Griffith Park Observatory: Conjunction (12/22)

Watch the Great Conjunction
(Griffith Park Observatory, Hollywood, Webcast Live) On Monday, December 21, 2020, starting at 4:30 pm, the winter solstice, the planets Jupiter and Saturn will appear in the evening sky very close to each other, at about one-fifth of the Moon's diameter apart.

This close approach of the two planets is called a "great conjunction" and occurs when the independent movements of Jupiter and Saturn make them appear close together in the sky. This happens once every 20 years, but they have not been seen this close together since 1226 A.D. More

Astrology: The Great Conjunction (video)

The Great Conjunction is a rare and special astrological event that happens every 20 years or so. It involves the meeting of Jupiter and Saturn at the same degree of the zodiac.

For the last 200 years, the Great Conjunction has occurred almost always in earth signs, but now, on December 21st, 2020, both Jupiter and Saturn will align in the air sign of Aquarius.

As Jupiter and Saturn align in Aquarius, it is going to kickstart a new era. It is also going to usher us deeper into the Age of Aquarius.

Hippies from the musical "Hair," which inspired the "40 Year Old Virgin"

I'm not arguing. I'm an intuitive, and I am right.
There is much debate on when the Age of Aquarius actually begins. Some astrologers believe it has already started; others believe we are still hundreds of years from it.

Regardless of when the Age of Aquarius officially begins, it seems that this Great Conjunction falling in Aquarius is a sign that we are about to see many Age of Aquarius themes unfold.

It is believed that the Jupiter-Saturn alignment will color and shape the decades to come.

For the last 200 years, as Jupiter and Saturn have been coming together in earth signs, they have shaped and defined the world we currently live in.

Earth energy is very tangible. It is all about building things, creating foundations, using the resources of the Earth, and focusing on material possessions.

Author: Tanazz Chubb
Under Earth energy we have achieved a lot, but the time has come for a shift back into balance. We need to move away from material possessions, from [corporations] robbing the Earth of its resources, and away from creating the tangible to manifesting the intangible.

And that is where the air energy of Aquarius comes into play. Aquarius energy is revolutionary... More

*A "great conjunction" is a conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn, when the two planets appear closest together in the sky. Great conjunctions, named "great" for being the rarest and one of the brightest and closest on average of the conjunctions between "naked eye" planets (not counting the rarer conjunctions involving the ice giants that were too dim to be discovered until after the invention of the telescope), occur approximately every 20 years when Jupiter "overtakes" Saturn in its orbit.

"Great" Conjunction? So what? Who cares?

Know what grinds my gears? Space stuff!
My girlfriend is so [silly]! She thinks we're all about to zap out of existence only to reappear on some celestial plane in the Deva World. Why? The Great Conjunction of course! She and her [hippie] friends talk like that, and it [really grinds my gears]. Stare at the moon, Moonchildren, to be moonstruck. But keep your feet on the ground.

The Old World ruined the New World.
It's like that Harmonic Convergence that came to nothing. Then there was that time when 2012 rolled around and just kept going. The Maya never said the world would end, just that their great calendar would reset. Not the Aztec Calendar; that's different.

Mexico (Mesoamerica) has given us many great civilizations (not to be confused with the colonial mess left behind by invading Europeans from Spain and Portugal 500 years ago).

This will happen again in another 20 years, so big deal! Rube and Co. will drive to Joshua Tree to see the space spectacle after the sun sets (5:30 pm) by a fire. They'll chill and set up telescopes and be back in L.A. before midnight. How woo-woo can you get?

So what? Who cares? Only the strong survive

How to be a good human

Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven (eds.) based on Ven. Nyanatiloka (Anton Gueth), Wisdom Quarterly

Ma, why does everyone hate you? - Jealousy.
What does it mean to be "good" on the human plane or manussya loka?

The Buddha defined it as the wholesome karma that led us to rebirth here in the first place. A higher morality or virtue (sila) leads by the lawfulness of karma (deeds) to other states and traits.

What led to my rebirth here? It is only possible to be reborn on this plane by virtue of having accrued good karma in the form of maintaining one or more of the Five Precepts, which means abstaining from:
  1. taking the lives of living beings
  2. taking what is not given
  3. taking sexual liberties (with ten types)
  4. taking liberties with the truth
  5. taking intoxicants that occasion heedlessness.
These may sound like negative acts, but in fact they are broadly worded categories. It is easy to put them in positive terms, though in doing so they seem to lose some of their breadth.
  1. preserving the lives of living beings
  2. letting go instead of greedily clinging
  3. respecting others' relationships
  4. being truthful (kind honesty)
  5. being sober (to preserve these five).
Virtue is a mode of mind (heart), particularly that of volition, underlying motivation, or intention (cetana) manifested in thought, speech, and bodily action. (See karma).

Virtue is the whole foundation of Buddhist practice. It is the first of the Three Kinds of Training (sikkhā) that form the threefold division of the ennobling Eightfold Path, namely morality, concentration (coherence of mind), and wisdom.

Buddhist morality is not negative, as it may appear from the negative formulations in the sutras. It is quite positive. For it does not consist of merely refraining from committing harmful actions. Rather, in each instance, it is the clearly conscious and intentional restraint from doing harm (bad karma).

Whatever the action in question, restraint corresponds to a simultaneously arising volition (mind moment or citta). The ennobling virtue of the Path or magga is eightfold.

The karma of animals leads to rebirth as one.
Right speech, right action, and right livelihood are together called "genuine or natural morality" (pakati-sīla), as distinguished from the external rules taken on by monastics, lay meditators, and ordinary people wishing to improve themselves, or so-called "prescribed morality" (paññatti-sīla), which, as such, is karmically neutral.

The Buddha asked, "What now is karmically wholesome morality (kusala-sīla)?"

He answered, "It is wholesome bodily action (kāya-karma), wholesome verbal action (vacī-karma), and purity with regard to livelihood I call 'morality'" (MN 78). Compare at magga, 3-5. More

World Meditation: Solstice Great Conjunction

[Gaia Meditation, LIVE Dec. 21, 2020] 🙏🌍 This is a worldwide meditation. Lightworkers from all around the world are welcome to join this mass meditation. It is guided by 🗣️ Stéphane Clément.

Jupiter and Saturn will align so closely in the night sky, which is very rare, that they'll create a radiant point of light some are calling the "Solstice Star," the fabled "Star of Bethlehem," or the "Christmas Star." The event is officially referred to as "The Great Conjunction," marking our entrance into the Age of Aquarius. It's a specious claim to some and to others and obvious event that has been happening for a while now. Look around. This is what transition looks like. The cosmic conjunction occurs roughly every 20 years. But this is the closest these planets will line up in our night sky since the Middle Ages.

🕒 Monday, December 21st, 2020 at 7:00 pm UTC+1 (Paris time). The live guided meditation starts in Los Angeles at 10:00 am, New York at 1:00 pm, London at 6:00 pm, Paris at 7:00 pm, Tel Aviv 8:00 pm, New Delhi at 11:30 pm, and at Tokyo 3:00 am

  • 🌍 Let's embrace energies of the New Earth in our hearts and manifest a new paradigm together.
For as Gandhi said, [Let's] "be the change [we] wish to see in the world." This means that if we change our own vibration, we’re going to change our perception of reality and therefore we’re going to see it manifest in the physical world.

Today we’re observing that out of the "chaos" something orderly is emerging, a new vibration, a new energy. People are being forced to look inside instead of outside. LOVE is overtaking fear. The new paradigm emerging is being referred to as the "New Earth," like Eckhart Tolle was hinting at. The intentions for this guided meditation are to:
  • Embrace the energies of the New Earth in our hearts.
  • Be love and peace in our hearts so that they’ll manifest in the reality we experience.
  • Connect to everybody with the same intention, whether they engage in this meditation live or later or take up another meditation style, and so.
  • Connect to people with the same intention to raise the collective frequency of the planet.
  • The intention of thousands and millions of people is to connect together to amplify individual intention and speed up the collective shift into the new paradigm.
Remember, our spirit (breath, prana, chi, spiritus, lifeforce energy) exists beyond space and time. At a quantum level, there’s only this eternal present moment. Past, present, and future co-exist simultaneously. So if we make our intention to connect with people with the same intention, the same vibration as ours, we’ll instantaneously be connected, whether we do this meditation live or later.

NASA's fake (CGI) space program from the perspective of 4,000 miles above earth while actually just 20 or 50 miles up, barely in "space" as vaguely defined, with no way to see this kind of curvature of the planet purported to be the size we are told earth is by NASA. But no one questions it, and we believe whatever we see as if Hollywood propaganda did more to sell us our worldview than sanitized textbooks in school.

Scientific American: Can Buddhism save us?

John Horgan (Scientific American, 8/24/17); Pat Macpherson, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
A golden Theravada Buddhist statue of the Buddha (Prowpatareeya Tan/Pixabay)
.
A cool book argues that meditation can benefit us individually and globally.

I’m a friend and fan of mega-pundit Robert Wright. We’re obsessed with the same ridiculously big questions:
  • What is the meaning of life?
  • Does God exist?
  • What is human nature?
  • How constrained are we by our biology?
  • What hope is there for us?
In The Moral Animal, Nonzero and The Evolution of God, Wright explores these riddles with such crisp, assured intelligence that it’s hard figuring out where he goes wrong. But I try to rise to the challenge.

Why Buddhism is True
Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment
, which hit the bestseller lists, is Wright’s most ambitious book.

Guided by evolutionary psychology (his intellectual lodestar) and Buddhism, he diagnoses humanity’s ills and prescribes a treatment:

We are prone to excessive emotions, like desire, fear, and anger -- and to self-deception, which were instilled in us by natural selection.

But we can overcome these harmful tendencies through meditation, which helps us gain insight into and control over ourselves.

As Wright says in a Wall Street Journal essay, “The Meditation Cure,” meditation “turns out to be one of the best ways to deal with the anxieties and appetites bequeathed to us by our evolutionary history.” More

Basketball with Metta World Peace (video)

Trudy Goodman-Kornfield (insightla.org); Amber Larson, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

I'd call Metta World Peace [formerly Ron Sandiford-Artest] a real "alchemist," except there was nothing magical about the hard work he did to transform his troubles into triumphs with the help of therapy,  Buddhist meditation, and yoga.

He stepped out of where he came from into where he wanted to go without abandoning his roots or friends. Metta learned how to harness the energies that serve his goals, but he had to struggle to work through the emotions.

How he found the courage to believe in himself and use his experience to help others is a compelling story, one that is ultimately about love – Buddhist metta or "lovingkindess."

I have transcribed and edited the following words from a meditation video Metta made with WE RISE in May, 2020:

Metta World Peace, #37
“When I was a younger kid, emotions would get the best of me, and didn’t have the tools to understand how to deal with the emotions. When a controversy is about to happen, How do you ‘take five’ to make a good decision? On the basketball court, if you let your emotions get the best of you, you’re not going to be focused on the task at hand. I started to really take on meditation, therapy, yoga, and other holistic approaches so I could always be relaxed and calm… Meditation is very important, and all these tools were essential for me having a successful NBA career. In 2011, I changed my name to Metta World Peace. My name is inspired by Buddhism, by people being supportive of me and walking with me down this path of trying to find myself.

Ron Artest wasn't always about love (metta) or peace: fights, cheap shots...

Man, I have changed so much.
“I wanted to reach back and be part of something that I was as a child, in the purest form. Metta (‘lovingkindness’) was something I really wanted to accomplish, the same way you have goals on the court…. I’m very proud that I had the opportunity to have the exposure to meditation, therapy, yoga, and my singing bowl… If more people had these tools, when something is going wrong, there’s something you can fall back on if you’re feeling depressed or you have a lot of anxiety… meditation and yoga I really love. I still meditate. I talk with my therapist to this day when I need to. Metta World Peace is a place for me to go when I feel my emotions are getting the best of me. Meditate, soak it in, stay in the moment, stay present.”

Giving Grief Meaning (Dulan)
It was a joy to welcome this professional basketball player and inspiration to InsightLA’s annual benefit, a day of Buddhist teachings and practices to see us through hard times and happy holidays. I had the honor of speaking with Metta and friend Lily Dulan, who is launching her new book, Giving Grief Meaning.

Lily and Metta each discovered their own way to transform loss and grief into compassion and peace. Both Metta and Lily embody Hamlet’s wisdom: “To thine own self be true.” With a bit of metta and mindfulness, we can, too!

Walking Stick Yoga, Los Angeles hike (12/19)

The stick or danda is for effort and ease.
Dr. Lori Marsh is coming out with a new little book with instillmindfulness.org on the East Coast called Walking Stick Yoga -- using hiking poles to hike and get into a series of yoga poses.

Dharma Buddhist Meditation will hike to the beautiful Los Angeles mystery that is the Bridge to Nowhere, do yoga, meditate, snack, and break the ice-olation.

Where is Los Angeles' Bridge to Nowhere?
Need a cool pair of hiking poles? We recommend some from montemlife.com/ref/instill, but any will do, even sturdy sticks along the path.

Social distancing, fun masks, no kissing, and bring a water bottle. The hike is fairly easy but runs along a river, and we may see some rams, trout, and deer. Carpool, due to limited parking at trailhead, and make sure to get confirmation of your spot. Space is limited!
Walking Stick Yoga edited by Seven
Walking Stick Yoga: Danda Pada
Whether you have a regular practice or this is your first inquiry into yoga, by reading this book you have the potential to embark on a new lifestyle habit.

Yoga postures should be stable, held for an extended period, and share the twin qualities of effort and effortlessness – initial striving followed by relaxing into them.

Using poles in practice allows us to bring these positive qualities into each posture. Balance is immediately present, and the ease that results allows us to relax. Proceeds benefit InStill Mindfulness Studio.

Refusing toxic vaccine like the NYFD (video)

It's easy to ignore the propaganda and the alarmist news. Anyone can see there's no great epidemic of a transmissible disease. But watch the mainstream media news, and the propaganda says the sky is falling. Driven by fear, alarm, and terror, people will do anything, agree to anything: indefinite detention, the Patriot Act to lose all civil rights, shoving heavy metals and toxic substances into their arms so they won't catch the flu (even though they catch it anyway because it's never the right strain by design), and now a double dose of BS? No way. It's better to go with the NYFD. What do they know?

Tibetan prayer flags over Los Angeles

Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
If only there were a group of Buddhist meditators that liked to hike, too (DBM/Pinterest).

They're cool because they're mystical.
Vajrayana, Himalayan (Nepalese, Bhutanese, Northern Indian), or Tibetan Buddhist flags are all the rage in North America.

One can hardly step anywhere outdoors without running into them.

As avid hikers around Los Angeles, we like to leave them flapping in the wind, sending prayerful wishes for enlightenment, peace, and kindness to all who wander by.

Mountain pass yakshas love colorful flags.
"Not all who wander are lost," particularly if they hike the peaks behind L.A.

But these flags are not free, and they're not as easy to make as one might imagine, unless there's a silkscreen machine laying around.

Some gauzy cloth, some India ink, and a penchant for Sanskrit in Tibetan or Nepalese script helps. But we found some on Amazon and now buy them by the box full.

They're all around the yard and treehouse. The one by the door always get a comment, like a psychedelic tie-dye tee-shirt would if it were half well done.

Jackfruit: "vegan sensation" saves Sri Lanka

Zinara Rathnayake, BBC Travel, Asia, 9/17/20; Dhr. Seven, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Green jackfruit has a shredded meat texture that resembles pulled pork (Nathan Mahendra).
.
Ripe is too sweet. Eat it green (Sahid Laskar).
Sri Lanka began planting jackfruit trees to gain food self-sufficiency under British rule.

The fruit has since helped the once mostly vegetarian islanders of this majority Buddhist land avoid starvation.

My mother grew up in a house of eight in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, 100 km northeast of the capital, Colombo.

Jackfruit is the world's largest tree-borne fruit (BBC Travel/Utopia_88/Getty Images).
.
Mature the fruit can weigh 55kg (Getty).
During the island’s severe droughts in the 1970s, most of her family’s humble, home cooked meals consisted of green jackfruit served in a clay pot with freshly grated coconut [over rice].

This simple, carb-rich meal infused with healthy, natural lipids fueled them with enough energy for the farmer-family to toil day and night on the dry plains.

Today, Starbucks serves vegan jackfruit wraps, while Pizza Hut now offers it as a topping. The London Evening Standard called jackfruit “the new kimchi, kale, and cauliflower all rolled into one.”

Jackfruit in a variety of dishes (N. Mahendra)
PHOTOSPinterest named it “the hottest food trend of 2017” and, more recently, The Guardian declared the unripe or green version of it “a vegan sensation” thanks to its shredded meat texture.

[It becomes soft, yellow, cloyingly sweet, and unrecognizable as it ripens. In other words, it goes from vegetable to fruit as it matures, so get it green. Now available canned at Trader Joe's and most Asian markets.]

But for my mother, her memories of growing up are studded with her eldest sister’s myriad jackfruit dishes. She’s particularly fond of kiri kos, a creamy jackfruit curry cooked in coconut milk. For kiri kos, my aunt plucked unripe jackfruit. More

The Origin and Meaning of the Buddhist Flag

BuddhistCouncilofQueensland.org; Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Origin of the Buddhist Flag
The universal Buddhist flag, first hoisted in 1885 in Sri Lanka, is a symbol of confidence and peace used throughout the world to represent Buddhism.

There appears to have been a controversy over who designed the Buddhist flag.

American Colonel Henry Steele Olcott
Some give the credit to U.S. Colonel Henry Steele Olcott, a retired American Army colonel in Sri Lanka in May 1880.

Col. Olcott embraced Theravada Buddhism and joined the Buddhist Revivalist Movement and pioneered Buddhist education. He initiated the establishment of almost 400 Buddhist schools and colleges in Sri Lanka.

Ananda, Nalanda, Mahinda, and Dharmaraja stand as monuments to his pioneering efforts.

In 1884, Buddhists succeeded in getting Sri Lanka's British rulers to declare Vesak Day [the thrice blessed day commemorating the historical Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing into final nirvana] a public holiday beginning in May 1885.

At this stage Buddhists established the "Colombo Committee," and Col. Olcott was one of its members, but there were also more than ten other eminent members, both Sri Lankan laypersons and monks.

The committee set about the task of creating a Buddhist flag to be hoisted on the full moon day of Vesak, May 28th 1885, the day declared a public holiday, for the first time.

So it was this committee that jointly designed and approved the Buddhist flag. The secretary of the committee then presented it to the public on April 17th 1885.

Ven. Gunananda of Sri Lanka
The Buddhist flag it designed was indeed hoisted for the first time on Vesak in 1885 by Ven. Gunananda Thera at Dipaduttaramaya monastery in Kotahena.

On the suggestion of Col. Olcott, the flag was modified to be the size of other national flags. The Buddhist flag was then hoisted on Vesak in 1886 and remains unchanged to this day and is used by all Buddhist traditions and schools throughout the world.

Professor G. P. Malalasekera was instrumental in making it the flag of the Buddhist world. He proposed -- at the meeting of the World Federation of Buddhists held in Kandy, Sri Lanka on May 25th 1950 -- that it be accepted as Buddhism's official flag.

It was accepted as the "international Buddhist flag" by the 1952 World Buddhist Congress.

Meaning of the colors of the Buddhist flag
Some variations of the flag have since evolved even in the original (scarlet to orange).
.
The original design's six colors were
  1. blue (nila)
  2. yellow (pita)
  3. red (lohita)
  4. white (odata)
  5. scarlet (manjestha), and
  6. the mixture of these six (prabaswara).
They represent the colors of the aura that emanated from the Buddha's body when he attained the great awakening or enlightenment (maha bodhi) under the bodhi tree.

The original color of scarlet was subsequently altered to monastic orange (representing the original saffron robes of wandering ascetics).

The horizontal stripes represent the races of the world living in harmony, and the vertical stripes represent eternal world peace.

The colors symbolize the perfection of buddhahood and the Dharma.

The Buddha's aura

The Buddha had a bright aura since awakening.

The blue light that radiated from the Buddha's hair symbolizes the spirit of universal compassion for all beings.

The yellow light that radiated from the Buddha's skin symbolizes the Middle Way which avoids all extremes and brings balance and liberation.

The red light that radiated from the Buddha's flesh symbolizes the blessings that the practice of the Buddha's Teaching or Dharma brings.

The white light that radiated from the Buddha's bones (and teeth) symbolizes the purity of the Buddha's Teaching and the liberation it brings.

The orange light that radiated from the Buddha's palms, heels, and lips symbolizes the unshakable wisdom of the Buddha's Teaching.

The combination of colors symbolizes the universality of the Truth of the Buddha's Teaching.

Therefore, the overall flag represents that -- regardless of race, nationality, ethnic division, or skin color -- all sentient beings possess the potential for awakening and buddhahood.

There is a more contemporary, more modern definition of the six colors:

  1. Blue signifies the concept of loving kindness and peace in Buddhism.
  2. Yellow signifies the Middle Path, the complete absence of form, and emptiness.
  3. Red signifies achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune, and dignity.
  4. White signifies purity, emancipation, and that the Dharma [the Truth, although it may not be known] will always exist regardless of time or space.
  5. Orange signifies the essence of Buddhism, which is full of wisdom, strength, and dignity.
  6. The combination of these five colors symbolizes the one and only Truth. More
