• In Buddhism a "goblin," "troll," or "gnome" (Sanskrit kumbhāṇḍa, Pali kumbhaṇḍa) is a dwarfish, misshapen being or spirit, among the lesser creatures of Buddhist cosmology and mythology. The term is a dialectal form for "gourd," which they resemble due to having big stomachs and/or testes. The name can also be interpreted as "pot-egg" since "egg" (aṇḍa) is a common euphemism for "testicle."

  Kumbhāṇḍas are imagined as having testicles "as big as pots." This term and yakṣa (Yeti, Bigfoot, ape man, rakshasa) are sometimes used for the same person. Yakṣa in these cases is the more general term, including a variety of subhuman beings. Kumbhāṇḍas are classified among a set of beings, subjects of one of the Four Great Sky Kings, Maharaja Virūḍhaka, Guardian of the South. One of their chieftains is named Kumbhīra.
