Strawberries for Zen: mindfulness now

(Zenith Zen) The Zen Buddhist story that will change how you spend the next 60 seconds of your life

Buddhism, Taoism say: "Be here now."
One of the greatest moments in my life, which happened early on, was coming to watch TV on a Saturday morning in LA. My dad already had the TV all tied up. But he was drunk and drifting off. Surely, he didn't know what was on. If I could just exhibit enough patience until his drooping eyes shut, I could slowly lower the volume, change it, and slowly raise the volume again. He'd never know. He would think one program ended and another started.

He may have been onto me because just as he started to drift off, he would rouse himself with some coughing or clearing his throat. I had to wait, pretending to be interested in what he had on, some old timey British movie from the 60s. Half aware, he kept an eye on me. And it seemed every time I made a move to change the channel, he would snap back to consciousness. I had to sit there looking all innocent, watching whatever he had on, until I became mesmerized by what it was.

This remarkable movie was funny and grew increasingly funny as the viewer realized what was happening. I immediately wished for a way to send it back to the beginning so I could see how it unfolded from the start. But there was no way. One could only enjoy as little as one had left of it. I didn't even know if I had missed half of it, 90% of it, or how much was left. But it kept getting funnier and funnier.

The set up was a Faustian bargain between a nobody up against a brilliant and angelic Beelzebub. The first had apparently sold his soul for seven wishes, and the latter was tricking him into quickly using them up. All the schlub wanted was the love of an unattainable beauty he worked with.

And that was enough for the Devil. All he had to do was trick the schlub into picking yet another foolish strategy for attaining his goal and then pull the rug out from under him by giving him what he literally asked for and never the spirit of what he wished. The Devil used the beauty as the bait, and the man kept biting...until, seemingly out of nowhere, he grew a backbone and chose to stop.

"What do you mean 'stop'?" the Devil demanded. "You're too smart for me, I can't get what I wish for, so I'm not going to use up any more wishes." The Devil never heard of such a thing. If the man doesn't use all seven wishes, well, the deal's off. He never gets his soul. The man had inadvertently found a gaping loophole in the blood pact bargain.

Beelzebub was too smart to accept no for an answer, so he seduced the man with friendly talk and an offer to use his place to rest himself, in the meanwhile sending in Lust (played by Raquel Welch) to seduce and confuse him. Then Vanity, all the Seven Deadly Sins at his disposal. The man was soon turned around and continued to wish.

During that brief period of friendship, Beelzebub let the man tag along during his busy day doing mischief and mayhem. As part of those escapades, they found themselves up a telephone pole cutting wires and making prank calls to a woman whose husband was cheating on her, breaking the bad news to get the philanderer in trouble with his wife.

The man, already put off by his own bargain gone bad, felt disgusted at the Devil's behavior. "How can you live with yourself, doing all these petty bad deeds, hurting people?" the man said judgmentally.

The Devil answered that it was his job. Anyway, it was just mischief. But he was hurt and he got the man back with one of the many zingers in this super-clever film. Who knows how this fantastic piece of comic morality tale came to be on American TV, which is usually filled with tripe and cotton candy. This was a truffle by comparison.

The Devil says to the man, "In the words of the great philosopher Lee Kwai Kwak, imagine you were walking along when a tiger jumped out and began to chase you. You run away but come to the edge of a cliff. Looking over, you notice the tiger's mate chomping her jaws waiting for you to fall. You turn around to go the other way, but there's the male tiger chomping its jaws about to eat you. What would you do?" The man's answer?

He exclaims, "What a stupid question! I wouldn't get myself into such a mess in the first place!"

"Oh, no, not you. You're far better off! Here you are halfway up a pole in Berkshire, half your wishes gone and no idea how to get down. You have nothing to learn from Lee Kwai Kwak and his tigers."

The man is nonplussed, realizing he should have paid attention about what to do in such a hopeless situation. Now, not having listened, he's on the edge of ruin.

Bedazzled (1967 film)
The film moves on to a climactic scene about the perils of rock 'n roll fame, a moment that could never be nearly so funny had one not sat through every previous trick the Devil pulled on the man. The film? Bedazzled (1967 film). The man? Dudley Moore. The Devil? Peter Cook. So incredibly impactful was watching this that it took years, but I tracked it down.

Vidiots, the world's greatest video store
Vidiots of Santa Monica (now reborn in Eagle Rock) had it! More than that I appeared it. Imagine loving a film so much that you get yourself in it. How? One can't go back in time and change the same timeline. No, but one can appear in the sequel then get cut out of it as the numb director chops the climactic scene, the funniest scene, and replaces it with a nonsensical gag. That's Hollywood for ya, every sequel a waste of time money grab.

Seeing it from the beginning, it was even funnier and more a work of genius than I could have realized and better than I remembered. Every Christian should consider it a must-see to question assumptions about their faith. Every atheist who knows a thing or two about what the Church teaches should see it to see those assumptions skewered. Every Buddhist might way to pay attention when the Trickster begins to explain the Zen parable of the tigers and the strawberries. Will anyone listen? Who knows? One can lead a vidiot to videotape, but one cannot make anyone get it.

Mickey Mouse Day 2025 (Disney World)

OC is a Tragic Kingdom, right, Gwennie?
Like most of us around here, Gwen Stefani (who long since sold out) and her ska-punk band No Doubt grew up near the original Disneyland (in Anaheim, California). To us it was much more a Tragic Kingdom than a magic one, all Hollywood and transparently capitalist, feeding girls fantasies that a rich prince on a white stallion was on his way any minute now if we just kept our heads down and played our assigned roles, never questioning gender norms and expectations, inherent sexism, and a system of patriarchy that ruined life for 51%+ of the world. Gwen played her role to fame and fortune, but at one time she helped write "Just a Girl" in subtle protest. OC/LA punks love-hated Mickey Mouse, Disney propaganda films, and the kingdom.

  • Was beloved American Walt Disney a well-known antisemite? Production manager Harry Tytle, and head of merchandising Kay Kamen, once quipped that Disney's New York office had "more Jews than The Book of Leviticus" [209]. Wikipedia editors (many of them being trained Zionist propagandists) will write anything to dissociate Walt from his Hitler fandom.
Little-known facts about Mickey Mouse that every Disney lover should know

It's Mickey Mouse Day! Where's Minnie Mouse?
Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic and beloved characters in the world of entertainment, but there are still many little-known facts about him that even the biggest Disney fans might not be aware of. From his original name to all the way he's made history, here are some fascinating insights into everyone's favorite mouse. More

Woolly Mammoth MOUSE created

These mice might be the key to reviving woolly mammoths

This squeaker might be called Frankenmouse
A regular mouse sits near a genetically modified woolly mouse. The latter has been genetically modified to have the longer, golden hair, and fat stores of a woolly mammoth.

Who is responsible for this DNA monstrosity? Colossal Biosciences (colossal.com). We've all heard of the woolly mammoth. But how many have heard of the new woolly mouse?

This chimera was genetically modified by the Dallas-based biotech company Colossal to have the same "woolly" fur and fat appearance as the ancient elephants known as mammoths. Why would a corporation create a genetic chimera?

Let's CRISPR this mutation in and ask them how they feel about it.
The mouse, Colossal says, is a key step in the longer venture to de-extinct the original woolly mammoth. NPR's Rob Stein takes us to the Frankensteinian lab where it all happened. (Will it come with a GMO label if scientists decide to eat them?) More: Short Wave: NPR

Mickey Mouse copyright expires (poor Disney)

The Simpsons; Kat Tenbarge, NBC News; Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Mickey Mouse copyright expiration inspires horror movies, video games, and memes
Don't touch my patent or I'll sue.
The cartoon rat "Mickey Mouse" will finally appear in new, non-Disney creative works after 95 years of copyright protection of the character expired on Jan. 1, 2024.

With this, early versions of Mickey Mouse are now part of the public domain and non-Disney creators can use them in their own for-profit works (like that time The Simpsons made a Steamboat Willie knockoff segment).
Just in the last two days, independent video game creators and film directors have announced two horror movies and a video game featuring the character, while memes are spreading online showing Mickey in absurd and inappropriate scenes, including nautical accidents and terrorist attacks.

Mickey Hitler fights for Israel, and Donald Hamas gets slaughtered and eaten? The quick capitalization on Mickey’s updated copyright status is the most recent example of how iconic pieces of intellectual property can be quickly remixed and recycled in the digital age for art and profit. Let's hope that rappers don't start drawing comic strips or else it may invent a whole new genre of cartooning that takes over the world.

1928’s “Steamboat Willie” and “Plane Crazy” were the first two Walt Disney Animation releases to feature Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and the former was the first moving picture synced to sound.

The characters were first protected under U.S. copyright law for 50 years, then Disney campaigned for and received extensions to further capitalize on the invention against the interests of everyone else.

As Disney’s grip on the intellectual property rights surrounding the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse have come to an end, creators have poked fun at the numerous possibilities that could come from the change. More

O-Rod's oh no: Taylor Swift is Person of Year

Taylor "Nazi Barbie" Swift Time Magazine cover, December 2023; Olivia Rodrigo (Saturday Night Live, 12/9/23); Key of Awesome; Bart Barker; Team Olivia (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Who in the Hades does Olivia Rodrigo think she is, putting Tay-Tay (Taylor "Nazi Barbie" Swift) to shame and giving Queen Bee (Beyonce) a run for her money? You're already top of the pops, girl, so slow down. We can't hardly keep up.

Oh, we get it. No rest for the wicked. Rival T-Swift has just become Time Magazine's person of the year for 2023, making millions on tour, getting accolades one can hardly believe she deserves, and making an s-ton of money, which is what really matters in this society. Bravo, Swift! Frenemies? Can we be the best of enemies, Vampire?

What if they were to join forces like early Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga?

What if boys invented "Vampire" rather than whomever Olivia Rodrigo got the idea from? Then they'd make a metal version of yelling, full of Rodrigo's emotion but more umphh in the music. Olivia rules. Just ask Elvis Costello. She's young, she needs ideas.

Mice problem? The "Buddhist Solution"

Editor-in-Chief Waylon Lewis (ElephantJournal.com); Shambhala Buddhist Community; Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
.
Why would you want to kill us? We're cute!
Mice are cute and smart and feeling and have families, but they poop and pee, shred and get into foods in our houses. So they have to go, but how?

Let’s avoid torturing, poisoning, killing, or freaking ’em out. No torture, no death, and NO cost.

Look, I’ve got mice all over my kitchen countertops and in my cabinets and even in my toaster. I'm doing this tonight:

Mice walk into tube, fall into can.
“This ingeniously simple mouse trap really works. Thank you!”

UPDATE: I’ve now caught four mice this week, three the first two days, and haven’t seen any traces of new mice activity around my kitchen or elsewhere.

They’re really cute and sentient [feeling] and freaked out. I kinda like ’em. I don’t get this whole attitude of “exterminate/poison my own house.” It’s expensive, it’s aggressive, it’s stupid, and it’s bad for ME, too. This is way easier.

This query was sent to the Shambhala Buddhist community:
  • If you have experience removing mice from your building in a sane and compassionate way, please send your thoughts. ~ Thank you, Noah
Many replies, many compassionate solutions
I just caught three mice the humane way for catch and release. (See below for photos).
.
Need a monkey? Use a monkey trap.
Hi, Noah. If you can find where these little beings are entering your dwelling, you can block the entry with a spray foam product: "Great Stuff: Insulating Foam Sealant." You’ll need to reinforce the foam with some steel wool, however — otherwise they can chew their way back in. ~ Cheers, Mike

Dear Noah, et al., here at the Halifax Shambhala Centre, and also in my flat [apartment], we use the high-pitched frequency sound producers that plug into electrical outlets in all rooms. They are sold at hardware stores [about $20]. It takes about a month for them to move elsewhere, but the mice seem to hate it so much they do leave – and new ones just pass through very briefly. ~ Cheers, David

Mice are smart, kind, but reproduce too much
I’ve used cheap, simple Have a Heart-style traps I found on ebay.com by searching ‘mouse trap’… I put a little peanut butter inside, then let the mice go [catch here and release elsewhere] a few blocks away in a park. I haven’t had mice now for six months, and I used to have a ton of them, eating stuff on counters and pooping everywhere.

[Fear] And their poop is supposed to be awful. Some sort of disease is related to it. Would love to hear from others on what they’ve done, so I can share with our readers who want to be compassionate when it comes to this common problem. ~Yours, Way

Everyone, until we plugged in our high frequency sound repeller thing, we used the Have-a-Heart traps successfully. However, here in the Haight Ashbury [neighborhood of San Francisco] the mice prefer organic crumbly feta over organic crunchy peanut butter. (Your mice may vary). ~ Sean

I have used the “[ultra-high frequency] sound” [no sound to you] device also, but find a product called Shake Away which you can get online. This is an organic repellent of bobcat and fox urine. No odor to you. You place it in the holes they come in. Under conditions of snow and rain it is best sprinkled around the perimeter of the building. It works well and is not harmful to anyone.
I use the number online to order direct, which saves money for me but may be a moot point for you as you will have it shipped to Canada. Perhaps, in Canada there is a product made there. Humane collection of the urine is assured.

Make sure all food products or any other attractive mice materials are not available, i.e., good housekeeping practices. The shake away is not harmful to us or pets, and I have read the sound [device] does not harm pets or animals. I have one in my chicken coop with no effect on the birds. ~ Cheers, Merle

Concluding advice: I find marching around with a flute gets them to follow me and then I can lead them out the door. ~ Yours, Chris Easy. It's a free, humane method, and they don’t die of fright.

Cats are great, but not if you like mice/rats. (You know folks have rodents as pets. They’re smart, sweet, and can do as many tricks as dogs)… Cats also have issues with destroying birds if they’re outside, and they may not be fully happy living inside only, but that’s another question others will know more about.

Don't worry. You're about to be released into wild
Anyways, this is what I do: …paper towel roll or brown bag, peanut butter or something on one end, half off the counter over a (tall) trash can. They fall, get the peanut butter and something to hide in, you put the lid on, walk/bike/take them to nature/a park or put ’em outside as you would with humane traps, yay!

I have to do this somewhat regularly, but it keeps them out of the house for weeks on end and prevents them from making a mouse hotel in the basement or whatever. (They can’t settle in). They’re cute, so don’t kill ’em! ~ Metta

Six more weeks of winter: Groundhog Day (2/1)

Groundhog Day 2023: Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction
(TODAY, Feb. 2, 2023) Punxsutawney Phil has officially made his annual Groundhog Day weather prediction. Will we see six more weeks of winter? #Groundhogday #PunxsutawneyPhil #Winter

.
It's that time of year again to suspend disbelief (like at Xmas for Krampus and St. Nick lore) and join in the revelry. In the past Euro Americans used to kill the poor rodent at the center of their witchery and eat it. Now they're nicer and honor him highly as a good vermin weatherman rodent.

Let's murder and eat this varmint for its witchcraft!
(Wiki edited by WQ) Punxsutawney Phil is the name given to a groundhog residing in Young Township near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania (near our Germanic Amish friends), who is the central figure in Punxsutawney's annual Groundhog Day celebration.
Folklore
We sure love our rats in North America.
On February 2nd each year, Punxsutawney holds a civic festival with music and food [that in the past included slaughtered the groundhog].

During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, P-Phil emerges from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Punxsutawney town.

According to German witchcraft tradition, if P-Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter-like weather.

But if P-Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an "early spring." Punxsutawney's event is the most famous of many Groundhog Day festivals held in the Euro-invaded United States and Canada.

The event formally began in 1887, although its roots go back even further.

Punxsutawney Phil canon

Ya, das goot, Mein Leibchen. We shall eat it and watch the movie.
The practices and lore of Punxsutawney Phil's predictions are predicated on a light-hearted suspension of disbelief by those involved.

According to the lore, there is only one P-Phil, and all other groundhogs are impostors.

It is claimed that this one groundhog has lived to make weather prognostications since 1886, sustained by drinks of "groundhog punch" or "elixir of life" (Gaelic/Celtic whiskey or uisce beatha) administered at the annual Groundhog Picnic in the fall [6].

The lifespan of other groundhogs in the wild is roughly six years [7].

According to the Groundhog Club, Phil, after the prediction, speaks to the club president in the language of "Groundhogese," which only the current president can understand, and then his prediction is translated and revealed to all in English or German [6].

Talk to me about world peace not groundhogs.
The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a Celtic and Germanic tradition that says that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2nd, the pagan holiday of Imbolc (known among Christians as Candlemas), winter and cold weather will last another six weeks.

If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early. In Germany, the tradition evolved into a myth that if the sun came out on Candlemas, a hedgehog would cast its shadow, predicting snow all the way into May [8].

When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, they transferred the tradition onto local fauna, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs. Several other towns in the region hold similar Groundhog Day eventsMore
