Ghost Month continues: Shadow Realm

Get outta my way! Hungry ghosts are after me!
"Ghost Month" (the Seventh Month of the Chinese Lunisolar Calendar, corresponding to Sept. 6 to Oct. 6, 2025) is the time of the Ghost Festival (Yulanpen). It is observed among the Chinese diaspora population of the world, particularly in Chinatowns, Malaysia, Singapore, and anywhere Mahayana Buddhism dominates. Hungry ghosts or petas (Sanskrit pretas) are miserable being who have been reborn deprived due to unskillful karma (deeds).
Guanyin feeding (Stephen Asma)
If hungry ghosts,
demons, and malignant spirits are living beings, and Buddhists cherish all sentient beings, how do we exorcise them when they create obstacles in our lives? Why did Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) convert angry subhuman beings into "protectors of the Dharma" (Dharmapalas)? Why did the great Tibetan sage Milarepa have long conversations with ghosts and demons? How do can humans protect against curses and black magic? What are Buddhisms Protective Verses (Parittas), and how do we chant them? These questions are answered in this “Buddhist Guide to Exorcism: A Spirit Handler’s Guide” and demonstrate some of the methods. More: Buddha Weekly

The Hungry Ghost Realm: A Buddhist Teaching of Hope in Addiction

Maha Moggallāna (Ven. Mulian)
(Mythos & Logos) Complete Archives: Mythos & Logos. The Realm of Hungry Ghosts (peta-loka) is a plane of existence in Buddhist cosmology, an unfortunate destination, an afterlife marked by deprivation, suffering, and dependency.

The journey of one of the Buddha's chief disciples, Maha Moggallāna (Sanskrit Maudgalyayana, Chinese Mulian), to this realm provides a first step for how to break the vicious cycle of addiction borne of trauma.

Many of us have a "hungry ghost" (peta, preta) lurking inside of us. If anyone is struggling, please reach out to a professional as there are many great organizations, including ‪@TWLOHA‬, filled with people trained and willing to help.*

See Led Zep's Robert Plant live (5/6)

I like me a bit of Zen on me own without the lads. Wish Jimmy had played on more tracks.
.

I'll never get old but will just get better.
Who? There's this British guy, a old hippie, who became famous for his bluesy caterwauling in front of Jimmy Page's magnificent guitar work. Robert Plant was the frontman for the biggest rock band in the world (ahead of pop stars like The Beatles, The Stones, The Black Flag, and LA's own Wasted Youth, plus a million other small bands few have ever heard of). The great thing about Plant was not just that he was a good singer and a rockstar, but rather that he may have written some intelligent lyrics for the band, words akin to the intelligent stuff Pink Floyd was putting out in London's Acid Scene in the Sixties.

Robert Plant's Carry Fire
Has been Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame plays live, even though most of the world has not seen him. They'd like to, of course, but that's assuming he's backed by Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham. That reunion may take a while. However, Plant is singing live for an audience in May 2025.

Everything feels real, but look closely

Everything feels real…until we look closer
(Solace Fox) Reality feels solid. The past seems fixed. Our thoughts feel like they belong to us. But what if none of it is as real as it seems? Ancient spiritual traditions, philosophers, and scientists have questioned this for centuries. Our mind filters, edits, and reconstructs everything we experience — but why? And what happens when we start noticing the cracks in reality?

Why do we suffer? The power of awareness
What's reality? "F around and find out," they say, so I will dive into this soft pile of snow.

Ego Podcast (Buddhism) Discover the transformative power of awareness to end suffering. This insightful video explores why suffering (dukkha, disappointment) arises and how bare (undistorted, unembellished) awareness — the cornerstone of Buddhist mindfulness practice (sati) — can lead us toward true inner transformation.

Drawing on discourses like the Kalama Sutta, the Buddha reminds us not to simply accept beliefs, but to directly experience reality for ourselves.

This mindful practice of clear, non-judgmental attention is key to understanding the roots of our (emotional, psychological, physical, and existential) pain and breaking free from unskillful reactions and patterns.

(All Time) It's not only a misperception. We live in a simulation
  • Experience trumps belief: the importance of directly experiencing life rather than relying on inherited belief systems
  • How mindful awareness transforms mere knowledge into enlightening insight
  • The role of mindfulness: Why paying bare attention to details — breath, feelings, mind, and objects of mind — is essential for breaking the illusion, gaining inner clarity, and ending delusion
  • How mindfulness helps us observe then let go of unwholesome reactions
  • Practical applications: techniques to observe the mind’s activity without judgment.
  • Ways to replace reactive patterns with skillful responses, paving the path to the end of suffering (nirvana)
  • The bigger picture: how inner awareness not only alleviates personal suffering but also contributes to a more harmonious life.
Join the journey: If ready to explore how bare (unvarnished, unaltered) awareness can end suffering and lead to wisdom, insight, and inner peace, please like, share, and subscribe. Let's walk the Buddha's path of mindfulness together.

How I knew this relationship was over

Joy Canoy, May 28, 2023; Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Unfortunately, the quest to find our one true love, often referred to simply as “The One,” is a universal aspiration shared by everyone.

It is, however, disheartening to acknowledge that simply desiring this connection does not guarantee its attainment, as many individuals have learned through great personal experiences of suffering and turmoil.

Time and time again, hopeful romantics invest their utmost efforts into relationships, only to witness them crumble. Similarly, there are unfortunate individuals who gradually come to the realization that their relationship is not progressing in the most favorable direction, to put it mildly.

Here we find anecdotes shared by individuals recounting the extraordinary moments that led them to understand that their partners were not “The One.”

An NDE occurs when someone dies, is revived, and knows for certain that there is an afterlife -- life after life, life after death.

A distressing NDE like Kathy had happens to 3 in 10 people who have an NDE. For Kathy her NDE both distressed and amazed here, and it changed her life forever. ✨

Strawberry Moon Buddhist Observance

Strawberry Moon June 2023, a year with 13 full moons (The Old Farmer's Almanac)

This weekend's Strawberry Moon
(KTLA 5) June 3, 2023. June's full moon is ripe and ready for a star-filled harvest this weekend. Before it illuminates the sky, here's everything to know about the Strawberry Moon from L.A.'s very own KTLA Channel 5 News, keeping Southern Californians informed since 1947.

Now let's hear from the Buddha, keeping humans and shining ones (devas) informed for nearly 30 centuries:

This is the proper way to consider and think when observing Buddhism's Eight Precepts. [When is it observed? It is observed weekly at each of the four phases of the moon, but the full moon feels like a particularly significant for its observance.

SUTRA: "The Eight Factored Lunar Observance"
"The Lunar Observance with Eight Factors in Brief," Saṅkhittūposatha Sutta (AN 8.41)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One (the Buddha) was living in the City of Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, at the multi-millionaire Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Blessed One addressed the meditators saying, “Meditators!”

“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Blessed One then said this:

“Meditators, the lunar observance (uposatha) with its eight factors is very beneficial, brilliant, and expansive. How should it be observed?

1. “A noble [awakened] disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the full enlightened (arahants) give up [abandon, avoid, abstain from] killing living beings, giving up the cudgel and sword. They are very kind and careful with their behavior and live full of compassion for all living beings. I, too, for this day and night shall give up killing [and causing others to kill] living beings, giving up the cudgel and sword. I shall be very kind and careful with my behavior and live full of compassion for all living beings. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is the uposatha's first factor.

2. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up stealing. They take only what is given and expect only what is [freely] given. They keep themselves blameless by not stealing. I, too, for this day and night shall give up stealing. I shall take only what is given and expect only what is given. I shall keep myself blameless by not stealing. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its second factor.

3. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up noncelibacy. They are celibate, set apart, avoiding the low practice of sex. I, too, for this day and night shall give up noncelibacy. I shall be celibate, set apart, avoiding the low practice of sex. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its third factor.

4. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up lying [false speech, bearing false witness]. They speak the truth and keep to the truth. They are honest and trustworthy and do not trick the world with their words. I, too, for this day and night shall give up lying. I shall speak the truth and keep to the truth. I shall be honest and trustworthy and shall not trick the world with my words. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its fourth factor.

5. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up intoxicating drinks and drugs. I, too, for this day and night shall give up intoxicating drinks and drugs. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its fifth factor.

6. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened eat before noon, giving up eating at night and from eating food from midday until dawn the next day. I, too, for this day and night shall eat before noon, giving up eating at night and from midday until dawn the next day. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its sixth factor.

7. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up dancing, singing, music, seeing shows, beautifying and decorating themselves with flower garlands, perfumes, and makeup. I, too, for this day and night shall give up dancing, singing, music, seeing shows, beautifying and decorating myself with flower garlands, perfumes, and makeup. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its seventh factor.

8. “A noble disciple thinks and considers, ‘As long as they live, the fully enlightened give up luxurious and fancy seats and beds. They sleep in a low place, either a small bed or a straw mat. I, too, for this day and night shall give up luxurious and fancy seats and beds. I shall sleep in a low place, either a small bed or a straw mat. I shall keep the lunar observance by doing as the fully enlightened do in this way.’ This is its eighth factor.

“Indeed, the lunar observance with its eight limbs kept in this way is very fruitful and beneficial, brilliant and expansive.”

Don't let the Devil know anything (Alan Watts)

Alan Watts via Cosmic Jokes. Text: Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma B Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
WARNING: This Dharma talk might rattle long held belief systems of listeners! QOTSA knows:

Don't let the Devil know anything (Alan Watts)
(Cosmic Jokes) Alan Watts talks about karma (intentional action). Escape karma and you escape the Devil. But how can we escape it? The historical Buddha laid down the path. And many are confused by it, including Watts, by confounding what the Buddha taught and what Hindus, Brahmins, and the Vedas teach about karma. It is not necessary to exhaust karma to break free of the cycle of rebirth and suffering. If it were, no one would ever be able to do it, as each act -- whether physical, verbal, or even mental -- lays down seeds that later bear fruit. It's happening all the time. In one life, one lays down enough karma for a thousand future lives or more. It's happening all the time. There's no need to do more, as the number of future lives we already face is endless. This is the problem of samsara, the endless round of birth and death. The solution is calm and mindfulness, which yields liberating insight into the true nature of things, which causes the heart/mind to let go. When one really lets go completely at this deep level, an irreversible change happens. One glimpses nirvana, the highest bliss, and one "changes lineage" from an ordinary worldling to a noble one (arya), having put a limit on how much future suffering is possible. One may yet live for a long time, but now there is a limit. It will no longer be endless and impermanent (dying from moment to moment between deaths and rebirths). Those who say we must exhaust all of our previous karma simply have not understood the historical Buddha's teachings or Dharma. And it is not what any other spiritual tradition teaches -- not Hinduism, Brahmanism, Vedanta, Jainism, Christianity, or New Age beliefs. The real way to "the end of all suffering," which is what nirvana means, is the Buddha's 37 Requisites of Enlightenment implicit in the Ennobling Eightfold Path.

Subscribe. Alan Watts was a well-known British philosopher, writer and speaker, best known for his interpretation of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. Alan Watts left behind more than 25 books and an audio library of nearly 400 talks, which are still in great demand. Alan Watts's life advice will bring you to true freedom. Congratulations on your journey. #AlanWatts #Buddhism #Spirituality

Pema Chodron quote when we don't feel right

Nicole Cameron (elephant journal, 1/11/23); Ananda (DBM), Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
You want to watch the Big Game rather than come with me to yoga class to get closer?
.
Author Nicole Cameron (elephant journal)
Lately, I’ve had the sensation that I’m crawling out of my skin. It’s a constant state of discomfort -- of not being able to sit without feeling antsy.

[It's a feeling] of not being able to lay down without adjusting and readjusting, of feeling like there’s something I’m forgetting to do, of wanting things to feel “just right” but not being able to reach that imaginary point.

I’m not drowning in unhappiness, and I’m not facing major personal drama at the moment. In fact, things feel relatively calm on one level.
Listen to my podcast, Nicole! I'm Sahara Rose!
On another level, there’s a buzz of excitement…of plans and moments that I’m looking forward to. And still, my mind and body struggle to relax. I try to rest, to listen to meditations and will my mind to settle. I pray and light candles and sage [smudge] my space until I get scared I’m going to set the smoke detector off.

I move my body. I stretch and do yoga sun salutations. I dance salsa and swing my kettle bell. I breathe and bend and squat until it feels like my legs are begging for mercy. But that current of discomfort remains a quiet, nagging whisper.

Kendall is miserable when she gets anxious.
My anxiety likes to convince me that this feeling is proof that something is wrong or that if something isn’t wrong right now, it’s most certainly coming ― so I better be ready.
My stubbornness tells me that I just haven’t found the right cure, the right mix of self-care practices, that will allow me to chill the f*ck out. That maybe a different meditation or podcast or ritual will do the trick.

My optimism tells me that I just need to be more gracious, that I need to be outwardly thankful for all the good in my life. That if I can focus more on the positive, those antsy feelings will slowly disappear.

American Buddhist nun Pema Chodron understands
My anger tells me that I’m holding something in that needs to burst out, that it’s time to take all my latent frustration out on whoever is closest, consequences be damned.

My rational mind tells me I need to call my therapist. The truth is that I could try all of these things and still feel like I want to bust out of my skin.

...Instead, I can be guided by these words from American Vajrayana Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön:

“We think that if we just meditated enough or jogged enough or ate perfect food, everything would be perfect. But from the point of view of someone who is awake, that’s death. Seeking security or perfection, rejoicing in feeling confirmed and whole, self-contained and comfortable, is some kind of death. It doesn’t have any fresh air. There’s no room for something to come in and interrupt all that. We are killing the moment by controlling our experience.”

As crappy as this feeling is, it is also proof of life ― of my life in this moment. It is my fresh air. More
