What's worse, Satan or Heartbreak?
| 18 fascinating facts about Nina Persson |
Long, long ago, there was this cool Swedish band that used to do covers, as most new bands are wont to do. Like nearly everyone else, they covered Black Sabbath standards. They are so catchy, easy, and powerful, that it's a good way to get a rock 'n roll career going. But the band was The Cardigans with an ice princess for a singer, one with a saccharine voice and looks. Some member, possibly the drummer, said, "I know! Let's cover the most iconic and evil Black Sabbath song, a song so evil they named themselves after it!"
And so "Heartbreaker" was born. Now, no Cardigans fan knows it's "Black Sabbath," and no Sabbath fans know who the F The Cardigans are, but evil is evil, and a rock 'n roll classic is a classic for a reason (or it may have something to do with the Devil's note, the tritone).
Now, in Christianity, "Satan" is the source of all evil, all harm, all bad things. He's like the counterpart to a jerk allegedly all-powerful God who is all "good." But satan really means the "adversary," any adversary, as in divorce court.

[Verse 1] No, not again/ Oh, what a man/ Just who I thought that I wanted to have/ Oh, don't do that/ Don't use that bat/ That's all it takes to make me falling flat/ [Pre-Chorus 1] No, not again/ A loser I am// [CHORUS] I love you tonight/ You are my knight/ Cure and assure and make me feel alright/ Tomorrow you'll find/ I'm not around/ But don't be uptight 'cause I loved you last night// [Verse 2] Vacant and free/ Yeah, that is me/ Just tell me how and I'll please you for free/ Tell me I'm good/ I know I'm bad/ Lies make me feel fine although it is sad/ [Pre-Chorus 2] No, not again/ Not one more man// [CHORUS] I love you tonight/ You are my knight/ Cure and assure and make me feel alright/ Tomorrow you'll find/ I'm not around/ But don't be uptight 'cause I loved you last night/ Right?

Pantera: 'Broken'? Addiction recovery
(Loudwire - Clips) How rockstar Phil Anselmo of Pantera finally quit hard drugs. Walk amongst the dead on a trip to hell:
In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction
![]() |
| Man, this is cool, this is the life 😭 |
Blending first-person accounts, riveting case studies, cutting-edge research and passionate argument, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts takes a panoramic yet highly intimate look at this widespread and perplexing human ailment.
Countering prevailing theories of addiction as being a genetic disease or an individual moral failure, addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Maté, M.D., presents an eloquent case that addiction – all addiction – is in fact a case of human development gone askew.
No substance (not heroin, meth, crack) is addictive. If it were, everyone who took it would become addicted. They do not. We become addicted because we are predisposed by a history of early child trauma. Combined with substances or behaviors, drug use leads to addiction.
(Dr. Gabor Maté, M.D.)
Dr. Maté, who for 12 years practiced medicine in Vancouver, Canada’s notorious Downtown Eastside – North America’s most concentrated area of drug use, begins by telling the stories of his patients who, in their destitution and uniformly tragic histories, represent one extreme of the addictive spectrum.
With trademark compassion and unflinching narrative eye, Dr. Maté brings to life their ill-fated and mostly misunderstood struggle for relief or escape -- through substance abuse -- from the pain that has tormented them since childhood.
Dr. Maté shows how the behavioral addictions of society’s more fortunate members – including himself – differ only in degree of severity from the drug habits of his Downtown Eastside patients.
In reality there is only one addiction process, its core objective being the self-soothing of deep-seated fears and discomforts.
Turning to the neurobiological roots of addiction, Dr. Maté presents an astonishing array of scientific evidence showing conclusively that:
- Addictive tendencies arise in the parts of our brains governing some of our most basic and life-sustaining needs and functions: incentive and motivation, physical and emotional pain relief, the regulation of stress, and the capacity to feel and receive love;
- These brain circuits develop, or don’t develop, largely under the influence of the nurturing environment in early life, and that therefore addiction represents a failure of these crucial systems to mature in the way nature intended; and
- The human brain continues to develop new circuitry throughout the lifespan, including well into adulthood, giving new hope for people mired in addictive patterns. Dr. Maté then examines the current mainstream. More

Ouch, it's National Breakup Day 💔
National Breakup Day: reflect, grow, move on
![]() |
| May the Force be with you...but not today. |
Love hurts, and breaking up hurts worse. So hu-man up! Don't act like such a clingy ghost. That is to say, get out of Buddhist cosmology's Realm of Hungry Ghosts. If you can't help it, talk to addiction medicine specialist Dr. Gabor Maté, who says we can become addicted to anything, even a partner (even though no person, sexual act, or substance is, in and of itself, addictive. If it were, everyone partaking would become an addict, and they don't. So why did we? It's because of our history of early childhood traumas. We are predisposed. That history combined with pleasant dopamine-pleasures = hardcore addiction. And today is the day we are disposed.
Now are ye undeceived.*
It gives singles -- and even those who are attached in a committed relationship, marriage, or handfasting -- a day to reflect on past relationships and realize our own personal growth gained from those experiences.

| Let's stand by this star as the world burns. |
“Lo! there ye stand, my children,” said the figure, in a deep and solemn tone, almost sad, with its despairing awfulness, as if his once angelic [now demonic] nature could yet mourn for our miserable [human] race.
“Depending upon one another’s hearts, ye had still hoped that virtue were not all a dream! Now are ye undeceived! — Evil is the nature of [hu]mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome, again, my children, to the communion of your race!”
“Welcome!” repeated the fiend-worshippers, in one cry of despair and triumph. And there they stood, the only pair, as it seemed, who were yet hesitating on the verge of wickedness, in this dark world.
A basin was hollowed, naturally, in the rock. Did it contain water, reddened by the lurid light? or was it blood? or, perchance, a liquid flame? Herein did the Shape of Evil dip his hand, and prepare to lay the mark of baptism upon their foreheads, that they might be partakers of the mystery of sin, more conscious of the secret guilt of others, both in deed and thought, than they could now be of their own.
The husband cast one look at his pale wife, and Faith at him. What polluted wretches would the next glance show them to each other, shuddering alike at what they disclosed and what they saw!
“Faith! Faith!” cried the husband. “Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One!”
Whether Faith obeyed, he knew not. Hardly had he spoken, when he found himself amid calm night and solitude, listening to a roar of the wind, which died heavily away through the forest. He staggered against the rock, and felt it chill and damp, while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew ("Young Goodman Brown" classic American literature, 1835 short story about 17th century Puritan New England).
If only the Buddha had had anything to say about suffering
On many occasions, being asked questions, the Buddha reminded people that he only really taught two things. Any guesses? Did he teach magic and koans? Yin and yang? Mojo and moxie? The Kama Sutra and The Art of Not Giving a F***?
No. Of course, it was suffering (dukkha) and the end of suffering (nirvana). Why would anyone "teach suffering"? The Buddha had to make clear what "suffering" means. He defined it very handily and broadly, a functional definition for the cure he is about to present. What is the use of being told there's a cure if we haven't realized what disease we have been suffering from? "Pain" is much broader than we've imagined, as it includes disappointment, frustration, loss, separation, and even the excruciating agony of heartbreak.
But that's so pessimistic!
No, it isn't. It's a setup for the presentation of the antidote, solution, cure -- the path of practice to bring ALL suffering to a final end. We never even imagined we could bring it to an end, hoping death would do that for us. Death does not do that at all! Why? There is rebirth, and the reason there is rebirth is because there is craving and karma as yet to bring about its many results of all our skillful and unskillful deeds.
ALL disappointment, unsatisfactoriness, and woe CAN be brought to an end, a final end for it to never arise again. That is the great optimism of Buddhism, the "good news" of the Buddha's message to a benighted world of humans and devas (light beings, shining ones).
Suffering (dukkha): Disappointment is one of the Three Universal Marks of Existence. Various sutras sum up how cognitive processes result in our aversion (resistance, hate, fear, revulsion) to unpleasant things and experiences as we are moved to crave, grasp at, and cling to pleasure (sukha), keeping us in saṃsāra, the Cycle of Death and Rebirth. It is at the root of the Five Aggregates clung to as "self": (re)birth is suffering, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, mental pain, grief, and despair are s; suffering, asociation with the unloved, separation from the loved, NOT GETTING what one wants, getting what one does not want, all of this is "suffering." In brief, the Five Aggregates clung to as self (khandha, skandhas) are suffering.
The Four Noble Truths are Buddhism in a nutshell because they present the whole of the path of practice in four ennobling (enlightening) statements, like the assessment of a master physician:
- Diagnosis: There is a disease (suffering)
- Etiology: There is a cause of that disease (craving rooted in ignorance and associated with aversion)
- Prognosis: There is a solution
- Cure: There is way to the solution (magga, the path).
The fourth truth is the general Ennobling Eightfold Path, but there is a more detailed summary enumerated in the 37 Requisites of Awakening/Enlightenment (bodhipakkhiya-dhamma).

We must surely be learning? (Beatles)
The Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps (2018 Mix)"
There's no comparison to Beatle George Harrison, who wrote and sings this masterpiece, while nearly all the credit for the band's greatness goes to the other two competing with each other, and no one even remembers Pete Best. What about Ringo? Who?
LYRICS: I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping / While my guitar gently weeps / I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping / Still, my guitar gently weeps // I don't know why nobody told you / How to unfold your love / I don't know how someone controlled you / They bought and sold you // I look at the world and I notice it's turning / While my guitar gently weeps / With every mistake, we must surely be learning / Still, my guitar gently weeps / I don't know how you were diverted / You were perverted, too / I don't know how you were inverted / No one alerted you / I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping / While my guitar gently weeps / (I look) Look at you all / Still, my guitar gently weeps / Oh, oh / Yeah, yeah
We weep for the world -- steeped in ignorance, the root of all harm, giving rise to greed (lust) and aversion (fear), liking and disliking, the Roots of Good and Evil. Who cares if someone is good or evil? That person is going to care when the RESULTS come around. Karma really brings about what we experience, what we are experiencing now. So it is vital to grasp what "karma" means and what it doesn't. The greatest karma meme ever sums it up, a picture of credit card with the slogan: "Karma: It's everywhere you're going to be." (That's based on an old credit card commercial, which if people have never seen it because the successful marketing campaign ended a long time ago, may not get the impact of why it's a clever meme and a vital message/warning. If we knew that everything was going to follow us, none of it unseen or forgotten, we might behave differently, very differently. But we think we're getting away with everything, think there is nothing to come of this (what we do, say, and think). Pink Floyd has a great song about this from the CD Animals called "Sheep."
- What do you get for pretending the danger's not real?
- Meek and obedient shall follow the leader

It's funny because it's not unprecedented that someone would bomb right around 9/11. "This was Trump's 9/11," the radio hosts were saying this morning. Even the right-wing AM stations could hardly put up a defense. There's a rumor that KD's earring were transmitters feeding her the answers. Maybe deceased G-Joe B was on the other end, or Hillary having the last laugh. Maybe Tim was coming to the rescue after all, even before K-Dog tapped out.
The worst thing is not his racist dog whistle against Haitians. He's just echoing JD by throwing red meat at his fans. The worst is trying to claim he did a great job, a flawless debate performance with no need for another. He's so scared of Kamala that he's refusing to debate her, trying to gaslight us into believing that she must have lost because she asked for a rematch. Just clearly wants to trounce him some more. And he doesn't need to any further because he proved to himself that she's got a bigger IQ than he does, is suddenly presidential (shaking hands, keeping her cool, answering to the point, not rambling, not being negative, not whining and complaining, which is all Trump and too many Republicans seem to spend their time doing nowadays.

What was so disgusting about Trumpo the clown was his anger, a grumpy old man, too old to be running. He's the oldest. The GOP needs to have a meeting, get MTG or Liz Cheney or Kimberly "OMG What Happened to Your Face" Guilfoyle to talk him out of running. This country needs fresh blood not stale adult diapers in the White House. He's weird, he's too old, his cognitive decline is only getting worse. Send JD Vance in to run, while Old Orange can be a Yeller at home with his intestinal issues keeping him on his golden (toilet seat) throne.

It is understandable the RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard are opposed to Harris. It is less understandable that they would defect to Trump's camp. He is wholly unsuited for anything but orange overalls and a seat in the courtroom. It's too bad new administrations don't go after old. It would a pleasant change if criminals-in-chief had to account for their conduct.
