May Day 2025 protests roil US, world
There are two "May Days" today
International Workers' Day observed on May 1st and is also called "May Day" but the two have different histories: May Day is a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on May 1, around halfway between the Northern Hemisphere's spring equinox and midsummer solstice [1, 2]
Festivities are also held the night before, known as May Eve. Traditions include:
- gathering green branches and wildflowers ("bringing in the May") [3], which are used to decorate buildings and made into wreaths;
- crowning a May Queen, sometimes with a male companion (to Jack in the Green) decked in greenery;
- setting up a Maypole, May Tree, or May Bush, around which people dance and sing;
- as well as parades and processions involving these [4].
- Bonfires are also a major part of the festival in some regions.

Last Week Tonight: Mr. Pink doesn't TIP
Tipping: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
![]() |
| Eww!! I would never date Steve Buscemi! |
("If he ain't tipping her, ya think he's gonna treat you like the princess that you are? Think about it!") Tip on dates, get lucky? Tip really well, and she'll glue herself to you, and the restaurant will welcome you back like a loser in Las Vegas? Quentin-ji explains it so much better in this tightly written, if vulgar, scene from Reservoir Dogs (not to be confused with the glorious Reservation Dogs).
John Oliver discusses tipping, why it’s more complicated and fraught than customers might realize, how we can address some of the issues surrounding it, and whether or not he deserves 25% at the end of this story.
Connect with Last Week Tonight online on its YouTube channel for more almost news as it almost happens, on Facebook like your mom would, on Twitter for news about jokes and jokes about news, or visit official site for all that other stuff at once: hbo.com/lastweektonight

PUNK: Dead Kennedys: 'Life Sentence'?
For this ditty, singer-lyricist Jello Biafra fronts the classic San Francisco punk rock ensemble the Dead Kennedys (DKs), talking about our lives and the way we sell out to The Man (school, work, bank, not literal jails just figurative ones) without realizing it.
LYRICS: "Life Sentence"
Used to be a partner-in-crime
Now you say you ain't got the time
Gotta get serious, gotta plan
Gotta pass those entrance exams!
Oh my gosh, it's your senior year
All you care about is your career
[CHORUS]
It's your life sentence, life sentence
Life sentence, life sentence
You're squelching your emotions
All you talk about is those times
You don't do what you want to
But you do the same thing every day!
No sense of humor
But such good manners
Now you're an adult
You're boring!
[Chorus]
The walls (ah ah) are closing in
You stayed (ay ay) too long in school
I'd rather stay a child and keep my self-respect
If being an adult means being like you
Ah, ah
Are you really you, you, you?
You, you, you
You, you, you
Are you really you? No!
You're a chained-up dog fenced in a yard
Don't say much, you can't go far
Pace and forth, you're getting sick
Run too fast, it'll snap your neck!
Say you'll break out, you never do
You're just another ant in the hill
[Chorus]
