On first listen, the quirky song seems to be totally bizarre with no clear meaning or structure. However, on deeper inspection, the musicianship behind the song is nothing short of genius. Plus, it holds a much deeper and meaningful message than anyone might realize. Let's take a look at the full story behind the creation of this song and uncover its true meaning. I'm Afraid w/ Danny Elfman (Three Poisons)
Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma Bu Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly; Danny Elfman (lyrics)
![]() |
| At the hub of the Wheel of Rebirth are greed, hatred, and delusion on which its turning hinges. |
According to the Buddha, there are Three Poisons, mental defilements that degrade the mind/heart, and serve as the root-motivations for all unskillful karma (unwholesome actions).
What are they? Roughly speaking -- because these are ancient Pali/Sanskrit terms only approximately translatable into English -- they are:
- Greed (attraction, passion, craving, desire, liking, or lobha)
- Hatred (aversion, fear, revulsion, disliking, or dosa), and
- Delusion (wrong view, distortion, perversion, ignorance, or moha).
The common English translation of "greed, hatred, and delusion" of technical Buddhist terms is misleading because it makes it seem as if only the extremes of these motives are unskillful karma.
In fact, at any intensity they lead to disappointment (dukkha, a term that extends from agitation to agony) as soon as they arise. For each term, the meaning spans the entire range of the word
- from liking, bias, preference, and passion to greed,
- from disliking, annoyance, fearing, and revulsion to hatred,
- from not knowing, wrong view, misunderstanding, and distortion to delusion.
The motives (causes and conditions) for all skillful deeds, wholesome or meritorious karma, are the opposites:
- Nongreed (letting go, sharing, giving, generosity, detaching, non-clinging, or alobha).
- Nonhatred (friendliness, loving-kindness, compassion, joy in others' joy, or adosa).
- Nondelusion (wisdom, knowing-and-seeing, right view, undistorted understanding, or amoha).
They make more sense in positive terms, but each word is a category encompassing the entire range of degrees.
Reflect and examine it. When we do something unskillful, unwholesome, or wrong, what is at the root of it? We are making demeritorious karma (that will bear fruit and ripen in unpleasant, unwelcome, unwished for, disappointing, and painful results).
Entering one of the subterranean hells below Los Angeles: 6th Dimension*
They are called "bad" not because a God doesn't like them but because we will not like their karmic results (vipaka and phala) when they finally ripen, which might not be for a long time. (Some deeds are avyฤkata, indeterminate or neutral).
- DETAILS AND REFERENCES: The Roots of Good and Evil: Buddhist Texts translated from the Pali language with comments and introduction by Western Buddhist monk Ven. Nyanaponika (Wheel #251/252/253, BPS.lk)
- Is fear hate? Both are manifestations of aversion (dosa), so fear may be distinguished from hate, but it's only a matter of our reaction to stimuli. In fear, we want to run away, whereas in hate we want to send the repulsive object away).

Karma is like a seed that comes to fruition later. The famous Judeo-Christian expression of this karmic principle is that "We shall reap what we sow." In other words, we will later harvest what we previously planted.
The Three Poisons of the mind/heart are easy to recognize in ourselves if we reflect, except for hate. Of course we like things. This is a carnal world within the Sensual Sphere (Kama-Loka). Pleasure-seeking is the main defilement that got us here and that gets us into trouble while we're here by motivating more greedy, selfish, lustful acts. However, all craving is rooted in ignorance.
Ignorance is the fundamental root of all problems and all suffering. Ignorance gives rise to desire, to craving and clinging to things we imagine are persisting, pleasurable, and real.
The Buddha's teaching on the Three Marks of Existence tells us that they are not any of these three things. All conditioned phenomena (all "things" composed of other things that depend for their existence on constituent elements or factors) are:
- hurtling toward destruction,
- disappointing and incapable of fulfilling us,
- impersonal/empty/without essence.
They are not compacts but compounds, not unconditioned (like nirvana, the sole "unconditioned element"*) but conditioned (like everything else, every element, every fabrication, every formation).
- *Asankhata: the "unformed, unoriginated, unconditioned" is a name for nirvana, the "further shore," that is beyond the beyond of all becoming (rebirth) and all conditions. See Bhikkhu Bodhi's As It Is for a textual definition of nirvana (called nibbana in Pali), which too often gets confused with "nothingness" or "annihilation" or "eternal life," when it is none of these things.
In the West we are not raised to recognize or admit our hatred. We are reluctant to show anger, instead suppressing and repressing it. This root (dosa) more often finds expression in the socially acceptable form of FEAR. It's still aversion. It's still unskillful karma that leads to unwise actions that yield painful results.

Surf's up. Video captured the terrifying moment Southern California beachgoers were slammed into by a massive rogue wave in Ventura County on Thursday. The incident happened as locals were being warned about a massive swell pounding the Southern California coastline this week.
The rogue wave submerged bystanders at Pierpont Beach on Seaward Ave. around 11:00 am. That area has been hit the hardest with what the National Weather Service called “tremendous wave energy.”

Million-and-a-half dollar Buddha stolen in LA

$1.5 million ancient Buddha statue stolen from Los Angeles art gallery
![]() |
| Budai: Kano Koi Hotei, Edo Period |
The bronze sculpture was stolen on Sept. 18 from the Barakat Gallery on La Cienega Blvd. in Beverly Grove, Los Angeles, around 3:45 am, officials said.
Weighing 250 pounds, the artifact dates back to Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1867), according to gallery owners. It was believed to have been commissioned for the centerpiece of a temple.
“I prize it so much,” said Fayez Barakat, the gallery's owner. “I had it in the backyard of my home and when I moved into this gallery, I put it in the backyard of the gallery for everybody to admire and enjoy.”
Security video shows the thief pulling up to the gallery in a moving truck. The driver steps out, breaks open a driveway gate, enters the gallery, and uses a dolly to move the statue into the truck.
The entire heist took around 25 minutes, the owner said.
“This gentleman came and, I think, strapped a rope or a chain around that piece and pulled it to his rental van and put it in the back,” Barakat said.
Barakat said he acquired the statue more than 55 years ago and that there is no other piece in the world quite like it.
“We have 200 objects back there, but this is our prize piece,” said Paul Henderson, the gallery’s director. “I don’t think there’s another like it on the market anywhere. It’s four feet tall, it’s hollow cast bronze, and it’s a stunning piece.
“It’s really aesthetically arresting, and it’s shocking to see something like this go missing.” Barakat believes the theft was premeditated due to the sculpture’s prominent display in the gallery’s outdoor space.
There were hundreds of other valuable items that could’ve been stolen as well, but only the Buddha statue was targeted. He believes the thief seemed to have their heart set on this specific artifact. More

Future changes Past: Retro-causality (video)

| The Buddha was the wisest of all wise people. |
But think of all the ways in which this is true. This is even more true than one would have thought by lived experience. Mitch Horowitz quoted the cutting-edge experiments of one scientist who concluded that one could study or practice in the future to benefit in the present (which in the future will be the past). The future will change the past? Poppycock!
He was crucified for such counterintuitive and backwards thinking. Horowitz waited, and a decade later that first work had been confirmed, statistically demonstrated, and backed by a meta study (which aggregates and analyzes the statistics of many studies to avoid bias in any single study). Now it's confirmed science.
But it was true -- and we could see that retro-causality was true -- in a much simpler way. What does anything mean except how we look back on it? The present is very brief, the future never arrives, but the past is massive, long-lasting, and always growing. We run out of a future, but we always have the past. In any case, these are arbitrary imposed categories for the reality of the "eternal now," just the way we divide and label it.
The wise old farmer

Who can say, who can say? the old man answers almost optimistically.
The next day the military sweeps through the town and forcibly inducts all able-bodied young men. The old farmer's neighboring come to him crying, "Oh, our sons! Our sons! You're so lucky yours has that broken leg and wasn't taken away, aren't you?"
![]() |
| Alcoholic? (Kirk Franklin) |
"Who can say, who can say?" the old farmer says somewhat pessimistically.
The next day the old farmer's barn catches on fire, and without the help of his son, who's leg is still broken and keeping him in bed, he is unable to extinguish the fire.
The neighbors return, snickering and saying what a pity it is his son couldn't help, asking the old farmer if he sees now how terrible it is that his son's leg is broken.
![]() |
| Lao Tzu, like Socrates, had something to say. |
The next day...and on and on. He well knows the meaning of what happened in the past (his son's broken leg) has no fixed meaning. It is given that meaning by what happens in the future. The future dictates the MEANING of the past, as much or more than it works the other way around.
What do we actually see in the present as we move into the future? Only the past

| This is happening: We row only looking back. |
How does time work in our imagination? It is like a boat, and we are sitting at the helm looking forward.

| "May the bridges I burn light the way." |
In their imagination, the future is ahead, we are in the present looking backward at the past. As the boat moves forward into the future, the captain at the helm doesn't see the future at all. All that person sees is the past coming into sharp relief, where s/he has been.

Our deva/divine powers deteriorate. Average lifespan shortens over the long term (even as it grows and shrinks in the short term) in the Kali Yuga (Dark and Declining Age) and later grows longer in the coming "Golden Age" or Sattva Yuga, cycles within cycles (as explained by the Buddha in the Agganna Sutta or "The Knowledge of Beginnings Discourse/A Buddhist Genesis").
A great quote
.
![]() |
| Can we change the future? |
There is a great quote, one of the world's best, that runs something like: "We cannot change the past, but in the future there's still a chance of it all working out."
It isn't the past that needs changing. The FUTURE will give the PAST its meaning retro-causally. Here's the actual quote by C. S. Lewis: "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending."
- In concrete terms: Buy a stock or precious metal. Will having bought it in the PAST for that price cause a profit or a loss? Only the FUTURE can determine that.
It means the future will impact the past; tomorrow will determine the meaning of yesterday. (WHEN will we know it? Only ever in the present). [But I knew it in the past. Yes, but at that time, the "past" was the present, and THIS was still the future. Oh, yes, of course. Wait, what? There's only now.]
