Hollywood loves a sequel. Anora took home five, beating everyone else. Hollywood (the mainstream media dream machine) conditions us what to want and aspire to:
I'm a man. I want to be rich and find a wh*re with a heart of gold.
I'm a wh*re. I want to get me a rich man with a trunk of gold.
I'm a they. I don't know what I want, other than all of it. Is that available?
This is Hollywood. We'll imagineer it for you all!
"How can we milk more money out of Pretty Woman if Julia Roberts isn't pulling in ticket sales like she used to?"
"I know! Let's dump Buddhist Dick Gere and Hindu Julie Roberts and replace them with like a really rich Russian, who's too young to have that much money and handsome. But here's the twist, he's nice, too!"
"How's that a twist? Richard Gere was the nicest John ever, and Roberts was a ditz."
"Yeah, a sexy ditz. We'll make the protagonist smart, a shark in this version, and -- get this -- they're the victims, like of the Mafia. The women will eat it up, eat their hearts out, and their daughters will push ticket sales like it's all new material."
"Brilliant! What do we call it?"
"Hmm, we'll ask the Numerology Department to come up with something esoteric like, 'A whore huh?'"
"'A bore huh?'"?
"No, neither nor nor bore, wait, that's it! A nor 'uh!!"
"I like it! What's her last name?"
"Like 'Cher,' just Anoruh?"
"But that's 1+5+6+9+3+8=32=5. We need a 3. Let's try 1+5+6+1=3. That checks out!"
"The department suggests Mikheeva as her surname, which adds up."
"Get the psychics in here, we got ourselves a sequel!"

But it also sparked quite a bit of controversy thanks to one major feature of its plot. So what is the film actually about, what world is it supposed to be, and is it empowerment or exploitation?
Here’s what the world needs to know about Poor Things, those offensive sex scenes, and the message the film is trying to convey between sheety sheet scenes.

WQ Review
I'm a producer, like Barb's Barbie
While one may be deceived into thinking this is a gorgeous film with bright colors, it is really, dark, dingy, and uber steam punk for a lot of the beginning. When colors enter, one realizes this is not even this world unless it represents Tartaria(mudflood Tartary), which would make a lot of sense. But it's supposed to be same old same late 1800s Mary Poppins' London.
What a ride 14+ years since Easy A
We went to see Poor Things because Mr. Skin said Emma Stone was naked in it, a first for an A-listed Hollywood starlet in her prime or even at the tail end of it. We wanted to see action. We were not expecting grotesque gore, so many close ups of Willem Dafoe's disfigured face.
He's ugly enough, but here he is unsightly (nearly impossible to look at for very long), although his voice is warm, Irish, and inviting. He's cuddly, which is a feat for the character of Dr. Frankenstein. What is bothersome about the film is Frankenstein's monster ("Bella Baxter" played by Emma Stone), unlike the nice Herman Munster character Hollywood has always given us even in the original adaptation of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's short story competition winner that became a book about the Jewish menace.
Optioned books are just starting points for films.
Shelley almost certainly never imagined Oppenheimer, the winner of this year's Best Picture Oscar from the Academy, when she combined the common Jewish surnames Franken and Stein overtaking Europe in her youthful estimation.
Emma Stone is a stonehearted brute, a callous child pursuing her hedonistic pleasure without knowing what it is or that other people are being hurt. That should have been a good story, but she's too naive and self-centered with a physical age far exceeding her infantile mental age.
It's really the story of the sexual exploitation of a child's brain but made "okay" because that brain has been transferred into her dead mother's body. Which is odd.
The film might have crossed the line at some point, when incest and child rape loom large as the original husband returns to claim his wife/daughter, have sex with her, and imprison her in his castle. He's an imperial European warrior, "the General," after all. Those sex scenes must have been left on the cutting room floor when previewers objected; one would have to check the text.

Fair, old photos, advanced technology and architecture, China's Great Wall...
Willem Dafoe in Planet of the Apes Poor Things
This general is not the first man to try to control Bella or imprison her. The audience is supposed to applaud that she's so willful and not mind that she's so childish. But does anyone applaud her suicide, utilitarian choice to undertake prostitution, or how she breaks the hearts of her "God" (not the tribal god of the Bible but "Dr. Godwin 'God' Baxter," her creator, Willem Dafoe's role as the Dr. Frankenstein) and her betrothed, just about the only two men in the movie she doesn't have sexual relations with, though it's not for lack of trying, her lesbian experimentation, philosophical dabbling, her stealing one man's fortune for a good cause then squandering it so that it doesn't even fulfill that good function... monster, demoness, dummy, child.
Frankenstein author Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in London in 1797. She was the second child of the feminist philosopher, educator, and writer Mary Wollstonecraft and the first child of the philosopher, novelist, and journalist William Godwin (eerily the character of Willem's Godwin). Mary Wollstonecraft died (just like in Poor Things) around the time of her famous daughter's birth. Godwin was left to bring up Mary, just as Dr. Godwin raises Bella like a doting father and caring creator god, in spite of character which is to be scientifically distant and professionally detached just as his medical doctor father was with him.
Great actors age badly: Mark Ruffalo
One then realizes how well Mark Ruffalo is playing his role. His character is interesting, almost making him the real protagonist of the movie, which probably explains why they have to disappear him and leave him unexplained. What happened to him? When he shows up by surprise to present the great volta at another very pivotal moment for her betrothed, he doesn't look at her, calls her a demon (and it's hard to disagree), exacts his revenge, and bam, that's it for him. The most enjoyable performance in the whole movie, and he's gone. Was he eliciting too much sympathy and approval from the test audiences? Did Ruffalo win an Oscar best supporting actor?
C'est la vie. You can't win them all any.
That Emma [Sad]Stone beat Lily Gladstone, the first Native American to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar -- by the way, why does Hollywood insist we say "actor" for both males and females everywhere except at the Academy Awards? -- is understandable.
Hollywood loves Stone (remembering her charming Academy Award-winning performance in Lalaland with Ryan "Ken" Gosling), and the role was a supporting role that should have been in that category up against The Holdovers' Black winner. Either way, it was up to Scorsese to accentuate her and downplay bad guy Leonardo DiCaprio, who makes atrocious killers of flower moons seem sympathetic with his acting.

I deserve this more than Gladstone. Sorry if they gave it to me. It's no one's fault. #statusquo

Others recognized my contribution to film.
Lily Gladstone snubbed at Oscars, sparking uproar about old Academy and its disgusting lack of inclusion and opportunity.
Native American actor Lily Gladstone (the titular lead actress in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, actually supporting Leonardo DiCaprio in his starring role alongside co-lead Robert De Niro, about the super-rich Osage tribe, at one time comprising the richest people in the world murdered by white people for their money, a shocking true story).
Quick, throw Ken in for some much needed comic relief. And show Margot's reaction.
.
1st movie predicted Easy A[wards]
Lily Gladstone was nominated for Best Actress at the 96th annual Academy Awards for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon — and many people are furious she was overlooked in favor of white Emma Stone, who was previously awarded this prize for Lala Land.
If Gladstone had been recognized on Sunday night, she would have become the first Native American person ever to win an Academy Award, aka an Oscar. the Native American woman who went up to accept the Best Actor award that one time was just picking it up for Marlon Brando, as he was making a statement about the Academy and its insular possibly racist outlook on movies.
This isn't about race because, well, it just isn't!
Gladstone received near-universal acclaim for her performance as real-life figure Mollie Burkhart in Scorsese's film, which chronicled the series of real-life murders by whites of tribal members of the Osage Nation, known as the Reign of Terror.
Set in 1920s Osage County, Oklahoma, the white killers were involved in a plot to steal the rights to the Native's oil-rich land.
Gladstone, who is from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, previously made history when she was first nominated for the award as she became the first Native American woman to ever be put forward.
However, she is not the first Indigenous nominee for Best Actress, with previous contenders including Yalitza Aparicio for 2018's Roma and Keisha Castle-Hughes for 2003's Whale Rider. Both women also didn't go on to be recognized with an award from the Academy.
"Academy too white" and variations on this theme were all the rage in previous years. How little has changed, and that's what the public is mad about, not just Native Americans. It's the movie business, not the movie social reform movement through cinema or movie pastime. What can be done? Mass protests, boycotts, BDS? Let's boycott, sanction, and divest from the Hollywood apparatus and cable TV. No more Netflix. Now it's time to found a representative media. The really sad thing is that a movie about the oppression of the Indigenous people is what revealed how that oppression, that slow genocide and erasure, is continuing.
Y'all are actually oppressing us in our country!
Near the Osage Nation in Oklahoma, an atrocity happened to wealthy and prosperous Black people. White neighbors could not bare it, so they entered "Black Wall Street" business district, where the largest concentration of Black professionals in the U.S. were at that time, and they murdered, massacred, and barrel bombed the Black population, burning down their businesses and homes to level out the playing field so that white could be the master race again after slavery had ended. Neither Native Americans nor Blacks have recovered from these horrible incidents, these historical atrocities. Instead, many whites blame Black and BIPOCs for their downtrodden status, never mind who did the trotting on them to put them back in "their place." It's not a two class society. It's much more complex than that. And the racism, implicit bias, prejudice, systemic inequality and lack of opportunity all quite predictably point in the direction of the outcomes we see in our society for the second-, third-, and fourth-class citizens.
The answer? Grin and bear it, and shut the H up about it. Like it or lump it. Take it or leave it. Go back to your own country. You're from here? Oh, well, who cares? Go find somewhere else to live.
A blonde bombshell was snubbed for playing a doll;
a man was nominated for playing a doll;
a woman was nominated for playing a baby (sort of);
a Jewish scientist was lauded for making genocide possible with a single bomb. Oops, this is Hollywood, so we better scratch that one off the list now that Steven Spielberg doesn't make easy winners anymore.
Ten pictures will vie to be considered "best." Let's talk about what happened.
Oppenheimer received 13 Oscar nominations.
Not nominated were director Greta Gerwig after being lauded for her super contribution to society and the world for writing the Barbie movie. Writers don't usually get credit, so that's okay. Bottle blond actress Margot Robbie is sure to outshine her with her beauty and take the gold. Nope. No nomination for the human barbie doll. (And we don't mean Amatue, aka "Human Barbie" Valeria Lukyanova, who is making her own low budget films in Ukraine but being spiritual about it).
I'm like Nazi psychic Vril Oracle Maria Orsic.
Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer. All hail. Whether Christopher Nolan is anyone's speed or not, the Academy loves him. Oppenheimer, Nolan's drama about the man who developed the atomic bomb, led all films with 13 nominations in both what are sometimes considered "major" categories (like best picture, best director, best actor, and adapted screenplay) and "technical" categories (like sound, production design and visual effects). It's not a record; a couple of other films, including Titanic, have received 14. Still, it's a very big total.
Jewish (and pro-Israel blank) Amy Schumer was going to write and play a large Barbie, and critic Jason Nathanson asks, "Would we be here if she had?" (KFI AM 640)
In another year, Poor Things' 11 nominations or Killers of the Flower Moon's 10 might have led the nominations. This makes director Martin Scorsese the most nominated ever, even if he has only won one. But not up against this kind of — forgive the phrase — explosive acclaim.
Sofia (Danielle Brooks) and Celie (Fantasia Barrino) in the 2023 reincarnation of The Color Purple get attention. Brooks was nominated for her supporting performance.
A couple of contenders came up empty or nearly so. There were a lot of films that elbowed their way into big nominations; that's what you get when you start with 10 best picture nominees.
But both Origin, the latest film from director Ava DuVernay, and All of Us Strangers, the love story starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, were left out of the nominations.
The Color Purple musical adaptation was nominated only for Danielle Brooks' supporting performance — a richly deserved nod, by the way. More
