Happy Int'l Hot and Spicy Food Day

Favorite: green curry over rice
There is a world of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. What is so good about vegan and vegetarian Thai and Indian foods, Chinese and Korean? Curry? No, it's that they are spicy and flavorful. But even Chinese food has a hot source call Szechuan. Mexican food (like sauteed fajitas) is the most popular cuisine in the USA. Why? It might have something to do with the spicy, freshness, crispy crunch, and health benefits -- greens, chiles, lemon, peppers, beans, and whole grains (at least in the original indigenous form). Many Buddhist countries, which are renowned for their calm, cool, and collectedness -- sure do offer a lot of spice. It is the characteristic of hot place, particularly tropical ones like Theravada Sri Lanka.

Anti-Trump protests: Hands Off! (LIVE)

They're the men we love to hate, the comical and nearly fascist leaders of a dying nation
(New York Post) Anti-Trump DC protesters hold 'Hands Off' rally with rest of USA: LIVE

What to know about Saturday's nationwide "Hands Off!" anti-Trump protests
"Hands off my benefits..." 3/14/25 (Jeremy Hogan/SOPA/LightRocket Images via Getty Images).
.
My PR firm said US would love me. It's shocking
Imagine a map of at least 1,000 Anti-Trump and Musk events being planned across all 50 states for Saturday, April 5, 2025.

It's real and interactive (created by Kavya Beheraj for Axios) and shows a significant concentration in the Northeast, West Coast, and Rust Belt as part of the new Hands Off! Movement (handsoff2025.com). Events planned outside the U.S. are not shown.
We have to arrest vandals who did these things and deport them to prison or capitalism is at risk.
.
The nationwide Anti-President Trump Movement "Hands Off!" is expected to be the largest single-day protest this Saturday since the Orange Menace entered office. Why it matters:
  • I'm here to Make Israel Great Again (MIGA).
The Trump administration's wide-reaching and ground-shaking policies have mobilized a varied cross section of Americans affected by political, economic, social and legal changes.
  • "This is not just corruption," the Hands Off! website says. "This is not just mismanagement. This is a hostile takeover."
  • By the numbers: More than 1,100 rallies, visibility events, and meetings were scheduled in all 50 states as of Wednesday (April 3, 2025) afternoon.
  • Organizers said they had gotten nearly 250,000 RSVPs as of March 29.
  • R'n'r for freedom? Support brave journalism
The latest: White House Garden tours scheduled for Saturday were postponed to Sunday in anticipation of D.C. protests, First Lady Melania Trump said on Thursday.
  • State of play: Protesters are rallying against several Trump administration policies, including its handling of Social Security benefits, layoffs across the federal workforce, attacks on consumer protections and anti-immigrant policies and attacks on transgender people.
  • The protests are also against Elon Musk's involvement in the federal government via DOGE — after he's already faced a wave of [vandalism and] demonstrations at Tesla dealerships worldwide via the #TeslaTakedown movement.
  • The Hands Off! demonstrations will occur at state capitals, federal buildings, congressional offices, and city centers.
  • Dozens of advocacy organizations are partnering to support Saturday's action, including the Center for LGBTQ Economic Advancement & Research, Declaration for American Democracy, the Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible and Planned Parenthood.
Two out of two women agree, these sh*ts suck
What they're saying: "This is a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history," the movement's website said. "Trump, Musk, and their billionaire cronies are orchestrating an all-out assault on our government, our economy, and our basic rights — enabled by Congress every step of the way." Microbes vs. Phages: America’s Gut Issues

Amber Dance and knowablemagazine.org introduce us to the phageome
The lining of the gut should look like a shag rug, but as most colonoscopies find, it's a smooth tube like a water hose due to eating gluten that kills the cilia that allows us to absorb nutrients (Oleksand Troian/Moment/Getty Images).

.
America is too fat, like this obese specimen.
Most have probably heard of the microbiome — the collection of probiotics, hordes of harmful bacteria, and other tiny life forms that live in our guts. Well, it turns out those bacteria have viruses that exist in and around them — with important consequences for both them and us.

Hey, microbiome, meet the phagosome. There are billions, perhaps even trillions, of these viruses, known as bacteriophages (Greek for “bacteria eaters” in Greek) or just “phages” to their friends, inside the human digestive system.

Phageome
science has skyrocketed recently, says Breck Duerkop, a bacteriologist at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, and researchers are struggling to come to grips with their enormous diversity.

Don't try to shame my obesity. I'm just big bellied.
Researchers suspect that if physicians could harness or target the right phages, they might be able to improve human health.

“There will turn out to be good and bad phages,” says Paul Bollyky, an infectious disease physician and researcher at Stanford Medicine. But for now, it’s still unclear how many phages occupy the gut — perhaps one for each bacterial cell or even fewer.

There are also bacteria that contain phage genes but aren’t actively producing viruses; the bacteria are just living their lives with phage DNA tagging along in their genomes. And there are lots of phages still unidentified; scientists call them the “dark matter” of the phagosome.

A big part of current phage research is to identify these viruses and their host bacteria. The Gut Phage Database contains more than 140,000 phages, but that’s surely an underestimate.

How do these gut bugs impact behavior?
“Their variety is just extraordinary,” says Colin Hill, a microbiologist at University College Cork in Ireland. Scientists find phages by sifting through genetic sequences culled from human fecal samples.

That’s where researchers found the most common gut phage group, called crAssphage. (Get your mind out of the gutter — they were named for the “cross-assembly” technique that plucked their genes out of the genetic mishmash.)

In a recent study, Hill and colleagues detailed a light-bulb shape for crAssphages, with a 20-sided body and a stalk to inject DNA into host bacteria.
How to counter an infestation of invaders?
It’s not clear whether crAssphages make a difference to human health, but given that they infect one of the most common groups of gut bacteria, Bacteroides, Hill wouldn’t be surprised if they did.

Other common groups that also infect Bacteroides include the Gubaphage (gut Bacteroides phage) and the LoVEphage (lots of viral genetic elements). Phageomes vary widely from person to person.

They also change depending on age, sex, diet and lifestyle, as Hill and colleagues described in the 2023 Annual Review of Microbiology.

Though phages infect bacteria and sometimes kill them, the relationship is more complicated than that. “We used to think that phage and bacteria are fighting,” says Hill, “but now we know that they’re actually dancing; they’re partners.”

Alkaline diet is the way to good health

The word vegetarian does not come from vegetable but from vegetus (life, growth).
.
All non-starchy vegetables and fruits have an alkaline-forming effect on our body's fluids. Potatoes and bananas are slightly more acidic than most other vegetables and fruits.

For this reason, to be alkaline and healthy, non-starchy fruits, berries, and vegetables form the main bulk of our diet.
Food Combining Myths, Science (nutriplanet.org)
Fortunately, nature has arranged it so that green vegetables, such as kale and broccoli, are not only very alkaline but also superfoods that are nutrient rich.

Most legumes are semi-alkaline, while whole grains are more acidic. Refined grains (like white rice or milled flour) have an acidic effect on the body.

All animal products -- slaughtered flesh, eggs, fish, dairy -- in addition to extracted, process, simplified sugars have an acidifying effect. Therefore, these foods should be eliminated from the diet or greatly reduced.

Go nonviolent and vegan? Not necessarily. For example, a vegan living mainly on protein bars would end up with an acidic and unhealthy bloodstream due to the sugar and grain, while an omnivore eating lots of fruits and vegetables and a small amount of meat and dairy might stay alkaline and healthy.

Food combining for digestion (True Activist)
The body maintains homeostasis (equilibrium), which means a blood pH level of about 7.35-7.46 to maintain good health. We do that by eating a diet of primarily alkaline producing foods, mainly fruits and vegetables. These foods are also the most nutrient dense foods.

There is no need for paleo folks and vegans to go to war in a battle of words regarding what is right or wrong with an alkaline diet. The facts speak for themselves.

In essence, we can become acidic on any diet if we eat too many acid-forming foods: too much animal protein and fats, too much sugar and refined carbs, as well as too many deep-fried foods.
Whether to be a vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore is, in the end, more a question of ethics. We can be healthy with any label, provided we eat alkaline foods.
So if, on the one hand, one dislikes killing animals, impregnating, imprisoning, and otherwise making animals miserable and instead wants to be kinder to them and the planet, then a vegan diet is the healthiest and most environmentally-friendly.

If, on the other hand, one just wants to stay healthy, then junk (processed) foods and animal foods need to be minimized or eliminated altogether. Whatever one eats, the main bulk of our intake needs to be mainly vegetables and fruits.

Trump FARTS in court, defecates in pants

What was that, Mr. Trump? - He who smelt it dealt it, Judge, so you should know, you SOB.

Adderall makes me incontinent
(Jimmy Kimmel Live) April 22, 2024: Opening arguments began this morning in the People of the State of New York vs. Donald Jessica Trump, he posted little bursts of lunacy on Truth Social in protest, his lawyers made it clear that they are going to continue to try to deny that Trump had sex with porn star Stormy Daniels (and paid her $130,000 to keep quiet about the sex they didn't have), Trump is rumored by many to be farting in the courtroom.

My flatulence burns my hole.
But there’s no way to prove it, so please don’t repost this video out of context with dumb captions like “The Shart of the Deal” or “Gassolini,” Farting Donny has reportedly been stewing in private over everything from the ugly look of sketches of him in court to Jimmy making fun of him every night on ABC TV, New York Times reporter Susanne Craig wrote that Trump is STILL having trouble staying awake during the trial and nods off constantly.

Happy (vegan) Pie Day! 3.14 (March 14)

Jamie Oliver (jamieoliver.com), Jan. 15, 2023; Imogen, Seven, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Bela (eds.), Vegan Test Kitchen, Wisdom Quarterly
Pi is important for math. Memorize it (3.14...) or use a Base 9 system and there's no need for it.

This recipe covers two days, Pi and Nat'l Pie
It's amazing what can be made into a vegan pie. Anything the American palette is used to is covered and already being done. There's no need to reinvent the compassion wheel. Just follow along on YouTube or on the websites of many vegan chefs and test kitchens. It's fun. And it's delicious. The animals thank you, and always remember EAT BEANS, NOT BEINGS.
  • There are plenty of alternatives to soy or wheat gluten, now more digestible, easier to assimilate, and gas and bloating are eliminated. Take with vegan digestive enzymes (and products like Beano and activated charcoal). Eat them sprouted, or soaked, drained, and prepared in a pressure cooker the way Dr. Steven Gundry recommends.
Vegan Shepherd's Pie | Chef Jamie Oliver
(Jamie Oliver) This vegan shepherd's pie is part of Chef Jamie's new, free, budget-friendly meal plan. It's a delicious meal designed to be good on the wallet without sacrificing any flavor. With sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, chickpeas, and lentils it's bound to be a favorite vegan hearty meal; perfect to warm up in the colder months.
