Sakdiyah Ma'ruf — Islamic Indonesia's first female Muslim comedian — doesn't always get a good reaction to her comedy, to say the least. She's been harassed and threatened by religious extremist groups and accused of betraying Islam, but for her it's a important way to speak out that makes her feel alive.

"I always knew that I need to say something about my experiences growing up, about the experiences of women in my community."

Maybe it's time to rise up for our rights?

As religious extremism increases in Indonesia, Sakdiyah wants to foster understanding and break down barriers: "I can open this place of play for people to think about their own prejudices, about the life of Muslims."

"With comedy I really feel alive. You can come from a completely different background. But if we can share similar ideas, concerns, anxieties, pain...then you can connect to them in a more meaningful way."

The full moon day of May marks the traditional anniversary of three major events in the Buddha's life, and Buddhists celebrate it worldwide as the most significant holiday on the calendar of observances.

Some call it "Buddhist Christmas" as it commemorates the Buddha's birth somewhere northwest of India 26 or more centuries ago. But his birthday is only important because of something that happened 35 years later.

Now in the Buddhist-year 2558, families gather, children and elders dress in all white. Flowers flood shrines. Candles glisten, incense smoke permeates the air with many perfumes. There are devotional activities, recitations, meditations, and eight precept observances.

After all, what we are really celebrating is Prince Siddhartha's renunciation and conquest of suffering, the enlightenment (mahabodhi) and glimpsing nirvana.

People still become enlightened, still glimpse the timeless bliss of nirvana, but what does not happen is the arising of a world teacher, a samma-sam-buddha, a "perfectly and fully enlightened teacher" of the Path to Enlightenment, replete with mental and linguistic abilities that make possible the establishing of the Dharma in the world-system again.

 

Overcoming Mara's army, tide of death

Such a person will come -- far in the future when the Dharma has disappeared and the world is rapidly decaying. "But the world is rapidly decaying right now!" some say. It will get even worse before it turns around. Being cyclical in nature, it always turns around. And that goes not only for this plane of existence -- this Human Realm which extends far off the planet to include other planets that other "humans" inhabit.

 

On Earth we are earthlings and unique for that, but among humans we are only a part of the puzzle of which the class is composed. We are fortunate beyond belief that it was here that Siddhartha Gautama, the Shakyan prince, heir of a human kingdom (likely in modern A5fghanistan beyond the area and territories that would have been considered "India," as if India were a country then) practiced here, became enlightened here, and established the Dharma here for the benefit of devas and humans, and other living beings.

Other living beings? Our scientific Western education tells us we are the only ones who exist. We very quickly forget the other animals that far outnumber us on this planet. We are not allowed to seriously entertain talk of ghosts, the dead, shapeshifting spirits, divinities, titans, gnomes, avians, reptilians, poltergeists, sylphs, goblins, ogres, or maras (spiritual killers). They are well remembered in our histories, our cosmologies, and our mythologies. And even when scientists study them, all that happens is that those "scientists" lose the label. They have stepped out of bounds of what the gatekeepers will allow. So when will UFOs be real? When academics, approved scientists, and government officials give us permission to believe our eyes -- and not a moment sooner! So look down, bow your heads, brothers and sisters, a raise a mighty voice unto the Judeo-Christian "lord," the approved God in capitalism, in whom we trust, with obedience and discipline for all. The priests in white lab coats approve of some gods, not others.

And to this day after 45 years of the Buddha's teaching, the Dharma survives -- fragmented, obscured, and falling but nevertheless still sufficient that some attain the knowing-and-seeing the Awakened One intended when he taught others to awaken.

Vesak, named after the Indian lunar calendar month Vesakha, marks the birth, enlightenment, and final nirvana of the Buddha. These events took place years apart on the full moon day of that month.

Recent earthquakes in the area have stirred up memories of the great megathrust quakes that set off a devastating tsunami with reverberations around the world.

Then -- the great Christmas disaster of December 26th, 2004 -- as now we report that these are man made tragedies.

HAARP and experimentation with new physics equipment that is not well understood draws on massive amounts of energy (as explained by Stuart Swerdlow) that gets released in uncontrolled ways.



What is behind the string of massive quakes that come out of nowhere, slip along new faults, and promote the nonexplanation of there being a "rim of fire"?

They are no accidents but not necessarily conspiratorial events. They seem to be incidental and still man made, the consequence of the military-industrial complex's secret advancements. They do not answer to ordinary governments; they tell those governments what's what. So expect the disasters to continue and worsen.

This was the worst slip-strike quake in history by far. They have never been known to get this big. Such geological events are very useful as tools to inspire fear and control populations. David Icke pointed out in his "rap" song: Set up a problem to implement a desired solution. It is no real response, but a planned way of instituting new draconian policies without resistance or people even being aware that they are being enslaved.

When was the great tsunami that killed so many people in traditionally Buddhist (now increasingly Muslim and Christian) parts of the world such as (Aceh) Indonesia, the island of Sri Lanka, India (Tamil Nadu), and Thailand?

We turn to the all-knowing book for answers. The 2004 quake hit on Dec. 26th, 2004 at 0:58:53 (UTC). It had a 9.1-9.3 magnitude, which represents an enormous range concealed by the odd exponential way we measure earthquakes. It went to a depth, or originated there, of 19 miles (30 km), originating under the sea in the subduction zone. It caused an estimated 230,210-280,000 deaths making it the sixth deadliest earthquake in history.

The 2004 Indian Ocean quake that led to the Asian tsunami was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004 with an epicenter off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake.



The resulting tsunami with three giant waves is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, South Asian tsunami, Indonesian tsunami, and Boxing Day tsunami, but somehow not the Christmas Disaster or, as Wisdom Quarterly prefers, just the Asian tsunami.

The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in 14countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 98 feet (30 m) high. It was one of the deadliest disasters ever recorded. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand, making it the third largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph.

The earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 0.4 inches (1 cm) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. Its epicenter was between Simeulue and mainland Indonesia. The plight of the affected people and countries prompted a worldwide humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than US $14 billion in humanitarian aid. More

This weekend marked the 20th anniversary of the Santa Cruz massacre in East Timor. On Nov. 12, 1991, Indonesian troops fired on a peaceful memorial procession in the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili, killing more than 270 East Timorese. Two decades later, Amnesty International has called for a judicial inquiry into the massacre, noting that the failure "to hold all the perpetrators to account highlights a wider problem of impunity for crimes under international law and other human rights violations committed during the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste (then East Timor) between 1975 and 1999." Buddhist leaders attend congress opening

(Jakarta Post) The opening ceremony of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) congress Tuesday represents the largest Islamic organization’s commitment to religious harmony. Wearing orange monk’s robes, two Buddhist leaders stole the spotlight.

They were among the thousands of NU members participating in the congress. One of the Buddhist leaders, Ven. Dhammasubho Mahathera, said his presence was a show of support for the NU. "Harmony can only happen in this country through communication among various religious groups," he said before entering the Celebes Convention Center for the opening ceremony.

The other Buddhist leader, Ven. Siriratanu, said Buddhists in the nation respected the NU as the biggest Muslim group in the country." We are here particularly to honor Gus Dur," he said, referring to the late former president and former NU chairman Abdurrahman Wahid, who was known as pluralism advocate. Source

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A powerful earthquake rattled northeastern Indonesia on Thursday, briefly triggering a tsunami alert and sending panicked residents fleeing from homes and buildings, officials said.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude 6.6 and struck 55 miles beneath the Molucca Sea, the U.S. Geological Survey.

Indonesia's seismological agency put the magnitude at 7.6 and immediately issued a tsunami alert over the radio and television. It was revoked one hour later after the threat had passed.

People in the Maluku capital of Ternate, which was closest to the epicenter, fled from houses and hotels as the earth rumbled beneath them.

"I ran out of the hotel with other guests and we fled to high ground," Benyamin Otte said. "I could see people on the beach, checking to see if the were any signs of a tsunami, but everything looked normal."

Jimmy Rimba Rogi, the mayor of Manado, a city on nearby Sulawesi island, said the quake caused panic there as well, but there were no immediate signs of casualties or damage.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

In Japan, a magnitude 7.0 quake hit off the coast of the northern island of Hokkaido early Thursday, triggering a small tsunami that apparently caused no injuries or damage, Japan's Meteorological Agency said.

The quake struck at a depth of about 12 miles, and a 4-inch tsunami rippled at the shore about 35 minutes later.

"There was some light shaking, but it was nothing major," police spokesman Yukio Yoshida said in Hokkaido.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that battered much of the Indian Ocean coastline and killed more than 230,000 people — 131,000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone.

A tsunami off Java island last year killed nearly 5,000.
