America’s firearm culture

Some whites sold us guns, and some shot us.

Unique experiences in our heritage have decisively influenced American culture.

As Europeans encountering Native Americans and wiping them out to make room for our settler occupier colonial project, our enslavement of Natives and Blacks, the civil war, and our ascent as the world’s first hyper-superpower. (Move over, England and Rome).

We played with guns as kids, and now we play with them for real aimed at Palestinians.

However, even this militarized history is not enough to explain why Americans suffer from the worst gun violence in the industrialized world.

Other settler colonial projects have as many guns per capita (such as our neighbor to the north) with only a fraction of the gun crime.

As of 2014, for every 100 Americans there are a staggering 90 privately owned guns. It's worse now.

The mass proliferation of firearms exercises a tyrannical hold over the American imagination.

It is both a cause and an effect of the many social problems afflicting the nation. With the country in political and ideological gridlock (and add to the mix the vested interests and lobbies with too much business to lose like the NRA or National Rifle Association), how can there be any resolution to the mass proliferation of firearms and US gun crimes?

While wars of self-defense and geopolitical deceit are a reality of samsara, it is basically impossible for Buddhism to defend the arms trade in any form.

The proliferation of weapons is antithetical to religions that promote peace. Armed militia-like groups are increasingly adding a new layer of tension to public protests in the United States. Civilian guns can't oppose military weapons

HBO host Bill Maher had MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell as one of his guests on "Real Time" Friday night.
 
The two were adamant that the 2nd Amendment cannot protect patriotic citizens from tyranny by their own government (and that such a conversation shouldn't even really be happening in this age). [Maybe citizens should just roll over as happened in Nazi Germany and other totalitarian states where gun confiscation precedes marshal law.

 

After pointing out the poll where 44% of Republicans said an armed revolution might be necessary in order to protect liberties in the next few years, compared to 18% of Democrats [no mention of radicals, progressives, Greens, Libertarians, and independents], Maher said:

"Can we get to, first of all, how ridiculous it is for people to think that the Second Amendment protects them from tyranny. When Hegseth said he should make his case to the rebels in Syria, O'Donnell countered: "These nuts are not talking about Syria.

BANGKOK, Thailand -- A Burmese government crackdown on powerful ethnic militias that have challenged its rule for more than 60 years has driven 10,000 refugees into neighboring China, prompting a rare rebuke from Chinese authorities, the Burmese military dictatorship's key allies.

(WQ editorial) The father of Burma's dictator, General Than Shwe, is Chinese. China is the junta's principal enabler purchasing timber, minerals, and defending it in the UN. The countries share a border, which leads to illegal trade sideskirting sanctions.

The refugees fled over the border into China's Yunnan province in the past few days after fighting erupted between Burmese government troops and ethnic militia fighters from the Kokang region of the nation also known as Myanmar.

China called on the Burmese authorities to "properly handle domestic problems and maintain stability in the China-Myanmar border region," according to a statement from Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu. "We also urge Myanmar to protect the security and legal rights of Chinese citizens in Myanmar."

China has been balancing support for the Burmese government with backing for the armed ethnic groups that occupy much of the Burmese side of the border. The border regions are heavily influenced by China, with many Chinese businesses taking advantage of the trade in gems, timber and jade. More>>
