Navanetham Pillay (Tamil நவநீதம் பிள்ளை, née Naidoo, Sept. 23, 1941) is a South African jurist who served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

She is of Tamil origin and was the first non-white female judge of the High Court of South Africa.

She has also served as a judge of the International Criminal Court and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

Pillay was born and raised in Durban, where she later attended the University of Natal, receiving her BA in 1963 and her Bachelor of Laws in 1965. After university, Pillay pursued a career as an attorney, joining the legal defense against apartheid.

In 1967, Pillay started her own law firm and became the first woman to do so in her home province of Natal.

In 1981, Pillay attended Harvard U and earned her Master of Law.

In 1988, she completed her thesis and graduated from Harvard Law School with a Doctorate of Juridical Science.

Pillay was nominated and confirmed to the High Court of South Africa by the Judicial Service Commission under supervision of the bar association in 1995.

In 1995, President Nelson Mandela [or a Mandela Effect replacement stand in] and Justice Minister Dullah Omar nominated Dr. Pillay to the UN Security Council for a judgeship on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

In 2013, Pillay criticized the nominally Buddhist Sri Lankan government for being an authoritarian state [53].

She alleged egregious human rights violations and atrocities committed by that nationalist (Sinhalese) government against Hindu Tamil minority civilians at the end of Asia's longest-running civil war, namely, the Sri Lankan Civil War. This led to that the government and its supporters to retaliate by saying her own Tamil descent was the only reason for her criticism, a claim she strongly denies [54].

Do I really need any underwear?
No Bra Day is an annual observance on October 13th when women are encouraged to go braless as a means to encourage breast cancer awareness.

No Bra Day was initially observed on July 9, 2011, but within three years it had moved to the 13th day of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.

Users on social media are encouraged to post using the hashtag #nobraday to promote awareness of breast cancer symptoms and to encourage gender equality.

Some users on social media sites also encourage women to post pictures of themselves not wearing a bra.

Some women embrace No Bra Day as a political statement, whereas others prefer the comfort of discarding what they view as a restrictive, uncomfortable garment.

The observance has spread worldwide. The event was spun off a medical event in Toronto, Canada, that encourages breast cancer survivors to consider reconstructive surgery.

First held on October 19th, 2011, the medical event was named BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day. It was adapted by an anonymous individual who conceived of No Bra Day as a way to encourage women to enjoy being braless and to become knowledgeable about breast cancer symptoms.

Hardcore punk making a comeback? (SNL)

Turnstile started as a hardcore punk rock group. Their breakthrough third album Glow On was released in 2021, earning critical acclaim and three Grammy nominations. The band has expanded and now just calls itself "an American rock band" from Baltimore (Maryland) that formed in 2010. Turnstile consists of lead vocalist Brendan Yates, guitarist Pat McCrory, guitarist Meg Mills, bassist Franz Lyons, and drummer Daniel Fang. Their fourth album Never Enough was released in 2025 and charted in the Top 10 of five countries, including the USA. It received five Grammy nominations, making it the first band in history to be nominated in the rock, alternative, and metal categories in the same year [2]. Turnstile won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their song "Birds" and Best Rock Album 2026. More

What is "hardcore punk"?

Commonly abbreviated to hardcore or hXc, this subgenre of punk rock with its distinct subculture originated in the late 1970s. It is generally harder, faster, and more aggressive than other forms of punk music [8].

Los Angeles may be famous for hXc, but LA certainly didn't invent it singlehandedly. Its roots can be traced to other crosspollinating punk scenes in Northern California like the San Francisco Bay Area and the SoCal region, including Orange County, Hollywood, and outlying parts of the sprawling megalopolis of the City of Lost Angels.

The Story of Hardcore Punk Rock 🧷

Hardcore punk arose as a reaction against the still predominant "hippie" (wimpy peace, love, happiness) cultural climate of the time (in the late '60s, early '70s). It was also inspired by D.C., and New York punk rock and earlier proto-punk [1].

Hardcore Buddhist Zen?
Hardcore punk generally eschews (resists, rejects, runs away from) commercialism, the established music industry, and "anything similar to the characteristics of mainstream rock" [14], which tries its darndest to garner fans, popularity, and commercial appeal in a capitalist marketplace.

Hardcore punk, on the other hand, frequently addresses social and political topics with "confrontational, politically charged lyrics" [15].

Hardcore sprouted underground scenes across the United States in the early 1980s (with a place for girls, riot grrrls, post-riot grrrls, new-riot grrrls, and Jews), particularly in Los Angeles, San Francisco (punk rock in California), Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York (NYHC), as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom.



Straight edge X: no drinking, drugs
Hardcore has spawned the straight edge movement and its associated sub-movements, hardline, and youth crew.

Hardcore was heavily involved in the rise of the independent record labels in the 1980s and with the D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) ethics in underground music scenes.

It has also influenced various music genres that in distinction to punk rock have experienced widespread commercial success, including grunge and crossover thrash metal.

Although the punk music genre started in English-speaking Western countries, notable hardcore scenes have existed in Buddhist Japan (Japanese punk rock, Japanese hardcore punk), Italy (Italian punk rock), and Brazil (Brazilian punk rock).

American Hardcore (film) 
Hardcore punk historian Steven Blush credits DC's Dischord Records co-owner Ian MacKaye (Bad Brains-inspired Minor Threat and Fugazi) with starting a "die-hard mindset that begat almost everything we now call Hardcore," which was virulently anti-music industry and anti-rock star [16].

An article in Drowned in Sound argues that late-1970s/early-1980s era hardcore is the true spirit of punk, because "all the poseurs and fashionistas f*cked off to the next trend of skinny pink ties with New Romantic haircuts, singing wimpy lyrics" and the punk scene now consisted of people like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, and Circle Jerks, dedicated to the DIY ethics [17].

Other writers have also attributed hardcore punk rock to a reaction against artsy and mellower sub-genres that punk grew into, such as post-punk and super popular new wave [2, 18]. Hardcore punk additionally broke with original punk rock song patterns and visuals, favoring lower-key aesthetics [19] that were all about getting back-to-basics. More
