Daily Life of a Buddhist Recluse
Ven. Khantipalo (aka Laurence Mills), With Robes and Bowl: Glimpses of the Thudong Life
Control of the senses, contentment, restraint according to the path-to-freedom and association with noble friends who are energetic and pure in life, these are the very basis of the pure life for the wise recluse.
The ascetic who abides in the Dharma, who delights in the Dharma, meditates on the Dharma, and who bears the Dharma well in mind does not fall away from the sublime Dharma. — Dhp. 375, 364
However, there are certain features of this life which are general, and these may be taken as a basis for this outline.
The material which is presented in this and succeeding sections is composite in origin, some of it being experience heard from others and more again being stories told of others. Therefore, we shall speak of "the recluse" (bhikkhu) and present all of these varied sources under this anonymous label.

Wherever the ascetic is -- whether in a cave, forest, or in some other solitary place -- that person's day begins early and with stirred-up vigor.
Nor harm thou anyone thereof;
Long not for son -- how then for friend?
Fare lonely as [sword horn] rhinoceros.
Love cometh from companionship;
In wake of love upsurges ill;
Seeing the bane that comes of love,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Seeing this fear in fellowship,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Tangled as crowding bamboo boughs
Is fond regard for sons and wife:
As the tall tops are tangle-free,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Whithersoe'er it lists for food:
Seeing the liberty, wise man,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Casting aside the household gear,
As sheds the coral-tree its leaves,
With home-ties cut, and vigorous,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Dharma-endued, lucid and great;
Knowing the needs, expelling doubt,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
The heat and cold, and hunger, thirst,
Wind, sun-beat, sting of gadfly, snake:
Surmounting one and all of these,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Moving with measured step from house
To house, support of none, none's thrall,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Free everywhere, at odds with none,
And well content with this and that:
Enduring dangers undismayed,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
By river denizen is broke:
As fire to waste comes back no more,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
And turn thy back on joys and pains,
Delights and sorrows known of old;
And gaining poise and calm, and cleansed,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
'Mid things by Dharma-faring aye;
Alive to all becomings' bane,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
As lion, mighty-jawed and king
Of beasts, fares conquering, so thou,
Taking thy bed and seat remote,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
At odds with none in all the world,
Fare lonely as rhinoceros.
Leaving the vanities of view,
Right method won, the Way obtained:
"I know! No other is my guide!"
Fare lonely as rhinoceros. More

The Buddhist Nuns of California
Nuns' Ordination at Awakening Forest Hermitage

The Buddha with female disciples, later accepted as renunciates. The Dispensation was not considered complete until the Sangha had both male and female monastics.
On August 29th, 2010 our Dhammadharini support foundation celebrated its five year anniversary with the full ordination of four women novices at our Aranya Bodhi Hermitage.
It was a beautiful day and the culmination of years of effort by so many monastic and lay friends and supporters. It was also a new beginning for both the new bhikkhunis (fully ordained nuns) and for Buddhism in North America -- as this was the first Theravada Bhikkhuni ordination ever to be held here performed entirely by the Theravada Bhikkhuni Sangha (Order of Nuns) together with the Theravada Bhikkhu Sangha (Order of Monks).
Around 200 friends came to celebrate and witness the event, including eminent Dharma teachers Ruth Denison from Dhamma Dena Desert Vipassana, Ajahn Anandabodhi and Ajahn Santacitta from the Saranaloka nuns' community, and Sylvia Boorstien representing Jack Kornfield and the entire Spirit Rock community.
It was wonderful to have so many dear friends in Dharma gathered together on in the heart of our forest hermitage. And the hall and whole area was decorated and adorned by Deva Flower's friends Sumana and Apple. Amidst the chanting of Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu ("well done, well done, well done"), flower petals were sprinkled upon the long line of processing monastics and candidates as the gong was rung and they silently walked up the road to the ordination platform between rows of friends and family.
Those Ordained
Ven. Suvijjana had her samaneri pabbaja (ordination as a novice) on the mountain saddle adjacent to the Awakening Forest just over two years before. (See earlier post below). She has been training with Ayya Tathaaloka at Dhammadharini Vihara, the Bodhi House, and at the hermitage for the past four years.
Ven. Adhimutta was ordained as a novice by Ayya Tathaaloka even before that in Australia at Santi Forest Monastery, where she trained under the tutelage of Bhante Sujato.
Ven. Phalanyani has trained as a nun in Thailand with Ajahn Suphan and Ajahn Noah at Wat Ram Peong and was ordained as a samaneri (female novice) with Ayya Tathaaloka at our hermitage.
Ven. Thanasanti had been a samaneri for the very longest time, having her pabbaja with the venerable Ajahn Sumedho in England 19 years ago.
The Garudhammas, special rules for nuns?
The Ordaining Sangha
Venerable elder bhikkhunis Ayya Gunasari and Ayya Satima traveled from the Mahapajapati Women's Monastery in the Mohave Desert and from the Minnesota Buddhist Vihara. And Ven. Madika came from the Great Determination Hermitage in Ohio to fulfill the quorum for the ordaining Bhikkhuni Sangha.
Ayya Sudhamma and Ayya Sobhana, both of whom trained at the Bhavana Society with Bhante G (and thus have excellent Pali-language pronounciation) served as the Kammavacacarinis or Chanting Acaryas for the ordination.
Ayya Tathaaloka Theri, having surpassed 12 vassas (rains retreats) since her own bhikkhuni ordination, was appointed by the Bhikkhuni Sangha as the Pavattini or Preceptor for the ordination of her students. More>>

Simple Swiss Hermit: "Enlightenment"
What are the thoughts of a fool? Was I before? What was I before? Will I be in the future? What will I be in the future? Pondering in this way, one continually goes wandering on through Samsara. These are the thoughts of a fool simply because they are ignoble and unedifying. It is not a judgment to condemn others but a self reflection. What occupies my mind? What do I aspire to?
If one aspires to enlightenment and liberation, it is useful to ask: "What is enlightenment?" After all, the path to enlightenment is not what it seems. One can say it is simply seeing the Four Noble Truths, the fourth truth being the Noble Eightfold Path. But the path is no easy thing to discern. It is a very condensed expression of details left out of the discourses (sutras) but preserved in the commentaries. If one develops the jhanas under a skilled teacher then turns that jhanic power over to mindfulness and insight practices, one will very quickly realize enlightenment in stages. Otherwise, there is very little hope of enlightenment any time soon. How does one begin?
What are the thoughts of a wise person? What is unsatisfactoriness/suffering (dukkha)? What is the cause of dukkha? What is the end of dukkha? What is the way to the end of dukkha? Pondering in this way, one quickly moves out of Samsara towards nirvana. These are the thoughts of a wise person because they are ennobling and uplifting (leading to lasting happiness). It is not a judgment to extol oneself but a self reflection. What occupies my mind? What do I aspire to?

Meditation Masters: Advice on Enlightenment
Ven. Dhammadipa "The Approach for Western Buddhists" Phat Hue Pagoda, Germany
From the works of living enlightened master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. In this clip taken from Shiva Sutras discourse entitled "Discover who you are," Swamiji explains that truly relaxing from the very idea of enlightenment will take you to the experience. In the initial level the inspiration and the thirst for enlightenment is required to bring you to be centered. Once this happens, just relaxing about the very idea of enlightenment liberates you. The complete discourse may be ordered online at http://www.lifeblissgalleria.com/
