The End Times? The World is Ending!

Will the world end? How will the world end? When will the world end? Why will the world end? Questions, questions. Of course, the world will end. Not any time soon, but never mind about that. It's always ending, constantly hurtling towards destruction. "Change is the only constant," some wise person once said. That person was talking about what the Buddha called anicca. We translate this as "impermanence," but that's very limited and misleading. We prefer flux, dissolution, or radical impermanence, though "change" also works.

The idea is that, that something will change is no kind of message to the world. Of course, things are impermanent. We all know that. Only a child would think things are going to stay the same. (Guilty! And we're old enough to know better). It might be better to investigate how things are going to change because that sort of explains the why. The when is easy! Right now. Now. The eternal now. When is a mountainside not crumbling? Even as geological forces send it up, it is already disintegrating. When aren't human cells dying? They are always dispatching and falling off. That's what it means to have a body, though we don't much notice, know, or want to know.

How are things changing? Little by little until they give way to a noticeable amount. The more closely we investigate and notice, the more and more we become aware of when and how this is happening. It can become so upsetting that we stop clinging. Why, being ourselves impermanent, would we chase and cling to impermanent things?

British couple travel to SoCal 'paradise'

What is "Juneteenth"?

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the US celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the ending of legal slavery in the United States.

The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth," referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War [8, 9].

In the Civil War period, slavery was brought to an end in various areas of the United States of America at different times. Many enslaved Blacks in the South escaped, demanded wages, stopped work, or even took up arms against the Confederacy of slave states.

In January 1865, the U.S. Congress finally proposed the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution for the national abolition of slavery.

By June 1865, almost all enslaved persons had been freed by the victorious Union Army or by state abolition laws. When the national abolition amendment was ratified in December, the remaining enslaved people in Delaware and in Kentucky were freed.

Early Juneteenth celebrations date back to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. They spread across the South among newly freed African-Americans and their descendants and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival.

One Day, Everyone Will Have

Participants in the Great Migration brought these celebrations to the rest of the country. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, these celebrations were eclipsed by the nonviolent determination to achieve civil rights but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African-American freedom and African-American arts.

Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938, and by legislation in 1979, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia has formally recognized the holiday in some way.

Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico [10].

250th anniversary of Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech

(Historic St. John's Church) Ten years ago on March 23, 2015: RICHMOND. On March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia, Patrick Henry delivered his Liberty or Death speech at the 2nd Virginia Convention.

Among the 120 delegates in attendance were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Nelson, Robert Carter Nicholas, and other.

Henry was a superb orator who spoke extemporaneously. One aspect of Henry’s genius was that he was able to take ideas and phrases that were part of the intellectual life of the colonies and put them into eloquent words and persuasive arguments. There is no written record of this speech. It was not until William Wirt, Henry’s first biographer, published Sketches of the Life and Character of Patrick Henry in 1817 that a reconstruction of the speech was printed.

Hindus (Vedic Brahmins) do not understand what Buddhism means by moksha (liberation, freedom). By shunyata, or "emptiness," is not meant "nothing." What is meant is no self, that ultimately there is no separate "self." This can mean self is all-one with everything, indistinguishable from the environment, but the point is that it means everything is impersonal. It is not-self. There is no ego. The personality is an impermanent flux.

Based on the recollections of men who had been present when the speech was made, the main source was a lengthy letter that St. George Tucker wrote relating his memories of the speech. Some scholars attribute the version of the speech commonly known to Tucker, but there are other firsthand accounts that characterize Henry’s speech in a similar manner, giving weight to Tucker’s memories of the words that Henry spoke.

James Parker, a Norfolk merchant who talked with delegates after the convention, wrote a letter on April 6, 1775, that describes Henry’s speech as “infamously insolent” and repeats that

• Henry referred to the king as “a tyrant, a fool, a puppet, and a tool to the ministry,
• said there was now no Englishmen, no Scots, no Britons, but a set of wretches sunk in luxury,
• they had lost their natural courage and
• [were] unable to look the brave Americans in the face.”

Edmund Randolph, in a history of Virginia that he wrote in the early 19th century, recalled that Henry “with indignation ridiculed the idea of peace ‘when there is no peace.’”

The language reflected in these descriptions of Henry’s speech is similar to that which William Wirt included in his reconstruction. Henry’s speech was powerful and carried the resolutions in a close vote.

The convention journal does not record the actual vote, but Parker wrote that the resolution was “carried by a Majority of 65 to 60.”

The convention records indicate that only 118 delegates were likely present that day. The vote was close, and the resolution passed by a narrow margin.

It is snowing in Florida, North America's dangling participle, dripping into Trump's Gulf of Mexico America. This used to be the Deep South. (CBS Miami) A major winter storm is moving into northern Florida on Tuesday, bringing what will potentially be record-breaking snowfall totals.

Scientists baffled after finding fossilized frozen forest under ice patches on Beartooth Plateau

Scientists were recently left stunned when they unveiled the remains of a 6,000-year-old forest on the Beartooth Plateau.

The forest was buried in ice and came to the surface because of warming, Earth.com stated. Researchers believe that the forest retreated under ice 5,500 years ago due to a change in solar radiation and volcanic cooling which followed the phenomenon. Findings regarding the long-buried forest have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

On examination, the fossils were identified to be the remnants of a mature white bark pine forest. As per experts, the forest was once situated at an elevation of 10,000 feet.

Researchers cited the forest as an example of how ecosystems transform due to alterations in the atmosphere. “This is pretty dramatic evidence of ecosystem change due to temperature warming.

It’s an amazing story of how dynamic these systems are,” said David McWethy, one of the study’s authors and an associate professor at Michigan State University's (MSU’s) Department of Earth Sciences. More

'Crazy to see': Parts of Gulf Coast get first-ever blizzard warning

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Gulf of Mexico) − Portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast saw a first-ever blizzard warning, a wide swath of the Deep South was targeted by a major winter storm, and brutal cold temperatures gripped much of the nation today (Jan. 21, 2025) as the U.S. grappled with wild winter weather.

Stacey Denson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, told USA TODAY the blizzard warning was a first for Louisiana. A blizzard warning means frequent wind gusts to 35 MPH and snow reducing visibilities to 1/4 mile or less is expected.

"It was pretty crazy to see," Denson said. "It is actually improving a bit, but we had whiteout conditions." More

The Zen Monastic Experience (Robert E. Buswell)

One of the most striking features of Buddhism, which began in Central Asia and proto-India, are the architectural features known as stupas -- which bear a striking similarity to the much older tradition the Buddha was following from Central and North Asia: tumuli, kurgans, barrows, burial mounds. Where they are place, what is put in them, and what they were used for is mysterious.

Long ago, our UCLA Professor of Buddhism Dr. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. told the class an amazing story. He had been a Zen monk in Korea (at Songgwang-sa, Cholla Namdo), living an austere life, and a Theravada Thai Buddhist monk in Thailand then disrobed and went on to become a doctoral student and professor. He detailed the long hours of meditation sesshins, how little they ate, how they slept on straw mats in the hall, which were then rolled up for a day of sitting zazen. It was the real thing, not our silly notions of Zen as wandering about navel gazing and pondering koans. One day he was surprised that to break the monotony of this season of intensive practice, when half of the monks went on extra duty cooking, warming, cleaning, and providing support, and the other half did nothing but meditate. Perhaps not understanding Korean as fluidly as he would go on to do, the monks were laughing -- if memory serves, and memory of old college lectures is not the most reliable source of information -- as they attempted to stick a straw from the broom in his scalp. Why? There was nowhere for it to go. He tried many times. They all smiled or laughed.

• Zen austerities during sesshin included these things that left us rapt in class, particularly one aspiring Angeleno wanting nothing more than to move to India and become an extreme ascetic to gain the path and win enlightenment right away:
• They would wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 in morning
• Go to a water pump, dip two fingers in salt to brush their teeth
• Go sit on reed mats and stiff cushions for the morning sit
• Eat a meal of boiled rice, daikon radish they grew, a slice of ginger, and if they were lucky a sprinkle of sesame seed
• Then go to meditate more, for 18 hours a day
• If someone started to nod off, the Zen master might bring out swords for meditators to lean their chins on (and no one would ever fall asleep)
• It was cold outside, and the zendo was warmed from the wooden floor by some creative technology from the kitchen or furnace room circulating heat under the boards.
• Sesshin is, of course, an intensive, so it wasn't always like this. During the rest of the year they might chop wood, carry water, grow vegetables (mainly daikon), go on alms, rake leaves, and be mindful all day long.
• (Prof. Buswell's great insight was that the Zen monastic experience is not a bunch of iconoclastic Beat poets sitting around, drinking tea, puffing pipes, writing haiku, pondering koans, and playing the flute under cherry blossom trees. They were all very learned in the texts and other studies and were in this monastery to practice beyond words. As Americans we think Zen is the easiest of all the Buddhisms because it's just "whatever," anything we want it to be. But that is not how it is in serious Asia, where this tradition is the way of "meditation" (which is what jhana, dhyana, Chan, and Zen, or Seon in Korean, mean). So with all this meditating, it's no wonder one would be more sensitive to subtle energies and architectural emanations:

When they went on their walking tour, they were headed for a stupa (솔도파, soldopha, a stone burial mound housing the Buddha's and other enlightened individuals' sacred relics or sharira). When they arrived, he reported that meditation went much better, more plunging into "Zen," which literally means jhana or "meditative absorption." His meditation was disturbed when the monks gathered around him, handed him the straw, and now it went into a pore in his scalp. The pore opened large enough to stand the straw on end. He was surprised as there had been no way to do it, to stand it, previously. The class asked, "Why, what changed, what does it mean?"

• Discussing this story just now, it occurs that the "pore opening" was an assumption. The straw may have stood on end all by itself without sitting into an enlarged pore. It was just necessary, hearing the story, to imagine that it went into a little hole that opened like a third eye. But imagine an electrified field buzzing with static cling raising the straw. He didn't seem to know other than it was just a tiny paranormal proof that meditation near these ancient Buddhist stone structures is different. Being near sharira (remains, ashes, colorful silica, glassy beads, gems from the sacred pyre) is different, and that's why they are honored. Maybe stupas (circumambulation mounds) are built on ley lines, over vortices, near portals? Maybe building them creates a portal or energy anomaly?

Sure, it could have been psychosomatic, but that seems unlikely since he didn't know what the straw was meant to do or represent in the first place. Imagine, as a hypothetical example, that it is impossible for you to get into full lotus. You just can't, never have been to from too much sitting in chairs and not doing yoga. Then you go to a stupa and suddenly slip into the posture without much effort. What changed? You weren't trying to get into it. It just came naturally. These are trivial things, but they're concrete.

Those Korean Zen Buddhist monks knew meditation would be different around the kurgan/stupa. Surely anyone who hangs around these ancient structures will eventually experience something odd. We dash in during the day, laughing and horsing around with friends, body hair rise and tingle, we giggle, run out, take a picture, and wonder why and how they were built. And we think we know the first thing about them? It's like going to Lake Titicaca to the portal rock with a doorframe carved in it for no apparent reason. Slapping the rock, taking a picture, and going away we think we know anything about what that place can do and why it was built.
