The Buddha's practice before enlightenment

(Buddhist Insights) In this sutra (discourse) the Buddha describes a practice he did prior to attaining enlightenment:

I was just dividing my thoughts, Sujata.
He divided all his thoughts into two separate categories and evaluated the results that each category of thought had on his mind -- a practice that is similarly of benefit to any ordinary unenlightened being who wishes to purify his or her mind today.

He then moves on to explain what he did subsequently to bring his practice to fulfillment, to the aspiration of enlightenment in this very life. The text of the discourse can be found here: bhantesuddhaso.com.
