Lent: Will Devil tempt us? (Alan Watts)

Impatient? Rush to Minute 2:37 to hear Christian approach and the Devil's opposition to being good

What is the Zen way to liberation? Kindergarten
Imagine beginning the Rains Retreat (Buddhist Lent known as Vas) with the idea of being good. Mara will come right at you like an angel of light (Mara Devaputra, Cupid, Eros, Kamadeva) and undermine your efforts, won't he? That's his modus operandi, as Alan Watts explains. But Taoism, and therefore Zen Buddhism, has a solution: Don't let him know what you're doing. One must act without intention, without premeditation, without the goal or outcome in mind so as to not let him know what we're up to on our path to be good. Otherwise, he'll just come along and ruin our efforts like taking candy from an old person or trying to give veggies to a baby: They'll fight you.
What does Alan Watts know?
By understanding both cultures, he's a bridge.
Not 40 days, but for more than 40 years, Alan Watts has earned a reputation as one of the foremost Western interpreters of Eastern philosophy.

Beginning at age 16, when he wrote essay for the journal of the Buddhist Lodge in London, Watts developed an audience of millions who were enriched by the wisdom of the East through his books, recordings, radio shows, public television programs, and public lectures.

In all, Watts wrote more than 25 books and recorded hundreds of lectures, all building toward a personal philosophy that he shares in complete candor and joy with readers and listeners throughout the world.

Insight can do what the ego cannot do by doing. - Philosophy or sophistry? Does Watts go too far?

Sixties icon? He was at it since before the 1950s.
His overall body of work has presented a model of individuality and self-expression matched by few philosophers, modern or ancient.

KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles continues to air Watts on Sunday mornings (8:00 am) and during Something's Happening midnights on Thursdays overnight to Friday.

The three main sources for Alan Watts are the Pacifica Radio Archives, (800) 735-0230, pacificaradioarchives.org, the Electronic University (415) 460-0825, alanwatts.org, and Wisdom Quarterly.

Trump's Jewish extremist g/f Loomer

Shut up, Pence! Loomer is talking. - That's right
While her name is Laura Loomer, she perhaps should be referred to as "Loomerinski" because of her shocking similarities to Pres. Bill Clinton's girlfriend and sex partner behind Hillary's back, Monica Lewinski. Poor ML did a lot to get a head, uhm, ahead. And where did it get her, a secret payoff? What price for her humiliation. Loomerinski is oldier, savier, and knows how to work Ex-Pres. Trump into a frenzy. All she has to do is stroke his ego, hug, kiss, compliment, stare at, admire, advise, tell racist jokes to, and she'll get a cabinet position in exchange. It was always odd that Pres. Trump handed over the Israeli-Palestinian "conflict" to mute and possibly autistic son Jared, a childhood friend of Chicago Jew and Prime Minister of Israel Bibi Netanyahu, who worked him like an adult toy at a father and daughter Jewish sex shop. (There is one, just one, and we've covered it). Is Trump dumb? We can only judge him by the company he keeps. Sure RFK Jr. seems to be a fan, but actually Kennedy and Tulsi Gabbard just see through the current war-loving administration and its next installment. VP Kamala is bad, and they are not willing to swallow her just to spite Trump. And handful of good minds really see evil Trump as the lesser of the two evils.

1st Concubine Laura Loomer, Trump's g/f

What can she do for you that I can't, Don?! - Yeah, Mr. Trump, take Boebert over that Bimbo!

They let you grab'em by the P, Bill. - That's my p.
(CIA CNN) Meet the new Jewish Monica Lewinsky, here to take down another resident of the White House. Earth men are easy, even easier than the girls. Trump can be duped on long flights without Melania, who is at home doting on her precious Billionaire Boys Club son Barron. Laura Loomer gets off his plane, as seen here, and gets him off on his plane, not shown here.

Could she have more of an influence on DJ than absent Ivanka and missing Jared? Jealous sycophants like MTG notice and can't believe everyone else doesn't. Does Rep. Greene understand what Loomer is giving the Don? Apparently not. If she did, she'd send in Boeber to seduce the Orange One or at least take him to a play and make sure he stays at attention as has a good time. #CNN #CIA #OperationMockingbird #news

Who is Laura Loomer, the right-wing activist in Trump's inner circle?

(CNN) Sept. 12, 2024: As Jewish right-wing activist Laura Loomer has emerged as a member of former Pres. Trump's inner circle, CNN's Elle Reeve looks back on Loomer's history of controversy. CNN's Manu Raju breaks down the reaction on Capitol Hill, and CNN's Boris Sanchez and Brianna Keilar discuss with author Jesselyn Cook.

I'm finally in love. I hope Barron understands.
(News Reporter) Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) condemns cheating, lying, philandering Don the John Trump for having sex with and possibly falling in love with close traveling companion, extreme Republican, personal campaign advisor Laura Loomer yet hating Taylor "Nazi Barbie" Swift. In a shocking parallel of the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree, eldest son Don Jr. is cheating on his fiancée psycho-loudmouth and aggrieved plastic surgery disaster Kimberly Guilfoyle, for partner of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. It sounds very Christian, with a rich alpha male being entitled to cheat on his wife or fiancée as part of the patriarchy they deny exists in the modern U.S. 💞💖💝💘😻❣️🥰😍

Pro-Palestine peaceful UK demo, far-right mob

Channel 4 UK, Nov 11, 2023; Ashley Wells, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Massive London march for Palestinians as far-right protest turn violent
(Channel 4 News) They were branded "hate marchers" by the racist, right wing, and since sacked (fired) UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman. But a controversial pro-Palestinian march through London went ahead and drew five hundred thousand peaceful demonstrators, in one of the largest protests the capital has ever seen.

The "vast majority" of arrests were of Far-Right counter protestors who clashed with police. But Michael Gove needed police protection from pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

(NM) Hate march? It was peace between Muslims, Jews, Christians, gays.

Israel's Hilltop Youth: Jewish killers (doc)

Doc (Al Jazeera English, 2019); Sheldon S., Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

🇮🇱 Israel's Hilltop Youth: Thou Shalt Not Kill [Unless You Interpret Your Bible or Talmud as Commanding That You Must Kill] | Radicalized Youth
(Al Jazeera English) How dare anyone even dream of comparing these violent Ashkenazi Youth to the famous German Youth of WWII. They should not be called "terrorists" because, well, that's divisive and muddies the water. We need clear lines of divisions, white hats on this side, black hats on that side.

Here (Israel) as there (WWII Germany) a right-wing and deeply biased government tacitly accepts and approves of this youthful behavior, even in some way supporting them and thanking them for doing the daily dirty work that looks bad when the IDF (Israeli Army) does it wearing uniforms.

Jewish extremists steal land in Palestine

‘They came here to attack Arabs.’ Welcome to life in Israel’s ‘mixed cities’
(AJ+) Al Jazeera is funded in whole or in part by the Qatari government (Wiki). Aug. 5, 2021: “Inside Israel, we are Palestinians too.” When solidarity protests erupted across the country in May, a Palestinian resident in the city of Lydd (or Lod after Israel renamed it) told AJ+ that local right wing Jewish Israelis marked their homes with red paint so they could be targeted for attacks by armed colonial Jewish settlers. This is part of a much larger project happening in Lydd, where ultranationalist Jewish Israelis have been moving into the city for over a decade with resources and support from the racist and divisive police state of Israel. The group is called the Garin Torani, or “Torah Seeds,” and its goal is to create a Jewish majority in Palestinian Arab-majority neighborhoods. Residents AJ+ spoke with say that while the city has welcomed these Jewish extremist colonialist-settlers, it has also ignored the basic needs of Palestinian Arab citizens. In the aftermath of recent violence that left two people dead, one Jewish and the other Palestinian, new levels of mistrust and generational trauma are haunting these residents. AJ+ went to Lydd to find out how Palestinians with Israeli citizenship are challenging the country’s de facto policy of divide and rule while demanding freedom from colonial oppression.

Secret hub of rightwing extremists: Salem RN

On the Divided Dial: Christian rightwing radicalism and hate talk (Michael Brennan)

The most influential Christian talk radio network you've probably never heard of
In 2016, Christian talk radio host Eric Metaxas begrudgingly encouraged his listeners to vote for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.

By 2020, he pledged his life to fighting the “stolen election” while talking with Pres. Trump on the air. Ahead of the midterm elections, Metaxas and many of his fellow talk radio hosts made sure the falsehood of massive 2020 election fraud was top of mind — on the airwaves and beyond.

And while election-denying candidates didn't do as well as many on the right had hoped, at least 170 such candidates have been elected to state and national offices, some of whom will be in charge of future elections. More

This week, reporter Katie Thornton introduces us to the company whose hosts never backed down from the lies of the stolen 2020 election: Salem Media Group, the largest Christian, conservative multimedia company in the country – and perhaps the most influential media company you’ve never heard of.

Thornton traces the company’s rise to power from its scrappy start in the 1970s to the present day — a growth that paralleled and eventually became inextricable from the growth of the Religious Right. This episode is an adaptation of On the Media's latest series, The Divided Dial. You can listen to the full series HERE.

The Divided Dial is reported and hosted by journalist and Fulbright Fellow Katie Thornton. Follow her work on Instagram or on her website. The Divided Dial was edited by On the Media's Executive Producer Katya Rogers with production support from Max Balton and fact-checking by Tom Colligan, Sona Avakian, and Graham Hacia. Comedy Jihad with Sakdiyah Ma'ruf

(The Feed) Arranged marriages, domestic violence, patriarchy, and fundamentalists' secret obsession with porn are just the beginning when it comes to the controversial jokes from Sakdiyah Ma'ruf. Taking on extremism one penis joke at a time
Taking on extremism with Indonesia's first female Muslim comedian

The Secret Love Lives of Muslim Women
Sakdiyah Ma’ruf’s comedy "opens this place of play" to talk about being a woman in her Muslim community with its cultural prejudices. We as, "Is it dangerous for us to be with you?"

"I don't know, perhaps if they heard that halal [kosher] condom joke," she answers.

Who Speaks for Islam? The polling research
Sakdiyah Ma'ruf — Islamic Indonesia's first female Muslim comedian — doesn't always get a good reaction to her comedy, to say the least. She's been harassed and threatened by religious extremist groups and accused of betraying Islam, but for her it's a important way to speak out that makes her feel alive.

"I always knew that I need to say something about my experiences growing up, about the experiences of women in my community."

Maybe it's time to rise up for our rights?
As religious extremism increases in Indonesia, Sakdiyah wants to foster understanding and break down barriers: "I can open this place of play for people to think about their own prejudices, about the life of Muslims."

"With comedy I really feel alive. You can come from a completely different background. But if we can share similar ideas, concerns, anxieties, pain...then you can connect to them in a more meaningful way."

When Muslims want to stop masturbating
In 2015, she was awarded the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent at the Oslo Freedom Forum, an event that doesn't escape playful skewering in her act:

"Oh my god, you're a Muslim woman in Indonesia and you're brave enough to speak up! Let me give you an award and a ticket to Oslo so you can breathe the fresh air of freedom and human rights."

Burma: "Buddhist Extremists" (Daily Show)

Daily Show w/Trevor Noah; BBC; Atlantic; S.Auberon, Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Buddhist Burma: No homecoming for Muslim Rohingyas
How Aung San Suu Kyi lost her way (Atlantic)
In Burma’s Rakhine state, hundreds of new houses have been handed over to families displaced by the state's violence against the Muslim minority Rohingya population crisis in 2017 when many were chased into neighboring Muslim Bangladesh. But none of these homes were for the Muslim minority group. Almost two years on, there’s no sign the 700,000 Rohingyas who fled across the border to Bangladesh will be returning anytime soon. The Burmese government continues to deny its military troops carried out ethnic cleansing and genocide. The BBC's Myanmar (Burma) Correspondent Nick Beake has gained rare access to the affected part of Rakhine state. More

Sri Lanka explosions: More than 200 killed as churches and hotels targeted
Deadly explosions strike across Sri Lanka
At least 207 people have been killed and 450 hurt in explosions at Christian churches and secular hotels in predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka, police say.

Eight blasts were reported, including at least three churches in the cities of Negombo, Batticaloa, and Colombo's Kochchikade district during Easter services.
The Shangri-La, Kingsbury, and Cinnamon Grand [Sri Lanka is the origin and source of cinnamon] hotels and one other, all in the capital, Colombo, were also targeted.

A national curfew has been put in place "until further notice," and social media networks have been temporarily blocked.
  • [NOTE: This was done to stem the spread of rumors on social media, in the event people want to jump to conclusions and blame Islamist radicals, which have never been a problem on the island, or the Hindu Tamil Tiger rebels with whom they fought the longest civil war in Asia, a war that wrapped up nearly a decade ago with many Hindus still being oppressed and abused by the Sinhalese Buddhist majority and the Sinhalese-dominated government, military, and police. It is possible that Buddhist extremists led by politicized monks are to blame.]
A foreign ministry official said 27 foreign nationals were among the dead.

Reports say seven people have been arrested, but it not yet clear who is responsible for the attacks.

Sri Lanka's defense minister has said the attacks were probably carried out by one group.

What's the latest from the scene?
Pope Francis in gold Buddhist robe, Sri Lanka
The first reports of explosions came at about 08:45 (03:15 GMT) local time -- with six blasts reported close together at churches and luxury hotels.

St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo was severely damaged in one explosion, with dozens killed at the site.

Images from inside showed blood on the pews and the building's ceiling shattered. More
