Rock-cut Buddhist temple cave: Karla

Carved Straight from the Bedrock: The Great Chaitya Cave of India
(Ancient Architects) Oct. 7, 2025: There are a number of famous examples of enigmatic rock-cut architecture in the world. India is one place in particular that is famous for its manmade (deva-made) caves.

There are the famous Buddhist Ellora Caves that date back to 600-1000 AD, which includes the breathtaking and seemingly impossible Kailasa Temple, the Ajanta caves, which are even older, but there are also the lesser-known Karla Caves.

They are not all as elaborate as the others, but it is a site that should certainly be on everyone's radar. The Karla Caves are located near Lonavala, Maharashtra, a complex of amazing ancient Buddhist Indian temples carved directly from bedrock, dating back from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD.

Maharashtra has many larger examples of artificial (human-made) cave networks, but Cave 8 at Karla, known as The Grand Chaitya Cave, is the largest and most completely preserved chaitya hall of the period with beautiful, ornate architecture, featuring many examples of fine sculpture. Watch this video to find out more about this human wonder of the world.

Buddhism's Karla Caves, India
Magnificent rock-cut hollow hall with stupa
The Karla Caves (also Karli Caves, Karle Caves, Karla Cells) are a complex of ancient Buddhist Indian rock-cut caves at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra State.

The site is 10.9 kms from Lonavala. Others in the area include Bhaja Caves, Patan Buddhist Cave, Bedse Caves, and Nasik Caves.

The shrines were developed over the period from the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BCE, having arisen near a major ancient trade route, running eastward from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan.

The group at Karla is one of the older and smaller of the many rock-cut Buddhist sites in Maharashtra, India.

It is one of the best-known because of the famous "Grand Chaitya" (Cave 8), the largest and most completely preserved chaitya hall of the period, containing unusual quantities of fine sculpture on a large scale [1].

Many traders, Western Satraps of Saka [aka Shakyian, Scythian] origin and Satavahana rulers made grants for construction and support of these caves.

Karla's location in Maharashtra places it in a region that marks the division between North India and South India [2].

Buddhists, having become identified with commerce and manufacturing through their early association with traders, tended to locate their monastic establishments in natural geographic formations close to major trade routes so as to provide lodging houses for travelling traders [3].

Today, the cave complex is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India [4]. More

Salt: A World History

Salt: World History (Kurlansky)
Best-selling author Mark Kurlansky turns his attention to a common household item with a long and intriguing history: salt. The only rock we eat, salt has shaped civilization from the very beginning, and its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of humankind. A substance so valuable it served as currency (Latin sal, which gives us our word "salary," our ration of life-sustaining sodium chloride used as wages), salt has influenced the establishment of trade routes and cities, provoked and financed wars, secured empires, and inspired revolutions. Populated by colorful characters and filled with an unending series of fascinating details, Salt is a supremely entertaining, multi-layered masterpiece. More

See Led Zep's Robert Plant live (5/6)

I like me a bit of Zen on me own without the lads. Wish Jimmy had played on more tracks.
.

I'll never get old but will just get better.
Who? There's this British guy, a old hippie, who became famous for his bluesy caterwauling in front of Jimmy Page's magnificent guitar work. Robert Plant was the frontman for the biggest rock band in the world (ahead of pop stars like The Beatles, The Stones, The Black Flag, and LA's own Wasted Youth, plus a million other small bands few have ever heard of). The great thing about Plant was not just that he was a good singer and a rockstar, but rather that he may have written some intelligent lyrics for the band, words akin to the intelligent stuff Pink Floyd was putting out in London's Acid Scene in the Sixties.

Robert Plant's Carry Fire
Has been Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame plays live, even though most of the world has not seen him. They'd like to, of course, but that's assuming he's backed by Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham. That reunion may take a while. However, Plant is singing live for an audience in May 2025.

Led Zeppelin documentary (free)

Led Zeppelin documentary - The North American Tours (1968-77)

FILM REVIEW: Becoming Led Zeppelin

Sometimes music can be a religious experience. Just ask this guy in Switzerland (CNN).
.
Becoming Led Zeppelin (Sony Pictures Classics)
We saw it on an IMAX screen, sitting in the front row heads cranked up to take in the whole screen, for it to be in our faces and extra loud. And that it was. It's good, really good. It's no The Song Remains the Same, which is a filmed concert at Madison Square Garden, New York, in the 1970s with the conceit of introducing them as legendary, bigger-than-life figures, particularly Page, who lived in a castle next to Loch Ness. This is a talking head documentary interspersed with historical footage and tight editing. The most amazing thing about it is that it does not pander to Johnny-come-lately fans. There is no mention of "Stairway to Heaven," their biggest hit ever. This is about the early, heavy days, coming out of nowhere by combining early blues from The States (muddy "Black" music), which a lot of young Brits were hearing for the first time with this new thing called "rock 'n roll."

What's so great about the greatest band ever? - The movie never makes it to 1973 and the Starship

Led Zeppelin band, promo portrait, 1971
Like Elvis and others appropriated the blood, sweat, and tears of post-slavery suffering crystalized into music, so Led Zeppelin paid homage to their heroes and cashed in like those heroes never did. It was blatant with Elvis and not so obvious where Led Zeppelin, most notably lead guitarist Jimmy Page, was coming up with the inspiration for so many catchy riffs (a demon named Zoso, the Devil, spirits of the dead still under contract, lifting ideas from the fertile London scene of his day, entheogenic drugs?), loud amplification, and blending the hardest music anyone had ever heard with plaintive love ballads of the hippie era (late 60s, early 70s). Sadly, there was no mention of the sexual abuse of young groupies, for which they are infamous, or recreational drug use. Some lawyer or PR firm was smart to keep a lid on those facets of their career. The movie ends abruptly with their second album before as they are reaching superstardom. Highly recommended! Fans will love it. Out now in wide release. INFO: becomingledzeppelinfilm.com
