The hardcore Los Angeles punk scene was just beginning when Director Penelope Spheeris conceived of The Decline of Western Civilization.

It's a documentary featuring the punk bands: The Germs, FEAR, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, X, the Alice Bag Band, Catholic Discipline, as well as an assortment of talking head punks in candid interviews about the rebellious movement.
