When don't get what we expect

No! We don't want to ever suffer! - Calm down, crybabies. Here's the solution: NIRVANA.

Accept what we cannot change? No
Why do we fall into the trap of our expectations? The Truth is much better.

Cry, Homer. But it's okay. It'll all be alright.
(Buddhism Podcast) When life, which is full of disappointment (dukkha), is not what we expected.

There are Four Ennobling Truths, four realizations that lead to enlightenment here and now and awakening in this very life, with spiritual liberation and freedom for all time. What are they?
  1. This is disappointing, incapable of ever fulfilling us.
  2. This is how pain/disappointment/suffering originates.
  3. This is the cessation of all suffering (nirvana).
  4. This is the Path to the cessation of all suffering.
Wait, remind me. What is "suffering"?

Many people misunderstand Buddhism because the word "suffering" comes up so much that it seems that's all there is -- depressing talk about pain. This is very misleading. Buddhism is ALL about bringing about the END of all suffering.

I'm not like this. I'm just having a bad day, k?
That is nirvana, attainable here and now, no having to wait till death, which is actually a lot late to be starting to do anything about all the suffering that awaits us for remaining ignorant and asleep. So since we don't suffer, we dismiss anything they Buddha said, thinking it doesn't apply to us. But do we suffer? Well, that depends on, What is "suffering"? The Buddha defines what he is calling suffering (dukkha):

Various sutras sum up what unpleasant things and experiences in countless rebirths we undergo. It is not just the pain that touches us in this life; the process rolls on and on in the "continued wandering on" of saṃsāra.

Oh, the Buddha found the end to all pain?
This process itself (the Five Aggregates clung to as self) is suffering, is unsatisfactory, is disappointing, is liable to great pain, is utterly incapable of ever fulfilling us. Rebirth is suffering (unsatisfactory, disappointing, painful, unfulfilling) as are growth (maturation), aging (slowly breaking down), illness, death, loss, sorrow, crying (lamentation), physical pains, grief, and despair.

Contact with unpleasant (hateful, unloved, unwanted, repulsive) things suffering, as are being separated from the pleasant (wished for, loved, wanted, attractive). Not getting what we want, getting what we don't want, never being satisfied with anything we get, always longing and craving for more...all of it is unsatisfactory, disappointing, painful, suffering.

Things we can control
Stoic philosopher/pilot James Bond Stockdale

And it all comes back to a more fundamental disappointment beneath it all -- the Five Aggregates clung to as self: body (form); feelings (sensations), perceptions, formations, and consciousness clung to as "self."

Emphasis in Buddhism is NOT on belief. That's nearly useless and only preliminary. The emphasis is gnostic like the ancient Gnostics, for whom direct personal experience of the Truth is everything. Part of that is cultivating insight (vipassana, lit. "clear seeing") into the nature of this "suffering" along with the other two marks of existence.

List: Seven Stages of Insight
The process of craving, grasping, and clinging starts with sense-contact, part of the Five Aggregates clung to as self, and how this corruption, this misapprehension, this forming of wrong view, this distorted seeing can be overcome by progressive training of the heart/mind, culminating in progressive insight, which can be remembered as the Seven Stages of Insight.

This begins by moral restraint (virtuous conduct, sila), which makes meditation (the absorptions, jhanas) possible, which makes mindfulness into the four foundations (body, feelings, mind, and mind-objects) possible.

This brings us back to the basics, the foundational summary, of what we need to penetrate -- not memorize, recite, "believe," argue about), the Teaching of the Four Ennobling Truths. What's "noble" about them or about suffering? They are not noble in the English sense of the word. The Buddhist sense of noble is arya or Aryan, which means "enlightened" or "enlightening."

The list is not a formula but a very general outline of the reflections that bring about what the historical Buddha called "enlightenment" (bodhi, "awakening"). We would rather stay asleep and perchance dream a pleasant fantasy full of pleasure and sensual experiences, delights, happiness in all its forms, of which there are many.

But this dreaming is very prone to nightmares, for in pursuit of pleasure, we ill-conduct ourselves and those karmic deeds come to fruition and ripen in great suffering, unimaginable suffering. We already taste that now, when we would dream and be full of pleasure and happiness all the time or, at least, at will. But that doesn't happen. We can't make that happen. We think we can so, like a donkey after that carrot, which is just right there in front of us, we keep going, pulling a heavy load of a cart laden with more and more karma (all our actions).

Buddhist sutras, or discourses, show the broad meaning of "suffering," from the slightest agitation to the greatest agony, coming in three categories:
  • dukkha-dukkha, aversion to physical pain – which includes physical and mental suffering, such as rebirth, aging, illness, dying, distress due to the undesirable.
  • viparinama-dukkha, the frustration of disappearing happiness – which is the suffering of pleasurable, pleasant, and happy experiences changing to painful, unpleasant, and miserable ones when the causes and conditions that produced the pleasurable are exhausted or lost.
  • sankhara-dukkha, the disappointment and unsatisfactoriness of transient, changing, impermanent "things" – the inability of [conditioned] things to give us constant, lasting pleasure and happiness.
So there is an END to all this suffering, now?
This includes a fundamental, inescapable unsatisfactoriness that pervades all things in and states of existence, all situations and future lives in any world (of which there are countless), any plane (of which there are 31), and any sphere (of which there are three), because all things all the time are incapable of fulfilling us and are always changing, hurtling towards destruction, and are ultimately impersonal, not ours, not under our absolute control.

At this level, the term dukkha, "suffering," indicates a lack of any lasting satisfaction, any ultimate fulfillment, any that things can ever measure up to our expectations. More

What is the point of all this talking about or even mentioning "suffering"? Yeah, yeah, we get it; we know we suffer, duh! Can't we just talk about nice things -- bliss, lights, expanded meditative states, magical powers, insights into all physical and mental phenomena, joy unending, nirvana-fication, quenching thirst, dousing the flames of greed, hatred, and smoldering delusion, stuff like that? Suffering is the problem that pleads for a final solution, a state and trait, a condition in need of a cure, an unbearable thing that we at some point have to deal with and bring to a final end.

Four truths to freedom
There's much to do to be free.
The first ennobling truth is the recognition that there is suffering, not because there is but because we don't even recognize it. We think we do. As soon as it pops up, we turn away, move on to something else, jump for distractions. We have next to no idea what it really is or what is causing it.

That is the second ennobling truth: What is causing it? The ROOT cause, the fundamental cause, the ultimate cause is? It is not craving (desire, wanting). It is ignorance (avijja), manifesting as wrong views (miccha-ditthi) and delusion (moha), confusion about reality.

The solution is? Awakening to the Truth, the ultimate truth (paramattha), enlightenment right now -- through realizing the causal links of Dependent Origination, the process by which this suffering is arising. Among those 12 links, of which ignorance is the ultimate cause, is one the Buddha singled as the one we can actually do something about right here and right now directly, and that is craving (tanha). Why do we crave? Ignorance, which is the same reason we have aversion and why we are deluded. The Buddha singles out craving to work on undoing the causes and conditions bringing about suffering. Why?

That is the third ennobling truth: What is not-suffering? Nirvana. Nirvana is the end of all suffering. How do we realize nirvana, directly perceive and experience it here and now?

That is the fourth ennobling truth: There is a Path to the end of suffering. What is it? It is outlined in general in the Ennobling Eightfold Path. However, to be more specific and less general, the Buddha spoke of 37 "things pertaining to enlightenment," the bodhipakkhiya-dhamma, for immediate development to know-and-see nirvana.

If life is short, what really matters?

Householder happiness? Marriage troubles in American Suburbia (Falsettos)

LYRICS: "I'm Breaking Down"
(Genius) I'd like to be a princess on a throne/ To have a country I can call my own/ And a king who's lusty and requires a fling/ With a female thing/ Great, men will be men/ Let me turn on the gas/ I caught them in the den with Marvin grabbing Whizzer's ass/ Oh sure, I'm sure, he's sure he did his best/ I mean he meant to be what he was not/ The things he was are things which I forgot/ He's a queen I'm a queen/ Where is our crown?/ I'm breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ My life is shitty/ And my kid seems like an idiot to me/ I mean that's sick/ I mean he's great/ It's me who is the matter/ Talking madder/ Than the maddest hatter

If I repeat one more word/ I swear I'll lose my brain/ Oh, what else should I explain?/ Oh, yes, it's true/ I can cry on cue/ But so can you/ I'm breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ Down, down/ You ask me, "Is it fun to cry over nothing?"/ It is, I'm breaking down/ Now let's consider what I might do next/ I hate admitting I've become perplexed/ I'm bereaved/ I've cried, I've shook, I've yelled, I've heaved/ I have been deceived

As enemies go Whizzer is not so bad/ It's just he's so damn happy/ That it makes me so damn mad/ I want to hate him but I really can't/ It's like a nightmare how this all proceeds/ I hope that Whizzer don't fulfill his needs/ "Don't" is wrong/ Sing along!/ What was the noun?/ I'm breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ I'll soon redecorate these stalls/ I'd like some padding on the walls/ And also pills/ I wanna sleep Sure, things'll probably worsen/ But it's not like I'm some healthy person/ I've rethought my talks with Marv/ And one fact does emerge/ Oh, I think I like his shrink/ So that is why I might turn to drink/ I'm on the brink/ Of breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ Down, down/ I only want to love a man who can love me/ Or like me/ Or help me/ Help me!

Marvin was never mine/ He took his meetings in the boys' latrine/ I used to cry/ He'd make a scene/ I'd rather die/ Than dry-clean Marvin's wedding gown/ I'm breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ It's so upsetting when you've found/ That what's rectangular is round/ I mean it stinks/ I mean he's queer/ And me, I'm just a freak/ Who needs it maybe every other week/ I don’t know/ I've rethought the fun we've had/ And one fact does emerge/ I've played the foolish clown/ The almost virgin who sings this dirge/ Is on the verge/ Of breaking down/ I'm breaking down/ Down, down/ The only thing that's breaking up is my family/ The only thing that's breaking up is my family/ But me, I'm breaking Down!

Origins of greed, hatred, and delusion

Animal symbols for each of the poisons
(Jethavanarama Buddhist Monastery) The origins of greed (raga), hatred (dvesha), and delusion (moha), the Three Poisons:

The Three Poisons (Pali lobha, dosa, moha and Sanskrit raga, dvesha, moha or collectively triviṣa, Tibetan dug gsum) in the Mahayana tradition are the three unwholesome roots (Pāli akusala-mūla, Sanskrit akuśala-mūla) in the Theravada tradition.

It is a Buddhist term that refers to the three root defilements (kilesas, kleshas) that lead to all negative states. The three states or actions (karmic root motivations) are:
  1. greed or sensual craving
  2. hatred/fear or aversion
  3. delusion, wrong view, or ignorance [1, 2].
These Three Poisons are considered three afflictions, habits, character flaws (states or traits) that are innate in living beings. They are the roots of all unwholesome actions (karma), as there can be craving or aversion without ignorance, and they cause suffering and lead again and again to rebirth [1, 3]. More

If life is 'suffering,' what's the point?

If 'life is suffering,' what’s the point of living? The Buddha's life-changing answer
What is vipassana?

Plague of insatiable craving: wendigo

The mind entity that plagues humanity: Wetiko

(Asangoham) Dec. 20, 2024: In his book Wetiko: Healing the Mind-Virus That Plagues Our World, author Paul Levy argues that all of humanity is under the grasp of a psychological illness: wetiko (better known as wendigo).

More, more, gimme more!
Wetiko is a term used in Native American spirituality to describe a “contagious psycho-spiritual disease of the soul” and a “parasite of the mind.”

In his book, Levy argues that the concept of wetiko is present not just among the Native Americans, but in several spiritual traditions, including Kabbalah, Vedanta, and even the psychology of Carl Jung.

Levy writes: “Wetiko is a cannibalizing force driven by insatiable greed, appetite without satisfaction [craving giving rise to repeated disappointment the Buddha called dukkha], consumption as an end in itself, and war for its own sake against other tribes, species, nature, and even the individual’s own humanity. It is a disease of the soul, and being a disease of the soul, we all potentially have wetiko, as it pervades and informs the underlying field of consciousness. Any one of us at any moment can fall into our unconscious and unwittingly become an instrument for the evil of wetiko to act itself out through us and incarnate in our world. If we see someone who seems to be taken over by wetiko and we think they have the disease and we don’t, in seeing them as separate we have fallen under the spell of the virus ourselves.”
This video is a deep dive into the concept of wetiko and how we can prevent ourselves from being infected by this “mind-virus.”

The video also talks about how wetiko was perceived by the great Indian mystic Sri Aurobindo. #wendigo #wetiko #nativeamerican #entity

What solution did the Buddha offer?
"A Cure for Wendigo/Insatiable Craving" by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
How'd you let go, Wise One?
One cannot "resist evil," as Jesus would say, because the attempt to do so only makes it stronger. If ego could overcome insatiable greed (for the pleasant), aversion (toward the unpleasant, manifesting as hatred, fear, frustration, running away), and ignorance (giving rise to wrong views, delusions, confusion). The ego will not destroy the ego. Greed for freedom-from-greed will not succeed. Hating hatred (or fearing fear) will not make it go away. And, alas, at the root of all mental defilements and suffering is ignorance (avijja, not knowing, manifesting as delusion or moha).

I want to be reborn in space, in a pleasure heaven
Okay, there's the problem. We can't overcome these three roots of all that is unwholesome and giving rise to suffering (disappointment, pain, unpleasant experience). What's a possible solution? Rather than the ego letting go, we will let wisdom (panyavipassana, insight) uproot ignorance. Letting go vanquishes greed -- but letting go is impossible by willpower. The solution? Mindful observation of what is -- what is really there, this gross body or any conditioned (composed, fabricated, formation) thing, which is not at all what it seems to be and is utterly incapable of giving what it promises and therefore always leads to disappointment and dissatisfaction -- with heightened mind. When the mind/heart sees things for what they really are, it lets go. "Ego" (the Five Aggregates clung to as self) does not let go, "I" do not let go, "will" does not let go. Just as when a feather or a plastic bag fall into a fire, what happens? They shrink back, pull away, withdraw, in other words let go of the fire that is clung to. The heat does it, not the feather or bag.

Not by will but by watchfulness.
For example, look at the lovely, say a person inspiring lust and craving. I want, I want, I want! How can this addiction, obsession, craving be cured? (We don't want to cure it; we just want it, in ignorance believing this object will satisfy and fulfill us when it will not, cannot, and never has). Not getting it or getting it and realizing it didn't fulfill us or satisfy us, but only disappointed and became the source of great pain, how can this craving (addiction, clinging) be cured? How? See it for what it really is. Wise reflection (yoniso manasikara). First, mind must be heightened (temporarily purified/cleansed of the Five Hindrances and basic defilements, asavas and kilesas) then the mind must be systematically applied to looking objectively (vipassana) at what is clung to.

What is clung to? Only five things, the most fundamental five things in all of our many existences (countless rebirths), are tenaciously clung to and identified with even though they are impermanent, disappointing (unable to ever fulfill us), and impersonal. These are the Five Heaps, the Five Aggregates clung to as self (khandhas):
  1. form (body, materiality);
  2. feelings
  3. perceptions
  4. mental formations
  5. consciousness.
Then there was peace, light, awakening
Letting go of these, there is no more disease. Ignorance is cured in an instant and with it go clinging and aversion. Poof! This is the first stage of enlightenment, stream entry (entering the current that inevitably and invariably leads to the end of all suffering, complete awakening, full enlightenment, arahantship). This is liberation, a cure for the insatiable desires that plague us. While in English we say "desire" is not all bad, remember that "desire" is a translation of the Pali word tanha (lit. "thirst," "craving," "insatiable greed"). That's bad, but how to translate it. The Sanskrit trsna means the same thing, and only "craving" and "clinging" come close in English. We cannot let go by will only by wisdom, so there is no need for asceticism (rooted in aversion) or saintliness (rooted in a desire for more refined desires) or delusion (the ignorance of thinking we understand when the heart/mind has not yet been trained and has not yet penetrated the truths the Buddha talked about. This is not an intellectual endeavor. True freedom comes from true experience. That is what the Ennobling (Enlightening) Eightfold Path is for.

Who's happier, the Buddha or the King?

Buddha vs. King
(Guide to the Buddhist Path) Feb. 21, 2020: This is a story about the Buddha meeting a king. He met many. Who's happier? Fleeting worldly (mundane) happiness versus stable otherworldly (supermundane) happiness, which is better? Written and animated by Aryajit. It is based on a discussion the historical Buddha had with some Jain ascetics (Niganthas), which can be read at accesstoinsight.org. The part about "Who is happier?" appears at the end of the sutra. SUTRA: The Lesser Tangle of Suffering
Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), Cula-dukkhakkhandha Sutta, (MN 14 PTS: M i 91) edited and expanded by Dhr. Seven and Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly
Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was staying among the Scythians (Sakas, Sakyans, Shakyians) in Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Park.

Then the Sakyan Mahanama [Note 1] went to the Buddha, bowed, sat respectfully to one side, and said: "For a long time now, venerable sir, I have understood the Dhamma (Doctrine, Teaching, Dharma) taught by the Blessed One in this way:

"'Greed (attraction) is a defilement of the mind (heart); hatred (aversion) is a defilement of the mind; delusion (wrong view) is a defilement of the mind.'

"Yet, even though I understand the Teaching of the Blessed One that greed, hatred, and delusion are defilements of the mind, there are still times when greed, hatred, and delusion invade and remain.

He continued, "This thought occurs to me: What mental characteristic is as yet unabandoned within me so that there are times when greed or hatred/fear or delusion invade my mind and remain?"

"Mahanama, that very mental state (quality or characteristic) [2] is what is unabandoned in you so that there are times when greed, hatred, or delusion invade the mind and remain [3]. For if it were abandoned in you, you would not live the household life and would not partake of [and cling to] sensuality.

"It is because it is not yet abandoned in you that you live the household life and partake of sensuality.

"Even though a disciple of the noble ones has clearly seen as it actually is with right understanding that sensuality is of much disappointment, much despair, with dangerous drawbacks, still — if one has not attained a rapture and pleasure apart from sensuality, apart from unskillful mental states, or something more peaceful than that [4] — one can again be tempted by sensuality.

"But when one has clearly seen as it actually is with right understanding that sensuality is of much disappointment, much despair, with dangerous drawbacks, and one has attained a rapture and pleasure apart from sensuality, apart from unskillful mental states, or something more peaceful than that, one can no longer be tempted by sensuality.

Only when I was sure did I teach.
"I myself, before my awakening, when I was still an unawakened being in search of awakening (a bodhisattva), saw as it actually is with right understanding that sensuality is of much disappointment, much despair, and dangerous drawbacks.

"As long as I had not attained a rapture and pleasure apart from sensuality, apart from unskillful mental states, or something more peaceful than that, I did not claim that I could no longer be tempted by sensuality.

"But when I saw as it actually is with right understanding that sensuality is of much disappointment, much despair, with dangerous drawbacks and I had attained a rapture and pleasure apart from sensuality, apart from unskillful mental states, or something more peaceful than that, that was when I claimed that I could no longer be tempted by sensuality.

"What, Mahanama, is the allure of sensuality? There are five strands. What are these five? They are:
  1. forms cognizable by the eye — agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire, enticing,
  2. sounds cognizable by the ear...
  3. fragrances cognizable by the nose...
  4. flavors cognizable by the tongue...
  5. tactile sensations cognizable by the body — agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire, enticing.
"Whatever pleasure or joy arises depending on these five strands of sensuality, that is the allure of sensuality.

"What is the drawback of sensuality? On account of the occupation (livelihood) by which one makes a living — whether checking or accounting or calculating or plowing or trading or cattle tending or archery or as a king's servant, or whatever the occupation may be — one faces cold, faces heat, is harassed by flies and mosquitoes, wind and sun, and creeping things, dying from thirst and hunger.

"Now dangerous drawbacks exist in the case of sensuality, a mass of disappointment visible here and now, with sensuality as its reason, sensuality as its source, sensuality as its cause, the reason simply being sensuality.

"If one gains no wealth while working and striving and making an effort, one sorrows, grieves, and laments, beats one's breast, becomes distraught: 'My work is in vain, my efforts are fruitless!'

"Now this dangerous drawback in the case of sensuality, this mass of disappointment visible here and now, has sensuality as its reason, sensuality as its source, sensuality as its cause, the reason simply being sensuality.

"If one gains wealth while working and striving and making effort, one experiences pain and distress in protecting it: 'How will neither rulers nor thieves make off with my property, nor fire burn it, nor water sweep it away, nor heirs make off with it [prematurely]?' And as one guards and watches over property, rulers or thieves make off with it, or fire burns it, or water sweeps it away, or heirs make off with it. And one sorrows, grieves, and laments, beats one's breast, becomes distraught: 'What was mine is no more!' Now this drawback in the case of sensuality, this mass of disappointment visible here and now, also has sensuality as its reason, sensuality as its source, sensuality as its cause, the reason simply being sensuality.

"It is with sensuality as the reason, sensuality as the source, sensuality as the cause, the reason simply being sensuality, that rulers quarrel with rulers, nobles with nobles, Brahmins with Brahmins, householders with householders, mother with child, child with mother, father with child, child with father, brother with brother, sister with sister, brother with sister, sister with brother, friend with friend...." More: MN 14 (accesstoinsight.org)

NOTES
1. Mahanama is a Shakyan cousin of the Buddha. The Commentary claims that he was already a once-returner when this discourse took place, but there is nothing in the Pali canon to indicate that this is so.
2. That is, greed, hatred, or delusion.
3. This sentence is mistranslated in both MLS and MLDB. Its point is that the mental states that invade Mahanama's mind are precisely the ones he has not yet abandoned. In practical terms, this means that he does not have to look for another lurking behind them but instead can focus his attention on abandoning these directly as they arise. The remainder of the sutra gives a lesson in how greed, hatred, and delusion can be abandoned by understanding the object on which they most frequently focus: sensuality.
4. The rapture and pleasure apart from sensuality, apart from unskillful mental states, is a factor of the first and second meditative absorption (jhana). "Something more peaceful than that" would be any attainments higher than the second absorption.
5. See DN 2. 6. One of the great ironies in the history of Buddhism is the extent to which teachings that the Buddha clearly disapproved of, such as this one, have later been taught as quintessentially Buddhist. In some circles, a teaching similar to this one — that not reacting to pain burns away the impurity of past karma and creates no new karma for the future — is still taught as Buddhist to this day.

    'Desert Daze' cancels 2024 festival

    Desert Daze cancels 2024 festival
We're lost, just admit it, we're lost. - We're not lost. There are other things to do out here.

    Turn around. Show cancelled.
(Billboard) Organizers for the California festival Desert Daze have called off this year's event. In an announcement organizers stated:

"It is no longer possible to execute the weekend as planned." The event, which has remained independent since launching in 2012, was unable to move forward with the 2024 edition due to "rising production costs and the current volatile festival market," according to the announcement.

Yeah, I'll walk back. Is it this way?
"Desert Daze is more than a festival or business venture to us," said Desert Daze co-founder Phil Pirrone in a release. "The community that we've cultivated together means so much to us and is the reason we will work to find a way to keep this beautiful thing going for many years to come."
    .
The 2024 edition of Desert Daze was set to take place Oct. 10-13 in Lake Perris, California. Headliners for this year's event were to include:
Super-ancient Buddhist stupa with parasol top, according to chinesediscoveredamerica.com
    .
What else is there to do in the desert? UFO hunt?
"With each year, we do our best to serve the Desert Daze community," added Pirrone. "We are always learning and working diligently to improve the experience, and we tried everything to find a way forward this year. While we hit pause for now, we will be working in the background to deliver another special experience for all of us to share in the future. We thank you for your support."

We should move out to the California desert.
All pass holders for the 2024 festival will be refunded and will be contacted directly via their point of purchase. While the main event will not take place this year, side shows under the Desert Daze Presents banner will go forward as scheduled.
