Started streaming Jan. 7, 2024: Bhutanhas also been affected. A 6.8-magnitude quake [updated to 7.1] struck China's remote Tibet region on Tuesday morning. [This is disputed territory claimed by an independent Tibet, nibbled at by India, touching Nepal, not far from Bhutan, but invaded and occupied by Chinese forces.] The death toll is rising to at least 53 [at least 126 with at least as many injured], state media is reporting. US media states that a magnitude of 7.1 earthquake jolted China-Nepal border. The earthquake jolted Dingri County in Xigaze City (Shigatse), located in the Xizang(Tibet) Autonomous Region, at 9:05 am local time. In addition to the confirmed fatalities, 62 others have been injured. The powerful tremor has left a trail of destruction, and rescue efforts are underway.

Jan. 7, 2025: More than 100 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet, with tremors felt across the Himalayas in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of northern India. The 7.1-magnitude quake struck at 9:05 am local time at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) and was followed by multiple aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). #CNN #News

Los Angeles is a strange and wonderful place. It is massive and misunderstood. First of all, there are two Los Angeleeses, the city and the county. The city has more than 4 million people crammed in it, and the county has a population of over 10 million. These numbers fluctuate and are probably underreported because not everyone is documented or staying. There are 100,000 tourists on any given day, more in the summer. And people are constantly abandoning the megalopolis for other states then coming back. "Going to California" is a popular song for the band Led Zeppelin, and one has to wonder why of all the places in the world (Kashmir, Ireland, Shangri-la, etc.) they chose the Golden State to sing about. It has to be because everyone wants go there. Everyone is going to California eventually, even if just to visit. In its strangeness, apart from its size (roughly parallel to Bangkok, Thailand, at about 50 miles across), it has islands. We have snowy peaks, thick forest cover, desert, (asphalt) jungle, municipal wastelands, oil rigs, caves, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, beaches, and islands. Three earthquakes, including a magnitude 3.6, hit off the coast of SoCal
. (KABC Los Angeles) A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Southern California Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The 3.6 quake struck around 5:32 pm and was centered about 27 miles from San Clemente Island and 29 miles from Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, the USGS said.
Two smaller quakes (pre-shocks) had hit the same region about an hour-and-a-half earlier. The first measured at 3.1 and hit around 4:11 pm, and another 2.5-magnitude quake struck a few minutes later.

Los Angeles is a nice place. Everyone should visit. Now is a good time, smoky skies and unstable ground, plus Hollywood's Avenue of the Stars (bronze plaques embedded in sidewalk cement getting walked on and making good photo ops. The beaches, while polluted with fecal contamination, are beautiful to see and make great photo ops. Think of the social media potential. Have them eating their hearts out back home! The largest fire in the state is raging nearby, but that only affects the mountain people. Lowlanders in the Valley don't care, except along the edges where civilization meets the foothills.
It's okay because only about 100,000 acres of SoCal are currently burning, and some of that is in the OC or San Berdoo, part of the IE

Unless one works in the DTLA skyline, those skyscrapers owned mostly by banks, one is not even going to notice the fires. The quakes are a different matter. They're amplified the higher up one is due to modern technology that absorbs the shaking on rollers. It's all de rigueur.

There is that falsely flavored flour powder to make dead hunks of flesh crispy and tangy, so if we roll around in it during a temblor before the flames arrive, that's a kind of shaking and baking. Fire is not even necessary. It was 117 or more in the Valley a few days ago. LA is getting to be a kind of Phoenix West, which just set a record of 100+ degrees temps for 100 days in a row.

Wow, we're beachside in a bowl, a basin, with a breeze that swirls the particulate matter and smog, so we can't keep it up, but think of the views whenever it clears and the photo ops from Griffith Park Observatory and the hikes. Oh, the hiking! The trails make for nice photo ops with the latest iPone and its super digital camera and mic for recording everything for the cloud, AI, and whoever wants to review it. The fact of the matter is, when you arrive, we'll say: "Welcome to Southern California [now go home]." So if this becomes home, the laugh will be on us because you'll already be here. At least there are a lot of hidden Buddhist temples (List of Buddhist temples in the US).
(TheEarthMaster) Recent elevated earthquakes in SoCal is not a good sign
We just stumbled on one in the SGV City of El Monte (Spanish for "The Mountain," which is visible in the distance), a big Vietnamese one dedicated to Kwan Yin (Buddhism's Mother Mary figure), just like they love in Catholic French colonial Vietnam. It's bright and beautiful and on a tiny street near the intersection of Valley Blvd. between Garvey and Durfee. Keep going on Valley, turn right, and come upon a massive Theravada Thai Buddhist one, a hope, skit, and a hump from Hsi Lai, the largest (or second to BAUS in New York) Buddhist temple in the western hemisphere. They all make nice photo ops.
If Buddhism had "prayers," this could be one of them on the wisdom of loving-kindness.

If we wish to see things as they really are, we first need to purify the heart/mind like cleaning off a lens. How can we clearly see what is and is not if the instrument we're using is all dusty and smudged with smut?
What if there were an eightfold path (ashtanga) to samadhi and another to enlightenment? The first is Integral Yoga, and the second is the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path. Both work well simultaneously

Having wiped the lens, how do we discover the Buddha's timeless wisdom to navigate life's challenges? It begins by hearing. The ever hear the Dharma is a blessing. It is far more important to practice (to make more of the karma that enabled us to hear it in the first place), which begins by calm and mindfully (dispassionately observing what is, whatever it is) observing-without-reacting to everything around us.

When samadhi (stillness, unification of mind, superconsciousness) sets in, then the satipatthana or "Setting Up for the Four Foundations of Mindfulness" brings us to clear-seeing (vipassana).
Getting to calm is a field of endeavor (kammatthana) enough for most of us. Even relaxing is tough. But finding calm, there's every reason to keep going. Buddhism is the path of calm and insight. Insight, which is built on a foundation of samma-samadhi (right meditation), is what makes enlightenment possible.
Samadhi is not enlightenment though many mistake that initial bliss for spiritual liberation when there is so much more knowledge and freedom to come.

Magnitude 4.9 earthquake shakes Southern California
(KTLA 5) July 29, 2024: A magnitude 4.9 earthquake followed by several strong aftershocks were felt across Southern California early Monday afternoon. Vegan Deborah Marks was live in Burbank on KFI 640 AM (iheart.com) when it hit. As a lot of people know Los Angeles has a lot of smog due to its unique basin configuration, which has been holding in smoke since the time this was Tovaangar, the home of the original inhabitants, the Tongva tribe, now called the Kizh. In ancient times smoke from home fires used to create haze and be held in from onshore breezes and Santa Ana winds.
When people ask, "Why does LA have so much smog," even though it may be the foothills acting like a cup, people still answer, "So God can't see what they're doing down there." Now if the Earth is shaking, do Natives and others ask the same thing? "What gotten into the Great Spirit? We must reform ourselves to see a reformed world. The external very much reacts to the internal of a great number of us, a point which the Buddha repeatedly makes in the Agganna Sutta or the Discourse on Beginnings, a kind of Buddhist Genesis account. Mexico's deadly earthquake was its strongest in 100 years.
Across Mexico, people felt Thursday night's devastating earthquake in different ways.
In Mexico City, Avidan Lebenthal said his apartment building was “banging” on the building next door. He grabbed his passport and ran outside. Anne Sørensen said she got out of bed when she felt the trembles, only to fall over because the floor was shaking so hard.
Mexico is amazing and full of surprises.
Tania Miranda, also in the capital city, said it was an “apocalyptic experience.” That’s because in addition to the strong shaking, she saw green lights in the sky following the tremors. Other people also reported seeing the lights.
Explanations for what caused them vary from electromagnetic charges to something involving power plants and electrical cables. [No one in the mainstream media will speculate about the possibility of HAARP having anything to do with weather manipulation or strange electrical anomalies such as mysterious lights].

And Lee Burnette, in Huatulco, Oaxaca [pronounced WAH-hah-kah] -- one of the areas that experienced the brunt of the damage -- said he was walking home when the earthquake hit.
For more than a minute, he said a nearby hotel and radio tower swayed, glass shattered and road signs shook. He arrived home to find his mirrors, vases, and glasses had fallen and broken. The toilets were cracked and off their bases. Every couple of hours since the earthquake, he has felt strong aftershocks.
Just when the country was bracing for Hurricane Katia, and as other megastorms were charging across the Caribbean, Mexico was struck by one of its most powerful earthquakes on record.
The Mexican government said the earthquake, which it registered at magnitude of 8.2, was the strongest in the country in a century.
National news outlets reported the death toll rising above 60 by Friday afternoon, including one fatality in Guatemala, and 200 were injured.
The US Geological Survey put the earthquake at 8.1. [That doesn't sound very different. But the way seismometers are gauged a one point change makes it exponentially stronger.]
The hardest-hit spots in Mexico were in the country’s southern area, near the Guatemalan border. Officials in the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco have all reported widespread damage.
As many as 45 people were reported dead in Oaxaca, many of them in the Pacific coast town of Juchitán. Part of the town's City Hall collapsed, while some houses were reduced to rubble.
In Tabasco, at least two children were among the fatal victims, including one who died in a hospital when his ventilator shut off because the building lost power.
At least three deaths were also reported in the town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.
Various government agencies have issued advisories seeking help for the three states. Among the needs are bottled water, food, toilet paper, soap, and disposable utensils. Eleven states across the country closed schools to prepare for aftershocks and also help people get on their feet. There were almost 400 aftershocks, by Friday afternoon, according to El Universal newspaper.
Mexico City appeared to fare amazingly well [because it was centered out in the ocean where HAARP waves are being directed to generate or "steer" a hurricane], especially compared to the 8.1 magnitude earthquake here in 1985, which caused massive devastation and thousands of deaths.
Throughout much of Mexico City, life appeared to continue unabated in the morning, with little evidence of the quake the night before.
But the experience left emotional scars. Alicia Vera had just fallen asleep when she heard Mexico City’s seismic alarm go off. But she doubted whether an quake was really on the way because a false alarm had gone off earlier in the week.
When she saw her curtains swaying, she grabbed her shoes and her dog, and ran out into the middle of the street.
It was a scary experience, she said, made worse by the fact that she is from Miami, which is bracing for massive damage from [super-storm] Hurricane Irma.
“I’m already on edge,” Vera said.
