bikes?
Nibbuta (from nir + v) is often treated as the past participle of the verb nibbayati, and nibbana is the nominal form of that verb.

It means happiness, contentment, and peace. Nibbayati also means to extinguish, to blow out -- metaphorically, as in the blowing out of a lamp [2]. Nirvana is so called because it is the blowing out of the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion [3].

When these metaphorical fires are blown out, peace is attained. One becomes completely cooled (sitibhuta) [4].

It is sometimes conjectured that nirvana is called "cool" because the Buddha preached in a hot and humid country, where cool was appreciated as being much more comfortable. Had he taught in a cold and bitter climate, nirvana might have been described in terms of warmth.

Staff members study networking at the training room of the Huawei Technologies Co. headquarters in Shenzhen, China, in June 2011.
Chinese cyberthreat, US launches attack
But it is certain that the term “cool” was chosen to convey a literal psychological reality [5]. Anger makes us hot and restless. We use expressions such as “boiling with anger,” clearly expressing the intensity of aggressive emotion.

When such negative emotions are completely uprooted never to arise again, one's temperament must be described as cool. Nirvana is a state to be attained here and now in this very life [6] not a state to be attained after death.

In terms of living experience, nirvana can be characterized by four special attributes:
  1. happiness
  2. perfection of virtue
  3. realization
  4. freedom.
Happiness
CancelColbert
Looking at these one by one, nirvana is described as the highest happiness, the supreme state of bliss [7]. Those who have attained nirvana live in utter bliss, free from hatred and mental illness among those who are hateful and mentally ill [8].

Sukha in Pali, being the opposite of dukkha (disappointment, suffering, unsatisfactoriness) denotes both happiness and pleasure. In English, happiness denotes more a sense of mental ease and well being, whereas pleasure denotes physical excitement (pleasant agitation, arousal).

The Pali word sukha extends to both these aspects, and it is [2] certain (as shown below) that mental and physical bliss is experienced by one experiencing nirvana. The experience of supersensual yet physical bliss for limited periods is possible even before the attainment of nirvana through the practice of the meditative absorption (jhana, samadhi).

First Person Luke Quezada
The "Fruits of Recluseship" discourse (Samaññaphala Sutta) describes these physical experiences with the help of eloquent similes [9]. When bath powder and water are kneaded into a neat wet ball, the moisture touches every part of the ball but does not ooze out. Similarly, the body of the adept in the first absorption is suffused and drenched with joy and pleasure born of detachment from sense pleasures (viveka-jam piti-sukham).

The experience in the second absorption is also elucidated: When a deep pool is filled to the brim with clear cool water fed by underground springs, its waters do not overflow, and no part of the pool remains untouched by the cool. Similarly, joy and pleasure born of concentration in the second absorption pervade the body of the meditator.

Benghazi
Former CIA official: No Benghazi politics
The simile for the third absorption is that of a lotus born in water, grown up in water, fully submerged in water, drawing nourishment from water, with no part of it remaining untouched by water. In the same way, happiness/pleasure permeates, suffuses, and drenches the entire body of the adept in the third absorption.

These are the experiences of supersensual pleasure even before the attainment of nirvana. On attainment, more refined supersensual pleasure is permanently established. The "Discourse to Chunky" (Canki Sutta) specifically states that when a monastic realizes the ultimate truth, one experiences that truth “with the body” [10].

Regarding the experience of the arhat, the oldest discourses (Sutta Nipata) state that by the undoing of all feelings/sensations [through insight], one lives desireless and at peace [11].

Annabelle Gurwitch
I see you made an effort (Gurwitch)
Once Sariputra, the Buddha's chief male disciple foremost in wisdom (counterpart to the nun Khema), was asked what happiness there can be when there is no feeling/sensation [12]. He explained that the absence of feeling/sensation itself is happiness (contentment/peace/ease) [13].

It is relevant to note here that the Buddha states that he does not speak of happiness only with reference to pleasant feelings/sensations. Wherever there is happiness and pleasure, he recognizes that as happiness and pleasure [14]. More

Is USAID the new CIA? Another Twitter (video)

USAID, the new CIA?
How America (under its secret-government as the US Military-Industrial Complex) runs the world: By co-creating Facebook, Google, Twitter -- and/or coopting them after someone else creates them -- CIA agents and operatives (as well as the FBI, black-budget Pentagon, DARPA, DHS, the Secret Service, and of course the NSA) foment and agitate for civil war, "revolution," and liberation.

They're doing what to my America?!
But the goal is not actual freedom and democracy for people in the US or elsewhere, it is to topple uncooperative governments without overtly sending in soldiers. Secret operatives do a quieter, and therefore better, job by avoiding all the sticky accusations of "imperialism," "war crimes," and "illegal intervention."

The CIA learned its lessons well in Vietnam, the Philippines, Egypt (Arab Spring), Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Central America, Kosovo, Grenada, Cambodia, Laos, Tibet/China... It's been all over the world.

It rules the world by subterfuge and deceit, raking in billions in drug dealing, market manipulations, and international banking. Ask the author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman for the details of how we loan money to nations (Hello, Ukraine!) through the World Bank and IMF then send in jackals to call the shots making those nations very friendly to the West. What choice will they have when we assassinate their leaders who are for the people and prop up new politicians corrupt enough to do whatever America asks of them?

Senator: Billionaires now "buy elections"
Now we clearly see that USAID, following the playbook, created a Twitter for Cuba. A hummingbird whispers via mobile phones and cell networks, and a government comes down with flash mobs, "Occupy" style events, protests, demonstrations, disruptions, Anarchist Bible (written by the CIA) vandalism, general hooliganism and drug use (brought in by the fine Company folks who work with the authorities who will arresting the buyers and sellers but never the distributors)...

AP reports a complex and intricate strategy devised by the U.S. gov't to artificially foment political dissent in Cuba and spur a "democratic" uprising -- rigged by the CIA -- using a fake social media platform. It's the Latin Twitter ZunZumeo (vator.tv)

"U.S. Secretly Created 'Cuban Twitter' to Stir Unrest" is the name of an explosive new article by the Associated Press detailing how the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) created a fake Twitter program to undermine the Cuban government.

The CIA has many guises and operatives
[As Americans, we have the real Twitter spying on us and undermining actual dissent while seeming to stir up all sorts of trouble by facilitating peer-to-peer conversations that are thoroughly documented and used for later investigations and to set people up.]

The communications network was called "ZunZuneo" -- slang for a Cuban hummingbird’s tweet. It was reportedly built with secret shell companies financed through [CIA-controlled] foreign banks. According to the AP, the United States [the MIC] planned to use the platform to spread political content that might trigger a Cuban Spring.

Or it might, as one USAID document put it, "renegotiate the balance of power between the state and society." JADOO: Set in Leicester [Lester], England, Amit Gupta’s delicious and delightful comedy charts the chaos that ensues when young Shalini gets engaged to her longtime boyfriend Mark. The fact that Mark is not Indian is the least of Shalini’s concerns. Her father Raja and uncle Jagi have been at war for years. After a big falling out that caused them to close their family restaurant, each man opened his own establishment -- directly across the street from each other!

Shalini’s dream wedding would see both men put aside their differences and prepare the wedding feast together. But resentment runs deep, and neither man can so much as hear mention of the other’s name without a spike in blood pressure. The prospect of disappointing their beloved Shalini -- and the threat of a new, hip restaurant opening in the area -- forces Raja and Jagi to work together, but for how long? In this uproariously funny and heartfelt exploration of family bonds, shared history, and culinary perfection, Gupta’s cast is relentlessly charming. Ask the Sexpert (audio)

Twitter user @AshleighEarley participates in the The Sun's Check'em Tuesday campaign.
Should I be touching my own breasts?
A retired doctor has become a popular figure in India after answering hundreds of questions a week about sex.

Dr. Mahinder Watsa, 90, gives males and females of all ages the chance to get answers to personal questions with his column in a popular Indian tabloid newspaper.

He practiced for many years as a gynaecologist and trained as a sex therapist in the United States. He first became an advice columnist for an Indian women’s magazine and then in 2005 began writing for Bombay's Mumbai Mirror.

Since then he’s answered tens of thousands of questions.

He doesn't need to know, and he'll still be happy
"People ask me, 'Are you making up the questions?' because some of them are really weird," says Dr. Watsa. "And I said, 'No, I don't. What comes in, I answer" [which is mostly about masturbation, rumors, naive ponderings, embarrassment, and unknown consequences].

The things people ask about range from questions around the practicalities of sex to issues around sexuality as well as relationships and physical looks.

Wait, Indians masturbate to my pornos?
It has caused some controversy in a country that still struggles with prudish attitudes towards sex, but Dr. Watsa’s no-nonsense approach and sense of humor have garnered him quite a following among readers of the paper and online.

"The column I think is popular because there are very few people who really attend to this area of their physiology or of their bodies," he adds.

He often finds himself dealing with myths and old wives tales about sex as well as questions relating specifically to the Indian way of life around things like arranged marriages [and the need for virginity or the appearance of it].

Dr. Watsa says people are becoming more open about sex, but the dissemination of information in India can be a barrier.

http://www.mumbaimirror.com/columns/ask-the-sexpert
"Unfortunately, sex became a very political subject about four or five years ago, and suddenly there was a lot of hubbub about it, as a result of which sex education was banned in the schools, almost in all states in the country," says Dr. Watsa.

Don't think about sex, don't think about sex
At one time most of the questions that came in were from men, but more and more women are now writing to him.

"They talk about their breasts being small or big, or one recently thought her buttocks were very large," he says.

Many women get worried that their husband looking at porn means they’re not interested in sex with them.

Prefer the "good ol' days" of colonialism?
"The women are becoming more open and asking how to deal with these problems," he adds. India’s own "Dr. Ruth" answers questions that come in daily. And even though he’s just turned 90 he shows no sign of retiring.

"I tell people my head and feet are working and all the other parts are in order, so I suppose I will go on," he says. More
