Scary stories: Nun’s letter from the Devil
A Possessed Nun’s Letter from the Devil
(BuzzFeed Unsolved Network, July 11, 2021) A tortured Italian Catholic nun in an isolated nunnery pens a letter in a cryptic unknown language that would remain a mystery for over three centuries -- but has now been deciphered -- written by the Christian Devil.
There are many maras and yakkhas (obstructing spirits and shapeshifting ogres in our world, according to Buddhist cosmology. So possession is possible, even if the details differ between traditions. Many are the unseen beings, and the many schools of Buddhism are aware of them. Stories hewing closest to what the historical Buddha taught are found in a collect of "Ghost Stories" called the Petavatthu. Be good because the petas, the departed, regret the karmic trouble their bad deeds got them in seems to be the message of this text collection. There are corollary "angelic" texts about the good karmic deeds that resulted in fortunate rebirths among the devas (lit. "shining ones").
