But many will choose the institution, as most of Tibet (a massive region a quarter to half the size of China) did in centuries past. But the real practice of Buddhism involves moving beyond comfortable institutions, rituals, and dogma and onto the mat for purification of heart/mind and view. That's when the real progress begins. Few are probably ready for that, so let's get back to Tibetan politics with the pope-king who is now just "pope" of one Tibetan school or sect, the Gelug Yellow Hats.

Manjushri (Sanskrit 𑀫𑀜𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀰𑁆𑀭𑀻, Romanized Mañjuśrī) is a bodhisattva who represents transcendental wisdom (prajñā) of the "Cosmic Buddhas" [like Vairocana] in Mahāyāna Buddhism.

The anattā doctrine taught by the historical Buddha is that neither within the bodily and mental phenomena of existence (the Five Aggregates clung to as self: form, feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness), nor outside of them, can there be found anything that in the ultimate sense can ever be regarded as a self or independently-existing real ego-entity, soul, self, or any other abiding essence, substance, or atman.

This is the central doctrine of Buddhism, without the understanding of which any real knowledge of Buddhism is altogether impossible.

It is the only really specific Buddhist doctrine, with which the entire structure of the Buddhist Teaching (Dharma, Dhamma) stands or falls.

All the remaining Buddhist doctrines might, more or less, be found in other philosophical systems or religions, but the anattā-doctrine is only clearly and unreservedly taught by the Buddha (or buddhas before him), wherefore the Buddha is known as the anattā-vādi, or "Teacher of Egolessness."

Whoever has not penetrated this impersonal characteristic of all existence and does not comprehend that in reality there exists only this continually self-consuming process of arising and passing bodily and mental phenomena, that there is no separate ego-entity within or without this process, that person will not be able to understand Buddhism, that is, the teaching of the Four Ennobling (Enlightening) Truths (sacca) in the correct light.

One will think that it is one's ego or personality that experiences suffering, one's person that performs good and harmful karma and will be reborn according to those actions, one's personality that will enter into nirvana, one's personality that practices the Ennobling Eightfold Path. More

VESAK (Pali Vesākha), also called Wesak, Vesaka, Buddha Jayanti [12], Buddha Purnima [13], Visak Bochea, and Buddha Day, is the most significant religious holiday on the Buddhist calendar.

According to American Theravada Buddhist and Theosophist Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907), it's a kind of "Buddhist Christmas" for celebrated around the world.

There is a "New Buddhism"

The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Pali maha-bodhi, "great awakening"), and final nirvana (parinibbana) of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni in Theravada Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Navayana [15].

The name Vesak is derived from the Pali term Vesākha (Sanskrit Vaiśākha) for the lunar month of Vaisakha, which is the month the Bodhisatta (Sanskrit Bodhisattva) was born [16].

In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the holiday is known by its Sanskrit name (Vaiśākha) and variations of it. East Asian traditions celebrate the Buddha's birthday, typically occurring around the traditional timing of Vesak.

POLYANDRY (Ancient Greek πολύ, polú, "many" + ἀνήρ, anḗr, "man") is a form of polygamy in which a female takes two or more husbands at the same time.

Polyandry is contrasted with polygyny, involving one male and two or more females. If a marriage involves a plural number of "husbands and wives" participants of each gender, then it can be called polygamy [1], group or conjoint marriage [2].

In its broadest use, polyandry refers to sexual relations with multiple males within or without marriage.

Of the 1,231 societies listed in the 1980 Ethnographic Atlas,

• 186 were found to be monogamous,
• 453 had occasional polygyny,
• 588 had more frequent polygyny, and
• 4 had polyandry [3].

Polyandry is more frequent (less rare) than this figure suggests because it considered only those examples found in the Himalayan Buddhist mountain region (8 societies).

Feminine female power!

More recent studies have found at least 4 other societies practicing polyandry [4]. Fraternal polyandry is practiced among Tibetans in Nepal and parts of China, in which two or more brothers are married to the same female (wife), with that wife having equal sexual access to them [5, 6].

It is associated with partible paternity, the cultural belief that a child can have more than one [legal] father [4].

Several ethnic groups practicing polyandry in India identify their customs with their descent from the female Draupadi, a central character of the Mahabharata (revered in Hinduism) who was married to five brothers, although local practices may not be fraternal themselves.

One husband, one wife? - How bad is a good marriage? Be honest, completely honest

WHY? Polyandry is believed to be more likely in societies with scarce environmental resources. It is believed to limit human population growth and enhance child survival [6, 7]. It is a rare form of marriage that exists among elite and peasant families [8].

For example, polyandry in the predominantly Buddhist Himalayan mountains is related to the scarcity of land. The marriage of all brothers in a family to the same wife allows family land to remain in the same family's hads undivided.

If every brother married separately and had children, family land would be split into unsustainably small plots.

In contrast, very poor persons who do not own land are less likely to practice polyandry in Buddhist India's Ladakh and Zanskar [6].

In Europe, the splitting up of land was prevented through the social practice of impartible inheritance. With most siblings disinherited, many of them became celibate monks and priests [9]. Buddhism seems to have had a better solution, though the vast majority of male and female Tibetan Buddhists at one time or other became Vajrayana monastics at least for some part of their lives. More

Tulku is a documentary film written and directed by Gesar Mukpo. It details the personal experiences of five young Western men who were identified in childhood as being tulkus, or "reincarnated Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist masters."

For over 700 years, tulkus have been sought out as highly revered leaders and teachers of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism.

Beginning in the 1970s, several tulkus have been identified as having incarnated in the West. These new, Western-born, very modern tulkus lead lives prone to East-West culture clash and identity confusion.

Background

Gesar Mukpo, who wrote and directed Tulku, was born in 1973, the son of world-renowned Tibetan Buddhist master [scandal ridden sex guru] Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and his [underage] British wife Diana.

At the age of 3, Mukpo was identified by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche as the reincarnation of the late Shechen Kongtrul Rinpoche (the Jamgon Kongtrul of Shechen), one of his own father's teachers in Tibet [2, 3].

Three-year-old Gesar Mukpo was then "enthroned" as a tulku in radical Sixties town Berkeley, California, across the Bay from San Francisco. More
