Telephone Invention Day (comedy)
![]() |
| Now, if I could just figure out a way to get rid of this darn wire (actor portraying Bell in 1926) |
This day in history

| My cellphone has an app to make voice calls |
[Bell may not have invented all of the components of the phone or even be the one who came up with the idea, but he is the one who gets all the credit for being the first to get a patent for a two-way transmitter-receiver that now rules our lives due to corporations like Apple and its line of iPhones. Who invented the radio? An Italian man named Gugli' Marconi. got the patent, so we say it was him. Who invented flying? Not the Wright brothers, but they get the glory. How about natural selection and the theory of evolution? If anyone answers Charles Darwin, meet Alfred Russel Wallace.]
When was the first WIRELESS phone invented?
- It was invented in 1909 by American inventor William Dubilier (and, no, it was not a BlackBerry nor a walkie-talkie like in WW I).
- It was a new radio-powered device: #343 - Technical world magazine v.17 (1912) | HathiTrust Digital Library

In 1945, the U.S. 1st Army crossed the Rhine at Remagen, Germany after capturing the strategically important Ludendorff Bridge (also known as the Bridge at Remagen). World War II in Europe ended two months later.
In 1965, hundreds of civil rights marchers trying to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, USA, were turned back by state troopers and sheriff's deputies, who beat and injured dozens of people in what became known as "Bloody Sunday." Marchers voluntarily turned around on a ceremonial walk to the bridge two days later and, on March 21, with protection by federal and National Guard troops, the main Selma-to-Montgomery march began.
In 1984, the U.S. Senate confirmed William Wilson as the first U.S. ambassador to the Vatican [the independent country called the Holy See in the center of Rome, the capital of the current Holy Roman Empire known as the worldwide Catholic Church] in 117 years.
In 1985, "We Are the World," a song composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and recorded by a series of high-profile music stars was released worldwide with the goal of generating funds for the USA for Africa charity. The song and related promotions eventually raised about $63 million.
In 2010, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Academy Award for best director for her film The Hurt Locker.

Israel in Gaza: 'A textbook case of genocide"
Amy Goodman, DemocracyNow.org; Sheldon S., Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
- Independent media: democracynow.org
- Journalist and host Amy Goodman is Jewish but attempts to be objective rather than partisan
- Do all Jews agree with Israeli Zionism, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing? NO! There's a Jewish Voice for Peace, and Ultra-Orthodox Jews often oppose the re-creation of a state of Israel, saying it is against the religion and Bible and not in accord with God's plan (but most Jews ignore those Jews)

Old Testament is Forgery; Pope gets immunity
Wisdom Quarterly; Joseph McCabe (The Freethought Library); Infidels.org; Reuters.com

| Dangerous reading: Read all about the Bible and apocrypha before believing the translations |
In his classic essays, "The Forgery of the Old Testament" and "Lies of Religious Literature," ex-priest Joseph McCabe (1867-1955) exposes the inconsistencies that lie behind Christian texts. With clarity, forcefulness, and often biting humor, McCabe undoes two millennia of Christian tradition using the tools of science and reason. More
How We Detect The Forgery
THE Word of God a
forgery! I can understand the bewilderment of a religious reader, but
let one consider coolly what the statement means. It does not mean that
God forged a book. It means that men forged a book in God's name. That
can be examined dispassionately by anybody.
But, you say, they were religious men, and the charge is an insult.
My dear friend, Protestant divines and preachers unanimously accuse,
not merely religious men, but ministers of the Christian Gospel of
hundreds of forgeries.
You never heard of it? Why, they hold -- and quite rightly -- that almost all of the stories of saints and martyrs which are treasured in the Roman Church are forgeries; and there are Roman Catholic scholars who agree with them! They hold -- all the non-Roman historians in the world hold -- that the documents on which the power of Rome is essentially based are sheer forgeries. They hold that from the 6th to the 12th century Roman priests poured upon Europe a flood of forgeries, very much to their own profit.
The simple question here is whether ancient Jewish priests had done the same thing a thousand years before. But that is different, you say. These supposed forgeries are not lives of saints and decrees of councils, but the Word of God. Well then, what is a forgery? More

| What? I don't know nothing about no laws, courts, banks, child molesting, or Vatican politics. |
(Reuters) - Pope Benedict's decision to live in the Vatican [a private corporation within a city-state known as the "Holy See," which is not part of Rome or Italy but located on the grounds of an ancient Mithra temple complex repurposed for the "holy" Roman Empire's Christian Universalism a.k.a. catholicism] after he resigns [i.e., escapes prosecution] will provide him with security and privacy [in the face of the anticipated furor, while giving him the ability to save face by saying he quit because of his health and age, not his intention to evade prosecution as the CEO of the Vatican, Inc. engaged in a criminal conspiracy to shield homosexual pedophiles and corrupt Vatican bankers].
![]() |
| Now who's foolish, me or my church? |
"His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless [vulnerable to legal prosecution for his crimes]. He wouldn't have his immunity, his prerogatives, his security, if he is anywhere else," said one Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"It is absolutely necessary" that he stays in the Vatican, said the source, adding that Benedict should have a "dignified existence" in his remaining years [rather than one dragged through the courts like a common criminal].
Vatican sources said officials had three main considerations in deciding that Benedict should live in a convent [monastery?] in the Vatican after he resigns on February 28.
Vatican police, who already know the pope and his habits, will be able to guarantee his privacy and security and not have to entrust it to a foreign police force [which would have to extradite him to the Hague or some other world court to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity], which would be necessary if he moved to another country.
"I see a big problem if he would go anywhere else. [He better stayed holed up here in secret back rooms to wield power from behind the scenes as we get another younger man to take the fall while being temporarily elevated to CEO crying Mea culpa and being martyred to make way for The Last Pope, as explained by St. Malachy] I'm thinking in terms of his personal security, his safety. We don't have a secret service that can devote huge resources (like they do) to ex-presidents," the official said. More

DEAR MAYA: Ancient Nuns?
Dear Maya, Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal
Now that Dear Abby (Pauline Phillips, a.k.a. "Abigail Van Buren") and her sister Ann Landers have gone, WQ readers may ask ANYTHING.
Maya, the editors, and contributors will endeavor to answer. (Post your questions to the COMMENTS SECTION).
In response to a previous post titled Making Female history: from Sangha to Superpower leadership, The Awakening Forest Hermitage asks:
Q: "Would you share your reference for the bhikkhuni/bhiksuni disciples of prehistoric buddhas please?"
A: Yes. We have the advantage of having access to prehistoric information on buddhas and their chief disciples thanks to the Buddha himself (as well as information that comes from devas and prominent disciples with well developed psychic abilities) as recorded in one sacred scripture in particular:
In an amazing, albeit questionable, text called the "Story of the Lineage" translated more than a century ago by the British Pali Text Society's Prof. T.W. Rhys Davids in his Buddhist Birth-Stories: Jataka Tales.
In an amazing, albeit questionable, text called the "Story of the Lineage" translated more than a century ago by the British Pali Text Society's Prof. T.W. Rhys Davids in his Buddhist Birth-Stories: Jataka Tales.
It is not one of the rebirth tales, but rather a commentarial introduction entitled Nidanakatha ("The Story of the Lineage") originally translated from V. Fausböll's edition of the ancient Pali language text by T.W. Rhys Davids as it appears in the new and revised edition by Mrs. Rhys Davids (PTS, England, 1878).
This amazing book gives incontrovertible evidence that the Buddha's jatakas are the basis of Aesop's Fables, which were drawn from various cultures where Buddhism had permeated as it went west out of India and Afghanistan (Shakyan Janapada, Kapilavastu, Gandhara) to the ancient Near East, Central Asia, and Middle East.

Fun with Texting!!!
Steven Hodson (Inquistr.com, Australia)

"OMG, hi!!! this is so fun!!!" "0.k., now u send me 1."

"OMG, hi!!! this is so fun!!!" "0.k., now u send me 1."
As a society we seem to love nothing better than creating psychological disorders around every new fad that comes our way. And it seems that texting is no different.
The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia has a post up in which Jennie Carroll, a Melbourne technology researcher with RMIT University, claims to have "discovered" four separate disorders when it comes to texting and children.
Yes, children are once again in danger of themselves and this wicked and evil texting thing. Why? Well, they just don’t know any better.
Carroll says teenagers who text too much could find themselves suffering from:
- Textaphrenia: thinking we’ve heard or felt a new text message vibration when there is no message.
- Textiety: a feeling of anxiety from not receiving or sending any text messages.
- Post-Traumatic Text Disorder: injuries related to texting, such as walking into objects by not paying attention to surroundings.
- Binge Texting: sending massive numbers of texts to build self-esteem among peers. More

"Burma VJ" (film trailer)
While 100,000 people and thousands of Buddhist monks took to the streets to protest the countryʼs repressive regime, which has held them hostage for more than 40 years, foreign news crews were banned and the Internet was shut down.
Anders Østergaardʼs award-winning documentary shows a rare look into the Saffron Revolution, the 2007 uprising in Burma through the cameras of the DVB, an independent journalist group.
The Democratic Voice of Burma is a collective of 30 anonymous, underground video journalists (VJs). They record historic events on camcorders then smuggle the footage out of the country, where it is broadcast worldwide. Risking torture and life imprisonment, the VJs vividly document brutal clashes with the military and undercover police – even as they become targets of the authorities.
