The Gateless Gate of Zen: Alan Watts

Anima Creativa, April 25, 2023; CC Liu, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Thirty minutes of pure genius with Alan Watts on "The Gateless Gate"
(Anima Creativa) Alan Watts discusses the ancient Zen text The Gateless Gate, a foundational set of 40 Zen stories or koans that impart Buddhist wisdom in a creative way. The goal is to provoke a sudden awakening, epiphany, aha moment, or satori.

Watts dives into Zen philosophy and practice through the lens of The Gateless Gate, reviewing four of these stories. To read more, see The Gateless Gate FREE: sacred-texts.com/bud/glg...

Psychedelic Sangha: Enter the Paisley Gate

Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven, Ananda M. (Dharma Meditation Initiative), Wisdom Quarterly

Are you a "Psychonaut" looking for a complementary meditation practice?
  • Are you looking for a way to integrate and expand your psychedelic experience through the contemplative and philosophical tools of Buddhism?
Psychedelic Explorer's Guide (Fadiman)
Or maybe you’re a Buddhist who found the Dharma through the “Paisley Gate” [like Zen Buddhism's “Gateless Gate”] and value the spiritual efficacy of entheogens?

The mission of Psychedelic Sangha is to facilitate community -- a "space of difference" for Buddhists and psychonauts alike.

This is a spiritual collective of Buddhist-Psychonauts who share a commitment to Buddhism and believe that entheogenic substances like psilocybin (or “magic mushrooms”) and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD, a.k.a. “acid”) can help facilitate religious, spiritual, mystical experiences.

Plant-based substances have played a well-known role in many indigenous cultures -- including the Indo-Aryans [like the Shakyans] of ancient India during the Vedic period (1500-500 BCE).

Human Prayer Wheel by FluxBuddha, 2018 (psychedelicsangha.org)
.
Whether such substances ever permeated Indian Buddhist circles is a provocative and intriguing question that could have important legal implications on Buddhists groups who use psychedelics for religious purposes.

What is not in question is the integral role that psychedelics have played in the indigenous cultural history of American Buddhism.

Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics
"Entheogens have entered Buddhism to stay," writes Dr. Huston Smith in his preface to Zig Zag Zen. "There can be no turning back from the point that has been reached."

We regard psychedelics (better referred to as "entheogens" that bring out the divine from within) as a sacrament in the American Buddhist experience.

It is one that requires historical recognition, tolerance, and practical reconciliation and integration through the greater development of “Psychedelic Buddhism.”

How to Change Your Mind (Michael Pollan)
What Psychedelic Sangha offers is a safe and supportive spiritual community -- a "refuge" for misfit Buddhists and psychonauts who are searching for like-minded people who equally value both Buddhism and psychedelic science.

Psychedelic Sangha organizes and hosts guided meditations, immersive interdisciplinary experiences, online and in-person study courses on Psychedelic Buddhism, group retreats, psychedelic education, and harm-reduction workshops, public talks, photography and art exhibitions, music performances, film screenings, and more.

All are invited to join public Meetup groups (like Los Angeles) that feature uncommon opportunities to enact Psychedelic Buddhism.

Psychedelic Sangha is very grateful to have the following individuals on its team of Meetup organizers and advisory board members... More

VP Biden, politicans MOLEST children (video)

WhatReallyHappened; ZeroEightFour; Wake Up Call; FBI Chief Gunderson (conspiracyconferences); Ruby, Pat Macpherson, Pfc. Sandoval, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden tells 13-year-old he's "horny" for her on hot mic (C-SPAN2).
(Discovery) Conspiracy of Silence documentary listed in TV Guide Magazine to be aired on the Discovery Channel, on May 3, 1994. It exposes a network of religious leaders and US politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies.

Sh*t happens, *ssholes - Hillary Clinton
Originally scheduled to air in May of 1994 on the Discovery Channel, "Conspiracy of Silence" was yanked at the last minute due to formidable pressure applied by top politicians. Some very powerful people did not want anyone to see this documentary exposing their sexual improprieties.

This was the biggest pedophile scandal in the history of the U.S.A. The story received some newspaper coverage but there was a TV news media blackout on the subject. For this reason, most Americans have never heard of it.

Former Republican Senator John DeCamp was involved in the production a documentary called "Conspiracy of Silence" it was to air May 3, 1994 on the Discovery Channel.

The Franklin Cover-Up (J. W. DeCamp)
This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the cable TV industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired.

Almost immediately, the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who ordered all copies destroyed. A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska State Senator and attorney John DeCamp, who made it available to retired FBI Chief Ted L. Gunderson:

While the video quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by the participants involved. Purchase a VHS copy at this link. Or view an online copy at this page: Franklin cover up video page.

The shutdown of Omaha, Nebraska's Franklin Community Federal Credit Union, raided by federal agencies in November 1988, sent shock waves all the way to Washington, D.C.

Forty million dollars was missing. The credit union's manager was Republican Party activist Lawrence E. "Larry" King, Jr., behind whose rise to fame and riches stood powerful figures in Nebraska politics and business and in the nation's capital.

In the face of opposition from local and state law enforcement, from the FBI and from the powerful Omaha World-Herald newspaper, a special Franklin committee of the Nebraska Legislature launched its own probe. What looked like a financial swindle soon exploded into a hideous tale of drugs, Iran-Contra money-laundering, a nationwide child sexual abuse ring, and ritual murder. More

CHAPTER 21: Drugs and The Monarch Project
On August 18-20, 1996, a California newspaper, the San Jose Mercury, published a series of articles implicating elements of the U.S. government in running tons of cocaine into U.S. cities during the 1980s.

Based upon recently declassified government documents, eyewitness reports, and court records, Mercury reporter Gary Webb provided a detailed account of how the Contras financed their war against the Sandinista regime of Nicaragua by flying tons of cocaine into the West Coast, where it would be turned into the deadly, instantly addictive "crack," and sold to such [black] street gangs as the Crips and the Bloods.

I'd rather not think about it.
All of this began after the U.S. Congress in the early 1980s passed the Boland Amendment, which stopped all official financing for U.S. intelligence's "covert war" in Nicaragua. The whole project was taken "off-line," and financed by drug sales, the subject of Webb's articles.

Indignation exploded when the Mercury series hit the streets. Maxine Waters, Congresswoman for South-Central Los Angeles, one of the areas hardest hit by crack and drug-related violence, sent a letter to CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) Chief John Deutsch demanding an investigation of the agency, in which she said:

"As someone who has seen how the crack cocaine trade has devastated the South-Central Los Angeles community, I cannot exaggerate my feelings of dismay that my own government may have played a part in the origins and history of this problem....The impact and the implications of the Meneses/Blandon/Roiss Contra CIA crack cocaine connection cannot be understated. We all have an obligation to get to the very bottom of the origin, development, and implementation of this seedy enterprise."

While many were shocked at the news of apparent U.S. government drug-pushing, to me it was one more confirmation of a key aspect of the Franklin case. As I had discovered early on (as had Gary Caradori), the sexual abuse of children was only one part of the Franklin story. More
  • What is the "Monarch Project"?
  • George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography Perhaps it was because the name "Bush" was all over the Franklin scandal that Mr. Chaitkin showed up one day in my Lincoln law office. I told him, "Look, I know you have been in some tough spots before, but are you really sure you want to poke around in this? This question of 'mind control' -- the Monarch Project -- is the most scary and dangerous thing I have ever encountered."

How to meditate Zen (Master Dogen)

Ven. Eihei Dogen's Fukanzazengi (1227), Soto Zen Text Project, Stanford University (translation); Jeff Albrizze (PasaDharma.org), Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
Carrying firewood: First the ecstasy then the laundry...but someone forgot the ecstasy.
"Learn to take the backward step that turns the light and shines it inward." - Dogen
.
Universally Recommended Zazen Instructions
This pivotal Zen text, which was written in 1227 by Eihei Dogen, the Japanese monk who brought Zen from China to Japan, was one of the first pieces he wrote when he returned.

It opens with an introduction that answers the question that led him to go to China in the first place:

If we are originally endowed with the Buddha nature [the potential for enlightenment], why is it been necessary for us to seek enlightenment or even to engage in spiritual practice?
.
The Way is originally perfect and all-pervading. How could it be contingent on practice and realization? The true vehicle is self-sufficient. What need is there for special effort?

Indeed, the whole body is free from dust. Who could believe in a means to brush it clean? It is never apart from this very place; what is the use of traveling around to practice?

Stare until the heart-mind settles.
Yet, if there is a hairsbreadth deviation, it is like the gap between heaven and earth [lofty space and firm ground]. If the least like or dislike arises, the mind [heart] is lost in confusion.

Suppose you are confident in your understanding and rich in enlightenment, gaining the wisdom that knows at a glance, attaining the Way and clarifying the mind, arousing an aspiration to reach for the heavens.

You are playing in the entrance way, but you are still are short of the vital path of emancipation.

Start sitting with a group; it's easier.
Consider the Buddha: although he was wise at birth, the traces of his six years of upright sitting can yet be seen. As for Bodhidharma [who brought Buddhism to China from South India], although he had received the mind-seal, his nine years of facing a wall is celebrated still. If even the ancient sages were like this, how can we today dispense with wholehearted practice?

Therefore, put aside the intellectual practice of investigating words and chasing phrases, and learn to take the backward step that turns the light and shines it inward. Body and mind of themselves will drop away, and your original face will manifest. If you want to realize such, get to work on such right now.

Roshi Jeff Albrizze
For practicing Zen, a quiet room is suitable. Eat and drink moderately [not so much as to become dull and drowsy, not so little as to be restless and hungry]. Put aside all involvements and suspend all affairs.

Do not think "good" or "bad." Do not judge true or false. Give up the operations of mind, intellect, and consciousness; stop measuring with thoughts, ideas, and views. Have no designs on becoming a Buddha. How could that be limited to sitting or lying down?

At your sitting place, spread out a thick mat and  put a cushion on it. Sit... More

KOAN: One Finger Zen

Dhr. Seven, Roshi Jeff Albrizze (PasaDharma.org), CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly, The Book of Equanimity, Case 84 "Gutei's One Finger"; The Gateless Gate (Mumonkan)
Alt pop idol Avril Lavigne, following Zen Master Gutei's example but misunderstanding which digit he used, points out the path: middle finger, middle way.

PREFACE TO THE ASSEMBLY
Zen zero (Stanoin/etsy.com)
One hearing, a thousand awakenings;
One understanding, a thousand [results].
A superior person with one realization takes care of everything.
Mediocre and inferior persons, though they hear a great deal, mostly don't have faith.
Let's try to show the most accurate, simple point and see.

MAIN CASE
Attention!
Great Zen Master Gutei, whenever he was questioned, simply raised one finger.

APPRECIATORY VERSE
Eminem's Lose Yourself is Buddhist?
Old Gutei's fingertip Zen.
For thirty years, inexhaustible
Truly a person of the Way has limitless stratagems,
But common people can't see it in front of them.
What is gained is so utterly simple,
Yet expedients become endless in number.
Thousands of lands and seas swallowed up by a hair-tip.
Boundless dragons falling into whose hands?
Ninko's holding the fishing pole is appreciated.
I, too, raise one finger and say, "See?"

Tenryū-ji (天龍寺) is the head temple of the Tenryū branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism in Kyoto, Japan, founded by Ashikaga Takauji in 1339 to venerate the Buddha Gautama. More

Which finger?
Nyogen Senzaki and Paul Reps (trans.), Mumonkan, "Gutei's Finger"
Juzhi Yizhi (Gutei)
Gutei raised his finger whenever he was asked a question about Zen. A boy attendant began to imitate him in this way. When anyone asked the boy what his master had preached about, the boy would raise his finger.

Gutei heard about the boy's mischief. He seized him and cut off his finger. The boy cried and ran away. Gutei called out and stopped him. When the boy turned his head, Gutei raised up his own finger. In that instant the boy was "enlightened."

When Gutei was about to pass from this world, he gathered his monks around him. "I attained my finger-Zen," he said, "from my teacher Tenryū, and in my whole life I could not exhaust it." Then he passed away.

Mumon's comment: Enlightenment, which Gutei and the boy attained, has nothing to do with a finger. If anyone clings to a finger, Tenryū will be so disappointed that he will annihilate Gutei, the boy, and the clinger all together.
Gutei cheapens the teaching of Tenryū,
Emancipating the boy with a knife.
Compared to the Chinese god who pushed aside a mountain with one hand,
Old Gutei is a poor imitator.
It is due to this story that Gutei has commonly become known as Gutei Isshi, meaning "Gutei One-finger."

Remembering the GATE 2012 Experience

Seth Auberon, Gary Sanders, Wisdom Quarterly

Did Buddhism come up at GATE 2? You bet it did. Samsara, the endless cycle of birth and death, gave way to a genius writer's "Storywheel" chart shown below (Wisdom Quarterly).

Last year's appearance of Eckhart Tolle at GATE was an extravaganza of "transformational media" as the Occupy Movement was building and the Mayan world was ending.

Parking in Beverly Hills, sitting in the elegant Saban, rubbing elbows with the Hollywood elite, its movers, shakers, talent brokers, and dealmakers, we came to understand degree to which spirituality is on the mind of the entertainment industry.

Hearts shone brightly in the theater (WQ)
And what's on its mind will soon be on the public's mind then, due to hegemony, the world's. So what happens here matters everywhere. It is the way of empire. Los Angeles is a power center in more ways than one. And all of this was the creation of a Buddhist -- Jim Carrey.
We sat as ready as the rest of the world (WQ)
Fortunately, the iconic comedian is an openminded, inclusive Buddhist, like most American Dharma practitioners. After all, Buddhism is not a faith; it is a practice.

So what is GATE for, what does it do, and why? GATE ("Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment") answers all. Moreover, last year there was a live simulcast adding transparency as the whole world watched.

Meet Wisdom Quarterly at this year's event: GATE 3.
