The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC)

"Don't Panic"
This work of pure comedic genius began as a BBC Radio play by Douglas Adams (who was the first to think to combine science fiction and comedy), the audio of which is presented here: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It became so popular that it became a book then a sequel then a series then a trilogy with additional installments that made calling it a "trilogy" more and more misleading. It is perhaps the single funniest piece of work we have ever heard, a masterpiece.

ETs can grow UFOs with consciousness

Andromedins ETs grow "bio-ships" with their consciousness
How can the heart or head grow a UFO?
(Gaia) March 26, 2025: Why are Andromedins building "bio-ships" for other civilizations, and what impact does it have on the Galactic Federation?

Retired U.S. Navy Defense Officer Victoria Whitney and the official Omicron Commonwealth chancellor reveals her experiences with Andromedin shipbuilders.

We've been telling you Earthlings for eons.
Whitney describes the ETs' advanced wireframe technology for creating living bio-ships, where liquid AI infuses consciousness, integrates complex systems, and embeds emotions and personality.

Whitney also highlights their ships' cutting-edge features, including jump gates for interstellar travel and self-healing abilities.

The Andromedins' bio-ships for the Galactic Federation are paramount in nurturing a collaborative spirit among interstellar races and driving galactic progress.

Why consciousness?

"We think it, and we get it." The real cause is karma (deeds that came to fruition as the result of rebirth in privileged planes of existence superior to the human plane). The proximate cause in some deva worlds, such as the Celestial World of Creation in Buddhist cosmology, and the neighboring plane of existence where beings Wield Power Over Others' Creations, is karma. The result and fruit (vipaka and phala) of certain deeds is rebirth in worlds where things are mind-made. That is, one wishes or intends, and so it becomes. This is telepathy, PSI, and paranormal in human estimation but normal for devas ("shining ones" in space), as the Buddha explained:

Higher Celestial Worlds (Upper Sensual Sphere)
We have been with you for ages.
Devas live in four planes that float (fly, move, levitate) in the air, leaving them free from contact with the strife of lower worlds. In the Western sense of the word "heaven," the term best applies to the four worlds listed below:
  1. Parinirmita-vaśavartin परिनिर्मितवशवर्ती or Paranimmita-vasavatti परनिम्मितवसवत्ति (Tibetan གཞན་འཕྲུལ་དབང་བྱེད་, Wylie gzhan 'phrul dbang byed, Vietnamese Trời Tha Hoá Tự Tại, Chinese 他化自在天, Japanese Takejizai-ten, Burmese ပရနိမ္မိတဝသဝတ္တီ, Thai ปรนิมมิตวสวัตฺติ or ปริเนรมิตวศวรติน) The world of devas "with power over (others') creations" – These devas do not create pleasing forms that they desire for themselves, but their desires are fulfilled by the acts of other devas who wish for their favor. The ruler of this world is called Vaśavartin (Pāli Vasavatti), who has a longer life, greater beauty, more power and happiness, and more delightful sense-objects than the other devas of this celestial world....
  2. Nirmāṇarati निर्माणरति or Nimmānaratī निम्माणरती (Tibetan འཕྲུལ་དགའ་, Wylie phrul dga, Vietnamese Trời Hoá Lạc, Chinese 化乐天/化樂天, Japanese 化楽天 Keraku-ten, Burmese နိမ္မာနရတိ, Thai นิมมานรติ or นิรมาณรติ) The world of devas "delighting in their creations" – The devas of this world are capable of making any appearance [form] to please themselves. The lord of this world is called Sunirmita (Pāli Sunimmita), whose wife is the rebirth of Visākhā, formerly the chief of the upāsikās (female lay devotees) of the Buddha. The beings of this world are 3,750 feet (1,140 meters) tall and live for 2,304,000,000 years (as reckoned by the defunct Sarvāstivāda Buddhist tradition). The height of this world is 640 yojanas (one yojana = 7 miles) above the Earth.
  3. Tuṣita तुषित or Tushita तुसित (Tibetan དགའ་ལྡན་, Wylie dga' ldan, Vietnamese Trời Đâu Suất, Chinese 兜率天, Japanese Tosotsu-ten, Burmese တုသိတာ, Thai ดุสิต, ตุสิตา or ตุษิตา) – The world of "joyful" devas – This world is best known for being the world in which a bodhisattva lives before being reborn on the human plane. Until a few thousand years ago, the Bodhisattva of this world was Śvetaketu (Pāli Seta-ketu), who was then reborn as Prince Siddhārtha Gautama, who at 35 became the historical Buddha Śākyamuni; since then the current Bodhisattva has been Nātha (Nātha-deva), who will be reborn as Ajita and will become the Buddha Maitreya (Pāli Metteyya). While this bodhisattva is the foremost of the dwellers in Tuṣita, the ruler of this world is another deva named Santuṣita (Pāli Santusita). The beings of this world are 3,000 feet (910 m) tall and live for 576,000,000 years (Sarvāstivāda tradition). The height of this world is 320 yojanas above the Earth.
  4. Yāma याम (Tibetan འཐབ་བྲལ་, Wylie 'thab bral, Vietnamese Trời Dạ Ma, Chinese 夜摩天, Japanese Yama-ten, Burmese ယာမာ. Thai ยามา) Sometimes called the "celestial world without fighting" because it is the lowest of the Sensual Realm heavens to be physically separated from the tumults of the earthly world. These devas live in the air (sky), free of all difficulties. Its ruler is the deva Suyāma; according to some, his wife is the rebirth of Sirimā, a courtesan of Rājagṛiha, who at the time of the Buddha was generous to the monastics, which earned her tremendous merit (punya). The beings of this world are 2,250 feet (690 m) tall and live for 144,000,000 years (Sarvāstivāda tradition). The height of this world is 160 yojanas above the Earth. More

Everything ZEN? "Optimistic nihilism" - Nothing matters, but it's OK

Do what you did to Bart to me, Lisa. I want to be Big Fat Buddha. - His name is Budai, Dad, and he's NOT the Buddha. He is a jolly bodhisattva with a big candy sack . - Ooh, Santa Budai!
Maha Kassapa smiles at a flower.
Is optimistic nihilism a healthy way of life? In the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the original BBC Radio series before the books, there's a very funny scene in an exchange between the human, Arthur Dent, and a stranger on the planet of Magrathea, a mythical planet that builds planets and therefore couldn't possibly exist. But here it is.
The stolen ship, The Heart of Gold, which is powered by the new infinite improbability drive, has found it. (Zaphod Beeblebrox, the president of the galaxy, stole it when he was meant to be launching it so he could carry out this secret plan, which first includes getting here to Magrathea).

The crew has entered and left poor Arthur on the surface, where he runs into the Magrathean Slartibartfast, who builds planets and who made the fjords of Earth. He is now working on Earth Mark II.

"Don't panic" (Douglas Adams)
Arthur Dent can't believe his ears, a reference to Earth so far out in space? Earth really is significant and special! But now it's all gone, destroyed by the Vogons.

Arthur, reflecting in this way, asks Slartibartfast a philosophical question about the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. Slartibartfast gives a very strange answer.

The question runs something like, "What's the meaning of it all?"

Zen Master Bart* or Lisa Simpson? (Matt Groening)
Slartibartfast replies, "I say, 'Hang the sense of it'! I far rather be
happy than right any day."

"And are you?" Arthur interjects with awe.

"No," Slartibartfast laments, "that's where it all falls down of course."

It's a nice philosophy but he -- and one suspects most of us -- can't live up to it. We'd far rather be happy than right, but we are neither happy nor right.

(It sort of gives a boost to those of us who'd far rather be right than happy, though, sadly, we're not right either most of the time, and as for happy? Fuhgeddaboudit.)

So what's the chance any of us are going to pull off this optimistic nihilism?

Optimistic? Okay, if we can manage it or set it as our default option and not worry. Nihilism? Easy, for some of us, all bleak, depressive, laughing at Woody Allen quips at the absurdity of things. WATCH

How to be happy and get saved?
Cosmic Amitabha [God] Buddha
*Does anyone remember that episode of The Simpsons when a psychologist decides that Bart is the healthiest person in Springfield? The doctor finds Bart the most "Zen." He's spontaneous, unpremeditated, artless, authentic, speaks his mind. He's so healthy everyone decides to be like him, and Bart hates it. Suddenly his uniqueness is taken away.

These attributes really are aspirations of Zen Buddhism, according to Alan Watts. The reason for it seems rooted in Taoism more than in what the historical Buddha taught. But it all comes down to a great division that occurred in Mahayana Buddhism, the great Tariki versus Jiriki Debate, whether salvation (enlightenment, awakening, spiritual liberation, emancipation, moksha, freedom, nirvana) is to be attained by our power (efforts) or other power (the efforts of something extrinsic), by our force or an outside force).

What patriarchal Mahayana Buddhism needs is a Goddess of Compassion, a Mary: Guanyin
.
The historical Buddha Gautama (Gandhara)
The historical Buddha taught a path of our own efforts, but many later Mahayana Buddhists deviated back to the world-popular path of blind faith, intense devotion, petitioning a higher power to do it for us.

This is never what the Buddha taught, but it makes more philosophical sense: Since we can't by our own power, we need to engage a Higher Power (like Amitabha Buddha, Mother Mary/Bodhisattva of Compassion Kwan Yin, other Cosmic Buddhas, God, or who knows) and hitch our train to that.

Hey, and this tulku bodhisattva?
In Mahayana, everyone will be saved eventually because a great Bodhisattva is going to see to it before attaining buddhahood and his own emancipation.

That's the thinking, Alan Watts explains, and that's why Pure Land Buddhism (Nichiren Shōshū) from Japan and China, Imperial Holy Roman Catholicism, Christianity (Jesus freaks), Islam, some New Age teachings...are all so popular. Will it be us doing or other doing?

Christianity as afterthought
Super Friends: Buddha, Krishna, Mo, Yeshua, Aquaman, Moses, Laozi, Joe Smith (South Park)

Misquoting Jesus (Bart Ehrman)
It's funny that those who are adamant that some other power must save us still have a lot for us to do, as if we were saving ourselves.

Christians hypocritically say ONLY Jesus saves -- but to be saved, WE have to ask, repent, plead for the Holy Spirit to take possession of us and live our lives for us as the driver, be born again, get on God the Father's good side, pray and petition for His "grace," which is a "gift" that can only be given and never earned -- as if all the behaving and other stuff weren't work and earning it.

Savior? Now younger, nicer, whiter, easier!
Jeesh, what kind of scam? Most will do all that work and still not get it because their efforts weren't good enough. "Works without faith are dead" or something? "Not by thine own works art thou saved"?

Works (intentional karma, deeds) mean nothing? Clearly, they mean something. But Imperial Christianity (Protestant movements and the worldwide Catholic Church) wants to keep everyone in bondage and call that being "saved."

Compassionate Kwan Yin Bodhisattva
When you're up in heaven singing in a heavenly choir praising the Almighty God of the Universe, the great Creator, the doer, maker, thinker, and power of everything for an eternity, then you'll be happy?

No thanks. who wouldn't rather be a Buddhist, Independent, or New Ager to understand and make our own way to freedom and the end of all suffering (nirvana), to enlightenment in this very life and the deathless (amata)?

Trump gets ear pierced by Crooks

Trump for president? Well, yes, if you mean this Trump, the only acceptable one, L'il Meli Jr.
Americans dislike Ex-Pres. Don John Trump very much, though some seem to like and even belong to a kind of Donald Cult, in spite of what he said about how he would lie to Republicans to advance his political career. At least he tells the truth about his lies, sometimes, in his more candid moments. But are we really treating the Old Boy fairly? Fair enough, much fairer than he deserves. Here is a joke a to make the point.
Illustrative joke
This is not doctored. These are his real parents.
One day Trump went to greet the Pope at the airport near the coast on his first U.S. visit. They took a drive along the beach and visited the fashionable pier area with its fine restaurants and shops, with bodyguards and the Pope's retinue in tow -- as well as a crush of media. As the pontiff and president stood admiring the ocean, a breeze kicked up and blew the Pope's hat into the sea. Trump immediately walked upon the water and picked it up for him, brushing it off and returning it to the Pope dry and unharmed. That evening all the major news outlet ran the same headline: "Trump can't swim."
He's not kidding. He really wants to molest her.
So does the lying "fake media," which can't get enough of him, cut him a break? All the time. In fact, they go overboard to promote him and use him for ratings. Back before his election, rather than showing an active Bernie Sanders' rally as he talked about a vision of a better/fairer American economy, the networks would wait at an empty stage for Trump and give valuable airtime to Trump, who wasn't even there. Maybe they just chase ratings, maybe they hated Bernie's radical politics and socialist promises, or maybe they loved Trump's capitalist jib and patriotic fantasies.

Like mother like son: genetic hair problems.
The only good thing about Trump, and we as an outlet who are no fans of conservatives or liars, will say this nice thing about him: He shakes things up and has almost singlehandedly brought the Republican party to ruin and universal ill repute, ah, that often racist "Grand Old Party" (GOP). Yet, they still can't get enough of him. He is the Zaphod Beeblebrox* of American candidates, and that job -- his real job -- he is doing better than anyone else.
  • Draconian: I'm a snake, and you love it.
*Zaphod Beeblebrox is the president of the Galaxy in Douglas Adams' famous trilogy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is nearly all comedic with dollops of wisdom so big that one wonders at Adams' real aim in writing it. One political gem is explaining why such a loose cannon would ever be made president of anything, much less the galaxy. As it turns out, we've all been misunderstanding presidents. They do not get elected to wield power like they think, they get selected to draw attention away from the real sources of it, the movers and shakers behind the scenes, hidden from the regular people though controlling all of our lives. Much better than reading it or watching the movie and TV versions is listening to the original BBC 4 radio series.
Will bleed for attention: narcissism
If nothing else, everyone who is paying attention has to admit that he made paying attention to boring politics seem like a necessity. B.S. Obama got away with so many war crimes and things Dick Cheney could only dream of doing, and no one was paying attention or cared, and even now people will not believe the incredible harm he did. We as Americans are only into what UCLA Professor of Psychology David Sears called "symbolic politics." We don't care what is really going on except, maybe, when we perceive how it affects us. Real politics? Booooring.

Barry Soetoro Obama (aka Barrack Hussein Obama) and "Big Mike" (aka Michelle)
.
Kill anybody lately, Barry? (rense.com)
A gay Black man who smokes crack and is married to a demonstrable transvestite, who kills people with his bare hands when need be (and otherwise has them assassinated), who was groomed by the CIA for the job and worked on secret space projects in his youth can't hold a candle to Trump. And the nation loved that guy, too, but try to make them. But try to make them see the truth, forget about it. It's easy to lie to people, as Trump well knows, but it is nearly impossible to convince anyone that they have been lied to.

Joe, where's Pres. Jill? I can't cover for you.
You have to vote, so you have to vote for somebody. Our candidate? Our choice? Andrew D. Basiago. (Barry knows him). He's the future of this country. In the meantime, we will settle for Jill Stein presidency or, if politics have to carry on the way they are for the capitalist war machine Mario Savio complained about in Berkeley, we will settle for the lesser of two evils: evil Cackling Kamala with Jill Biden as her VP.
Joe Biden looks tired and exhausted. Here are the tricks his team is using to obscure his blunders

A vote for Basiago is a vote for
government transparency.

White female hitchiking to Yosemite

It's a Dharma Bum life, Jay-Z.
Societe US says there are 18 behaviors branded as low class by American society. Some of us are the haves and some are the have-nots, but being "low class" isn’t so much about what we have as much as it is about what we don’t, namely "class." The American caste system isn't as obvious to outsiders as it is to us. Any highschooler learns it. "Social clues," Cage the Elephant tells us, are the key. There are dead-giveaways, habits that tell everyone that our upbringing was not posh, upscale, spoiled, or even pampered.

Dharma Bums (Jack Kerouac)
We were at the back of the plane by the bathrooms. We fed on Twinkies instead of cake. We ate Heinz yellow mustard on benches instead of Grey Poupon in cars. We spat like Hock Tua Gal [Hawk Tuah Girl], as Southern as a Tennessee brat in Daisy Dukes. We considered hitching all the way to the greatest National Park in the land, Yo-Semite, now open to Gentiles, too.

This is not about eating junk food all the way to the holy haunts of the Paiute Indians. This is about getting back to the land and running into a meadow or grove until a deer or Sasquatch notices. (Bigfoot is probably high up in the cold hills, not wandering from peak to peak in the summer flush of a late spring and all this Tuolumne River melt into the lazy Merced River of the valley). So mosquitoes and chiggers, mites and ticks are much bigger worries than the park's charismatic megafauna like grizzlies and brown bears.

At the end of the rainbow
Hey, Trashy, you're not riding or dining with us. Keep it movin, and take that knapsack with you.

You’ve known all along…
(Araya Amenti) July 8, 2024: ITALY. Hello and welcome. I'm Araya, and I am here to help you remember who you are and to get what you want out of this human experience. In this space, we talk about all things spirituality, manifestation, consciousness, health, and wellness.

I spent years and years and hundreds of thousands of dollars learning how to heal my body from chronic illness, which ended up being my soul's chosen path to awakening and having me remember who I am.

A new earth is here, and I am honored to be a guide as we shift into this new 5D world. Let's decondition [decolonize] our minds, leave the Matrix behind, and celebrate our uniqueness and authentic truth. Namaste, my friends!

Man and dog live a year in dangerous woods

(RAMIZ IN THE WILD) April 27, 2024: Hello🖐, dear viewers🤩 and subscribers😍to this channel. This time I lived with my canine companion for a year and two months in a very dangerous forest. It turns out that living in the forest for a long time is not a problem; in the forest one can find everything one needs for life. For example, there's water, food, and so on. In short, I built burrowed cave hut in 15 days. The only problem was that the clay took a long time to dry, but I solved this problem by drying it with fire. And I figured out my beloved dog was injured in the forest, but I did everything necessary. I patched up her wound, and she recovered quickly. I show all the rest in the video.

What is the Buddha's awakening secret?

I'd like to connect with Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal. I have a BIG question.

Never mind her. I have a fast question first.
Q: What was the Buddha's secret, you know, to be able to wake up when he did? I want to awaken now, to experience enlightenment. I'm ready.

A: Your question, if you reflect, carries an assumption. Would you like to reword it?

Q: No, there's no assumption. I'm completely open to his secret. What is it?

WQ: Ah, then, in that case, which one?

Q: Which one what?

WQ: Which secret?

Q: There's more than one?

Stop wasting time. I just want the secret!
WQ: Did you assume there was only one, that you had everything but that one thing? We understood that you were "completely open," not closedminded to the Truth he made known. Moreover, what if we were to give it just like that, you really think you could bite it off in one chunk, chew it, digest it? Nearly everyone else needed a process, but you [like Bahiya of the Barkcloth] are ready to just get it and assimilate it with no practice beyond a moment's reflection?

I prefer to work with koan-riddles.
Q: Uh. I just want the shortcut, the Teaching in brief, a koan maybe.

WQ: Oh, why didn't you say so? In that case, if we understand you correctly, you want THE answer to life, the universe, and everything?

Q: Yes, that's it!

WQ: "It" again, like there's just one thing, in that case here is the answer. Are you ready?

Q: YES!

WQ: 42.

Q: Forty-two what?

C'mon, tell me! I'm in a hurry.
WQ: Well, may we suggest you begin with the Five Precepts. Then, once you're settled into that and have made it a basic mode of living, without deviating, without wobbling or wavering, take up the 37 Requisites of Enlightenment.

Q: What are those?

WQ: Which?

Q: Those 37!

WQ: You mean you aren't going to ask about the first five?

Q: Which 5?

WQ: The basic five that when added to the other 37 (add up to 42 and) produce enlightenment, bodhi, awakening here and now, in this very life, of course.

Q: No, I want the secret.

WQ: And when given the secret, "42," you ignore the first portion, the foremost, the most basic division, and just want the juicier part?

I'm not a blank slate, you know? I'm smart.
Q: No, I want it all!

WQ: Ah, now we understand. You're like a Zen student, too eager. You know what they do to someone in Zen who comes asking?

Q: What?

WQ: So you don't know?

Q: No.

WQ: It would be helpful if you answered the questions we ask as asked and not change or reword them. They're asked with precision. We know where we're going with them. You, as yet, do not.

Q: I just want The Secret!

WQ: You keep saying THE secret, but when it is given, you fail to ask about the first part of it, and you fail to answer when asked a follow-up question.

Q: What question?

WQ: What happens to a Zen student wishing to learn?

Q: I don't know, what?

WQ: She is told no, and the door of the temple is slammed in her face. And if she persists and doesn't go away, she is made to sweep. Now, why do you suppose that is?

Q: I don't know. The Buddha wouldn't do that, would he?

WQ: No, he wasn't Zen. In his original way of teaching, the Buddha would give a gradual instruction -- assuming the recipient were ready to hear it, respectful, sitting, attentive, open, evincing a good heart and not holding an agenda or ulterior motive.

Is this Zen? Why are you avoiding my question?
Q: Gimme the gradual instruction!!!

WQ: Did you ever hear of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?

Q: What the heck's that?

WQ: A punk band.

Q: Huh? A punk koan?

WQ: No, punk band. No, you aren't ready. And we aren't the Buddha. But just look at this dusty floor!

Q: Floor? What does the floor have to do with anything?

WQ: We can't imagine. Have you seen the porch? It's really nice.

Q: What?

WQ: Would you mind helping us test the door lock?

Q: I'm not a locksmith!

WQ: No, you needn't be. Just stand on that side and see if it opens.

Q: See if what opens?

WQ: The lock keeping the door closed.

Q: Which, the door or lock?

Hey! C'mon, I asked nicely.
WQ: Either. You've been given the secret. Develop it (both parts) and come back, maybe with a softened, malleable, pliable attitude that wants to know and will do whatever it takes to be handed wisdom.

Q: I am willing to do whatever it takes.

WQ: What if what it takes is to calm down?

Q: I'm in a hurry.

WQ: We can see that. We hate to keep you. We handed you the secret. Develop confidence (conviction, faith, saddha) in a teacher so that when that teacher speaks, his or her words will not be wasted on a skeptic, a spiritual shopper going around collecting doctrines, or a moody junior psychic seeing who or what strikes her fancy.

Q: Just convince me.

WQ: It isn't the job of a teacher to make the Path to Awakening more enticing than it already is, only to make it known, or to remind others that it is available for now. There are aeons when it is not available, when it is lost to history, when the human world wonders in darkness until no one can explain, and no one knows what to practice at all.

Q: Oh, I get it!

WQ: You do?

Q: Yeah, you want me to sweep!

WQ: No, we want you to be amenable to instruction. You ask for someone else's hard-won wisdom. If you had a sensible follow-up question, we would explain. But you only want "a secret," the whole thing. When given it, you fumble. That's not a surprise. Most people would. But when asked to pick it up, not change it, and follow it step by step, you over-eagerly leap ahead. You ignore the most basic component, those first 5 things and grasp only at the 37.

Q: OK, OK, OK, what are the five?

WQ: Is that any way to ask? You've already been told, and you were even told what the other 37 are. You have it all. There's the secret to life, the universe, and everything.

Q: Wait, that's it? I want the answer not the map to finding the answer. I don't want to have to go look!

The Gateless Gate? The temple door
WQ: Exactly. We still need help with the door lock.

Q: I'll help. Just don't lock me out.

WQ: What else is a door lock for?

Q: To lock things in?

WQ: Ah, then, the latch wouldn't be on the inside, would it?

Ananda: Okay, she's gone now. What are the first five things?

WQ: Good question, Ananda. They are the very foundation of Buddhist practice. The Buddha taught a path-and-practice, a Dhamma-Vinaya (Doctrine and Discipline) that leads to awakening for those who practice it.

Ananda: Did he give a shortcut?

Venerable sir. - Yes, Ananda?
WQ: Yes, as for a "shortcut," this is the shortcut. We don't need to reinvent the (Dharma-) wheel, because supreme buddhas make it known. We only need to learn the Dharma of a Supremely Awakened Buddha, usually from the Noble (Awakened) Sangha, the collective of enlightened disciple practitioners, who are not always in robes. It's easier to find them in robes, but from the time of the Buddha, most were not in robes. Many awakened when he taught, almost every time he gave a sutra. For those who did not immediately awaken and gain the "eye of the Dharma" at the end of it, his words stayed in their hearts and came to fruition later. It was not lost, except that they lost time and the opportunity to advance to the tipping point right then and there. When they entered the stream, not all of them abandoned the lay life to join the monastic community.

Ananda: Why not?

WQ: It's not clear. Maybe they had already done that and so could hear and benefit from the Teaching or had other obstructing karma to work through.

Ananda: I see. So one begins with basic morality to still the mind and heart, right?

WQ: Yes, right. The first 5 are the Five Precepts, the foundation of a Buddhist pyramid we are going to build. Central to it is to refrain from killing. The four other corners of the foundation are to abstain from stealing, sexual misconduct, deception, and intoxicants that occasion the breaking of these five.

Ananda: Aren't there more precepts?

WQ: Yes, they're wrapped up in these basic five. Avoid intoxicants.

Ananda: Even good intoxicants, like medicines?

WQ: Avoid the bad ones that do harm to oneself and others. Imagine a substance that when used, what one would not do sober, one might do intoxicated. Avoid that kind. Alcohol is that kind.

Ananda: But in a tincture sometimes there's alcohol as a preservative or solvent.

WQ: And taking it, will are you likely to do what you wouldn't do sober?

Ananda: No, it's just a trivial amount to get at the medicine.

WQ: So as long as you aren't fooling yourself and behaving foolishly, heedlessly, recklessly. View intoxication as possibly worse than all the other unskillful deeds. Look at intoxicated people around you. Is that any way to be? Some say lying is the worst of these five, worse than killing, because a person who readily lies and cover up unskillful deeds, what wouldn't that person do?

Ananda: It seems like commonsense.

WQ: Yes but, you know, commonsense has become uncommon now. These were just commonsense. After a while, they become commonsense again. Just do unto others as you wish others to do unto you. It's a common golden rule, fundamental, an ABC lesson. The Buddha said there was nothing about these five that he was saying new. They are agreed on from way back, spoken of by many wise people and traditions. With these established, we need the second layer before crowning our internal-monument with liberating-insight.

Ananda: That sounds like the good part, the unknown part that only the Buddha taught.

WQ: The teaching that all things are impersonal (anatta) is the unique teaching of buddhas. No other teacher was teaching the other 37 Requisites or "things pertaining to enlightenment" (bodhi-pakkhiya-dhammā).

The Buddha spoke of them in seven clusters to make them easier to digest as seven sets of factors. They comprise all of the important doctrines the Buddha taught for what it might take to wake up. (I say might because I have never seen a sutra or case where anyone systematically developed all of them then woke up. That might happen in good monastic training, as with Pa Auk Sayadaw, but even then, I do not imagine it would be explicit. It could be though).

One successful American student of the Sayadaw, who became a once-returner without being a monastic in this life, told me about stacks of notes that had to be studied and memorized overnight. What exactly these notes said or why there would be 50 pages of them I was not told in detail. The person said a book would have to be written about it and that would come later. So far as I know that book still has not come and is less likely as time passes. The point in being told this as I pried to understand what "work" was being done that took so much time or effort in doing. How could one have to hurry up to finish if the "doing" was enjoying the absorptions (jhanas). What else did this sayadaw teacher, after all? He teaches so much more. The image of him as teaching the jhanas is wrong; he doesn't really teach even the first one. The first one happens with practice as stated in the sutras (particularly the Maha Satipatthana Sutta). When the first one happens to a person, which is how they will report it rather than saying they "did" it, then the Sayadaw has much to teach to develop it and move on to the next seven or eight (depending how one is counting them, by the sutra method or the Abhidhamma commentarial method). Let's stick with the sutras and say there are eight because the ninth is a technicality of factors present; they're present either way. The point was that it's impossible to memorize 50 pages of notes in a day. Except it isn't -- it becomes possible due to strong mindfulness (Pali sati, Sanskrit smirti = "memory").

Even I noticed in my retreat practice that I could put my mind on a question to bring something up that I knew long ago, and it would come. I hadn't been able to remember in years. But asking a memory question and then leaving it, it would come. How? Not by force, I think it was due to the cleansing of the mind that practice produces. As the mind calms and gains coherence, it puts itself in order, then we regain our memory like Ven. Ananda had all the time, if just for a moment.

Here are the 37 in seven sets:
  1. The 4 Foundations of Mindfulness (satipatthāna)
  2. The 4 Right Efforts (see padhāna),
  3. The 4 Roads to Power (iddhi-pāda),
  4. The 5 Spiritual Faculties (indriya, see bala),
  5. The 5 Spiritual Powers (bala),
  6. The 7 Factors of Enlightenment (bojjhanga)
  7. The 8 Ennobling Path Factors (see magga).
According to German Theravada scholar-monk Ven. Nyanatiloka (Buddhist Dictionary via palikanon.com), in MN 77 all 37 of them are enumerated and explained though not called by this name.

A detailed explanation of these factors is given in The Path of Purification (Vis.M. XXII). In S.XLVII, 51, 67, only the Five Spiritual Faculties (indriya) are calle bodhi-pakkhiya-dhammā and in the Jhāna-Vibhanga, only the Seven Factors of Enlightenment (bojjhanga).
