The eerie incident reportedly taking place on Saturday night had observers astounded and taking to the streets to film the frightening sight. Chinese social media was flooded with footage of the unsettling scene.

Many online speculated the event was a harbinger of doom, suggesting it was foreshadowing a massive earthquake. Others wondered if the crimson skies were connected to chemtrails (due to the magnetic dust falling from above) or to the pandemic, which has caused the nearby city of Shanghai to institute a strict lockdown.

The evening drew comparisons to a legendary 1770 event, when the sky turned red for nine days over several countries in Asia. That case was solved in 2017 when a study determined that it was likely caused by a massive magnetic storm.

This weekend's incident has a preposterous explanation. The Zhoushan Meteorological Bureau issued a statement that the fiery hue is simply the result of light, likely from fishing boats, reflecting off low-level clouds.

The spooky sky may be a weird weather event or other unknown phenomenon, but it may be a while before residents of Zhoushan are able to breathe a sigh of relief.
