Compassion with fangs? Buddhist protector

Mom, is this what you call compassion? - Shut the front door, you worthless piece of me!
(Buddha's Wisdom) MAHA KALA: The Buddhist protector who looks like a demon

Mahākāla (Sanskrit महाकाल) is a deity common to Buddhism and Hinduism [1].

In Buddhism, Mahākāla is regarded as a Dharmapāla ("Protector of the Dharma") and a wrathful manifestation of a cosmic or primordial buddha or bodhisattva.

In Hinduism, Mahākāla is a fierce manifestation of the Hindu God Shiva and the consort of the Goddess Mahākālī [1].

Sri Yantra, sacred chakra (Shaktism)
He most prominently appears in the Kalikula sect of Shaktism [2, 3, 4]. Mahākāla appears as a protector deity in the various traditions of Vajrayana Buddhism, like Chinese Esoteric Buddhism, Japanese Shingon, and Tibetan Vajrayana [1] and Bon.

He is known as Dàhēitiān and Daaih'hāktīn (大黑天) in Mandarin and Cantonese, Daeheukcheon (대흑천) in Korean, Đại Hắc Thiên in Vietnamese, and Daikokuten (大黒天) in Japanese. More

Story of the Buddha in five minutes

The Scythian Prince Siddhartha: The Buddha
(Dhamma Super Rich) Here is the life of the Buddha, or at least an attempt at the highlights, told in five minutes. Sadly, it makes the usual mistake of emphasizing the wrong thing while giving a gist of the allegory that is the Awakened One's life. The Buddha literally means "the Awakened One." Where does it go wrong?

Anyone listening to this summary might conclude that the reason the wandering ascetic Siddhartha was able to "awaken" (become enlightened) is because he made a strong determination (a vow to sooner shrivel up and have his blood turn to dust before getting up from) under the Bodhi tree. He determined to awaken by a massive effort.

Clear vision happens if we strain and strive?
Anyone familiar with the story of in detail of how Siddhartha became the Buddha might notice that this is exactly why for nearly seven years he failed and could not awaken, not breakthrough, not bring about ultimate realization (penetrating insight).

It was only when he, in a sense, "gave up" pushing (extreme asceticism) and muscling (efforting) -- and instead surrendered self will -- that awakening happened on its own.
  • (By Sayalay Susila, Dhr. Seven)
The Truth is always there. It's just that we do not notice it, do not comprehend things as they really are, do not penetrate what we have learned and memorized to the heart of the matter. What is missing is not the Truth to be perceived. What is missing is our clear-vision, our undistorted knowing-and-seeing. And this will not be accomplished by more and more effort. That would be like straining and squinting the dust-covered eye as if by mere effort-of-will things would become clear. They will not. We must first purify the mind/heart that knows and sees. That is temporarily by the absorptions. CONTINUED

Signs of progress in meditation (Rinpoche)

How do I know if I'm becoming a better meditator? Signs of progress with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
(Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche) Premiered Aug. 20, 2024: Although meditation instructions are often simple and easy to understand, knowing whether we are practicing correctly can be difficult. [There's nothing easy about applying the easy instructions, nothing simple about actually doing the practice that sounded to terribly simple that there should have been nothing to it.] How do we know if it is being effective and helping us progress along the path of awakening (enlightenment)? In this monthly teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche gives helpful advice to assess how our "calm abiding practice" (samatha) or "insight meditation practice" (vipassana) is progressing.

No Kings protests across USA (10/18)

ICE, get 'em! Bust their heads in My America!
The No Kings protests, also known internationally as the No Dictators or No Tyrants protests, is a series of demonstrations, largely in the United States, against what the organizers describe as authoritarian policies of Donald Trump and corruption in his administration [3][4][5].

"Nothing says Traitor quite like a Trump sign"
What will it accomplish? - I'dunno. - What is it meant to accomplish? - Absolutely nothing, by design. - It just makes us feel good.

Protests first took place on June 14, 2025 (labelled as "No Kings Day" by the 5051 organizers and participants) on the same day as the U.S. Army 250th Anniversary Parade and Trump's 79th birthday.

We demand more experimental vaccines!
It's George Soros funded? Agenda 2030? Permits were applied for and police consulted for a nice autumn day of funny signs safe for everyone. Organizers have planned the "No Kings protests 2.0" for Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025 [6]. More

The bad news about these protests w/ Mel K
(Official website: The Jimmy Dore Show) Mel K goes on the show to discuss: Don't be fooled.

The Power Belongs to the People

United against King Trump
(NoKings.org) In June 2025, millions of everyday Americans from every walk of life peacefully took to the streets and declared with one voice: "No Kings." The world saw the power of the people, and Pres. Trump’s attempt at a royal coronation collapsed under the strength of a movement rising against his abuses of power. Now, he’s doubling down — sending militarized [ICE] agents into our communities, silencing voters, and handing billionaires giveaways while families struggle. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy. [And alone, Trump chooses dictatorship. Maybe we should crown him president and put him on the cover of TIME?]

Organizer Leah Greenberg: Keep it chill

Protest, eat cake, just don't ask me about Epstein
Even as Pres. Trump has cracked down on dissent and illegally sent military and paramilitary troops into multiple cities to conduct police activities (posse comitatus), organizers of Saturday's anti-authoritarian "No Kings" protests expect millions to join at least 2,500 rallies across all 50 states and several U.S. territories.

The turnout could surpass the 5 million protesters who turned out for "No Kings Day" events in June 2025.

We don't do kings...unless they do us first.
"We are engaging in the most American activity in the world, which is coming together in peaceful protest of our government," says Jewish Leah Greenberg, co-founder and co-executive director of the progressive organization Indivisible.

ICE was invented using the pretext of 9/11.
Trump's threats against the protests are a "classic exercise of the authoritarian playbook, to try to create fear, to try to threaten, to try to make people back off preemptively," she adds.

"There will be no fear, but the fear of what will happen to us if we don't mobilize," says Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez of the 25th Ward in Chicago, where mass protests are expected.

Is 'No Kings' real or controlled opposition?
Indivisible Movement is a crock. I did not authorize it. AOC, Hillary, and Joe don't back it.
Is Leah Greenberg a real rebel or actually just pro-Zionist controlled opposition?
1984: Emmanuel Goldstein (drawn by AI) during a 'Two Minutes Hate' : r/midjourney
.
L. Goldberg in the role of 1984's E. Goldstein?
"Controlled opposition" means a group that stands as a placeholder for actual opposition, but who are completely ineffective.

Therefore, a ruler controls even the so-called "opposition" in an adversarial relationship. It is as if one's defense attorney were bought off by lawyers for the prosecution to ensure a conviction.

Hey, Leah, stay in your lane! I'm the Savior here
In this sense, everything is controlled by the ruling group, or the Uniparty, without necessarily a direct conspiracy taking place.

Example in 1984
In George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, anyone who thought s/he was rising up against fascism and the Dictator Big Brother would get behind the [Jewish] "opposition" leader Emmanuel Goldstein and his organization "The Brotherhood."

ICE/DHS is surveilling you.
It was fake, as the failed protagonist (Winston Smith) painfully found out. There was no real opposition. It was just a trick of the Inner Party (O'Brien) and Big Brother and the Thought Police, controlled opposition. Read the novel; there's a reason it's famous.

The light of wisdom, bliss, and awakening

Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
"Light arose, knowledge arose," Siddhartha knew as he became the Buddha (geovea.com)
.
What is the light of wisdom? Following the enlightened Burmese meditation master Pa Auk Sayadaw, one might think it is a nimitta (the sign).

But it might be more subtle than that. According to one of his successful students, attained to the initial stages of complete liberation (bodhi and nirvana, "awakening and emancipation"), there are many lights in meditation.

It is not something to get hung up on. If one gets excited when first seeing a light that often accompanies single-pointed meditation to the point of absorption (jhana), that elation or distraction will always be enough to destroy the experience.

The light will go away. One will be downhearted, expectant, anxious to get it back -- all mental defilements, all standing in the way of it coming back.

What to do? Let it go. Let it be. If we let it be, it will be itself. I remember the first time I saw an "internal light" with no external source. I was riding my skateboard barefoot down a hill on a summer evening. I tried to turn into a driveway, not accounting for this one inch notch separating the sidewalk from the street, the pavement from the asphalt. The front tires stuck, and my forehead -- propelled at the same speed as a moment before -- hit the pavement and bounced like a basketball.

I was shocked. I should have been dead, as dead as a watermelon after Gallager's done with it. But rather than cry or go unconscious, knocked out by the concussive blow that must have strained my cranium to the point of using my frontal cortex like a bumper. There was no time for any of that; I was too excited, "What in the heck was that?!" I thought. That light. It was so bright, so sudden, so worth experiencing again.

All the light I'd ever heard of, I didn't believe. But I lived it. The light I saw was real. When others sat around me in group meditation and shared about their light, I had to roll my eyes and wonder if they weren't just imagining it, hallucinating, projecting, or making it up. One could relax to the point of slipping into a hypnagogic state, very suggestible, very dream-like. Sure, it's possible, but how reliable is it? How objective is it?

Our dreams, while very real and potentially meaningful, are not yet objective. Cognitive psychology is moving apace, and soon they will be demonstrable, recordable, and possibly able to be experienced again like sound on a recording medium (like magnetizable cassette tape iron filings). When they are, dreams may still not be real.

Nimittas differ for perceivers because of karma.
But light in meditation is real or seems real from all the reports. When the nimitta arises -- which it does as a function of the absence of the Five Mental Hindrances (nivarana) and defilements (kilesas, asavas, akusala citta karmas) of various kinds.

Leigh Brasington
In their place arise the Five Factors of Absorption. One needn't "do" them or expect them or project them. The essence is letting go. One would hope that, as Leigh Brasington teaches, one could develop the positive five and that way the negative five wouldn't be able to counteract them.

But that's not the way the great master teaches it. And what Brasington, a successful student of the great Western Theravada Buddhist nun in Sri Lanka Ayya Khema, teaches as a technique is to focus on piti (supersensual joy, elation, gladness, rapture, bliss) wherever it arises until it spreads and suffuses throughout the body.

I was on retreat with Brasington at the long term Barre Meditation Retreat Center, sitting with Pa Auk Sayadaw, and one day I was in line for my daily interview. Brasington was in front of me. It was a silent retreat. No one spoke. It was very quiet. And the all-wood construction of the place, sparsely furnished as it is, like a Japanese zendo, was great for its resonance. One could hear the echo of other people's private interview if one held still and the door didn't get closed all the way, as it often did not.

A Practical Guide for the Jhanas
I could hear what the Sayadaw was telling Brasington, and what Brasington was telling the Sayadaw. I thought, as Brasington must have, that the Sayadaw would be happy that someone had made a meditative breakthrough and found a way to produce the first absorption, the first jhana. He was not.

Brasington spoke highly of the bliss and how much it helped the sit, the progress of the meditation. The Sayadaw wasn't having it. Apparently, this was not the first interview that was going this way. This had come up before. And the Sayadaw wasn't having it. He got stern and, like a loving father sick to the teeth of his lackadaisical son and his hippie ways, told him to shape up and get on the straight and narrow.

Brasington didn't seem to be listening. I could imagine him smirking like, "The Old Man doesn't get my groove and where I'm coming from, Man, the blissful path, and I'm not going to listen to his jive."

Vipassana (insight) meditation with Brasington
I was on board with Brasington. Teach us that. I couldn't understand or see the pitfall. But I did know the Sayadaw quite well, as far as Westerners go, at least for someone not a special student treated to the attention and encouragement one gets as progress starts and success is just a few sits away (with the onset of jhana and the Sayadaw is eager to establish one through as many of the eight levels of absorption and onto the vipassana practice for liberating insight).

I might never known that was what was waiting, except that I dated someone who succeeded all the way to what the Buddha called "the highest bliss." It isn't rapture (piti). That's rather low, relatively speaking. It's great, and I've tasted it. It's the best flavor because it feels just like intense pleasure in the body with the exception that one realizes that it isn't coming from the five senses.

And that's odd. Most of our pleasure, most of the time, comes from the "five strands of sensuality." Just ask a deva or someone who spends a lot of time blissed out here on earth. Piti is super-sensual and a great thing, a wondrous thing. I highly recommend it.

The great Pa Auk Sayadaw knows and sees.
Foolishly, thinker-non-practitioners fear -- and spread fear -- about becoming addicted to this very pleasurable rapture and stuck in "trance" because of it. It's never happened. Out of the tens of thousands of students Pa Auk Sayadaw led through the absorptions, not one -- not a single one -- became stuck because of the blissfulness of piti. Well, maybe one: Leigh Brasington.

He wouldn't listen during that interview. And I was shocked to hear the Sayadaw get short with him, saying something to the effect of "Get your hand out of the cookie jar and keep moving forward."

I didn't understand why he was speaking this way if Brasington was claiming to have the absorptions at his disposal, available to him as he wished. I came to understand that what Sayadaw calls an absorption and what it's for might surprise some.

It is characterized by the Five Factors of Absorption, which can be reviewed after one emerges, not before or during the experience, which would either prevent it or ruin it. There's plenty of time to review later. In fact, it's a necessity. Things go by too fast during the experience. And thinking about things -- or thinking while meditating is not meditating. That might go by the name "navel gazing."

The Sayadaw on insight meditation basics
Absorption excludes everything else but the object of meditation, and to the extent that one knows anything else, it is because one temporarily falls out to know it or one goes back to review it. While it is, it is all that is. That's what makes it great. That's what makes it temporarily purifying. People might well mistake rapture for enlightenment or some miracle. It's just a sign along the way, with the light, the nimitta, acting as the best object to absorb into. It sucks one in with enough attention. That's what I was told.

But the Sayadaw's teacher didn't think that's why it had that name. So there is not universal agreement about all of these things and terms. However, the notion that the first absorption is characterized by "thinking and pondering" seems absolutely wrong. Ven. Thanissaro, who so often uses this clumsy and pedantic translation, must not be too familiar with the experience, even if he himself fancies himself enlightened.

(Which he might do given one thing I heard him say once in answer to a Western monastic's question about how we could ever be sure we are enlightened or not. His answer suggested to me that he desperately needs a teacher, an enlightened teacher to set him straight).

Snow on the Hollywood sign for Oscars?

Dailymail.co.uk/2011-Hollywood-sign-covered-snow...Academy-Awards; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

A regular day over the Hollywood sign
The A-list movie stars waltzing up the red carpet at the Oscars this weekend will need to wrap up warm as temperatures plummet in Los Angeles.

And there is even a chance the iconic Hollywood sign, which towers over Tinseltown, could be covered in snow on Sunday [for the Academy Awards. Of course, that was way back in 2011. Could it happen again with freezing rain over Los Angeles and snow levels down to 1,500 feet?]
.
The last time the Southern California metropolis -- with average February temperatures of nearly 60F -- encountered snow was way back in 1954 when a third of an inch fell. Today temperatures were a mere 44F. More

Blood Moon: "an inauspicious sign"

Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven, Crystal Q., Wisdom Quarterly

File:Descent of Amida and 25 Bodhisattvas (Fukushima Museum).jpgIt was eerie walking with an enlightened Buddhist master, a Westerner who teaches the three distinct Buddhist traditions and sees no insurmountable differences between them. They are various routes to the same fundamental realization (emptiness or the impersonal nature of all phenomena the Buddha called anatta and sunnyata). High in the hills that serve as the backdrop for the San Gabriel Valley, dividing it from Orange County, we spoke of the coming super wolf "blood moon." He paused and immediately referred to it as "an inauspicious sign." But surely the devas ("shining ones") will intervene to save humanity, we offered. He said they were only interested in doing so when humans are behaving in such a way as to merit the help. Are we? There are Ten Courses of Wholesome Action (karma), which anyone can review for him or herself. We pressed him: "Surely, you're not afraid of a red moon?" "It's just a sign, an indication" of which there have been several that serve as warnings to what is happening. He did not detail what is happening, but he did say the Tibetan tradition and, in fact, all human societies have known of such signs and have ways of attempting to ward off the danger. Our world merely reflects us. In the Agganna Sutra, "A Buddhist Genesis," the Buddha points out how the karma of beings on earth, who devolved on earth after coming here, led to devolving external conditions as their internal intentions, the basis of karma, led to cruder and cruder conduct. It's something to think about. But who's afraid of signs and omens in the sky? We kept asking him about this and many things. He kept referring to the "suchness" of things.
