Today, rapper Kendrick Lamar became the first musician (neither classical nor jazz) to ever win a Pulitzer Prize for Music. Kanye West feels jilted and jealous, as he considers himself the greatest rapper who ever lived. Winner Lamar is from Compton, which is in South Central Los Angeles, which makes this a win for the Westside! Lamar has topped the charts with music that tackles issues of race, politics, religion, and even mental health.
The Pulitzer follows the five Grammy Awards won by Lamar in January for “DAMN.,” his fourth studio album. His previous album, “To Pimp a Butterfly,” also won five Grammys. Lamar recently produced and curated the soundtrack for the movie “Black Panther” to critical acclaim. Democracy Now! speaks to a progressive black high school teacher, Mr. Mooney, in New Jersey who uses Lamar’s recordings in his classroom. More
