The Bretton Woods system of U.S. monetary management established the rules for commercial relations [1] among 44 countries, including the United States, Canada, European countries, and Australia, after the 1944 Bretton Woods Agreement until the Jamaica Accords in 1976.

The Bretton Woods system was the first example of a fully negotiated monetary order intended to [let the U.S.] govern monetary relations among independent states.

The Bretton Woods system required every country to guarantee convertibility of their currencies into U.S. dollars with the dollar convertible to gold bullion for foreign governments and central banks. It envisioned greater cooperation among countries to prevent future competitive devaluations and thus established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to monitor exchange rates and lend reserve currencies to countries with balance of payments deficits [1].

According to German Ashkenazi Jewish Barry Eichengreen, the Bretton Woods system operated successfully due to three factors:

1. "low international capital mobility,
2. tight financial regulation, and
3. the dominant economic and financial position of the United States and the dollar" [2].

The delegates deliberated from July 1 to 22, 1944, and signed the Bretton Woods agreement on the final day. Setting up a system of rules, institutions, and procedures to regulate the international monetary system [favoring the USA], these accords established the IMF and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which today is part of the World Bank Group.

Yeah, but, hey, Dolly Lamar, I like money. I love money. My Christian friends, who all want to be rich, say "THE LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil" (Ecclesiastes 5:10, 1 Timothy 6:10). I don't know what "evil" they're talking about, but I'm pretty sure the historical Buddha's main donor, Anathapindika (whose name means "giver of alms," "feeder of the hungry," born Sudatta), was super rich merchant banker, a billionaire in his day and one of the "noble ones," that is, an enlightened person (stream enterer, the first stage of awakening). So it seems to me that it isn't "money" that's the problem so much as the clinging to it -- craving, grasping, longing, yearning, striving, and being greedy and rapacious for it. I'll never have enough. There is no "enough" of an intangible idea of "rich" or "wealthy" or "having enough."

Right livelihood, right livelihood, what is "right livelihood"?

Right livelihood is the fifth of the factors of the Noble (Ennobling) Eightfold Path. (Noble or aryan means "enlightened"). This factor belongs to the virtue division of the path.

The Buddha's definition

"What is right livelihood? A disciple of the noble ones (enlightened ones), having abandoned wrong livelihood, keeps life going by right livelihood. This is called 'right livelihood' (samma ajivo)" (SN 45.8).

"If one's outgo exceeds one's income,

one's upkeep will be one's downfall."

How rich? I want my own rocket.

"Just as the goldsmith or apprentice knows, on holding up a balance, that by this much has it tilted down or by that much it has tilted up, even so a householder, knowing one's income and expenses, leads a well-balanced life, neither of extravagance nor of miserliness, assuring that one's income exceeds one's expenses, not one's expenses one's income" (AN 8.54).

Right livelihood's relation to the other factors of the path

Is it good to give our time? Yes, volunteer.

"How is right view the forerunner [of the path to enlightenment]? One discerns (knows and sees) wrong livelihood as wrong livelihood, right livelihood as right livelihood.

"What is wrong livelihood? Scheming, persuading, hinting, belittling, and pursuing gain with gain, this is wrong livelihood...

"One abandons wrong livelihood and enters upon right livelihood: This is one's right effort.

"One is mindful to abandon wrong livelihood to enter and remain in right livelihood: This is one's right mindfulness.

"Thus, these three factors — right view, right effort, and right mindfulness — revolve around right livelihood" (MN 117).

There are 18 things evaluated by craving* that depend on what is internal and 18 that depend on what is external.

• *Tanha-vicaritani, literally "things evaluated by craving," is the past participle. It is related to the noun vicara ("discursive thinking"), which is classified as a verbal formation, that is to say, a necessary precondition for speech (as in MN 44). A person free of craving is still able to verbalize but does not contemplate (vitakka) or ponder in these terms, which are foundational to our ordinary thought patterns.

The Buddha's advice on money is found in the Sigalovada Sutra and says one should take one's money and split it into four equal parts: 1) spend and enjoy, 2) pay off debts (bills, loans, etc.), 3) restock inventory, 4) put away as savings.

1. Spend on wants.
2. Spend on business needs.*
3. Spend on producing more wealth.
4. Save for times of need.

• *Inventory, paying employees, advertising, taxes, insurance, and so on.

The only better investment is good karma.

To preserve money it's not enough to store fiat currency (faith money like greenbacks) in the mattress and coffee can. It takes an investment in something that is not affected by inflation and deflation. Gold never loses its value for long, and it not infrequently climbs in value to earn more money than it cost to buy it in the first place.

Do not accept paper notes that say someone else is holding the gold (metal). Get the metal. This may mean investment in coins, which are a ripoff because the minting eats up part of the value. Krugerrands are better. Progressive loudmouth Thom Hartmann says he prefers ITM Trading for stowing away his troy ounces of gold... Better than gold is merit (profitable wholesome karma) that ripens in the future.

Who was Alan Watts?

Alan Watts (alanwatts.org) was born in London in January of 1915 at the start of World War I. At a young age he became fascinated with the philosophy and arts of the Far East. And by the time he was 10 or 11 he began to read thriller stories by Sax Rohmer about about mysterious "Oriental" villains.
 

What's in your wallet, spiritual person?

This interest led him in turn to the works of Lafcadio Hern, Christmas Humphreys, and DT Suzuki, and by 14 he was writing on Eastern themes. He was published in the Journal of the London Buddhist Lodge before producing his first booklet on Zen Buddhism in 1932.
 

He moved to New York in 1938 and then to Chicago, where he served as an Episcopal priest for six years before leaving the Anglican Church.

In 1950 he moved to Upstate New York. In late 1950 he visited with mythologist Joseph Campbell, composer John Cage, and Luisa Commaraswamy at his Millbrook farmhouse.
 

Then in 1951 at the invitation of Frederic Spiegelberg he moved to San Francisco to teach at the Academy of Asian Studies.
 

Worldview

Spiritual entertainer Alan Watts was profoundly influenced by the East Indian philosophies of Vedanta, Buddhism, and Taoism, which is reflected in Zen poetry and the arts of China and Japan.
 

After leaving the Church he never became a member of another organized religion, although he wrote and spoke extensively on Zen Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism.
 

Some American Buddhists criticized him for not sitting regularly in zazen, even though he recorded several guided meditations teaching a variety of mediation techniques. Watts responded simply by saying: "A cat sits until it is done sitting, and then gets up, stretches, and walks away."
