“Everyone is shooting at you. And for what? Just to get a little food,” says Ibrahim, a [Palestinian] father of four who risked his life only to walk away with two bags of pasta and a bag of bulgur [wheat]. “It’s anything but humane.”

Since May 26, the GHF has been the main group Israel’s allowed to distribute food in the territory. It’s run by U.S. security contractors and operates just four sites, all overseen by Israeli forces. Each site opens for roughly 11 minutes every day in an attempt to feed the nearly 2 million population in desperate need of aid.

More than 1,000 people have been killed by Israeli sniper fire or stampedes near the sites. Israel has blocked almost all other aid getting in since March 2, and at least 150 Palestinians have died from malnutrition since Israel launched its war on Gaza.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has raised doubts as to whether or not Donald Trump was struck by a bullet during the assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally earlier this month.

Director Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday (Wednesday, July 24) about the ongoing investigation into the attempt on the former president’s life and the response of law enforcement agencies that day.

When questioned by committee chairman Jim Jordan as to whether the FBI had accounted for all of the bullets at the scene, Director Wray said that eight spent rounds were recovered from the rooftop of the building from which the gunman opened fire.

“With respect to former president Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear,” the FBI chief added.

“As I sit here right now, I don’t know whether that bullet… in addition to causing the grazing, could have landed somewhere else.”

He added: “But I believe we’ve accounted for all the shots in the cartridges.”

[Alleged lone wolf] gunman Thomas Crooks [allegedly] fired a volley of eight rounds towards Trump using an AR-15 rifle while the former president stood on stage speaking to rallygoers in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one rallygoer and wounding two others.

Former White House physician Ronny Jackson has said that Trump was shot in the ear creating a 2cm-wide wound, according to a memo shared with Axios.

Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill: Friends (book)

Reading Deanne Stillman’s recently published book Blood Brothers: The Story of the Strange Friendship Between Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill stirs a dispiriting sense of reverse déjà vu.

Celebrity worship, inequality, homelessness, governmental disregard for wildlife, and treaties with Native American tribes -- they all figure in a complex narrative winding from America’s 19th-century Western frontier up through 2016’s dramatic protests at Standing Rock Indian Reservation and the Trump administration’s recent moves to [destroy] wilderness areas [by exploiting them through business ventures of] mining and drilling.

“Trump’s war on the wilderness didn’t start with Trump. It’s a last attempt to completely take over the land, take whatever’s there,” Stillman says.

“The tribes have been removed and sent to reservations, and now the move to eradicate wild horses, and undo all these wilderness protections. I believe this is the endgame in a war against Native Americans.… This is just a continuation of the dark part of the American story.”

Blood Brothers covers earlier pages in that tale. Revolving around two historical icons whose names still signify a kind of outlaw independence, it expands on themes in the author’s previous books: 2001’s Twentynine Palms: A True Story of Murders, Marines, and the Mojave, 2008’s bestselling Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West, and 2012’s award-winning Desert Reckoning. All deal with what Stillman calls “the promise and failure of the American dream.”

William “Buffalo Bill” Cody and “Sitting Bull” the Hunkpapa Lakota Medicine Man were two of the most famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) celebrities of post-Civil War America, and their rarified positions seeded their unlikely bond.

Buffalo Bill was a charismatic, velvet jacket-wearing “ladies’ man,” who worked as a Pony Express rider, railroad buffalo killer, and US Army scout, then performed in and eventually produced “equestrian extravaganzas” that re-enacted Cowboy-and-Indian battles and other sensational events.

Former scouts, cowboys, Indians, and sharpshooter Annie Oakley (whom Sitting Bull regarded as a daughter) all performed in Cody’s immensely popular show, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.

It was a huge “get” to book Sitting Bull, who had defiantly led his people to Canada for four years before starvation forced them to surrender their ponies, guns, and freedom to US Army demands and reservation rule. Brisk ticket sales measured the public’s fascination with the warrior once cursed as Public Enemy No. 1.

The book alludes to male bonding over ritual and bloodshed in hunting and soldiering. But after the Army’s vicious campaign to eradicate Plains tribes so white farmers could settle native lands, how was working together possible for onetime enemies shoved aside by America’s rapid industrialization -- namely Sitting Bull, Buffalo Bill, and his cast?

According to Stillman, traveling shows like “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” offered the only way off the reservation: “They got to hit the road and be free again, within a limited frame of reference.… Cody was spinning out this American scripture and permitting cowboys and Indians to live inside this world that was being obliterated on the outside.”

 

By the time Sitting Bull signed on with Buffalo Bill, after ventures with other shows that did not treat him well, he was fascinated by American technology and wanted his children to “flourish in the world that had overtaken [and destroyed] them.”
 
But he could not understand how a culture whose weapons had defeated his people could not take care of its own; according to Stillman, he would “sometimes give away his salary” to orphans he encountered on the street.

 

Sitting Bull emerges as a compassionate leader of integrity with a wily business sense; the highest-paid member of Buffalo Bill’s show, he asked for a signing bonus and insisted on ownership rights to photographs of him so he could raise money for his family.
 
Were he alive today he’d likely exhibit a rock star’s branding savvy. Buffalo Bill paid high tribute when he told a Minnesota reporter that “no white man could convince his people to follow him as they starved” as Sitting Bull had done.

 

Stillman also presents Sitting Bull as a very intuitive “spiritual force to contend with,” recounting his lifelong affinity for wild creatures, especially wolves and birds... More

Notice that police "lock down" schools with any pretext now? It is a near daily occurrence in Southern California. Does it prepare us for prison or martial law? Police, the ultimate bullies, rule. And we excuse it all by saying, "Boys will be boys."

For a crucial documentary on so important a topic, which might have been better titled "Victim," it is almost certain that those who need to see it most will never get the chance. Why? It has been rated R. Violence, blood, gore? No problem. But cuss words? Never! Our puritanical ways shoot us in the foot again, not accidentally. Who launched our culture of bullying, and what holds it in place?

How did it begin?
Who began imperial invasions and Western hegemony -- brought to a height by the British/United Kingdom ideal blamed on the infamous "Aryan invasion" plan of the Nazis -- and others before them to institute the jungle law (Lord of the Flies) of bullying?

We have a "conspiracy theory" we would like to unfurl. Bullying is too important to our society to allow a film to do anything about. Our policing and war recruiting depend on, so does our seedy sex trade. All three depend on molestation, boundary violation, and even sexual transgression -- bullying.

Police bully blacks, the poor, and the voiceless. Fathers torment whomever they have access to. Why? Well, mainly because they were tormented, and they're angry about it. Mothers lay into daughters and needle sons. Women fight one another in shopping mall parking lots. Girls jump other girls.

And boys have an unmitigated history of hazing, homosexual acts, and horrifying belittling behavior that is all part of growing up American (and British or European or anywhere else with a history of colonization). What prompts us to bother, bug, "bugger," rape, beat, and bring everyone into line? What moves us to gang up on any perceived weakness and be so intolerant of differences? It did not begin with humans.

We speculate the titans and deities (asuras and devas, "demons" and "archangels") brought it here, the former to make trouble and the latter inadvertently by giving some groups and bloodlines a "divine right" to rule as regents until their return.

Most religion now on the planet is the worst form of bullying. The Bible is the book on and of bullying -- first by God, then by kings, then by men (as heads of families), then by wives, then by age, each person in line being beat on and beating the next.

The Western pecking order is not to be upset for fear of heavenly wrath. Was this what the Catholic Church, Inc. meant to do, or was it just the most profitable way to go in the long run? Are priests taught to molest our sons, pilfer our pockets, and scare the h-e-double-hockey-sticks out of everybody else? Who knows? God might smite us for even asking.

So with hate on one side and fear on the other, strong and weak, father and mother figure, conspire and squeeze us. They bully us. They toughen us up "for our own good." They make us future perpetrators. And we have a growing prison system, drug abuse problem, and sex work industry to show for it.

With all that on the line, it is a wonder "Bully" didn't get an NC-17 rating to make sure no one would see it.

See it. Take your kids. Get the PTA to show it to all the other parents. Screen it at assemblies for school kids to see. Is there any reason why the "bad words" couldn't be bleeped to protect our childlike ears?

Milky Way is bigger than thought

WASHINGTON – Take that, Andromeda! For decades, astronomers thought when it came to the major galaxies in Earth's cosmic neighborhood, our Milky Way was a weak sister to the larger Andromeda. But not anymore.

The Milky Way is considerably larger, bulkier, and spinning faster than astronomers once thought, Andromeda's equal.

Scientists mapped the Milky Way in a more detailed, three-dimensional way and found that it's 15 percent larger in breadth. More importantly, it's denser, with 50 percent more mass, which is like weight. The new findings were presented Monday at the American Astronomical Society's convention in Long Beach, Calif.

That difference means a lot, said study author Mark Reid of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. The slight 5-foot-5, 140-pound astrophysicist said it's the cosmic equivalent of him suddenly bulking up to the size of a 6-foot-3, 210-pound NFL linebacker. More>>
