Our favorite new movie: "BLOCKERS" (video)

Crystal Quintero, Ananda M., Dhr. Seven (eds.) Wisdom Quarterly; FilmWeek (SCPR); Universal

Headless breasty chicken or exploited girl?
Blockers (Rotten Tomatoes) comes out today, a controversial film about female sexual agency. These crazy girls are trying to get laid...but not if their parents can stop them. Enter, male chicken blockers, the hair pulling parents to these rambunctious youngsters. It's not easy raising kids, and it's not easy dealing with parents. We were all kids, many of us will be parents, so whose side will we take? Let's watch. Will it be a summer blockbuster in the spring or a premature spring break classic coming too soon to get enough adolescents [donkeys] in cinema seats?

Losing my virginity: Blockers teen sex romp movie clips (2018)

C Blockers
Teen sex sells tix.
(Universal Pictures) Blockers arrives in theaters on Friday, April 6, 2018. Website: blockersmovie.com. When three parents stumble upon their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity at prom, they launch a covert one-night operation to stop the teens from sealing the deal.

I directed this $exploitation.
Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad), John Cena (Trainwreck, Sisters), and Leslie Mann (The Other Woman, This Is 40) star in Blockers, the directorial debut of Kay Cannon (writer of the Pitch Perfect series).

This is a comedy about sexual misconduct, so calm down. It's not like it's killing...unless someone gets pregnant and ends up committing abortion, which is murder (thought the Morning After pill may or may not be, depending on how it really works. Look into that detail, which is not on the label, before use or risk becoming a manslaughterer, which is terrible karma). Blockers (IMDb)

  • REVIEW: FilmWeek (4/6/18): A Quiet Place, Blockers, Chappaquiddick, 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick's [I helped fake the U.S. moon landing] 2001: A Space Odyssey
Produced by [men like] Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver, under their Point Grey Pictures banner (Neighbors, This Is the End), alongside Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar series) and DMG Entertainment’s Chris Fenton (47 Ronin). Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joseph Drake (Don’t Breathe, Juno) executive produce with Chris Cowles (Collide) of DMG and Josh Fagen, Dave Stassen, and Jonathan McCoy. The film is written by brothers Brian and Jim Kehoe, Hurwitz and Schlossberg, and Eben Russell.

Sex? Maybe. Contraception? YES!
When my parents said, "We want to talk to you about sex," I answered, "Sure, what do you guys want to know?" thinking they had to know that I knew more about the subject than they probably did. They were mad and shamed me. We never talked about it again. :/

The surprising history of "Caucasian" (video)

Crystal Quintero, Ashley Wells, Pat Macpherson, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly; MTV News; FOM
(MTV News, Decoded April 27, 2016) The Surprisingly Racist History of the Term Caucasian

"Caucasian"?
Wisdom Quarterly (OPINION)
MTV NewsFacts presented in a fresh way -- concise, to the point, building up to support the thesis, exquisite! And who knew, right? Actually, readers may know this from a recent post about where the people Europeans enslaved in America came from.

No, it's not Africa like we're all taught. Slaves came from America! Wow, they enslaved and raped mated with the natives, some of whom were black, all of which were called the "copper colored" races. America was the land of "reds" and "blacks."

Latin-American singer Christina Aguilera
See Dr. Joy DeGruy, who goes much deeper into the social construction of the idea of "white" as one race, which originally kept out the Irish, some of the lightest skinned people on the planet. It's amazing; there was no thinking, "We're all 'white'."

Now everyone in the U.S. and Europe takes it for granted, unless you're Latino/a. Then you can be as "white" as Christina Aguilera or Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, but have a drop of Spanish blood (which is all European and not at all native) or a Spanish surname and you're "brown."

Latin-American Wonder Woman
Of course, our country suffers from more than just prejudice, racism, and implicit bias. We have colorism or shadism: the darker your skin, the worse treatment you get.

Who knew MTV (pronounced eMpTyV) was still around or ever doing anything good? We hear they want to bring music videos back, but that's just a rumor. It didn't pay enough the first time. Happy College Signing Day.
A Natural Man in Court
Why was the judge so fearful? Because she understood the archaic language he was speaking as it pertains to laws still on the books the court system has done everything it can to circumvent by tacit agreement as it forces and dupes us into signing away our natural rights. We cannot emphasize the importance and significance of what this man accomplished on camera which the modern legal system wishes no one would ever know about.

Britney & Buddhist Celebrities

Coming back is hard to do
Britney Spears' concert goes up in smoke, and Lindsay Lohan nurses her broken heart and career.

Top 10 Celebrity Buddhists (Wildmind.org)

When this list came together it seemed little more than a trivial distraction from all the news about disastrous wars, sordid economic-political scandals, and deep philosophical questions. But digging more deeply through the Web, there was inspiration. Reading about the practice of famous Buddhists, some of whom have had their trials, there is something to learn, be entertained and inspired by Wildmind’s Top 10 List of Celebrity Buddhists.

The criteria were simple. To be a Celebrity Buddhist a nominee has to be alive, a celebrity, and — wait for it — a Buddhist. The voting process was simplicity itself: counting the hits returned for an exact Google search on each name.

It’s not always easy working out if a celebrity Buddhist is actually a Buddhist. Lots of Websites say Keanu and Jennifer Lopez are practicing Buddhists. But the truth is far harder to pin down. A celebrity is a Buddhist only if s/he has said so. In fact some much lauded “celebrity Buddhists” have explicitly said that they are not Buddhist practitioners (e.g., Uma Thurman, “When asked if I consider myself Buddhist, the answer is, Not really,” and Keanu Reeves, “I’m not Buddhist.”)

Joining Keanu and J-Lo on the not-really-a-Buddhist list were martial arts actor Jackie Chan, and rocker/poet Patti Smith. Conversely, there are some serious practitioners whose celebrity status (as measured by a lack of Google hits) were avant-garde musician Laurie Anderson (1,110,000 hits), jazzman Wayne Shorter (1,100,000 hits), and REM frontman Michael Stipe (813,000 hits). So here they are in reverse order (with their hit totals):

  1. Aung San Suu Kyi (1,170,000 hits)
  2. Steven Seagal (1,340,000)
  3. Kate Bosworth (1,390,000)
  4. Richard Gere (1,560,000)
  5. Herbie Hancock (1,590,000)
  6. Leonard Cohen (1,620,000)
  7. The Dalai Lama (1,640,000)
  8. Tina Turner (1,710,000)
  9. Orlando Bloom (3,710,000)
