The answer, American Buddhist nun Ani Pema Chödrön suggests, might be just the opposite of what one expects.

Ani Pema Chödrön was born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in 1936, in New York City.

She attended Miss Porter’s School in Connecticut and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught as an elementary school teacher for many years in both New Mexico and California.

The venerable nun was once a hot young hippie

Pema has two children and three grandchildren. While in her mid-30s, Ani Pema traveled to the French Alps and encountered Lama Chime Rinpoche, with whom she studied for several years. She became a novice nun in 1974 while studying with Lama Chime in London.

His Holiness the 16th Karmapa came to Scotland at that time, and Ani Pema received her ordination from him.

Why Welcome the Unwelcome? That's crazy

Pema first met her root guru, [sex scandal ridden cult leader] Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1972. Lama Chime encouraged her to work with Rinpoche, and it was with him that she ultimately made her most profound connection, studying with him from 1974 until his death in 1987.

At the request of the 16th Karmapa, she received the full bhikshuni (Buddhist nun) ordination in the Chinese lineage of Buddhism in 1981 in Hong Kong.

When ONE man IS an island

What constitutes an "island" -- independence or pure willpower? (Banyak Islands/bing.com)

If efforting could do it, we'd all have done it.

"No man is an island"? That's what I've heard said.

But as the Buddha guided, he advised his wandering ascetic students to be an "island" (dipa, dvipa) unto themselves. Now, this Pali/Sanskrit word may also be translated as "lamp." If one is a lamp or island unto oneself, one has become one's own guide.

As a follower of the Buddha's Dharma, a "Buddhist," if you will, I go for guidance (not "refuge") to the Three Jewels: the Teacher (the Buddha), the Teaching (the Dharma), and the well Taught enlightened (Aryan) community of disciples (the Sangha).

Having gotten my guidance, I become a lamp and go to my island.

My island is withdrawal and seclusion from sensual distractions -- all the Five Hindrances.* There I cultivate their opposites, the Five Factors of Absorption,* the "limbs of jhana." Is it wrong? It works.

Where there's too much will, there will be a way.

To be a hermit all the time would be sad and a distraction. To be a hermit some of the time is a blessing and a treasure.

As humans we need to "find ourselves," regain our balance and equanimity, cultivate our innate inner-ability to place the mind/heart where we want it rather than having it always run wild.

Wild is good, wild is nice, and letting go with childlike abandon, there's a time for that. It's usually called college or playing as a creative kid encouraged to cultivate creativity.

But there comes a time when it's been enough, and meditation (jhana, samadhi, right stillness, cultivating in the kammatthana, the field of one's spiritual endeavor) becomes important above all else.

What then? HOW shall one do it? Here the Teaching of the Teacher to the [Nobly] Taught becomes all-important:

These are FIVE HINDRANCES to cultivation (meditation).

1. Sensual desire (kāmacchanda): craving pleasures of the six senses (pleasant sights, sounds, smells, savors, and sensations, and the mind's mental simulations).
2. Ill-will (vyāpāda, byāpāda): feelings of aversion (avoidant anger, hostility, resentment, bitterness, or hatred).
3. Sleepiness and laziness or sloth-and-torpor (thīna-middha): lassitude and disinclination in action with little to no effort behind it.
4. Restlessness-and-worry (uddhacca-kukkucca): the inability to calm the mind and focus one's energy.
5. Skeptical doubt (vicikiccha): lack of confidence, faith, conviction, or trust in what one is doing.

What then if there were opposing qualities to overcome a hindrance with a helpful factor that aids progress in meditation (absorption) that can be cultivated and developed at will?

In the commentarial tradition, the development of meditative or mental absorption (jhāna) is described as the development of Five Factors of Absorption (Pali jhananga, which are cetasikas, Sanskrit caitasika) that counteract the Five Hindrances: [See Note 17* Table: Form-level absorptions (rūpa jhānas).]

The FIVE FACTORS OF ABSORPTION (meditation):

1. Applied attention (vitakka) counteracts sloth and torpor (lethargy and drowsiness).
2. Sustained attention (vicāra) counteracts skeptical doubt (uncertainty).
3. Rapture (pīti, joy, bliss) counteracts ill-will (malice).
4. Supersensual pleasure (sukha, happiness) counteracts restlessness-worry (excitation and anxiety).
5. One-pointedness (ekaggata) counteracts intense sensual craving and subtle sense desire.

WWJD? What would Jello do? Jello Biafra is a genius, but too principled for most music lovers. The band the Dead Kennedys could have been big if they had agreed to change their name or comprised in many other ways.

Eventually, in the end, the other members had to make money from their hit songs.

Jello said no to selling out. He had his own label, Alternative Tentacles, to pay the bills. So they got someone else to stand in on tour (as the audience did most of the singing), and they hit the road.

The DKs foresaw many things that are happening now. They happened before but never so blatantly. Once in L.A. before a Democratic convention, they played a free concert in a downtown parking lot. The police raided it, shooting people with deadly projectiles (rubber bullets and beanbag rounds) as they ran away terrified.

It was mayhem started by the LAPD, as usual, overreacting as a "show of force." The mainstream media didn't report that side of riots because who dares question police authority in favor of punks or peaceful demonstrators? Certainly not the LA Times or local news stations. Therefore, officers knew they could get away with it -- the same way

It's not easy policing such a big city with such a small force, with a police to citizen ratio much smaller than a comparable city like New York. So city officials let them get away with it through the administrations of many police chiefs, paying out tens of millions in settlements to avoid lawsuits in the most egregious cases of crimes committed under color of law.

Now the City of Los Angeles has the lockdown it always dreamed of. This looks like the "power trip" our police force was always on. People aren't afraid of "the enemy" enough. Pres. Trump is doing an asinine job as commander and chief. Youthful partygoers, yearning for spring break, keep flaunting this epidemic scare. It's as if they intuit that it's BS and we're not being told what's really going on. So it looks like Martial Law is on the horizon under one pretense or another. "The people demand it."

Mayor Garcetti almost announced martial law on Sunday night. Mainstream media news reporters taunt him to impose fines at scofflaws, arrest kids at the beach, punish them, scare some sense into them, call them "selfish" for infecting no one by not staying six feet from each other. He'll crackdown soon.

Real rebellion is from the inside out.

It's the carrot and the stick. He's been promising carrots, so the dissatisfied need a stick. When there are more tests forced on everyone, who are as of today required to show government ID to be tested, the jump in reported cases will scare the living heck out of the population.

What can I do about this?

Q: My menstrual period is uncomfortable, and it can be messy and disheartening. Can I meditate through it?

A: Yes. We feel you. Disposable tampons are no solution. Pads with "wings" are little better. We tried menstrual (deva) cups and reusable pads, which work. But they, like tampons, need application (shoving). Ugh.

Now we use common red shop rags folded and placed inside briefs; they're easy to wash cotton and really cheap by the dozen, like cloth diapers but more discreet. Now there's something even more convenient.

What's the answer to this refreshing time?
