The Buddha or Goenka's Vipassana?

(Buddha's Wisdom) GOENKA: The man who removed Buddhism from Buddhism?

Do it yourself at home the U Ba Khin way
The Goenka Method (of U Ba Khin) provides some practical advice for practicing systematic mindfulness (sati) of the body, one of the four crucial elements in the setting up of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana), a practice necessary for "insight" (vipassana). Is it the only method? No. Is it the most effective method? Who can say, as it varies from individual to individual. Is it an effective method? Without sufficient stillness, calm, samadhi, absorption (jhana), it seems to Wisdom Quarterly that it is not. The claim is that practicing vipassana can produce its own mild forms of "access concentration" without needed full absorption. This will at best be a very weak and sketchy foundation of sila and samma-samadhi, virtue and "right samadhi." Samadhi is crucial and cannot be skipped over with the ideal of "dry insight" being enough for this decadent age.

Who is this Goenka guy?
Let go. Stop clinging. Be free right now.
S. N. Goenka (Satya Narayana, Satyanārāyaṇa Gōyaṅkā, Burmese ဦးဂိုအင်ကာ) lived from Jan. 30, 1924–Sept. 29, 2013. He was an Indian Burmese businessman and teacher of Buddhist insight (vipassanā) meditation.

Born in neighboring Burma to an Indian family, he learned vipassana from Sayagyi U Ba Khin (Int'l Meditation Centre, Rangoon).

It's never too early or too late to practice.
Goenka-jii (an honorific added out of great respect) retired from business in 1962, during a period of business nationalization by the military junta in Burma, then moved to India in 1969 to start teaching vipassana meditation.

His teachings are secular and therefore stay away from anything that might appear to be rites or rituals and instead emphasize that Buddha's path to liberation, which was non-sectarian, universal, and scientific (rational) in character.

This led to vipassana meditation appealing to people of all religions as well as no religion, theists, nontheists, atheists, and agnostics, from all parts of the world, East and West.
  • Vipassana, in the Burmese Theravada Buddhist tradition, is derived from the Abhidhamma (as taught by the Buddha to the monk he declared "foremost in wisdom" Ven. Śāriputra [27, 28]).
  • Although some Burmese teachers hold that vipassana and Abhidhamma study are inseparable [29], Goenka invited students to consider the theoretical aspects of these Teachings (pariyatti), advising them that the most important aspect of the technique is its practice (paṭipatti), contrasting mere book learning from experiential learning.
  • Students are free to accept the theoretical background or reject any part they find objectionable.
  • Goenka reported the words of the Buddha as follows [30]: "Filled with these compassionate and loving thoughts, [the Buddha] proclaimed: Apārutā tesaṃ amatassa dvārā Ye sotavanto pamuñcantu saddhaṃ "Open are the gates of the deathless state to those with ears [to hear] who renounce their lack of [confidence]," that is to say:
  • "Open are the gates of Nirvana so that people who hear and practice will be able to overcome all doubt," which is one of the Five Mental Hindrances.
Free 10-day course
I thought I'd join a 10-day course, get enlightened, then go get my nails done. Boy, was I wrong.
.
Four Foundations begin with the body breathing
Mr. Goenka became an influential teacher and played an important role in establishing non-commercial vipassana meditation centers globally where vipassana meditation is taught as a free 10-day residential program with no charges for food, lodging, or meditation instruction, with centers funded by voluntary donations from "old" (past and present) meditators.
  • How could it possibly be free? It is non-commercial. The rule is that only "old" students (who have completed at least one course) are allowed to donate. "New" students (who have not yet completed at least one course) are not allowed to donate. Donations are accepted after the completion of a course, which everyone qualifies to donate to at the end of each course, so there's never really a time when centers are open to donations and not accepting them. As soon as they are open to accepting dana (donations, gifts, charity), everyone present who just completed the course can give. Give what? Dāna
Goenka was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2012, an award bestowed for distinguished service of a high order.
Meeting Goenka-jii in person
The kalyana-mitta S.N. Goenka and his wife
(Wisdom Quarterly was fortunate enough to meet S. N. Goenka, 88, and his lovely wife when they were invited to the Dhammakaya Meditation Center in Azusa, Los Angeles, for a lunch in his honor and to receive an award for service to humanity, circa 2012. This was just as the Aztec Calendar was wrapping a cycle and the world was about to end, with few people noticing that a new cycle and new world would immediately be continuing. He seemed very kind, and not nearly as Dracula-like as one might think from hearing his droning, baritone Transylvanian/Indian accent on the standardized tapes played during all free 10-day courses). More

Israel's mass rape and sexual violence

Israel guilty of systematic sexual violence against Palestinians and Jewish IDF soldiers, U.N. confirms

(The Jimmy Dore Show) July 13, 2025: A recent UN report titled "More Than a Human Can Bear" details systematic sexual and gender-based violence committed by Israeli forces and settlers against Palestinians since October 7. The report documents harrowing accounts of abuse, including rape, torture, and sexual humiliation of detainees—both men and women—by Israeli military and prison personnel. As Jimmy points out, despite extensive evidence and testimonies, U.S. media and political figures have largely ignored or downplayed these findings, while continuing to repeat debunked claims about Hamas. #TheJimmyDoreShow

Jews against Genocide (City Guardians)

NK are not the only rabbis for ceasefire
Neturei Karta
(nkusa.org) is standing up for truth and a dedication to Judaism over the criminal and fringe Zionism movement that thinks genocide is a suitable means that justifies its intended aims. Jewish Jews backed by Judaism recognize that this is preposterous. Judaism enjoins us to save lives, not exterminate them. We cannot say that we can treat indigenous Palestinians the way Jews were treated in Nazi Germany because we were treated that way by white supremacist Germans led by Hitler. Even secular Jews recognize that going against the religion to gain a militant "homeland" for people claiming to follow that religion is just propaganda piled on propaganda, a psyop akin to Caeser's Messiah under the ancient Romans.

How to be a good New Jew in Israel

The Israeli identity crisis no one talks about | Explained
He's the King of the Jews. - Uh, Prime Minister
(Unpacked) April 16, 2025: Israel’s founders hoped for unity, strength, and a clean break from exile. Nearly a century later, Israel is home to something far messier and more magnificent.

Israelis are a mosaic of contradiction — [legal Jews and illegal non-Jews], secular and devout, Eastern and Western, joyful and jaded. Messy, vibrant, and fiercely connected, Israel today is less a single identity and more a chorus — discordant at times, but always unmistakably Israeli.

Most beloved JEW in Nazi Germany

Our family was more German than Jewish any day.

"Blonde Poison," Jewish collaborator hunted 1,000s of Jews and turned them in to Nazis

(World History) Beautiful Jewess Stella Goldschlag was born on July 10, 1922, in Berlin, then part of the Weimar Republic, which was the name given to the democratic German government from 1918 to 1933.

On January 30, 1933, Mr. Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg.

Shortly after, the Nazi regime began implementing a radical anti-Jewish agenda, and in April of the same year, the "Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service" was passed, dismissing Jewish professionals from government jobs.
I was beautiful. Why should I worry?
This sweeping policy marked the beginning of widespread discrimination, which affected countless Jewish families, including the poor Goldschlags.

The Second World War (WW II) started on Sept. 1, 1939, when Christian Germany invaded Catholic Poland.

Early in the war, Jew Stella Goldschlag enrolled in an art school, where she studied fashion drawing and posed nude as a model for about two years.

In her free time, she sang in a Jewish jazz band, and she briefly found happiness in the fall of 1941, when she married the band’s leader, Manfred Kübler.

Mistakes were made. We were young!
However, like all Jews, Stella Goldschlag could not escape the rising tide of Nazi anti-Semitism. By Sept. 1941, she was required to wear the Jewish "Star of David," and that same year, she was forced to work in the war industry, which temporarily spared her from deportation to a concentration prison camp, modeled on the American Indian reservation system by the USA.

Initially, Stella was assigned to the Siemens factory producing electric engines, but she was later transferred to an ammunition plant.

On Feb. 27, 1943, during a large-scale operation known as Fabrikaktion (German "Factory Action"). Stella and her mother were caught in a roundup of Jews at their factory.

The Gestapo were the forbears of the CIA
Acting quickly, they hid in a makeshift shelter and later slipped out through a back door to evade the Gestapo guards. Their escape was possible largely due to their blonde hair, which played into the Nazis’ false belief that Ashkenazi Jews were not as blonde as other Germans.

Unfortunately, Stella’s husband, Manfred, was arrested, deported to Auschwitz, and was never heard from again. After the Fabrikaktion Stella and her parents went into hiding.

Anti-Zionist, anti-genocide Jews (video)

Conversations with an Anti-Zionist Jew: Haim Bresheeth
(IHRCtv) Feb. 13, 2024: In this extended conversation, Prof. Haim Bresheeth-Zabner speaks about his Jewish family history and unique upbringing, reimagining the Middle East beyond Israeli apartheid, racist/Islamophobic settler colonialism, and Western hegemony. Prof. Haim is a teacher at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. An former Israeli Jew and ardent anti-Zionist, his most recent book is titled An Army Like No Other: How the Israeli Defence Force Made a Nation.

Guest on 9/9/24: Professor Haim Bresheeth-Zabner in London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in film studies. He is Jewish, a scholar, and a MAJOR critic of Israel as the author of An Army Like No Other: How the Israeli Defense Force Made a Nation.
Few Jews dare to even dream of refusing the IDF
He wanted to be a "Refusik" and avoid joining and killing for Zionist Jewish genocide to build a settler colonial project in Palestine and call it "Israel," but he could not. He bitterly regrets it that he was not strong enough as a very young man, when he was forcibly inducted into Israel's killing machine, which he reckons was worse than the Nazi war machine the Jews survived in Germany. Many Jews had money back there but were not free to take it with them if they wanted to leave Germany. However, they were allowed to take it to one place in the world: Palestine. Were Nazis behind fashioning a genocide against Palestinians or "Arabs" as Jews hatefully dubbed them?

The stench of Israel's hypocrisy in dubbing its genocidal killing force, the IDF, the "most moral army in the world" became too much, necessitating this book, proving what racist, Zionist, white supremacist Israelis are, valuing their blood over all others all out of proportion to anything seen before in the history of war crimes.
An Army Like No Other: How the Israel Defense Forces Made a Nation
Prof. Haim Bresheeth-Zabner
has 3.8 out of 5 stars with 21 ratings. This history of the IDF argues that Israel is a nation formed by its genocidal army.

A [Criminal] Army Like No Other: How Israel
The Israeli army, euphemistically dubbed the "Israel Defence Forces" (IDF), was established in 1948 by David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, who believed that "the whole nation is the army."

In his mind, the IDF was to be an army like no other. It was to be an instrument of might that might transform a diverse population into a new people.

Since the foundation of Israel, the IDF has been the richest, largest, and most influential institution in Zionist Israel's Jewish society, its settler colonial project to eject the indigenous people, paint themselves as the indigenous population returning from a short absence.

The IDF is the nursery of its social, economic, and political ruling class. In this fascinating history, Prof. Bresheeth charts the evolution of the IDF from the "Catastrophe" (Nakba), the persecution, ejection, and genocide of native Palestinians, to the continued assaults on Gaza.

(Corey Gil-Shuster) Religious anti-Zionist Jews: Whose land is this?
Posted June 8, 2024. Filmed before Israel's October 2023 war.

It shows that the state of Israel was formed out of war. He also gives an account of his own experiences as a young conscript during the 1967 War.

He argues that this army is embedded in all aspects of daily life and identity and that we should not merely see it as a fighting force enjoying a world-class reputation. It is the central ideological, political, and financial institution of Israeli society. Killing is its ambition.

As a consequence, everyone has to reconsider assumptions about what any kind of peace might look like.
