Heavy Metal Buddhism?

Wisdom Quarterly
Buddhist/comedian Jim Carrey loved Cannibal Corpse so much that he asked them to perform their megahit "Hammer Smashed Face" in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

My girlfriend and I were miserable in samsara. She was at the University of Hawaii and more miserable than I, asking: "When will the suffering end?" "We'll go East in search of enlightenment," I would answer. "You better finish school first and body surf more. Or we can go to a concert?"

In the meantime, we soothed ourselves with the idea of starting a wholesome grindcore band. I look Tibetan (like Gomo Tulku), and she is Scandinavian (like Alissa White-Gluz), and we were vegans. (I still am).

With our crazy mops, we were either going to be called Zen Zero or Decorticated Disenchanted Strands (DDS), because we wanted to cut our long sun kissed hair down to the skin with revulsion or grow very long yogi dreadlocks like the guys in Carcass (see below).

What I had in mind for Zen Zero/DDS (The Agonist)

Devi and dragon (angel and titan), we would jointly sing the lyrics she wrote in a special notebook in class along the lines of Carcass (classic British vegan grindcore) coroner jargon, girl bands, Cannibal Corpse (a comedic, carnivorous American band made famous by their appearance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), Cradle of Filth (dark British death metal), Dimmu Borgir (reptilian Norwegian black metal and our first concert experience), Deicide (darker American metal), Kittie, Dead Kennedys (San Francisco punk rock), and smaller wannabee bands of ALL kinds in Los Angeles.

If Carcass and other vegans could sing that meat eating is as gross as cannibalism with no one noticing, surely we could certainly extol the Dharma without anyone caring. And we'd feel good about it.

There's a way to rage at the universe with themes of disgust, dukkha, mindfulness of death, craving for liberation from samsara, and corporeality in general. Dress Goth, date around, and have music soothe the savage breast.

Sometimes renunciation grows to a fever pitch and becomes aversion (dosa) wanting nothing more than magical powers (abhinna) and enlightening everyone that things are empty and repulsive.

Female death metal singing lessons (Angela Gossow)

Carcass taught us that things "reek of putrefaction" in a "jigsaw quandary," and it seemed so Buddhist/tantric/yogic to cover their song "Carneous Cacoffiny." That's a song from their hyperintelligent album/medical tome "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious." We had a really good sense of humor back then. I guess I was a bad influence on her. But she won complete freedom, so it all worked out. And they were her lyrics after all.

CARCASS: Sometimes it's fun to scream Zen-style.

Carneous Cacoffiny

Carcass
...Striking up my discordant underture
A carnal cacophony perversely penned
Transposed...and decomposed...

But don't hold your breath
As you wait for your god or the void
Or the abyss of nothingness

Your usefulness isn't through
Your productivity I resume...

My sordid, soiled handicrafts
Will be your afterlife's handicap....

My corrupt crescendos...
Will leave you out on a limbo...
Your disposition I unleash...
You will rest in my piece...

With deadly dynamics
You're dead, buried, and barred
Your remains dampened and fingered
Your mortal coil is barbed

The death-bells are peeling
Ringing out as you flake
Shrieking out their recitals
A celebration of your wake...

Enter my funereality
My world two meters under
A curious habitat
Your muddy trench I plunder
Pass on to ethereality

Churned out under the sextant's blade
You live your life in wretchedness
And death is no escape
And death is no escape
And death is no escape

A None-more-metal Dharma-Burger

The latest entry from the ever-expanding realm of metal/Buddhism crossovers is the cover and title of the new EP by the great doom/drone band, Queen Elephantine:

The Tibetan-thangka-style art is one thing, but it doesn’t really get more metal than “Garland of Skulls,” does it?* (Queen Elphantine has dabbled in imagery from world religions and cultures, what with album titles like Surya and Kailash, and song titles like “Search for the Deathless State.” And you can download their record, Yatra (as in the Hindu term for “pilgrimage”) for free here.)

Hear the slow, dirgy, powerful track, “Potency,” from Garland of Skulls, here.

(See here for another recent — and recommended — Buddhism/metal crossover.)

  • *Note: I have dibs on the band name SkülCüp.

For a while now I’ve wondered about the band Yob. (Their name refers to a classic Warner Brothers cartoon; I distinctly remember being a teenager in bands and seeing the cartoon and thinking, Good band name.)...

The last words in the shorter version of the sutra are “Gaté Gaté Paragaté Parasamgaté Bodhi Svaha!” The basic translation, as I understand it, is “gone (or ferried) with everyone to the other shore right now!”

A little more Googling about Yob and Buddhism turns up a quick reference in a Rebel Extravaganza interview with vocalist and guitarist Mike Scheidt, in which he responds to the interviewer’s question about the use of the word bardo in the song “Ball of Molten Lead” from 2004’s The Illusion of Motion LP:

I’m surprised that one jumped out at you, man! A bardo is a term used in Buddhism. A bardo is a segment of life. The Tibetan Book Of The Dead goes into it, the bardos of life… the stages of life and death. More in depth, when you get into the places where the book deals with learning how to die. We go through time periods of trying to understand and remember who we are outside of this life.

And the band has a track called “Asleep in Samsara” on 2002’s “Elaborations of Carbon.” Is all this a coincidence? And more important: does it matter?

I’m not saying that Scheidt is a Buddhist or that YOB is in some way a “Buddhist band.” (And either way, they get points for clearly not trying to cash in on Buddhism’s cultural cachet. They’re hardly hitting us over the head with the references here.) They probably wouldn’t want to be identified as a Buddhist band, even if they were. And I’m not saying they are. All I am saying is this:

1) Metal can be a lot smarter than some would ever think.
2) Buddhism can be way more metal-confluent than some would ever think. (It can also be way more punk- or hip-hop- or baseball- or business- or whatever-confluent than some would ever think, too.)
3) It’s refreshing... More

Via NPR: “Gomo Tulku, the Rapping Lama”

Now, comments on the piece, so far, don’t seem to be in the Rapping Lama’s favor. But listen and see what you think.

Of course, there’s nothing new about the Buddhism/hip-hop crossover. And like anything, the results have been all over the map. Find some gems — and otherwise — in the Horse’s archives...

When the Buddha was Bad: Greedy Jackal

Wisdom Quarterly translation based on an archaic initial translation by H.T. Francis and E.J. Thomas (Jataka 148)
It is easy to think of the Rebirth Tales (Jatakas) as nothing more than children's stories, far fetched fables and parables the Buddha skillfully employed in teaching simple lessons.

Indeed, Aesop's Fables are based on them as they traveled from culture to culture to the delight and edification of many who lost sight or never knew they originated with the Buddha.

But as these videos show, they could very well be based on actual, albeit implausible, events. That they often involve animal communication or admirable characteristics is not to suggest that all animals are capable of higher-order reasoning or communicating. But it does suggest that some are. After all, it's not an ordinary being having these experiences, but a very special one.

THE GREEDY JACKAL GETS CAUGHT

(Buddhist Rebirth Tale 148)
Once upon a time, while Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, the Bodhisatta [Sanskrit, Bodhisattva] was reborn in the animal realm as a jackal. He lived in a forest alongside the great Ganges river.

At that time an old elephant died by the banks of the Ganges. And the jackal, finding the carcass, congratulated himself for discovering such a great store of rotting meat. [Elephants are pachyderms, which means "thick skin."] He bit the trunk, but it was like biting a plough handle. "There's no eating here," said the jackal and bit at a tusk.

But that was like biting a large bone. Next he tried a flexible ear, but it was like chewing the rim of a winnowing basket. He pounced on the stomach. But he found that as impenetrable as a grain basket.

The feet were no better. They were as tough as a mortar. He tried the tail, but that was like a pestle. "That won't do either," said the jackal.

Having failed everywhere else, he chewed at the rear and found that like eating a soft cake. "At last," he exclaimed, "I've found the right place!'' And he ate his way right into the belly of the great beast. There he made a feast of the kidneys, heart, and other organs, quenching his thirst with blood.

Having got his fill and feeling night come on, he lay down inside. As he rested there, a thought came into the jackal's mind: "This carcass is both meat and house to me; why would I leave it?"

0:26 shows that a carcass can be a home.

So there he settled to dwell in the elephant's innards, eating away. Time wore on until the summer sun and winds dried and shrank the elephant's hide. And the entrance by which the jackal had crawled in closed leaving the interior in utter darkness.

There the jackal found himself, soaked in stench, cloyed, cut off from the world, and confined in the space between worlds. After the hide shrank, the flesh began to wither, and the blood dried up. In a frenzy of despair, he rushed back and forth slamming against his prison walls in a fruitless endeavor to escape.

But as he bobbed excitedly up and down like a ball of rice in a boiling pot, a storm broke out. And the downpour moistened and softened the shell of the carcass. Restoring the entrance, light soon shone in like a star through the fetid canal.

"I'm saved! I'm saved!" cried the jackal. And backing up against the elephant's head, he rushed headlong at the outlet. He struggled and struggled and finally managed to get through, but only by leaving his hair all along the way.

And first he ran from his jail in joy. Then he halted and sat surveying his hairless body, which was now as smooth as a palm stem. "Ah!" he exclaimed, "this misfortune has befallen me because of my greed and my greed alone. From now on, I will not be greedy nor ever again crawl into offensive end of an elephant."

His terror at what had almost happened found expression in the following stanza:

"Once bitten, twice shy.
Ah, great was my fear!
Of elephants' innards
Henceforth will I steer clear!"

With these words the jackal ran off, never again to so much as look at another elephant carcass. [And the moral to the story is:] He was never greedy again.

Woolly Mammoth MOUSE created

These mice might be the key to reviving woolly mammoths

This squeaker might be called Frankenmouse
A regular mouse sits near a genetically modified woolly mouse. The latter has been genetically modified to have the longer, golden hair, and fat stores of a woolly mammoth.

Who is responsible for this DNA monstrosity? Colossal Biosciences (colossal.com). We've all heard of the woolly mammoth. But how many have heard of the new woolly mouse?

This chimera was genetically modified by the Dallas-based biotech company Colossal to have the same "woolly" fur and fat appearance as the ancient elephants known as mammoths. Why would a corporation create a genetic chimera?

Let's CRISPR this mutation in and ask them how they feel about it.
The mouse, Colossal says, is a key step in the longer venture to de-extinct the original woolly mammoth. NPR's Rob Stein takes us to the Frankensteinian lab where it all happened. (Will it come with a GMO label if scientists decide to eat them?) More: Short Wave: NPR
  • VIDEO: Russians find woolly mammoth carcass with liquid blood (Associated Press) May 30, 2013: Russian researchers say they have discovered a perfectly preserved woolly mammoth carcass with liquid blood on a remote Arctic island, fueling hopes of cloning the Ice Age animal. Hopes of making it de-extinct are nothing new. [Blend this un-freezable blood with a DNA contribution from a well-mannered modern Asian elephant and shazam.]

Love, Sex, and Death (video)

Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly; Jeff Walker, the "Carneous Cacoffiny" of Carcass; Nancy Updike (ThisAmericanLife.org, 4-25-14)

Oh the Occupy hippies of Claremont (B/W)
April, of course, is National Poetry Month in the US. Happy birthday, Shakespeare/Edward de Vere. And Wisdom Quarterly did an in house call for submissions. The rules were easy: "Repurpose something fun that tells a higher truth." Lately, we have been listening to a lot of grindcore, an extreme genre of death metal from Earache Records most people cannot swallow.

"Do it, do it, do it, you know you want to"
Three British vegans invented it (because vegans rock harder), and it changed American music. It was Occupy Los Angeles close to the end, before the literally "jackbooted thugs" of the LAPD Riot Squad stormed the peaceful encampment to cheering LA Times reporters sitting in the sidelines, after the "American Spring" was subvert by police state spies. And if Aleksa, the "face of the movement," can be a Cradle of Filth fan and a great kisser, why wouldn't Wisdom Quarterly have been listening to Carcass?

Then MARA [the personification of death in Buddhism] said to me:

Selena G. listens to more than Justin B. (wwtdd)
"Strike up
The discordant underture,
This carnal cacophony,
Perversely penned,
Transposed and decomposed
On strings fashioned from human twine."

I ask why,
But Mara carries on:

"Lovingly wound and fretted upon my bow,
Garishly incinerated.
All the dead resonate
In final death-throes."

I was vibrant as I thrashed
In movements scripted for the dead...
Orchestral horrors Mara vehemently conducts.

My corpus concertos were cordial.
I was disinterred and detuned,
All six feet below
In harmony with the deceased.

D.I.Y. (store.thisamericanlife.org)
In our pre-teens we walk around every day with the knowledge that our body is about to change. We don’t know exactly when or how. All we know is that it will happen and we will come out the other end a different person. This American Life hears from kids who are reluctantly facing puberty...any minute now.  Producer Nancy Updike takes some personal questions about death and dying to a place where they are happening all the time, the hospice. Mara explained:

"My inspiration is your disintegration.
You're my latest masterpiece!
The score creeps your flesh."

All my notes seeped from sinewy frets.

"But, no, don't hold your breath," Mara added,
"As you wait for your God, or The Void, or the
Abyss of Nothingness."

Mara knew, Mara knew, and said:

We live our lives in blue bras and wretchedness.
"Your usefulness is not through.
Your productivity will resume
In sordid, soiled handicrafts."

It was my afterlife's handicap.
The corrupt crescendos
Leaving me out on a limbo
And down on my knees.
I could not rest in my piece, rest in my piece.

Another good poem was based on Boxxy and Carlie Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," the bestest song in the history of music...except for Katy Perry's pre-girl kissing Christian rock. But it's X-rated, so let's just remind readers who "Boxxy" is, the most beautiful girl on the WW Web.

The Buddha and Sports (Superb Owl, Part 2)

Ashley Wells, Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly; Ven. Silacara Bhikkhu (A Young People's Life of the Buddha) ORGANIZED SPORTS (PART 1)
Siddhartha: Does he have a concussion? Channa: No, this guy's, uh, never mind (SF).

QB Colbert and a bunch of B's on the gridiron
Siddhartha the Bodhisat (Buddha-to-be) was living the household life, being raised with a great education to become a leader, a prince in the Shakya (Sakya) clan in frontier northwest India (Afghanistan, not Nepal).

That Siddhartha is great!
In Siddhartha's bodily attainments, he was well endowed just as he was in mind (intellect) and character (virtue). The girls, Shakyan cousins and princesses, looked on in admiration to various contests.   Although gentle in manner, he was bold in the practice of all the sports of his country. He was a cool and daring horseman, a marksman with bow and arrow, and an able and skillful chariot-driver. In the latter sport, he won many chariot races against the best drivers in the country. Yet, for all his keenness in trying to win a race, he was kind and compassionate towards the horses who helped him to win so often. He would frequently let a race be lost rather than urge his weary, panting horses beyond their strength.

Not only towards his horses but towards all creatures, Siddhartha seemed to have a heart full of compassion. He was a ruler’s son and had never himself had to suffer hardship or distress. Yet, his kind heart seemed to know by sympathy how others felt when they were afflicted or in pain, whether these others were men or animals. When he was kind to others, as far as he could, he tried to relieve any suffering they were already enduring.

Devadatta utterly ruined himself later.
Once when he was out walking in the country with his cousin Devadatta [brother of his future wife, Bimba, more popularly known as Yasodhara], who had his bow and arrows with him. Devadatta shot a swan that was flying overhead. The arrow hit the swan and it fluttered, painfully wounded, to the ground. Both boys ran to pick it up, but Siddhartha reached it first. Holding it gently, he pulled the arrow out of its wing, put some cool leaves on the wound to stop it from bleeding, and stroked and soothed the hurt and frightened bird. Devadatta was very much annoyed to see his cousin take the swan from him in this way, and he called on Siddhartha to give him the swan because he had brought it down. Siddhartha, however, refused to give him the swan, saying that if the bird had been killed then it would have been his. But as it was alive, it belonged to the one who saved it, and so he meant to keep it. Devadatta maintained that it should belong to him because he tried to kill it.

Devadatta, Siddhartha, and the wounded swan (daobingan/photobucket.com)

Siddhartha proposed and Devadatta agreed that their dispute be settled by a full council [one is reminded of a loya jirga or grand assembly] of the wise men of the country. The council, accordingly, was called and the question put before them. Some in the council argued one way, some in the other, some siding with Devadatta, others with Siddhartha. But at last one man in the council, whom nobody had ever seen before, rose and said: “A life certainly must belong to one who tries to save it; a life cannot belong to one who is only trying to destroy it. The wounded bird by right belongs to the one who saved its life. Let the swan be given to Siddhartha.” All of the others in the council agreed with these wise words, and Prince Siddhartha was allowed to keep the swan. He cared for it until it was cured; then he set it free, letting it fly back to its mates on the forest-lake. More

The Big Game
We'll see who wins at the big festival celebration and feast (daobingan/photobucket)

Once, after practicing with his many Shakya clan cousins, young Siddhartha had great prowess in sports yet remained humble. He engaged in equestrian sports, raced chariots, swam, ran, shot targets, had a white pony/stallion named Kanthaka.

Kanthaka and Siddhartha (BDE)
He was good, and the other boys were jealous. The girls looked on admiringly from the sidelines of their very patriarchal society out in the frontier between East and West along the Silk Road that enriched their land (janapada, the clan's territorial holdings), where Indian traders traveled into Central Asia near Gandhara. The great ancient monuments in Bamiyan were marvels of the day, later converted to representations of their greatest son. (They are so ancient that only Madame Blavatsky has proposed their age and original purpose).

Tired of being trapped by life, Siddhartha lets go of Kanthaka, his royal position, inheritance, and trapping telling his servant Channa to give back to his father (BDE).

Setting out on a quest on Kanthaka (SF)
Like earlier Vedic Brahmanism (pre-Hinduism) later Islam (post-Zoroastrianism) and original Judaism (pre-Christianity), the Buddha never allowed anthropomorphic representations. India did not have them until the Indo-Greco artists in this area started making them, then no one was going to be left behind.

All of the "gods" (devas, brahmas, and avatars) became beautiful ancient Greek-style gods (demigods) and chimera hybrids. Buddhism led the way in spite of the Buddha having it otherwise. When one sees the Buddha one does not see the Buddha, according to the Buddha, because to see the Buddha proper means seeing the Dharma, namely, seeing Dependent Origination.

Kanthaka and Siddhartha (wiki)
But we settle for superficial appearances, and those are greatest in Afghanistan, the original land of Siddhartha's family. The area has always been contentious (as pointed out by Fitzgerald and Gould InvisibleHistory.com), long before the British empire drew the Durand Line or the Soviet Union fought the covert CIA/overt Mujahadeen (God's Army). Russia and America suffered defeat there, like the Greeks (Alexander the Great) and British before them. Of course, we are still suffering defeat, because anyone can conquer Afghanistan, but no one seems to be able to rule and administrate it. Even when a "Taliban" is created out of angry Arab ex-cons from Pakistan and elsewhere, foreigners in tribal Afghanistan, still there is no ruling the wandering bands and their unique ways. Pashtuns are not the indigenous people. It is a country of Gandharans, Shakyans, Hazaras, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Turkmens, Pashtuns, Uzbeks, other Central Asians, Indians, Persians, and Iranians.

(K4V) Buzkashi (kok boru) is the Afghan national sport. It is a popular sport
among south Central Asians. Its Turkic name is kökbörü, kök = "blue," börü =
"wolf," denoting the grey wolf, the holy symbol of the Turkic people. More

SAVAGES? Like savages we Americans play to the crippling death on a mock (battle)field tossing around a laced up carcass of an animal. Much like the British play rugby. How strange, then, that we laugh at the Afghan sport of polo using the carcass of an animal. Somehow, they're the "savages." We invade them, engage in war crimes, rape women and children, kill civilians, assassinate by remote control drones, plunder a nation, make war propaganda reels like "Lone Survivor" for the people back home to feel good about war profiteering... and they're savages. Invaders, 1. Conquered, 0. USA! USA! USA! lol

What does Heavy Metal manifest? (music)

Some boys just never grow up, like Hank and his pack of hoodlums (King of the Hill)

I want magic powers. - Shut up, Charles Brown.
Answer: More of the same? A better feeling state to continue on to healing (from despair to anger)? Why would anyone play this music? Hey, we're not all lotus buds and rosewood malas around here. Let's explore the flipside of manifestation. Do we sometimes attract exactly what we don't want more of?
There are spiritual dark dimensions. There must be. Dimmu Borgir says so. There are other routes traveled by the angry -- those frustrated in their desires. They didn't get what they want, or got exactly what they didn't want, and are now complaining bitterly about it, usually in another world, another dimension. But these fine boys are here in this mostly pleasant dimension, and listen to them wail. Are they kidding? Putting up a front of toughness for the other boys to see, to gain what they want, fame and/or notoriety? Who can say, who can say? Das kapital, and das rock 'n roll.

Here you go, Chucky!
We spin in rounds of greed, hatred, and delusion (attraction, aversion, and confusion). This is samsara, the endless round of suffering and rebirth. But there is a way to transcend it, to abandon our habits of attraction, revulsion, and confusion when we meet with the pleasant, unpleasant, and (boring) neutral.

Let's listen in on their said tales (lyrics) of woe. What has it gotten them? Well, for one thing a concert at the Art Colony in Pomona (featuring Carnifex, Spite, Let Them Suffer, and Crown Magnetstar), at a venue known as The Glass House. Don't throw stones, guys.

LYRICS: "Die Without Hope" by Carnifex
I have never felt so f*cking numb/ In front of the mirror with a loaded gun/ Every word you read is stained in blood/ This gets sick cause I'm mind-f*cked/ I've died and my body turned to rust/ An empty carcass left to rot back to dust/ Like a casket in a shallow grave/ Out of sight, but I promise it will never go away/ These words may sound all the same/ I have bled to death on every page/ Watch as my heart turns to stone/ Watch me die without hope/ I don't want to break your heart with mine/ Everything I know about life is a lie/ This is what I feared the most/ Wanting love but chasing ghosts/ And it won't matter when I forget your name/ You know exactly what I am, and you know I love the pain/ Remember my words but forget my face/ Every f*cking scar screams your name...

LYRICS: "Caved In" by Spite
Oppressed by the tyrants/ Either shut the f*ck up or join the calamity/ Sign away your f*cking lives/ The path they paved with gold is the road to f*cking suicide/ Pulled apart in all directions/ Drawn and quartered/ Follow me in insurrection/ Follow me as we take over control/ Move/ Bite off the hand that feeds/ I am the true king/ I bow to nothing/ I won't fall in line/ Become a victim to your code/ No I won't/ Now say it/ True hatred reigns supreme/ Wrath/ Gut the suit and ties/ I won't live a lie/ I am the true king/ I bow to nothing/ I won't fall in linе/ Become a victim to your code/ No I won't/ Now say it/ I won't livе a lie/ I am the true king/ I bow to nothing/ Bow to nothing/ It's blood for blood/ Ensured all debts will be paid/ Rolled around in shards of glass/ Uproot your world to dust and ash/ F*ck you, you yuppy b*tch-made ugly f*cking cowards/ Hell hath no fury like my wrath-driven power/ Gut the suit and ties/ Retrieve their f*cking heads/ Hail, to your new-crowned kings/ Hail, true f*cking hatred reigns supreme/ Glory be to the serpentine sovereign/ Money can't buy the devil in me/ Hail, to your-new crowned kings/ Hail, true f*cking hatred reigns supreme

Slayer...Evolution of Extreme Metal (video)

Slayer Early Days, Ep. 1; Sam Dunn ("Metal Evolution," Jan. 7, 2015); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
Beautiful role model Kendall Jenner Kardashian is a terrible influence on people.

.
Metal Evolution: EXTREME Metal

For many metal fans, Extreme Metal is heavy metal. Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Entombed, Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, guttural vocals, blast beats, lyrics about death and the occult...we couldn’t tell the story of metal without it.

And so Banger Films presents "Extreme Metal," the latest chapter in Metal Evolution, the biggest-ever TV series on the history of heavy metal and hard rock.
Don't bang your heads too hard, kids.
Hosted by Sam Dunn and based on Banger’s groundbreaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree,” this episode features new interviews with
  • Death Metal,
  • Grindcore, and
  • Black Metal’s most influential sonic architects.
It's a global journey from the US to the UK and Norway to France's HellFest to investigate the history, myths, and intricacies of this innovative and transgressive sub-genre.

We're "thrash" and "black" but not "extreme."
How extreme is it? Too extreme for most TV networks! That's why Banger Films turned to crowdfunding—for support from the metal community around the world through an IndieGogo campaign.

That's how we made Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal a reality. And it doesn’t stop there: Metal Evolution will soon continue online on Banger TV. What part of the Heavy Metal Family Tree should we explore next? How about Nu Metal? Done:

(Metal Evolution) Is "Nu Metal" even metal music? Maybe. No rules.
