An Uposatha (Sanskrit Upavasatha) day is a Buddhist day of observance, in existence since before the Buddha's time (600 BCE) and still being kept today by Buddhist practitioners as he advised [1, 2].
The Buddha taught that the Uposatha Day is for "the cleansing of the defiled mind/heart," resulting in inner calm and joy [3].
On this day, both lay and ordained members of the sangha (spiritual community) intensify their practice, deepen their knowledge of the Teachings, and express communal commitment through millennia-old acts of lay-monastic reciprocity.
On these days, lay followers make a conscious effort to keep the Eight Precepts or (as the tradition suggests) Ten Precepts of intensive practice, over the ordinary Five Precepts observed all of the rest of the time. In post-religious America, there's finally freedom from religion. Good riddance. But it doesn't change the fact that we are starved for spirituality, a deeper understanding of this reality, and liberation from the mundane.
Life has to mean something, right? It's not a carousel to get on and off of, suffer, and all for what.
Knowing that there is more, sure that spirituality is real with no easy way to access the real thing, we're searching.
It's a monthly lunar observance
And if church was all a big joke (coming from patriarchal bombast, high doses of hypocrisy, Catholicism, Protestantism, rigidity, and offensive, regressive bull chips), it did nevertheless provide some much-needed things for Americans: community, participation, identity, meaning, culture, friendship, and the like. What will take its place?
Buddhism provides Sangha (a spiritual community), mindfulness, meditation, yoga (an adjunct tradition), calm, relaxation, insight, and the hope of enlightenment and liberation. To get it all, we have a good time bouncing between Buddhist temples and meditation centers, Quaker Friends Meeting House and Universalist Unitarianism. Anyone who thinks Christians are all bad would be surprised how liberal, open minded, welcoming, and unpretentious some Sunday services are.
Buddhist temples remain awfully culture-specific, serving an ethnic community more than the general public. Universalists are nice, so much so that many traditional Christians would be outraged. In Pasadena, for example, we joined the Wiccan choir. Were we pagans, were we freethinkers, were we labelled at all? It was great to sing in unison at Neighborhood Church, a UU school and chapel with more than one Buddhist group meeting there. There were social justice groups and lots of families... We didn't know an organization calling itself a "church" could be like this.
THE QUAKERS
We're actually Mennonite Amish, not Quakers
Friends, as Quakers call one another, are the biggest surprise. They don't sell oats. They probably don't even eat 'em. That was a stinky marketing campaign by the QO Corporation, stealing the likeness of a group everyone at the time knew as honest and trustworthy. Quakers never made a penny from the campaign or big buckle hat. Quakers have been at the forefront of American progressivism for centuries, opposing slavery and injustice, holding Sunday services in silence rather than preaching. One would never guess. The whole movement needs a PR campaign so we all stop being deceived by appearances and assumptions. The worst thing is they themselves are so reluctant to explain or apply labels.

"Where is the 'quaking'? Does it begin by shaking, a tremble, a tic? Is one slain by faith, falling to one's knees holding a snake and speaking in tongue, the spirit of the Pentecost, the Holy Ghost or Pneuma all up on ya like a sloppy pigeon? Nothing could be further from the truth. And, two, why does the only thing known about this religion have nothing to do with this religion? That Quaker Oats box has to go, or someone should start marketing a Cheerios like box Jesus-Os, where the little grain-based lifesavers swimming in the almond milk are halos: Jesus brand Haley'Os, now with Mother of God land of milk and honey flavored. Wouldn't Christians of the future be p-o'd to have to keep explaining that their religion has nothing to do with an iconic cereal box?

Today we traveled from Los Angeles proper to the outskirts, the deep suburbs, nearly to the border of the county to get to the Mindfulness Meditation Center of Covina for the Buddhist Sabbath, the Uposatha, or lunar observance day.
We dressed all in white, took the Eight Precepts for the day, got fed a rich diet of island delicacies from Sri Lanka (the teardrop shaped nation off the southern tip of India). This ancient Theravada Buddhist practice was implemented by the historical Buddha, following a long tradition of setting aside a weekly spiritual day of practice.
Twenty-five of us suited up in the traditional garb, sat on backrest meditation seats on the ground with a cushion or little chairs if one prefers.
Everything hard and austere about it is softened. It's torture to sit IF one's mind is torturing one; otherwise, it is quite nice. It is incredibly hot outside, in the 100s, but inside we have AC in a hospital, museum setting, very well-appointed hall with cool stone floors.
It's the "fasting day," we'll starve! It's impossible to starve. First, breakfast gets served. Lunch, with seconds, is at 11:30 am. And to top off the day, there is the English lecture ("Mindfulness of Thoughts") in the Dharma classroom (as listed in the Rains Retreat Schedule) after which dinner is served.
"Fasting" means only eating between dawn and noon. This is the way Buddhist monastics live everyday all their lives. It's a very healthy way to be so long as one avoids processed foods and sweets, which many do not. To do it one day a week is not asking much, and if it is, it's only once a month on the full moon. In yoga, complete fasting is sometimes recommended on the full moon for health reasons. But few in the U.S. follow yoga recommendations beyond the poses. Dinner was served?
One takes the Eight Precepts in the morning and then returns to the Five Precepts at the end of the day about 4:30 pm. So one is no longer restricted in eating. Of course, it would be good to go home, continue the fast, and meditate. But one can stay, as a sutra is being discussed in Sinhalese in the "church" part of the center with pews and the English Dharma talk is taking place in the classroom for meditation. After which, dinner is served and anyone who wore white and spent the day is more than welcome to partake.

World-famous Afghan Buddhas of Bamiyan
Buddhism in Central Asia may sound strange, but Buddhism really began in Central Asia (a place some might call the Stans), where the Buddha was born and raised: Scythia, Saka, Gandhara. While legend has him in Nepal, Dr. Ranajit Pal and archeology corrects that notion.

The largest Buddhist monuments and monasteries in the world are in modern Afghanistan, and they did not arrive there via the Silk Road transmission but had already been there even as Bihar was populated with so many Vihar's that it got its name as an Indian state. They were celebrating their native son, who returned seven years after he set off on his quest. There was no "India" at that time, only Magadha and other independent kingdoms that were united two centuries later by Buddhist Emperor Ashoka. In these strange and little-known countries there are Buddhist artifacts that make little sense until one places "Scythiamuni" Buddha in his proper context, in a land from in and around Indo-Saka-stan.

C'mon, Wisdom Quarterly, everybody knows "Bigfoot" is just a fairytale mothers tell their kids so they won't leave the tent at night or stray too far from the campground in the day. Nobody actually believes it, not any adult with a brain unless. Maybe a hick or a hayseed. Even The Why Files is just trying to scare up views. Hecklefish Moriarty is kidding! What evidence is there? And don't gimme none of that plaster footprints cr*p or blurry videos bullsl*p, or human testimonials or unidentifiable hair samples, or unexplained DNA in scat, or distant photos, or what old national park rangers admit in private, or new analyses of the Gimlin-Patterson footage. That's just a guy in a monkey suit!

Do we believe? We do. Why? In Buddhism, these creatures would properly be classified as "ogres" (yakkhas, yakshis/yetis, rakshasas). They are very smart and, though potentially brutal cannibals, they have powers.
The most convincing evidence is not presented here but was provided by Lloyd Pye who pointed out that about 20,000 plaster casts of bipedal giants from around the world have something on them that we are never told: fingerprints.
Did Bubba 'n Jebediah sit there and carve them as a final touch on their wooden foot?

Moreover, Dr. Melba Ketchum provided all the scientific evidence anyone would ever need, including DNA and physical samples. Along with the work of Det. David Paulides (Missing 411) and BFRO, How much evidence is enough to believe?Of course, anyone will seem naive and idiotic to believe before seeing the evidence. But having examined it, one is foolish to say it's all only myth and a series of hoaxes. These creatures are real, all over the world, and the Indigenous people know and have known it all along. It's not just Sasquatch (Salishsesqet) but Almas and Yeti.

High strangeness Bigfoot
RakkhasΔ(Sanskrit rakshasa) is a class of "demons," according to G. P. Malalasekera, living beings on earth that are chiefly nocturnal and harmful. They usually have their haunt in the water and devour humans when bathing there. Some of them live in the sea (e.g., Thag.v.931; SN. vs. 310; J.i.127; vi. 469; DhA.i.367; iii.74; Mhv.xii.45, etc.)
Yakkhas in many Buddhist accounts are hideous ogres reborn in their ugly form because of karma (deeds) committed in past lives as humans [12], "demons," "devils," animals, or other creatures. Some are benevolent.
One malevolent yakkha, named Silesaloma, appears in the Jataka Tales (Buddhist "Birth Stories") of the Pali language canon. In the story "Prince Five-Weapons and the Sticky-Haired Devil" [13] Silesaloma is described as being the height of a palm tree, with sharp teeth, two yellow tusks, and a coat of thick, matted fur.
The Quantum Bigfoot
The Bodhisatta at that time named Prince Panchayudha ("Five-Weapons") attempts to take down Silesaloma, but all his attacks, with weapons and his bare hands, are thwarted by Silesaloma's sticky fur.
Ultimately, Prince Panchayudha impresses Silesaloma with his bravery, and the ogre decides to let him go.
Prince Panchayudha explains that Silesaloma's monstrous state was brought about by unskillful deeds in past lives. He teaches Silesaloma the Five Precepts:

to undertake the training to abstain from all killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants that occasion heedless behavior (which are not just Buddhist practices but existed from time immemorial as standards of humane behavior that lead to rebirth in the human world.
After this Silesaloma gives up violence and transforms into a benevolent and protective forest dweller [12].
NOTE: What are these cryptid creatures, human or nonhuman, physical or supernatural, protective or demonic, well-born or beastly? Yes. According to famous Buddhist scholar G. P. Malalasekera in his Dictionary of Pali Proper Names: They are of many different kinds: nature spirits, ogres, dryads, ghosts, ghouls, spooks. In the early Buddhist records, yakkha ("giant creature"), like nΔgΔ ("mighty being"), as an appellative, was anything but depreciative. Thus, not only is Sakka, king of the devas ("angels, gods"), so referred to (M.i.252; J.iv.4; DA.i.264), but even the Buddha is spoken of as a yakkha in poetic diction (M.i.386).
