Naked Bike Ride 2024 was covered by Allison Barr for The Oregonian/OregonLive. Even though the official ride was put on hold this year, a spin-off of the World Naked Bike Ride pedaled through Portland on Saturday afternoon.

The ride organizers emphasize that it’s first and foremost a protest against fossil fuel dependency.

Second, it’s a communal place to celebrate being ourselves, exactly how we are.

The “official” World Naked Bike Ride took a hiatus this year. But protesting cyclists still wanted to gather for a ride. As one of the speakers before Saturday’s ride explained: It’s an effort to bring their qualms with Zenith Energy into the limelight. They also want to inspire others to commute via bike and celebrate body positivity.

Saturday afternoon, hundreds of bodies gathered at Colonel Summers Park in Southeast Portland around 4:00 pm. This was a change from the ride’s usual nighttime slot. After people painted each other, danced to music blasting from multiple speakers, and delivered emotional speeches into microphones, a sea of naked and nearly-naked people on bikes headed out.

Their plan is to lie down at the Zenith Energy building in Northwest Portland for ten minutes before ending the ride at the waterfront.

As the ride organizer going by the name Spartacus said, “Give yourself permission to know it’s your body. And feel a sense of belonging to your life and your body because your body chooses clean air, clean water, clean rivers.” Source

Two female American passengers claim they were kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops, accusing a[n effeminate] male flight attendant of sexism.

The passengers [neither of whom are named Karen] argue that there was no dress code violation and other passengers supported them, but the situation escalated leading to their removal from the plane without a refund. [Another woman who stood up for them and her child were also booted.]

Two female passengers have accused a Spirit Airlines [male] flight attendant of sexism after he allegedly kicked them off a plane for their choice of dress, as seen in a viral video.

“It’s just humiliating having to be escorted and treated like a criminal just because we were wearing crop tops,” one of the flyers, whose name is Tara, said.

A video of the spat shows the flight attendants telling the pair to turn the camera off as they protest their purported ejection. “There’s nothing that says you can’t [wear] a crop top,” sputters one of the duo in the clip.

“Dude, just chill.” Teri [who goes by Teresa] wrote in the caption that “everyone else agreed though that there was nothing wrong with what we were wearing and that crop tops are not against their dress code.

“He then continued to treat us poorly and give us no reasoning as to why he wanted to kick us off,” Teri wrote. Tara agreed.

“Other passengers joined in and tried defending us, but ultimately a supervisor lied to us and told us either we would leave the flight or she would bring the police,” Teri explained.

We love Putin. FEMEN doesn't.

[It was late in 2012, and the world was about to end, according to the way we in the West misinterpreted the Mayan Calendar. In Ukraine, topless activists were drawing attention with the help of the CIA, Western PR firms, and their own ingenuity.]

Sometimes, less is more. [Less clothing = more attention.] That's certainly the thinking of the Ukrainian feminist movement Femen (FEMEN.org), best known for its bare-breasted protests in its home country.

Now it has brought its self-described topless "sextremism" to Paris, opening its first international training camp and wasting no time attracting new recruits, causes, and attention.

Those Puritanical Americans should relax like us.

On a recent sunny morning, seven young women stride purposefully toward the stone façade of France's Justice Ministry.

Suddenly they throw their coats to the ground. Slogans are painted across their bare bosoms; garlands decorate their hair.

"Justice screws us," they yell in French as they unfurl a black banner that reads "Rape Club. This is Femen."

On this day, the group is protesting the verdict of a recent gang rape trial where a few of the accused got suspended sentences and the rest were acquitted.

"Now Paris is not the capital of love but the capital of rapists," says Inna Shevchenko, the Ukrainian leader of Femen.

"Today we came here to demand to put in jail rapists, and we say that if [the Justice Ministry] will not change their decision against group rapists of two 16-year-old girls, we're going to catch them and castrate them."

The petite blonde has a steel glint in her eye. Shevchenko calls France the center of feminism, which is why the group is opening its international headquarters in Paris.

But she says whether it's Paris or Kiev, women share a common cause, fighting against patriarchy and all of its manifestations: religion, the sex industry, dictatorship.

Guaranteed to attract attention

The group is already well-known in Eastern Europe for protesting against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Shevchenko fled her native Ukraine last August after sawing through an Orthodox Christian cross with a chainsaw to support the jailed Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot.

Shevchenko has demonstrated for women's causes for years. But she says it was only when they began doing it topless that people paid attention.

Don't we have enough problems without boobs?

"In a protest like that I see a great potential of women's nudity [being used] as a weapon. And I understand every time, more and more, that it works. That it is a peaceful way," Shevchenko says.

"But they are even ready to use violence against our peaceful, naked bodies." The protesters chant in English and French and move constantly; they lie on the sidewalk or circle the guards.

If convicted of sexual assault charges Cosby faces up to 10 years in prison. He denies the allegations. 

A topless protester with “Women's Lives Matters” written on her body has charged at Bill Cosby as he walked into a Philadelphia courthouse for the start of his retrial over accusations of sexual assault.

The woman jumped over a barricade and launched towards Cosby but was intercepted by sheriff's deputies, who handcuffed her (careful not to touch her exposed boobs) and led her away.

The woman was later identified as actor Nicolle Rochelle, who appeared on several episodes of The Cosby Show, the program for which Cosby is best known.

The new trial comes almost a year after a jury reached deadlock on charges that Cosby drugged and assaulted Andrea Constand, 44, at his home outside Philadelphia in 2004.

Judge Steven O'Neill declared a mistrial in that case. If convicted of the most serious charge of aggravated indecent assault, Cosby, 80, could face up to 10 years in prison.

EUROPEAN UPRISING: In Spain, women launch nationwide feminist strike protesting the “alliance of patriarchy and capitalism”

In Spain, women have launched the first nationwide women’s strike in  [imperial] Spain’s history to mark International Women’s Day. Their motto: “If we stop, the world stops.” 

Organizers say its supporters include the Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau and the Mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena. Organizers published a manifesto reading:

“Today we call for a society free of sexist oppression, exploitation, and violence. We call for rebellion and a struggle against the alliance of the patriarchy and capitalism that wants us to be obedient, submissive, and quiet.

“We do not accept worse working conditions, nor being paid less than men for the same work. That is why we are calling a work strike.”
