This journey starts with Newton staring at our Moon and realizing something wild: It's FALLING (sideways making an ellipsis) right now. If identification with ego, soul, and self are based on ignorance (avijja, not knowing, not understanding, not penetrating that, ultimately speaking, there is no self wrapped up in these forms or these feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness or outside of these), then losing that seems to the logical mind as "death."
It may be ego death. But death is always wrapped up with rebirth. When there is no further rebirth to endure, no more samsara, that is not death. That is liberation (vimutti, moksha, freedom, emancipation). All phenomena is characterized by Three Marks of Existence.

Alan Watts is not enlightened, nor to our knowledge did he ever claim to be. He is reciting a definition of "enlightenment" or "awakening" that is quite valid in Hinduism and therefore in Mahayana Buddhism. This is the whole idea that life is Brahman (GOD) at play (lila) in a great drama pretending to be that Atman (individual soul or self). Life is but a dream.
It is a dream but not in this way. We do not awaken -- in the sense that the Buddha or Awakened One meant -- to ourselves as GOD looking for another good time by dipping into Maya (Illusion) again in endless cycles of time (samsara).
This is not what the historical Buddha (Siddhartha "Shakyamuni" Gautama) taught at all. In fact, he went to great pains pointing out the faults in the Vedas (the ancient "Knowledge Books" of the Brahmin priestly caste).

Three Marks of Existence
1. All things are impermanent -- not only the phenomena we see and regard as material, physical, and tangible but more importantly all that we regard as immaterial, personal, and effable, namely, the Five Aggregates clung to as self. (See the Heart Sutra, which countless sing without ever making the effort to comprehend).
2. All things are disappointing -- that is, they are incapable of ever fulfilling us, satisfying us, satiating our craving once and for all. They are unsatisfactory, painful, suffering.
3. All things are impersonal -- that is to say, there (ultimately speaking) is no soul, no self, no atman. What we find and cling to as this "self," this "soul," this "ego" or "personality" or "essence, our True Self," is in fact the Five Aggregates clung to as self (our bodies, feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness).
- Theravada Buddhism -- in distinction to Mahayana, Hinduism, Brahmanism, Taoism, Confucianism, Shinto, Zen, and Vajrayana -- is a movement principally interested in what the historical Buddha actually taught. This is found in the Pali canon in the lingua franca the Buddha spoke in ancient Magadha.

The Rose Bowl is sold out, and the streets are going to be jammed with traffic troubles on the worst night of the year -- Hell Night (Saturday, Sept. 6th, 2025) of the Hungry Ghost Festival. That's bad luck. But "that's just superstition," others will argue so close to JPL and Caltech.
There are lots of things not to do this whole Ghost Month, but particularly on this night. Or the hungry ghosts will be upset and may take action. And if they do because, you know, they're pretas, don't look back in anger. Just walk away quickly or run. Not being fans of Beatle-esque schlock-pop, Oasis will be echoing through the canyon and foothills in the spectacle that is any big Rose Bowl event.
But they do have one really good song sung by Brother 2, Noel Gallagher, who wrote it (so we see who has the talent in the group, which one hopes they don't start fighting about), ripping off John Lennon's "Imagine," according to Nick Beato.

Now when this person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, be that person ever so well bathed and well anointed, with hair well cut, clothed in white, yet that person is ugly through being prey to anger. This is the first thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who is angry.

Now when this person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, one mistakes bad for good and mistakes good for bad, and each being taken wrongly in the other's sense, these things for long conduce to one's own harm and suffering, through being prey to anger. This is the third thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who is angry.
4. "Also, an enemy wishes this for an enemy: 'Let that person NOT BE RICH.' Why is that? No enemy relishes an enemy's being rich. Now when a person is angry, prey to anger, should that person have riches gained by endeavor, built up by strength of arm, earned by sweat, lawful and lawfully acquired, yet the ruler's treasury gathers (in fines) through being prey to anger. This is the fourth thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who is prey to anger.

The Gregorian calendar based on the solar year adds a leap day every four years to account for the extra 0.25 days it takes Earth to orbit the sun, keeping the calendar accurate over time. While the Gregorian calendar follows the sun, the Lunar calendar tracks the moon’s cycle, with each month lasting about 29.53 days. This means a lunar year has only around 354 days, which is 11 days shorter than the solar year. Rebirth doesn't equal evolution (Cayce)

| The endless round of rebirth |
Two of these, Makkhali Gosala and Purana Kassapa, are very interesting because they taught a particularly pernicious wrong view (miccha ditthi) that deeds (karma) have no results, no effect on anything. We're just helpless pawns of Fate or Destiny, Kismet or Chance, Luck or some arbitrary God-being, but not to worry since rebirth (samsara) will run out by itself. There's nothing to do other than just live and suffer or try to have a good time as best one can.

The Buddha declared this wrong view (called the inefficacy of karma) as being very bad, very harmful, and very dangerous. Why? It can lead to inaction or a sense of helplessness, as if we are all just "victims" of the universe, suffering needlessly without recourse to any permanent relief.
In fact, we are suffering for a reason -- because of ignorance (wrong views/delusion/confusion), craving (lust/grasping/clinging), and aversion (hate/fear/frustration). These are the Three Poisons of the Mind/Heart. And something can be done about suffering because something can be done about them.

Things that happen to us due to causes, not without them. There are always causes. We may not like them or accept them, but things are not happening without them. Therefore, we can do something about it. It would be rare that nothing could be done.
We must do something about our circumstances or never expect disappointment (dukkha) to stop. There was a third teacher, Mahavira (Nigantha Nataputta), the founder of Jainism, who understood many things and had a great deal of respect for karma; it's just that he had an imperfect understanding of it, which led to wrong views and conclusions. Worse perhaps than these six heresies is the popular Vedic/Hindu view that all rebirths are progress towards heaven or liberation (moksha).

It is much better to suffer a little here (as by restraining ourselves or delaying gratification) rather than always trying to gratify our ego and having to pay the high price for it later -- due to our ignorance (delusion), greed (craving), and aversion (hatred, anger, fear).
It is remarkable that the council or collective being channeled by Cayce understood this so well, even if they keep speaking of a "soul" as if that were a fixed and permanent reality when it is not. But it sure will seem that way to anyone who develops the third eye (dibba cakkhu) to see beings being reborn according to their actions, because psychic powers like telepathy or the "divine eye" do not impart enlightenment or liberating wisdom without the path-of-practice and purification the Buddha spent 45 years teaching to the world.
With those practices (the 37 Requisites of Enlightenment), one can see what gives rise to rebirth, the illusion that the gandhabba (the continuity of the impersonal consciousness process) is a "soul," that all things are impermanent, disappointing, and impersonal, which will naturally cause one to let go of clinging and thereby be freed of all further suffering.

As that is far from the path most beings are pursuing, there is no reason to think anyone is headed for enlightenment and nirvana anytime soon. However, in the meantime, one can be reborn in a better world, in a safer world, a heaven, far from the subhuman planes of rebirth, which are full of suffering that is far worse than we meet with here in this middling human world that has as much suffering as pleasure, as much opportunity for wisdom as oppression.
