What's wrong with drinking alcohol?

(Typical Life Stories) The habit/addiction that took everything

Liquid ignorance tastes bad.
FIFTH PRECEPT
Surā meraya majja pamā daṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃ samā diyāmi, which means, "I undertake the training-precept to abstain from consuming intoxicants that may occasion heedlessness."

The fifth precept prohibits the use of intoxicants that occasion heedlessness such as alcohol, drugs, or other means. Its virtues are mindfulness and self-responsibility [12, 13] applied to food, work, behavior, and with regard to reality [132] and the true nature of life.

Awareness, meditation, and heedfulness can also be included here [125].

Let's drink this and start breaking other precepts.
The most famous Buddhist commentator in the Pali canon Buddhaghosa writes that whereas violating the first four precepts may be more or less blameworthy depending on the person or animal affected, the fifth precept is always "greatly blamable" because it hinders one from understanding the Buddha's Teachings and may lead one to "madness" [18], which is the karmic result in the future of indulging in alcohol now.

It's a natural product of rotten sugar.
In ancient China, Daoshi described alcohol as the "doorway to laxity and idleness" and as a cause of suffering. Nevertheless, he did describe extraordinary circumstances when drinking might be considered less bad than what it prevents. For example, there's the case of a queen who distracts the king using alcohol to prevent him from murdering.

However, Daoshi was strict in his interpretations. For example, he allowed medicinal use of alcohol only in extreme cases [152].

Early Chinese translations of the Three Baskets or Collections (the Tripitaka of Sutras, Disciplinary Code, and the Higher Doctrine) describe negative consequences for people breaking the rule on drinking, for themselves and their families.

The Chinese translation of the Upāsikaśila Sūtra, as well as the Pāli language version of the Sigālovāda Sutta, speak of terrible consequences from intoxication such as the
  • loss of wealth,
  • ill health,
  • a bad reputation,
  • being accused of misdeeds,
  • "stupidity" [in future rebirths],
  • culminating with rebirth in hell [18, 153].
I need a swig every night to be regular in my poo.
The Dīrghāgama adds to that that alcohol leads to quarreling, negative states of mind, and damage to one's intelligence.

The Mahāyāna Sanskrit version of the Net of All-Embracing Views Discourse (Brahmajāla Sūtra) [Note 6] describes the dangers of alcohol in very strong terms, including the crime of selling alcohol [154], which is listed among one of the forms of wrong livelihood proscribed in the Noble Eightfold Path.

Similar arguments against alcohol are found in Nāgārjuna's writings [155]. A strict interpretation on the prohibition of alcohol consumption in Buddhism can be supported by the Upāli Sūtra's statement that a disciple of the Buddha should avoid drinking alcohol "even [so much as] a drop on the point of a blade of grass."

However, in the writing of some Abhidharma commentators, alcohol consumption was condemned depending on the intention with which it was consumed. For example, an intention that was not condemned was taking alcohol in a tiny amount as a form of medicine [156] or because it is used in the extraction and preservation of plant medicines (syrups, potions, decoctions, concoctions, etc.)

Sanity and sobriety in practice
A little "water of life" never hurt nobody. *Burp*
The fifth precept against consuming alcohol is regarded as extremely important because drinking alcohol leads to lack of self-control and sluggishness [72, 157], which is extremely likely to lead to breaking the other precepts [18] that one would normally if sober avoid breaking.

In Spiro's field studies, violating the fifth precept was seen as the worst of all the five precepts by half of the monks interviewed, citing the harmful consequences [18].

Nevertheless, in practice abstention from alcohol is often disregarded by lay people [158]. In Theravada Buddhist Thailand, drinking alcohol is fairly common, even to the point of drunkenness [159].

Do all bad things as "crazy wisdom," Dummies!
Among Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists, drinking beer is common, partly because it is very weak and only slightly alcoholic [155].

Medicinal use of alcohol is generally not frowned upon [145], and in some countries like Thailand and Laos, smoking tobacco is usually not regarded as a violation of the precept to avoid intoxicants.

Thai and Laotian Buddhist monks have been known to smoke as part of their culture, but monks who have received more training in Buddhism are far less likely to smoke [43, 160].

Let's live it up, steal, and break things. Woo-hoo!
On a similar note, as of the year 2000, no Buddhist country prohibited the sale or consumption of alcohol, though in Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist revivalists unsuccessfully attempted to become prohibitionist by getting full prohibition passed in 1956 [43].

Moreover, pre-communist Tibet used to prohibit smoking in some areas of the capital, Lhasa. Monks were prohibited from smoking, and the import of tobacco was banned [43].

Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh included even mindful consumption in this precept, which consists of unhealthy food, unhealthy entertainment, and unhealthy conversations, among others [137, 161]. More

The End Times? The World is Ending!

Buddha's Wisdom

There's an orange clown on the TV every day!
Will the world end? How will the world end? When will the world end? Why will the world end? Questions, questions. Of course, the world will end. Not any time soon, but never mind about that. It's always ending, constantly hurtling towards destruction. "Change is the only constant," some wise person once said. That person was talking about what the Buddha called anicca. We translate this as "impermanence," but that's very limited and misleading. We prefer flux, dissolution, or radical impermanence, though "change" also works.

The idea is that, that something will change is no kind of message to the world. Of course, things are impermanent. We all know that. Only a child would think things are going to stay the same. (Guilty! And we're old enough to know better). It might be better to investigate how things are going to change because that sort of explains the why. The when is easy! Right now. Now. The eternal now. When is a mountainside not crumbling? Even as geological forces send it up, it is already disintegrating. When aren't human cells dying? They are always dispatching and falling off. That's what it means to have a body, though we don't much notice, know, or want to know.

How are things changing? Little by little until they give way to a noticeable amount. The more closely we investigate and notice, the more and more we become aware of when and how this is happening. It can become so upsetting that we stop clinging. Why, being ourselves impermanent, would we chase and cling to impermanent things?

It's all in the mind?

The Fire Sermon
Once upon a time, the Buddha was walking along the river and he came upon 1,000 fire worshippers with their matted locks or jatas, wandering ascetics in search of truth. They saw him and were moved by his gravitas, charisma, and appearance. He himself was a wandering ascetic but a Scythian (Shakyian) from the West, serene, and delightful to look upon. What could he possibly have to say about ultimate truth? See "The Fire Sermon."

1-year anniversary of LA Fires (1/7)

First anniversary commemoration of the Eaton Fire starts at 4:30 pm, Wednesday eve.
.
Firestorm: The Great Los Angeles Fires and America’s New Age of Disaster

Firestorm (Jacob Soboroff)
This hardcover -- released January 6, 2026 -- by victim and author Jacob Soboroff has 3.0 out of 5 stars (with 4 reviews) yet is somehow already a #1 Best Seller in Natural Disasters on Amazon.

Why? [It is] A "gripping, unshakeable firsthand account" (San Francisco Chronicle) of the firestorm that consumed Los Angeles, from the MS NOW reporter and New York Times bestselling author of Separated, who covered the fires on the ground as an LA native.

"Read[s] like a sci-fi thriller.” — Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles reporter Jacob Soboroff
[One year ago,] on the morning of January 7, 2025, a message pinged the phone of Jacob Soboroff, a national reporter for MS NOW. “Big Palisades fire. We are evacuating,” his brother texted within minutes of the blaze engulfing the hillside behind the home where he and his pregnant wife were living.

“Really bad.” An attached photo showed a huge black plume rising from behind the house, an umbrella of smoke towering over everything they owned. Jacob rushed to the office of the bureau chief. “I should go. I grew up in the Palisades.”

Pacific Palisades: 'They let us burn!' protest

Grocery Outlet of Altadena has been a hub for events since the Eaton Fire
Future PP Mayor Spencer Pratt
Soon he was on the front line of the blaze—his first live report of what would turn out to be weeks covering unimaginable destruction, from both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, in Altadena.

In the days to come, Soboroff appeared across the networks of NBC News as Los Angeles was ablaze, met with displaced residents and workers, and pressed California Gov. Gavin Newsom in an interview on Meet the Press.

But no story Soboroff has covered at home or abroad—the trauma of family separation at the border, the displacement of [NATO's] war in Ukraine, the [CIA's] collapse of order in Haiti—could have prepared him for reporting live as the hallmarks of his childhood were engulfed in flames around him while his hometown burned to the ground.

But for Soboroff, questions remained after the fires were controlled:
  • What had he just witnessed?
  • How could it have happened?
  • Is it inevitable something like it will happen again?

This photo is very misleading because two LA fire departments stood down and let it burn.
.
New date and location: Jan 11, 2026
This set Soboroff off on months of reporting—with firefighters, fire victims, political leaders, academics, earth scientists, wildlife biologists, meteorologists, and more—that made him keenly aware of how the misfortune of seeing his past carbonize was also a form of time travel into the dystopian world his children will inhabit.

Plans changed. See correct info above.
This is because the 2025 LA Fires were not an isolated tragedy, but rather they are a harbinger—"the fire of the future," in the words of one senior emergency—management official.

Firestorm is the story of the costliest wildfire in American history, the people it affected, and the deeply personal connection to one journalist covering it.

Eaton Fire burned LA foothills
It is a love letter to Los Angeles, a yearning to understand the fires, and why America’s new age of disaster we are living through portends that—without a reckoning of how Los Angeles burned—there is more yet, and worse, to come. More

Arrest made in Pacific Palisades Fire, LA

Jonathan Rinderknech arrested: ChatGPT, French rap, and Uber: Palisades Fire suspect's trail
.
Neither of these suspects is Jon Rinderknech
The Palisades Fire was one of two major infernos that hit Los Angeles on Oct. 7, 2025. The other was the Eaton Fire in the foothills of Altadena, which was caused by Edison, likely a negligent utility that left its inoperable transmission tower standing for decades and uncared for, making it a known fire hazard, according to attorney Mikal Watts (lafirejustice.com). Until now the means by which the historic winds that day managed to burn down the ritzy coastal areas of Los Angeles have been debated. The fire he set, the Lachman Fire, has been blamed on homeless individuals and fireworks. But authorities are now saying Jonathan Rinderknech, 29, a former Palisades resident now living in Florida, committed arson a week earlier and that those flames were never fully extinguished, coming to life with the strong winds.

Hindu India: The Vagina Festival (video)

The Vagina Festival, Kamakhya Temple

The Kamakhya Temple at Nilachal hills in Guwahati, Assam, Northeastern India, is one of the oldest and most revered centers of Tantric practice [3] dedicated to the Goddess Kamakhya. This Hindu temple is the center of the Kulachara Tantra Marga and the site of the Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival that celebrates the menstruation of the goddess [4]. More
  • Trans folks (pandakas) are everywhere aggressively panhandling, demanding money (baksheesh). It's extortion and they will repeatedly curse the person who dares to deny them and may even get violent. It's almost as bad as India's "Eunuch Festival," but eunuch is the wrong word for the inebriated revelries (Bacchanalia/Saturnalia) that is rumored to go on in LGBTQI+, India according to the Indian press.

The Goddess of Desire (Kama)
American Tori Amos films music video for her song "God" about God in Indian Temple of the Rats

Goddess of Desire Kamakhya
Kāmākhyā, a mother goddess [1], is a Shakta Tantric deity. Considered the embodiment of Kama (sensual desire), she is regarded as the Hindu "goddess of desire" [2]. Her abode is Kamakhya Temple located in the Kamarupa region of Assam, India [3][4]. Originally a Kirata goddess, residing on the Nilachal Hills across the banks of the Brahmaputra River, west of Guwahati in the 10th-11th century temple rebuilt in 1565 CE [5], she is worshiped in a non-iconic and un-anthropomorphic form of a perpetually wet stone shaped as a yoni (womb or vagina) fed by a perennial stream [6]. Filthy NUDITY found in Bay Area mural

Oakland mural depicting Ohlone tribe interaction could be painted over | KTVU
Big Brother knows best. Since 1984.
(KTVU FOX 2 San Francisco) The property manager has told tenants it plans to paint over a mural at 41st Street and Piedmont Avenue depicting interaction between Ohlone Native Americans and Spanish settlers. Critics of the artwork point to nudity and alleged insensitivity in the mural.
His nudity is historically accurate, but is that any reason to be naked?! Yes, we think it's a great reason. The mural depicts the Catholic missionaries coming to enslave, rape, and ethnically cleanse the Natives from the land. No one wants to see facts like that where schoolkids might see it and start asking questions that buck the system.
